When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa Jan 1997

When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a discussion about new reproductive technologies and the ethical implications of those technologies. Until now, fetal personhood was the focus of pro-choice and pro-life groups battling about abortion versus women's rights. However, new reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation further complicate the foundation upon which traditional abortion arguments are based. The focus of the argument should be shifted from fetal personhood to a more comprehensive argument for the respect of the sanctity of human life. This shift would force society to address the more crucial issues which have led us to abortion and new …

A Study Of The Landscaped Environments In Urban Resort Hotels As An Inducement For Secondary Commercial Activities: Three Case Studies In Las Vegas, Jianping Shu Jan 1997

A Study Of The Landscaped Environments In Urban Resort Hotels As An Inducement For Secondary Commercial Activities: Three Case Studies In Las Vegas, Jianping Shu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzed types, layout, and space relationships of landscape environments and commercial areas in urban resort casino hotels, and investigated three resort casino hotels in Las Vegas as case studies to examine how developed landscaped environments function and provide an amenity which can enhance commercial activity. A systematic analysis of this symbiotic relationship between landscape environments and commercial space has demonstrated the relative effectiveness of combining these elements as an interactive design concept when compared with treating gardens as a feature separate from commercial space; The analysis process was conducted by site visitations to analyze the space relationship between …

Copper, Zinc, Silver, And Lead Concentrations And Distributions In Mine Waste Ore At Keystone Near Ely, Nevada, Joseph B Wright Jan 1997

Copper, Zinc, Silver, And Lead Concentrations And Distributions In Mine Waste Ore At Keystone Near Ely, Nevada, Joseph B Wright

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper investigates the concentrations and distributions of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), silver (Ag), and lead (Pb) in the Keystone mining waste rock mound. This study employs flame atomic absorption spectrometry for the analysis of ore samples that were totally dissolved, water leaches of ore samples, and dissolved plant material. This study suggests that the Keystone mound contains low grade ore of about 0.08%, or approximately one fifth of the 0.4% established by the mining operations during the 1930s as unprofitable ore. The data show that Cu, Zn and Ag concentrations increase from the top of the mound to the …

Redox Polymers For Cyanide Ion Decomposition, Yu Zhang Jan 1997

Redox Polymers For Cyanide Ion Decomposition, Yu Zhang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Insoluble, macroporous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers bearing redox N-alkyl-N-chlorosulfonamide functional groups were used for removal of cyanide from aqueous solutions. These resins contain active chlorine and show oxidative properties. The use of these resins for oxidation of cyanide to less or nontoxic compounds was investigated in aqueous media containing different concentrations of cyanide and different pH values. Examples of the use of these resins as a polymer-supported reagent for oxidation of cyanide under static and dynamic conditions were given. Active chlorine readily oxidizes cyanide to cyanate. The decomposition of cyanate was also studied. The two decomposition methods investigated were oxidation with redox …

Children's Perspectives On Coping Strategies Used For Asthma, Terri A Dymeck Jan 1997

Children's Perspectives On Coping Strategies Used For Asthma, Terri A Dymeck

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Asthma is the most common chronic pulmonary disease among American children. There is limited research describing how children cope with asthma, and evidence suggests that many of these children demonstrate poor coping ability. This study, originally performed by Ryan-Wenger and Walsh (1994), describes the relationship between the frequency and effectiveness of coping strategies personally used by school-age children to manage asthma. Additional questions were incorporated to provide an objective measurement of coping and augment the original research; The Schoolagers' Coping Strategies Inventory (SCSI) and a demographic questionnaire were mailed to children with asthma and their parents. Data analysis {dollar}(N=65){dollar} demonstrated …

The Grid Sketcher: An Autocad-Based Tool For Conceptual Design Processes, Brian Martin Gardner Jan 1997

The Grid Sketcher: An Autocad-Based Tool For Conceptual Design Processes, Brian Martin Gardner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Sketching with pencil and paper is reminiscent of the varied, rich, and loosely defined formal processes associated with conceptual design. Architects actively engage such creative paradigms in their exploration and development of conceptual design solutions. The Grid Sketcher, as a conceptual sketching tool, presents one possible computer implementation for enhancing and supporting these processes. It effectively demonstrates the facility with which current technology and the computing environment can enhance and simulate sketching intents and expectations; Typically with respect to design, the position taken is that the two are virtually void of any fundamental commonality. A designer's thoughts are intuitive, at …

