Highway 3: Faunal Remains From Byzantine, Byzantine–Early Islamic And Ottoman Contexts, Lee Perry-Gal
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
A faunal assemblage of 174 identified animal bones was recovered from excavations along Highway 3, mainly from Byzantine and Byzantine–Early Islamic and Ottoman contexts, with a small contribution from Late Roman strata. The remains originate primarily from refuse pits and from industrial-agricultural installations, including reservoirs, ovens and silos. The assemblage was analyzed using a diagnostic zone recording system, standard osteological identification, age-at-death assessment and detailed taphonomic analysis. The Byzantine and Byzantine–Early Islamic assemblages are dominated by caprines, mainly sheep, followed by pigs, equids and cattle, with minor representation of chicken and camel. Caprine mortality profiles indicate mainly mature individuals, suggesting …

In precision apiculture, the portable digital camera is a cost-effective sensor for capturing hive images or videos used to quantify different colony variables. Openly accessible, well-annotated, interoperable cell-level image datasets are still the exception rather than the norm. This shortage constitutes a major barrier to AI-driven approaches aimed at automating image-based comb analysis. In this article, we present FAIRHiveFrames-1K, a publicly available dataset of 1265 annotated hive frame images (1920 × 1080 PNG) designed to facilitate research in AI-intensive image-based comb analysis automation. The dataset, derived from a 2013–2022 U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service multi-sensor research reservoir, includes 124,669 …
Cannibal Ghouls Of Japan: The Representation Of Cannibalism In Contemporary Japanese Manga, Nico Indovina
Cannibal Ghouls Of Japan: The Representation Of Cannibalism In Contemporary Japanese Manga, Nico Indovina
Research and Creativity Symposium
A noticeable uptick in depictions of cannibalism has appearing in the last few years in Japanese manga. It has appeared across several genres of the medium and has given rise to questions over its inclusion. Previous research connected the inclusion to the Japanese oni, a creature originating in Buddhist art, as early as the 8th century in Japan. This article argues that the connection goes beyond simply the oni and also derives inspiration from real cannibals of the 20th century in Japan and theory on monsters. The visual similarities between the historical representations and those of contemporary Japanese manga …

Highway 3: Architectural Remains From The Late Hellenistic, Late Roman–Early Islamic And Late Ottoman Periods, Davida Eisenberg-Degen
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
Excavations along Highway 3 revealed intermittent occupation, with remains from the late Hellenistic, Late Roman, Byzantine–Early Islamic and Ottoman periods, as well as earlier unstratified pottery from Iron Age II. The late Hellenistic period is represented by a winepress, likely associated with a rural farmstead. A winepress and a hypocaust, dated to the Late Roman–early Byzantine periods, may reflect the expansion of the settlement exposed in previous excavations to the east of the present excavation. Byzantine–Early Islamic remains include pottery-production facilities comprising potter’s wheels, levigation pools and slags. The latest remains date to the eighteenth–nineteenth centuries (late Ottoman period), reflecting …

Dnp Final Report: Can Implementing A Mindfulness-Based Program Help Reduce Stress In Nursing Students?, Shelby Devreeze Msn, Rn, Cpn, Cne-Cl
DNP Final Reports
Stress among nursing students is a well-documented problem that contributes to physical, mental, and emotional issues, substance abuse, and program dropout. A mindfulness-based stress reduction program was implemented with nursing students to evaluate its impact on perceived stress levels over a five-week period. A review of evidence-based articles provides strong evidence that this intervention correlates with reduced reported stress. An MBSRP was implemented with nursing students who completed a Perceived Stress Scale 10 (PSS-10) before the intervention and again after five weeks.
Results from this project showed a statistically significant reduction (t=2.725, p=0.025) in stress among the nursing student population …

Role Of Occupational Therapy In Hippotherapy And Therapeutic Riding: A Mental Health Perspective, Ava Morrison
Capstone Projects
The purpose of my doctoral capstone experience (DCE) was to gain knowledge about the unique role that occupational therapy (OT) plays in equine-assisted therapy at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center, with an emphasis on Therapeutic Riding. Equine-assisted therapy, including hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, is an emerging area of occupational therapy practice that promotes physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being through structured interactions with horses. Despite growing evidence supporting the therapeutic benefits of equine-assisted interventions, confusion remains regarding the distinctions between hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, highlighting the need for increased education and advocacy within the field. In addition, there is a …

Maternal Inflammation Alters Nuclear And Mitochondrial Dna Methylation Patterns In Neonatal Brain Monocytes, Andrew Ebenezer, Jonathan Hicks, Brooke Hollander, Alexander Hone, Mona Batish, Robert Akins, Adam Marsh, Elizabeth Wright-Jin
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a common birth complication that can cause death or lifelong disabling conditions like cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism. It is well established that maternal infection and inflammation are significant risk factors for HIE but reasons for this increase in neurological risk to the offspring remain unknown. Inflammation or infection are associated with epigenetic changes and may contribute to the increased risk of neurodevelopmental disability in exposed offspring. Here, we analyzed and compared DNA methylation patterns in brain monocytes isolated from control, maternal immune activation (MIA), and an inflammation sensitized HIE (IS-HIE) CF-1 mouse model …

