Suggested Considerations For Creating A Coporate Style Manual, Melissa Gentile
Suggested Considerations For Creating A Coporate Style Manual, Melissa Gentile

Visual communication is the key to maintaining any kind of corporate style. Companies rely on a variety of visual aids to communicate their image to the public. The desired image that each company has of themselves can be communicated to the public through a corporate signature, a logotype, symbols, typefaces and corporate col ors. All of these visual communicators help the public to identify the company, its sub sidiaries, its activities and its involvement with the public. Companies often have so many visual aids that they have to be outlined in a corporate style manual. A corporate style manual takes …

Constraints To Adoption Of Appropriate Breast Feeding Practices In A Squatter Settlement In Karachi, Pakistan, S H. Badruddin, S N. Inam, S Ramzanali, K Hendricks
Section of Internal Medicine
Appropriate breast feeding practices (ABFP) are important for successful lactation. Constraints to adoption of ABFP by mothers in a squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan are reported. One hundred and two mother-infant pairs were followed from birth to 16 weeks of age. Eighty-seven infants received prelacteal feeds of honey as a quasi-religious ritual, 16 received ghutti for "cleansing of stomach", other prelacteal feeds were given as substitutes for breast feeding. Twenty nine mothers initiated breast feeding within 4 hours of birth. Supplemental water was given to 53 infants; major reasons being mothers' perception of thirst and diarrhoea in the infant. Supplemental …
Prenatal Cocaine Exposure And Mother–Infant Interaction: Implications For Occupational Therapy Intervention, Heather Miller-Kuhaneck
Prenatal Cocaine Exposure And Mother–Infant Interaction: Implications For Occupational Therapy Intervention, Heather Miller-Kuhaneck
Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications
The literature from multiple disciplines on in utero cocaine exposure and mother–infant interaction and attachment was examined for possible relationships and implications for occupational therapists. Maternal cocaine use and neurobehavioral deficits in neonates prenatally exposed to cocaine may result in interactional difficulties between mother and infant. Knowledge of child development, sensory regulation, and infant cues will enable therapists to assist the mother in creating positive interactive experiences between herself and her child.

Leader Of The Pack: A Proposal For Disclosure Of Board Leadership Structure, Constance E. Bagley, Richard H. Koppes
Leader Of The Pack: A Proposal For Disclosure Of Board Leadership Structure, Constance E. Bagley, Richard H. Koppes
San Diego Law Review
To reform corporate governance, this article proposes that the New York Stock Exchange and the National Association of Securities Dealers amend their listing policies to require a listed company to disclose in its proxy statement (1) whether or not there is a separate independent chair of its board of directors, and if there is not, (2) whether or not its board of directors has designated a senior independent director who functions as a leader of its independent directors. The proposals are designed to encourage directors to select an independent chair or a lead director, thereby increasing the likelihood that a …
On Section 411 Of The Copyright Code And Determing The Proper Scope Of A Copyright Registration, Douglas Y'Barbo
On Section 411 Of The Copyright Code And Determing The Proper Scope Of A Copyright Registration, Douglas Y'Barbo
San Diego Law Review
Section 411(a) of the Copyright Code requires that a copyright plaintiff proffer a valid certificate of registration of copyright as a condition of bringing a suit for copyright infringement. This Article concerns the scope of copyright, including such issues as the means by which a court should determine that the work alleged to be infringed is subsumed within the scope of the certificate of registration proffered by the copyright plaintiff. The author argues that courts should use Section 411 to compel proper registration.

Residual Strength Of Equine Bone Is Not Reduced By Intense Fatigue Loading: Implications For Stress Fracture, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover, J. C. Gibeling, L. V. Griffin
Biomedical Engineering
Fatigue or stress fractures are an important clinical problem in humans as well as racehorses. An important question in this context is, when a bone experiences. fa!igue damage ~uring e~treme use, how much is it weakened compared to its original state? Since there are very ltmtted data on thts quesuon and stress fractures are common in racehorses, we sought to determine the effect of fatigue loading on the monotonic l:trength of equine cortical bone. Beams were machined from the dorsal, medial and lateral cortices of the third metacarpal bones of six thoroughbred racehorses. Beams from left and right bones were …

When stories about the prosecutions of women for using drugs during pregnancy first appeared in newspapers in 1989, I immediately suspected that most of the defendants were Black women. Charging someone with a crime for giving birth to a baby seemed to fit into the legacy of devaluing Black mothers. I was so sure of this intuition that I embarked on my first major law review article based on the premise that the prosecutions perpetuated Black women's subordination. My hunch turned out to be right: a memorandum prepared by the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project documented cases brought against pregnant women …