Trace Element And Polysaccharide Sorption In A Lacustrine Biofilm, Ephraim G Morris Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Media Exposure, Personal Experience And Education On The Public's Perceptions Of People With Disabilities: A Correlational Study, Melissa Lynn Reichley Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Media Exposure, Personal Experience And Education On The Public's Perceptions Of People With Disabilities: A Correlational Study, Melissa Lynn Reichley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Relationship Between Media Exposure, Personal Experience and Education on the Public's Perceptions of Disabilities seeks to determine whether there is any correlation between people's opinions about people with disabilities (PWDs), and their media consumption, education, and experience or contact with PWDs. The author compares such perceptions between respondents with and without disabilities. While research suggests nondisabled people view people with disabilities to varying degrees of negativity depending on the level and type of disability and accompanying social stigma attached, this researcher questions whether frequency of media exposure is having a positive influence on media consumers' perceptions of PWDs (which …

Habitat Patch Dynamics Of Desert Bighorn Sheep Ovis Canadensis Nelsoni In The Eastern Mojave Desert, Darren Del Divine Jan 1997

Habitat Patch Dynamics Of Desert Bighorn Sheep Ovis Canadensis Nelsoni In The Eastern Mojave Desert, Darren Del Divine

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The individual chapters of this Dissertation were designed to examine desert bighorn habitat, and the disjunct nature of that habitat. The findings of the first chapter illustrated that although 30 m elevation data yielded a more accurate depiction of the landscape, 100 m data was still adequate for determining habitat quality. The second chapter illustrated that the traditional bighorn habitat model was inadequate when applied to four Eastern Mojave Desert mountain ranges because of its unrealistic distance to permanent water requirement. It was also determined that a single habitat definition could not be formulated that worked equally well on all …

Heat Shock Proteins As Indicators Of Environmental Stress, Arthur Louis Castle Jan 1997

Heat Shock Proteins As Indicators Of Environmental Stress, Arthur Louis Castle

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In order to determine whether heat shock proteins (HSP) can be used as indicators of environmental stress in the mammalian organism Peromyscus leucopus, three doses of each of two chemical stresses, cadmium chloride and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), were given intraperitoneally for 14 days. Proteins extracted from liver samples were compared by one-dimensional gel electrophoresis to liver protein samples from heat shocked and control animals. HSPs of 105,78, and 43 kDa were cadmium inducible. Non-heat shocked cadmium inducible proteins of 118, 55, and 47 kDa were seen. 2,4,5-T induced an increase in a 91 kDa protein. Low level cadmium induction of …

The Relationship Between Parenting Style And Chilren's Anger, Aggressive Behavior, And Perception Of Intention, Patricia Bardina, Michelle Wilson Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Parenting Style And Chilren's Anger, Aggressive Behavior, And Perception Of Intention, Patricia Bardina, Michelle Wilson

Modern Psychological Studies

This study examined the relationship between parenting style and preschoolers' perceptions of intention, their anger, and their aggressive behavior. Each child was told eight variations of the same story and then was asked to rate the characters' intentions and anger. The parents were given the Modified PARI (Emmerich, 1969) and the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1983) to measure parenting style and the child's aggressive behavior. A regression analysis resulted in a significant Beta score of .41 (p<. 02) between hostility rejection parenting style and the child's perception of intention. Previous research shows a relationship between perception of intention and anger or aggressive behavior (Rotenberg, 1985; Fine, 1980); thus, the results of this study suggest that perception of intention could serve as a mediator between hostile parenting and anger or aggressive behavior.

A Historical Review Of Disgust, Amanda Burlington, Chad Mcdaniel, David O. Wilson Jan 1997

A Historical Review Of Disgust, Amanda Burlington, Chad Mcdaniel, David O. Wilson

Modern Psychological Studies

Although disgust was identified as a basic emotion 125 years ago (Darwin, 1965), no psychological theory has focused on disgust as a key concept. Although many prominent scientists such as Freud, Darwin, and Ma/son have addressed the topic of disgust in their research, none have focused solely on the causes and consequences of disgust. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the literature concerning disgust and to demonstrate how disgust is a meaningful concept worthy of major focus in psychological research, theories, and application.

Congressional Self-Discipline: The Constitutionality Of Supermajority Rules, Susan Low Bloch Jan 1997

Congressional Self-Discipline: The Constitutionality Of Supermajority Rules, Susan Low Bloch

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Congress needs to be more disciplined. It has at times become sloppy and even cavalier. When, for example, Congress enacted the federal Gun-Free School Zone Act of 1990, it was asking for trouble. Neither the legislation nor the legislative history said anything about any effect on interstate commerce. It was therefore not surprising to see the Supreme Court strike the law down in United States v. Lopez.

