An Investigation Of Women’S Motivational Factors To Run A Marathon, Michelle Roland Jan 1998

An Investigation Of Women’S Motivational Factors To Run A Marathon, Michelle Roland

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to begin to understand what motivates women to participate in marathons. Twenty-seven Caucasian women enrolled in the "Seminar in Fitness and Mental Health" at a Midwest university answered the questionnaire (Motivations of Marathoners Scale Questionnaire). After participants completed the questionnaire a focus group interview was conducted with six participants. The Motivations of Marathoners Questionnaire was used to identify the participants' motives to run a marathon. The questionnaire contained 56 items distributed across nine scales. The scales included the following areas: health orientation, weight concern, self-esteem, life meaning, psychological coping, affiliation, recognition, competition, and personal …

Keeping The Wto From Becoming The "World Trans-Science Organization": Scientific Uncertainty, Science Policy, And Factfinding In The Growth Hormones Dispute, Vern R. Walker Jan 1998

Keeping The Wto From Becoming The "World Trans-Science Organization": Scientific Uncertainty, Science Policy, And Factfinding In The Growth Hormones Dispute, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In Part I of the Article, I analyze the relevant provisions of the SPS Agreement. In that context, I examine the distinction between risk assessment and risk management, as well as the concepts of scientific uncertainty and science policy. Part II sets forth my proposal for how the WTO should review the sanitary measures established by members. The focus of attention is the fact-finding process in dispute settlement proceedings and, in particular, the substantive issues that should come before a panel, the evidence that a panel should consider, and the proper standard and burdens of proof. Finally, in Part III, …

Bioremediation Of Soil Contaminated With Explosives, Catherine A. Axtell Jan 1998

Bioremediation Of Soil Contaminated With Explosives, Catherine A. Axtell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Bioremediation of contaminated soil and water has been the topic of considerable research interest. White rot fungi have recently been proposed for use in biodegradation of explosives. The explosives, TNT, RDX and HMX are integral components of the manufacture of munitions. The wastes from the production of these and other explosives have been discharged into the surrounding environment resulting in contamination. Phanerochaete chrysosporium and strain F600, a proprietary white rot fungus developed by Mycotech Corporation, were studied with regard to their ability to degrade TNT, HMX and RDX in liquid cultures and in soil. Laboratory studies demonstrated that P. chrysosporium …

Freedom Of Speech: How Does The New York Constitution Compare To The United States Constitution, Eileen R. Kaufman, Leon Friedman Jan 1998

Freedom Of Speech: How Does The New York Constitution Compare To The United States Constitution, Eileen R. Kaufman, Leon Friedman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

One of the most interesting, and certainly most litigated, defamation questions in New York State is when constitutional protection should be afforded speech that arguably would be regarded as opinion. In resolving that question, the New York Court of Appeals has decided that the New York State Constitution affords greater protection for speech than does the federal constitution. While the New York standard seems to be far more generous in protecting speech than the federal standard, it may be that in the vast majority of cases, the outcomes would be the same under either state or federal analysis. The two …

Liberalism Stumbles In Tennessee, Donald J. Herzog Jan 1998

Liberalism Stumbles In Tennessee, Donald J. Herzog

Reviews

The Scopes trial will never be the same. I mean the trial immortalized in Inherit the Wind,' with its Southerners clutching in vain to their cozy scientific illiteracy and mechanically literal faith in the Bible, its idiotic intolerant Southerners destined to fall to the gale winds of modernity, liberalism, secularism, and skepticism embodied by a heroic ACLU and the inimitable Clarence Darrow. So what if Scopes got convicted? Surely the trial made a laughingstock of everything Tennessee stood for in banning the teaching of evolution from the public schools. And in a touch worthy of a gruesome morality play, William …

Anchors And Flotsam: Is Evidence Law 'Adrift'?, Richard D. Friedman

Reviews

Difference, as well as distance, yields perspective. A comparison of legal systems may search for common underlying principles, or for lessons that one system might learn from another. But it may also be aimed primarily at illuminating one system by light shed from another. This is the aim of Evidence Law Adrift, Mirjan Damagka's elegant study of the common law system of evidence, and he is ideally suited for the task. Born and schooled in Continental Europe, he has lived and taught in the United States for twenty-five years. His relation to the common law system of evidence is, I …

The Cross And The Begging Bowl: Deconstructing The Cosmology Of Violence, James L. Fredericks

Theological Studies Faculty Works

Rene Girard's work on the origins of violence as it relates to Christian symbolism is an ideal construct by which to compare the teachings of the Gautama Buddha and Jesus Christ. Both Jesus and Gautama eschew violence, but take different paths toward doing so.

Lutheranism, Anti-Judaism, And Bach's St. John Passion: With An Annotated Literal Translation Of The Libretto, J. S. Bach, Michael Marissen Jan 1998

Lutheranism, Anti-Judaism, And Bach's St. John Passion: With An Annotated Literal Translation Of The Libretto, J. S. Bach, Michael Marissen

Music Faculty Works

Bach's St. John Passion is surely one of the monuments of Western music, yet performances have become inevitably controversial. In large part, this is the result of the combination of powerful, highly emotional music coupled with a text that includes passages from a gospel marked by vehement anti-Judaic sentiments. What did this masterpiece mean in Bach's day, and what does it mean today? Although the bibliographies on Bach and on Judaism have grown enormously since World War II, there has been very little work on the relationships between these two areas. This is hardly surprising writers focusing on issues of …
