When Portfolios Become Part Of The Grading Process: A Case Study In A Junior High Setting, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson, Carmen Dykema, Randy Lloyd

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Formal assessments have long served as our society's most privileged indices of student learning and school accountability. Hence, both learning and school effectiveness have often been equated with standardized test scores and/or grades. The privilege accorded to external assessment has tended to minimize the role of teachers and, even more dramatically, students in the assessment process. Assessments are external tools that are administered to teachers and students. For teachers, this often leads to a tension between their curricular goals and the assessment measures they must use in the classroom (Mitchell, 1992; Pearson, DeStefano, & Garcia, in press). Students are rarely …

C-Terminal Truncations Of The Yeast Nucleoporin Nup145p Produce A Rapid Temperature-Conditional Mrna Export Defect And Alterations To Nuclear Structure., Thomas C. Dockendorff, Catherine V. Heath, Alan L. Goldstein, Christine A. Snay, C N. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

A screen for temperature-sensitive mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae defective in nucleocytoplasmic trafficking of poly(A)+ RNA has identified an allele of the NUP145 gene, which encodes an essential nucleoporin. NUP145 was previously identified by using a genetic synthetic lethal screen (E. Fabre, W. C. Boelens, C. Wimmer, I. W. Mattaj, and E. C. Hurt, Cell 78:275-289, 1994) and by using a monoclonal antibody which recognizes the GLFG family of vertebrate and yeast nucleoporins (S. R. Wente and G. Blobel, J. Cell Biol. 125:955-969, 1994). Cells carrying the new allele, nup145-10, grew at 23 and 30 degrees C but were unable to …

Optical And Magneto-Optical Constants Of Mnpt3, K. W. Wierman, J. N. Hilfiker, R. F. Sabiryanov, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Roger D. Kirby, John A. Woollam

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Optically thick films of MnPt3 were deposited on quartz using dc magnetron sputtering. The films were covered with an SiOx protective overcoat and annealed in vacuum at 850 °C for 1 h to form the crystalline L12 (Cu3Au) cubic structure. These films have a high degree of long-range order and are highly textured with the (111) axis along the film normal. Variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements were taken over the spectral range of 1.2–4.2 eV to determine the optical constants of both MnPt3 and the SiOx overcoat. Spectroscopic magneto-optic Kerr rotation and …

Study Of The Wear Of Dental Composites Using An Atomic Force Microscope, Dale E. Ewbank Feb 1997

Study Of The Wear Of Dental Composites Using An Atomic Force Microscope, Dale E. Ewbank

Theses

This work presents a study of the wear of four dental composites (Concept, XRV, Maxxim, and Belleglass) which are in commercial use. The wear testing was performed using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). Several scanning techniques and various cantilevers were attempted. Finally use of a stainless steel cantilever with a tungsten bead attached resulted in quantifiable wear. AFM imaging in contact mode was used for evaluation of the wear tests. Wear rates are reported as volume per 100,000 scans. The AFM measured wear rates rank the tested composites from most to least wear as follows: Concept highest volume of wear …

The Use Of Axially Loaded Flexures For Vibration Isolation In The Omega Laser Facility Target Positioner, Lance Lund Feb 1997

The Use Of Axially Loaded Flexures For Vibration Isolation In The Omega Laser Facility Target Positioner, Lance Lund

Theses

The OMEGA Laser Facility is used for laser driven inertial confinement fusion research at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics. This facility requires 1 millimeter diameter spherical targets placed at the center of an experimental chamber to remain stable to within 5 microns (0.0002"). Occasionally a mounted target will exceed this stability specification due to ambient vibration, so an isolation stage is proposed as a means of eliminating this problem. This isolation stage consists of six parallel flexures that are axially loaded to reduce the resonant frequency of the isolator. Frequency versus axial load, damping, and linearity are …

A Morphological Array Image Processor Controller Chip Set, Christopher Insalaco Feb 1997

A Morphological Array Image Processor Controller Chip Set, Christopher Insalaco

Theses

The design, simulation and layout of a controller chip set for a morphological array image processor shall be discussed. These VLSI chips in conjunction with the Morphological Array Processor (MAP) and Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) chip sets perform the morphological image processing operations of erosion and dilation on 512x512 pixel, 8-bit gray scale images using a 7x7 windowing matrix in real time (60 frames per second). The controller chip set design allows for pipelining of successive MAP's as well as operation on 1024x1024 pixel, 8-bit gray scale images. To facilitate the design, additional scaleable CMOS standard library cells and corresponding …

Reaching A New Audience, John Cobourn, Sue Donaldson Feb 1997

Reaching A New Audience, John Cobourn, Sue Donaldson

Journal of Extension

The challenges of reaching a new audience can be met by creating a flexible program with a many-pronged approach, including a variety of teaching techniques. The Small Ranch Water Quality Program, to teach suburban residents how to manage their property to decrease non-point source pollution, is presented as an example of a successful attempt to reach a diverse audience. Key elements include identification of the idiosyncrasies, needs and desires of the new audience, development of curriculum to meet those specific needs, using the audience to help develop the program, and providing many different types of learning opportunities.

