The move in the United States to restructure the electric power industry will present the oil and gas industry with synergistic opportunities that have been widely discussed in the trade press. The commentary has focused, however, upon competition in the public utility industry and the effects of the wave of mergers that increased competition is likely to cause.
This paper will explore an incidental benefit presented to oil and gas producers by the increased flexibility of electric distribution companies - the possibility that oil or gas produced from a property can be traded, royalty free, for electricity or other services, …

Genetics, Iq, Determinism, And Torts: The Example Of Discovery In Lead Exposure Litigation, Jennifer Wriggins
Genetics, Iq, Determinism, And Torts: The Example Of Discovery In Lead Exposure Litigation, Jennifer Wriggins
Faculty Publications
This article discusses a disturbing development in tort litigation in which defendants use deterministic, genetics-based ideas about individuals and their families to undercut and deflect attention from personal injury claims. Lead exposure litigation involving cognitive injuries claimed on behalf of children who have ingested lead paint is the context of this development. The most extreme manifestation to date has been the efforts in several states to compel relatives of lead-exposed children (usually mothers) to have IQ and psychological testing, even though they are not parties to the litigation. Rule 35 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and its state …

A Preliminary Study Of Trunk Kinematics During Walking In Normal Subjects, Lisa R. Elders, Heather L. Greenwald, Celeste A. Sartor
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to systematically describe the three-dimensional trunk kinematics in normal subjects, to establish a baseline for comparison to future research in gait analysis and aid in the identification of pathological gait. Seventeen volunteers between the ages of twenty and fifty, who met criteria for normal subjects, participated in this study. Trunk kinematic data were collected using an optoelectronic technique. An ensemble average of trunk kinematic data in each of the cardinal planes was plotted in degrees of motion versus percentage of gait cycle. A distinct pattern of trunk kinematics during gait was found in this …

Feminist Theory: Gender, Race And Recidivism, Amie M Shuck
Feminist Theory: Gender, Race And Recidivism, Amie M Shuck
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Feminists and women of color have criticized criminological theories for being developed by white middle-class men to explain white male delinquency, and thus, are limited in their understanding of crime and deviance within a gender or racial context. The purpose of this study is to use a series of logistic regression models to evaluate this assertion regarding criminological 'theories' of recidivism. The results indicate that there are substantive differences in statistically significant coefficients, models explanatory power, and percent improvement in models ability to correctly classify recidivists between gender, race and gender/race models. These findings suggest that further research should be …

A Reevaluation Of Lower Colorado Buff Ware Ceramics: Redefining The Patayan In Southern Nevada, Gregory Richard Seymour
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Archaeological investigations in the Las Vegas area have collected significant ceramic data that have yet to be the subject of a systematic analysis. This thesis addresses issues relating to trade, exchange, and the manufacture of Lower Colorado Buff Ware ceramics found in the Las Vegas Valley. Archival research, and examination of representative ceramic assemblages from this region, address problems with existing regional models, including chronologic placement, ethnic origin, and culture change. Previous typological models, and past and present environmental conditions are presented, as well as a cultural historic context in which to place this data. Finally, a model of settlement …
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do: The Dissolution Of Romantic Relationships, Megan Ann Sheehan
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do: The Dissolution Of Romantic Relationships, Megan Ann Sheehan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This investigation of the dissolution of dating relationships was based on the surveys of 78 subjects. Subjects who reported being the rejectee experienced more distress than subjects who reported being the initiators or subjects who reported mutual breakups. As the length of the relationship increased, distress over the breakup increased. One component of the study examined the transformation of romantic relationships to cross-sex friendships. Nearly half of the subjects reported that they were either friends, close friends, or best friends with their former partner. The two variables which showed a significant correlation with friendship after dating were friendship prior to …
A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter
A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Roasting pits in southern Nevada are commonly thought to have functioned to process agave. This assumption is based on the presence of agave quids, the proximity of roasting pits to agave stands, and on ethnographic accounts of agave roasting. Soil samples from two roasting pit complexes confirm this contention, and suggest a secondary use of the features to singe spines off cacti. These conclusions are supported by research on Arizona Strip and Hohokam roasting pits.
Natural Light As Religious Symbol In Selected European And American Religious Buildings, Mary Theresa Venable
Natural Light As Religious Symbol In Selected European And American Religious Buildings, Mary Theresa Venable
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study investigates the use of light, in the form of daylight, as a symbolic element, in selected European and American religious buildings. It first examines the symbolic meaning of light in various religions, the psychological and physiological influences of light on humans, and the historical tradition of light in religious buildings, with its correlation to the religious practices conducted in those buildings. Various strategies for employing daylight are then surveyed. This paper then presents case studies of notable religious buildings which put into practice the techniques previously identified, evaluating the resulting symbolic expression of daylight in view of the …

