"The Past Never Vanishes": A Contextual Critique Of The Existing Indian Family Doctrine, Lorie M. Graham

American Indian Law Review

I don't know my own culture, . . . I am going to need your help in understanding . . . . Teach me, teach my children. These are the words of a forty-three-year-old Navajo woman on her first visit back to the Navajo Nation since her birth. Stolen as an infant, along with her twin brother, and adopted out on the black market, she was finally reunited with her family and community. Her journey home comes at a time when Native American nations are fighting proposed legislation and court-made rules that seek to limit the reach of the Indian …

Indian Fishing Rights: Aftermath Of The Fox Decision And The Year 2000, Karen Ferguson Jan 1998

Indian Fishing Rights: Aftermath Of The Fox Decision And The Year 2000, Karen Ferguson

American Indian Law Review

The ongoing Indian fishing rights debate in northern Michigan is intensifying as a 1985 court ordered consent agreement nears its year 2000 expiration date. Many of the local citizenry are concerned that the debate may turn violent as it did in the 1970s. In the 1970s there was fierce competition between Indians and non-Indians over a fish resource that was becoming depleted at an alarming rate. While pollution of the Great Lakes and the presence of non-native parasites were more likely the cause of the depleted stocks, the sport fishermen blamed Indian gill netting for the problem. In recent years, …

Hinduism In The Indian Diaspora In Trinidad, Marion O'Callaghan Jan 1998

Hinduism In The Indian Diaspora In Trinidad, Marion O'Callaghan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The importation of Indian indentured labour into Trinidad covers the period of 1845 to 1917.

Trinidad had, in the century before Indian indentured labour, changed from a peasant society to a plantation economy based on sugar, from a country of few settlers or slaves to a society with settlers drawn principally from French settlers and a slave population drawn directly from Africa or from other Caribbean islands. It had changed colonial hands from Spain to Britain.

Genetic Variation In The Carolina Marsh Clam, Polymesoda Caroliniana, W.D. Grater, C.T. Hackney, D.J. Covington Jan 1998

Genetic Variation In The Carolina Marsh Clam, Polymesoda Caroliniana, W.D. Grater, C.T. Hackney, D.J. Covington

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis was used to detect genetic variation at eight enzyme loci and five general protein loci in 11 populations of Polymesoda caroliniana from the Gulf of Mexico and south Atlantic coast of the U.S. Little variability was found between four of these populations along a salinity gradient in the Cape Fear Estuary, NC, and a regional trend was not observed in other populations along a latitudinal gradient. Heterogeneity analyses and dendrograms, both based on allele frequencies, suggest populations from the Gulf coast of Florida are genetically different from both a northern Gulf population (Mississippi) and Atlantic populations. …

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods Jan 1998

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes three American housekeeping books—Lydia Maria Child's The American Frugal Housewife, Catherine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe's The American Woman's Home, and Helen Campbell Stuart's The Easiest Way in Housekeeping and Cooking—as historical examples of technical writing. The study follows current recommendations for historical research in the field, namely, to analyze technical writing texts in consideration of their historical context. This involves determining what constituted technical writing in the nineteenth century; considering the publishing context of the study; and applying this definition to analyze three housekeeping books as technical manuals. These texts exemplify technical writing …