Beyond "Sellouts" And "Race Cards": Black Attorneys And The Straitjacket Of Legal Practice, Margaret M. Russell
Michigan Law Review
For attorneys of color, the concept of "representing race" within the context of everyday legal practice is neither new nor voluntarily learned; at a basic level, it is what we do whenever we enter a courtroom or conference room in the predominantly white legal system of this country.
Straightjacketing Professionalism: A Comment On Russell, David B. Wilkins
Straightjacketing Professionalism: A Comment On Russell, David B. Wilkins
Michigan Law Review
Professor Russell's essay sounds a much needed cautionary note about the public's characterization of Christopher Darden and Johnnie Cochran both during and after the spectacle of O.J. Simpson's criminal trial. Russell cogently argues that Darden and Cochran's choices, as well as those of other black lawyers confronting similar problems, must be evaluated against the backdrop of racism that devalues and constrains the lives of African Americans in general and African-American lawyers in particular. Black lawyers, Russell insists, not only face "glass ceilings" inhibiting their advancement, but must also live inside "glass bubble[s] ... that severely circumscribe[ ] the flexibility and …

My first introduction to Denise Gray was through a form. The intake sheet was dated October 17, 1994. The legal problem was straightforward. My introduction to Denise Gray would come much later. I am a clinical law professor. The clinic, Boston College Legal Assistance Bureau, is known as "LAB." I teach students law by supervising them as they represent, usually for the first time, a real person with real problems.
Representing Race Outside Of Explicitly Racialized Contexts, Naomi R. Cahn
Representing Race Outside Of Explicitly Racialized Contexts, Naomi R. Cahn
Michigan Law Review
Welfare "as we know it" ended in 1996, a victim of a conservatism that views welfare recipients as lazy and immoral. One aspect of welfare that is, however, unlikely to experience radical change is child support. More vigorous child support enforcement has become an increasingly important component of federal welfare reform bills over the past two decades because of the twin hopes of fiscal and parental responsibility: first, that child support will reimburse welfare costs, and second, that fathers will take more responsibility for their children. Child support programs within the welfare system perpetuate a negative perception of poor people. …

So much depends upon a rope in Mobile, Alabama. To hang Michael Donald, Henry Hays and James "Tiger" Knowles tied up "a piece of nylon rope about twenty feet long, yellow nylon." They borrowed the rope from Frank Cox, Hays's brother-in-law. Cox "went out in the back" of his mother's "boatshed, or something like that, maybe it was in the lodge." He "got a rope," climbed into the front seat of Hays's Buick Wildcat, and handed it to Knowles sitting in the back seat. So much depends upon a noose. Knowles "made a hangman's noose out of the rope," thirteen …

Using State Inspection Statutes For Discovery In Federal Securities Fraud Actions, Randall Thomas, Kenneth J. Martin
Using State Inspection Statutes For Discovery In Federal Securities Fraud Actions, Randall Thomas, Kenneth J. Martin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
We propose that plaintiffs in securities fraud actions should use state inspections statutes to obtain discovery about potential securities fraud cases. First, we argue that the Private Securities Law Reform Act has substantially increased shareholders' difficulty in uncovering securities fraud. Next, we show that shareholders have an alternative method of investigating fraud: state inspections statutes. We then analyze cases filed under the Delaware inspection statute to examine the costs to plaintiffs of pursuing claims under this statute. We find that the statutory inspection process is a largely successful, although expensive and time-consuming, process. Nevertheless, potential plaintiffs could realize substantial benefits …

At the end of the twentieth century, the legal status of Chinese Americans in San Francisco's public schools turns on a requested judicial finding that a desegregation order originally designed to dismantle a system subordinating nonwhites now invidiously discriminates against Chinese Americans. Brian Ho, Patrick Wong, and Hilary Chen, plaintiffs in Ho v. San Francisco Unified School District, represent "all [16,000] children of Chinese descent" eligible to attend San Francisco's public schools. Their high-profile suit, filed by small-firm attorneys, challenges the validity of a 1983 judicial consent decree desegregating San Francisco's schools. Approved in response to an NAACP class action …

Epr Studies On The Mono- And Dicobalt(Ii)-Substituted Forms Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica. Insight Into The Catalytic Mechanism Of Dinuclear Hydrolases, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
The structure and function of the prototypical dinuclear hydrolase, namely, the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP), was probed by EPR spectroscopy of the mono- and dicobalt(II)-substituted derivatives. A new systematic protocol for the interpretation of Co(II) EPR spectra is described and the S = 3/2 spin states of the Co(II)-substituted forms of the enzyme have been characterized. This protocol allows the simulation of line shape using theoretically allowed geff values corresponding to an isotropic greal value. In addition, the gross distortion of EPR spectra of high-spin S = 3/2 Co(II) ions has been investigated, …