Forestry Demonstrations: What Good Is A Walk In The Woods?, Alison H. Harmon, Stephen B. Jones Feb 1997

Forestry Demonstrations: What Good Is A Walk In The Woods?, Alison H. Harmon, Stephen B. Jones

Journal of Extension

Although outdoor demonstrations are a traditional Extension methodology, few studies have documented the educational efficacy of forestry tours. An assessment of the educational effectiveness of Forest Stewardship demonstration in Pennsylvania found that demonstrations enhance learning and induce attitude shifts. Participants tested before the workshop, after an indoor session, and following the field tour scored differently on questions revealing their knowledge of forests and forestry, as well as their attitudes about timber harvesting and clearcutting. Acceptance of clearcutting as a viable forestry tool occurred only after participants toured the demonstration are, including its two-acre clearcut. Demonstrations provide an excellent forum for …

Educating With Controversial Issues, Stephen D. Schumacher, Mike Lloyd Feb 1997

Educating With Controversial Issues, Stephen D. Schumacher, Mike Lloyd

Journal of Extension

Extension's efforts to cooperate with communities facing environmental decisions resulted in a public meeting about the issue of land application of sewage sludge. Strengths in leadership, organizational skills, and presentation of technical information in a user-friendly manner allowed Extension to be recognized by all involved as a source of non-biased, research based, factual information. A key to success of this type of program is the format of the meeting. The authors address important issues to consider when designing public meetings to assure that all viewpoints will be heard and that individual biases are minimized.

Teaching Electromagnetic Field Theory Using Differential Forms, Karl F. Warnick, Richard H. Selfridge, David V. Arnold Feb 1997

Teaching Electromagnetic Field Theory Using Differential Forms, Karl F. Warnick, Richard H. Selfridge, David V. Arnold

Faculty Publications

The calculus of differential forms has significant advantages over traditional methods as a tool for teaching electromagnetic (EM) field theory. First, films clarify the relationship between field intensity and flux density, by providing distinct mathematical and graphical representations for the two types of fields. Second, Ampere's and Faraday's laws obtain graphical representations that are as intuitive as the representation of Gauss's law. Third, the vector Stokes theorem and the divergence theorem become special cases of a single relationship that is easier for the student to remember, apply, and visualize than their vector formulations. Fourth, computational simplifications result from the use …

Evaluation Of Environmental Characteristics Of Wtp Residuals For Disposal In Monofills, Ping Tian Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Environmental Characteristics Of Wtp Residuals For Disposal In Monofills, Ping Tian

Dissertations

Disposal of water treatment plant (WTP) have raised great concerns due to the stringent water quality standards and environmental regulations, and limited availability of land for ultimate disposal. The ultimate disposal of water treatment plant residuals by using monofill may be one of the most economical, and feasible options. Design and operation of such a monofill will be simple because of the uniformity of the characteristics of WTP residuals.

The objectives of this project were to determine the environmental characteristics of WTP residuals and to apply these characteristics for the design of monofills and development of the metal leaching model …

Smith On Bacon-Smith, 'Enterprising Women: Televisionfandom And The Creation Of Popular Myth, Anne Collins Smith

Faculty Publications

In Enterprising Women scholar Camille Bacon-Smith describes the underground culture of "media fandom," that is, the network of fans who create fiction, poetry, art, and other creative works based on favorite television shows and then gather to circulate these works. Because I have been an active participant in this culture for twenty years, Bacon-Smith's book was of particular interest to me, not only as an academic, but as a fan.

Bacon-Smith has taken on a daunting task: reporting on a cultural phenomenon both as an engaged participant and as an unbiased observer. Her position is typical of the ethnologist who …

Shaped Charges Having A Porous Tungsten Liner-An Experimental And Theoretical Study Of Metal Compression, Jet Formation And Penetration Mechanics, Brian Edward Fuchs Jan 1997

Shaped Charges Having A Porous Tungsten Liner-An Experimental And Theoretical Study Of Metal Compression, Jet Formation And Penetration Mechanics, Brian Edward Fuchs

Dissertations

The use of porous tungsten as a liner for shaped charges to improve their penetration was proposed by Ki-Hwan Oh in his invention disclosure "Shock Extrusion of Ingots from Powders or Solids", at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro NM on June 7, 1988. The intention was to increase the ductility of the normally brittle metal by heating the liner to a high temperature by shock compaction during its acceleration just before jet formation.

The feasibility of increasing the ductility of tungsten in this way is the subject of the present study. The theory and prior experimental …