Shareholder Enforced Market Discipline: How Much Is Too Much?, Eric J. Gouvin Jan 1997

Shareholder Enforced Market Discipline: How Much Is Too Much?, Eric J. Gouvin

Faculty Scholarship

This Article considers the federal banking regulation regime implemented in response to the widespread bank failures of the 1980s and early 1990s. The first section of the Article examines the moral hazard problem created by the presence of the deposit insurance scheme and the market discipline debate that has attempted to correct the moral hazard problem. The Author argues that the law has evolved to make bank holding companies the primary enforcers of market discipline. The Article’s second section examines the specific regulatory changes that have been designed to create an incentive for bank holding companies to impose discipline on …

Genetics And Functions Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (Hsv-1) Glycoprotein K (Gk) In Virus Envelopment And Egress., Sukhanya Jayachandra Jan 1997

Genetics And Functions Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (Hsv-1) Glycoprotein K (Gk) In Virus Envelopment And Egress., Sukhanya Jayachandra

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

HSV-1(KOS)$\Delta$gK, a virus lacking the UL53 gene coding for glycoprotein K(gK) was constructed, characterized and compared to the partially deleted gK-null virus HSV-1(F)-gK$\beta$. $\Delta$gK and F-gK$\beta$ viruses produced microscopic plaques on Vero cells at 48 hours post infection. F-gK$\beta$ plaques at 72 hours post infection contained fused cells (syn), while $\Delta$gK plaques resembled wild-type KOS plaques ($syn\sp+$). $\Delta$gK replicated efficiently in exponentially dividing Vero cells whereas F-gK$\beta$ yields were 10 and 1000-fold lower than $\Delta$gK yields in HEp-2 or log-phase Vero cells, respectively. Electron micrographs of $\Delta$gK-infected Vero cells revealed large numbers of capsids in the nuclei of Vero, but …

Acute Effects Of Passive Muscle Stretching On The Stretch-Shortening Phenomenon., Andrew Cornwell Jan 1997

Acute Effects Of Passive Muscle Stretching On The Stretch-Shortening Phenomenon., Andrew Cornwell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two experiments examined the acute effects of passive muscle stretching on the performance of a skill (vertical jump) which takes advantage of the stretch-shortening phenomenon. Because recent work suggests that passive stretching might impede the mechanisms (elastic and myoelectrical potentiation) thought to be responsible for this phenomenon, it was hypothesized that stretching would decrease the jump height of jumps executed with a preparatory countermovement (CMJ), but not the jump height of those initiated from a static, squatting position (SJ). In the first experiment, subjects performed CMJ and SJ jumps under two different conditions: after passively stretching the knee and hip …

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemh Gene., Ekaterina Vladislavova Kanazireva Jan 1997

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemh Gene., Ekaterina Vladislavova Kanazireva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacterium, synthesizes four tetrapyrrole end products: heme, bacteriochlorophyll, siroheme and vitamin B$\sb{12}$ via the common tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway. The biosynthesis of tetrapyrroles in R. capsulatus is a complex and precisely controlled process which has been under extensive investigation. In order to study the regulation of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, the R. capsulatus hemH gene was cloned by complementation of an E. coli $\Delta hemH$ mutant and sequenced. The enzyme ferrochelatase, encoded by the hemH gene, catalyzes the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX, thus producing heme. The consensus ferrochelatase signature sequence was found in the …

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Nitroarenes: Mutagenicity, Oxygen Consumption, Toxicity, And Xenobiotic Radical Production., Caroline Ann Metosh-Dickey Jan 1997

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Nitroarenes: Mutagenicity, Oxygen Consumption, Toxicity, And Xenobiotic Radical Production., Caroline Ann Metosh-Dickey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The nitroreduction of 4NQO and five structural analogs were studied with respect to radical production and mutagenicity. In the umu assay, 4NQO was the most mutagenic analog. Addition of microsomal and cytosolic protein from induced and uninduced rat liver samples decreased 4NQO mutagenicity in the standard strain (Salmonella typhimurium TA 1535/psk1002) 4NQO mutagenicity was also found to be decreased in the nitroreductase-deficient strain (Salmonella typhimurium TA1535NR/psk1002). In several strains of the Protox$\rm\sp{TM}$ assay 4NQO yielded the highest induction rate as compared to other compounds tested. In the presence of ascorbate 4NQO cytotoxicity, but not mutagenicity, was substantially enhanced. Oxygen consumption …