The Relationship Between Chronic Alcohol Abuse And Information Processing Ability In Older Adults, Christopher P. Bertram
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The issue of alcohol use and abuse among older adults is one that is gaining attention in current literature. Although it is an important issue, empirical evidence within the domain of alcohol, aging, and cognition, is sparse. Thus, the proposed preliminary study was designed to examine the relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and information processing speed in older adults. Eight matched participants (4 per group, mean age 56 years) were divided into two groups: Alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Participants were assigned to their respective group and matched based on the information provided on a health questionnaire. All participants completed a series …
Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush
Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The comic book became a mass medium during a series of defining moments in twentieth-century American history. By telling and retelling narratives of individual achievement during the Great Depression, and tales of patriotism during World War II, comic books gained a popular audience rivaling that of agenda-setting national periodicals such as Life or The Saturday Evening Post. In the first postwar decade, however, publishers experimented with themes of crime, horror, teen romance, and social satire in ways that provoked a wave of public hostility. Crusading psychiatrists, politicians, civic groups, and religious leaders led a campaign against the industry that revealed …
Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen
Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Yield management is an approach to pricing that is often used by industries in which the marginal production cost is relatively high, while the marginal sales cost is relatively low. The hotel industry meets this criterion. Industry publications demonstrate a keen interest in the revenue enhancing potential of yield management, but there has been little research on the extent to which this pricing technique is actually utilized by hotel general managers; This research tests the proposition that there are eight basic elements of yield management in hotels. The degree to which yield management is practiced is indicated by the extent …
The Relationship Between Plasma Potassium And The Ventilatory Drift During Continuous Steady State Exercise, Jutta Dinenna
The Relationship Between Plasma Potassium And The Ventilatory Drift During Continuous Steady State Exercise, Jutta Dinenna
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Recently, potassium has been investigated as a possible metabolite involved in the control exercise ventilation. Graded and incremental cycle tests using healthy subjects show a strong correlation between plasma potassium (K{dollar}\sp+{dollar}) and ventilation (V{dollar}\sb{\rm E}).{dollar} However, the role of potassium has not been investigated during steady state exercise. During steady state exercise researchers have observed a ventilatory drift that cannot be accounted for by lactate or expired carbon dioxide (VCO{dollar}\sb2).{dollar} The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between plasma K{dollar}\sp+{dollar} levels and the ventilatory drift during steady state exercise. Participants cycled at 60% VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} max. for 30 …

In addition, the study examined the relationship between pet bonding, selected demographic variables and QoL among pet owners and non-pet owners; The subjects consisted of 136 pet owners and 101 non-pet owners from selected church congregations in a Southwestern state. Results of the t-test indicated no significant difference in the QoL scores between pet owners and non-pet owners (p =.232). Yet on a qualitative level, pet owners (90.3%), felt that their pet did …
Motion Compensated Images Using Rgb Data, Jin Ah Jeon
Motion Compensated Images Using Rgb Data, Jin Ah Jeon
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A motion compensation algorithm correcting not only for translation but also for rotation, scaling, and shearing, is investigated in this thesis. Our work also includes noise detection and noise compensation due to the variation of the light. The probability distribution of the noise is investigated. The variation of the light could occur due to the voltage variation or due to the sunlight variation in the presence of clouds, or other reasons. Practical results have also been obtained by applying our theory to moving pictures.
The Relationship Between Health Beliefs And Use Of Child Car Safety Restraints Among Mothers Of Young Children, Stacy Lynn Leifried
The Relationship Between Health Beliefs And Use Of Child Car Safety Restraints Among Mothers Of Young Children, Stacy Lynn Leifried
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Though preventable, injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death and disability in childhood. The literature supports the efficacy of child car safety restraints, yet despite this fact, nonuse rates remain high. Using the Health Belief Model, the purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine the relationship between health beliefs, cues to action, selected demographics, and mothers' use of child car safety restraints among low income mothers of children less than five years of age; Locus of control, maternal seatbelt use, and child's age were demonstrated to be significant predictors of child car safety …