A Narrative History Of The Great Burn Proposed Wilderness, Cameron M. Kirwan
A Narrative History Of The Great Burn Proposed Wilderness, Cameron M. Kirwan
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
I spent autumn of 2025 interning with the Great Burn Conservation Alliance as a Heart Lake Ambassador, keeping a field journal to document the land as I saw it. The Great Burn Proposed Wilderness lies straddled across the border of northwestern Montana and northern Idaho, a swath of roadless area at the center of the Great Fire of 1910. Today, the landscape is a thriving ecosystem spanning across the rocky slopes of the northern Bitterroots.
Over the course of the late summer and early fall, I fell in love with the area and I wanted to immerse myself in all …
Perceptions And Meta Perceptions Of Bison In The West, Riley Comstock
Perceptions And Meta Perceptions Of Bison In The West, Riley Comstock
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Effective coexistence between wildlife populations and the people that live with them requires an understanding of how people feel toward the species and their management. Bison occupy a unique place in conservation history and management. Once extirpated across nearly all of their range and only recently introduced to areas outside of large tracts of federal land, they are now a jurisdictionally challenged species, with varying management paradigms across a patchwork of landowners and managers. Recent research has shown how activating different social identities can distort people’s attitudes toward species. Here, I explore whether activating urban and rural identities distorts people’s …
The Gamification Of Investing: Young Investors And The Dopamine Desktop, Calvin Caplis
The Gamification Of Investing: Young Investors And The Dopamine Desktop, Calvin Caplis
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
ABSTRACT
While traditional methods of investing remain, such as utilizing established financial advisory services and trading applications, neo-brokerages have gamified their trading platforms. These platforms have become increasingly popular among younger generations. The “gamification of investing” is a phenomenon that involves the integration of game-like features (e.g., haptic feedback, neon colors, confetti) into brokerage applications. This “gamification” has lowered the barriers to entry for investing in capital markets for younger generations but has simultaneously coaxed them into being more risk-tolerant and potentially unaware of the consequences of high-risk investing strategies. This is partly because neo-brokers make it easy to gain …
How Do Individual And Environmental Covariates Impact The Immune Response Of Deer Mice In Western Montana, Rachel A. Throckmorton
How Do Individual And Environmental Covariates Impact The Immune Response Of Deer Mice In Western Montana, Rachel A. Throckmorton
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Sin Nombre Virus (SNV) is an exceptional model system for studying wildlife disease because of how simple it is to capture, take samples, and obtain disease status from the primary host. Immune response is an important factor to consider when testing for SNV because it can affect susceptibility of the host as well as transmission of the virus. We examined individual and environmental conditions that may influence immune response and therefore possibly SNV transmission in wild populations. We investigated whether SNV infection status, reproductive status, sex, and season influenced immune response through examining total white blood cell (WBC) counts and …
Mindful Machines: Do Children Trust Ai More When They Think It Has A Mind?, Juhi Singh
Mindful Machines: Do Children Trust Ai More When They Think It Has A Mind?, Juhi Singh
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Children are increasingly interacting with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to seek information. Yet little is known about how children discern whether to trust AI responses. This study investigates two related questions. First, children prefer to learn from confident over hesitant people, but do they similarly prefer to learn from confident AI? Second, individual differences in children’s attributions of human-like mental states to non-human entities (anthropomorphism) predicts their social conceptions of AI-embedded technologies. Accordingly, are individual differences in anthropomorphism related to their learning from AI?
Child participants (N=64; ages 5-8) viewed videos of AI and human informants answering questions. Across …
Use Of Sunlight Differs Between Sympatric Garter Snakes In Montane Riparian Forests, Ethan T. Chatwood, David R. Tevs
Use Of Sunlight Differs Between Sympatric Garter Snakes In Montane Riparian Forests, Ethan T. Chatwood, David R. Tevs
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Microhabitat selection by small ectotherms often involves trade-offs between accommodating the thermoregulatory needs of the organism and minimizing predation. Sunny microhabitats are often used as basking sites by small ectotherms. However, sunlight may also increase chromatic contrast between the animal and its substrate, thereby increasing visibility to potential predators. To counter this increased exposure, small ectotherms may develop means to remain hidden in sunny areas or achieving suitable body temperatures while in shaded areas. We collected data on substrate temperature, light conditions, observation time, and behavior (active vs stationary) between two sympatric garter snake species with contrasting dorsal colorations (Thamnophis …

A Night In The Life Of A Female Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle, Wyatt J. Benson Mr.
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
A Night in the Life of a Female Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle
During the height of the mating season, Japanese rhinoceros beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus) males aggregate on trees to fight against rivals over access to females. Males in this species are very well studied for their charismatic, large horns that constitute up to 30% of their body weight. However, winning fights is not enough to guarantee matings. Males must still perform complex courtship songs on the backs of females, and surprisingly, females ultimately choose only one male to mate with. Females may evaluate male quality via these songs, which serve as …
A Persistent Penance: Repetition, Memory, And Moral Stasis In Ethan Frome, Nicholas Howard
A Persistent Penance: Repetition, Memory, And Moral Stasis In Ethan Frome, Nicholas Howard
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
My project examines Edith Wharton’s novella Ethan Frome through the lens of purgatory. I argue that the story is less a tragedy of failed love than a story about being trapped inside one’s own mistakes, unable to move forward. Rather than reading Ethan’s sled crash as a failed suicide followed by a bleak but ordinary life, I explore the interpretation that the “present-day” Starkfield is a form of purgatory—an endless winter in which Ethan continues the emotional patterns that destroyed him.
My guiding question is: What changes if we read Ethan Frome as already dead, living inside a self-made purgatory? …

Herbal Medicine Interference With Continuous Glucose Monitoring System In Diabetes Management: A Case Report, Julia Lees, Haley Johnson, Atefeh Bagherpanah, Timbreia Brown, Deniz Karaca, Tamaya Merrell
Research Day
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems have transformed diabetes management through improved glycemic control, leading to decreased adverse events such as cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy. However, there are documented, known interactions with several commonly used substances that are available over the counter, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, and Vitamin C, that affect the accuracy of CGM glucose readings. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released an alert November 2025 regarding incorrect low glucose readings associated with the Freestyle Libre CGM system after the manufacturer received 736 severe adverse events and seven deaths related to this issue. The FDA warns that …

The Cat, The Shoe, And The Bayonet: Kinship With Magically Concealed Items In A 19th Century Missoula Home, Logan E. Nickel
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
In 2016, UM faculty and students excavated a mummified cat, a girl's shoe, and a Civil War bayonet concealed within the structure of a late 19th century house. My research led me to discover that the intentional enclosure of certain objects considered to be magically protective into the walls or foundations of family dwellings is a longstanding practice found across the world, including in the northern European context from which the homeowners descended. Tracing the historical and archaeological record of so-called concealment or foundation rituals, I examined the continuities and changes in such practices from ancient northern European religions through …

From Zebra Bite To The Operating Room: Discussion Of The Management Of Equine Bite Wounds, Kavya Suryadevara, Harshita Yepuri, Saad Rahman, Milo Paman, Gehrig Ornelas, L. Michael Waters Jr
Research Day
Animal bites, particularly those from cats and dogs, are well characterized in emergency and surgical care. Equine animal bites, however, are rare and may be underestimated in severity. The genus Equus includes animals such as horses, donkeys, and zebras, with members sharing similar dental and digestive anatomy as well as comparable musculoskeletal traits. These animals generate significant crushing forces, often causing deep soft-tissue injury, devitalization, and extensive contamination with complex oral flora. For surgeons, such wounds present challenges in assessment, irrigation, debridement, and closure, as well as antimicrobial selection to prevent infection. Despite potential severity, equine bite cases are infrequently …

Zoonotic Streptococcus Equi Subspecies Epidemicus Bacteremia With Prosthetic Joint Injection And Dvt In An Elderly Patient: A Case Report And Literature Review, Bhavik Singh, Zoë M. Rushetsky, Zoheb I. Sulaiman, Eileen M. Raynor
Research Day
Introduction
Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus (SEZ) is a beta-hemolytic group C streptococcus commonly found in the upper respiratory tract of horses and other animals. Although SEZ is a frequent cause of equine “strangles,” human infection is exceptionally rare and associated with direct animal contact or consumption of unpasteurized animal products. Human SEZ infections have been reported to present with bacteremia, septic arthritis, endocarditis, or meningitis—particularly in immunocompromised individuals—but involvement of prosthetic joints is scarcely described in the literature. This case highlights an unusual zoonotic presentation of SEZ bacteremia in an elderly male with frequent equine exposure that was complicated by …

INTRODUCTION Traumatic brain injury resulting from blast pressure waves is a significant concern, particularly among military personnel. This study aims to evaluate a blast pressure wave apparatus designed to simulate human-like traumatic brain injury in rodents, assessing both physiological and behavioral outcomes.
METHODS Rodents (Long Evans rats and CB57B/SMN2 mice) were exposed to a single 20 psi blast pressure wave using the newly developed apparatus. Pre- and post-exposure assessments included several behavioral tests: tinnitus, depression, and motor function. Control groups were exposed solely to an equivalent blast sound, but not the pressure wave of the device. Data was analyzed to …
