Comparative Salt And Waterlogging Tolerance Of An Introduced Grass (Agropyron Elongatum [Host] P. Beauv.) And Two Herbaceous Australian Species (Podolepis Gracilis [Lehm.] And Danthonia Caespitosa Gaud.), Bryan William Duff

Theses : Honours

Increasing land degradation is recognised as an immediate worldwide threat. Human induced soil salinity is probably the major cause of land abandonment, through its adverse effects on plant growth. Salinity is a major focus of environmental researchers because it is recognised that counter-strategies can potentially reclaim both artificially degraded lands and intrinsically saline areas. Currently, strategies to combat salinity require that land use is changed, since restoration to a past use is usually economically impractical or impossible. Biological strategies show most promise. Revegetation of degraded soils with hardy plant species has met with considerable success, and shows promise for the …

Three Metaphors For The Competencies Acquired In The Public Speaking Class, Michael Osborn Jan 1997

Three Metaphors For The Competencies Acquired In The Public Speaking Class, Michael Osborn

Basic Communication Course Annual

The many skills taught in the basic public speaking class come together in three fundamental metaphors. The first of these, the speaker as builder, suggests we need to shape our surroundings through the spoken word. The second, the speaker as weaver, includes the arts of shaping symbols into the fabric of a speech, and of designing evidence and proofs into the tapestry of argument. The third, the speaker as climber, emphasizes overcoming interference. Barriers of fear, indifference, suspicion, and cultural variation recede as speakers and listeners learn to climb them.

Two Heads Are Better Than One? Setting Realizable Goals In The Basic Course, Glen Williams Jan 1997

Two Heads Are Better Than One? Setting Realizable Goals In The Basic Course, Glen Williams

Basic Communication Course Annual

Establishing goals is central to the success of the basic course. The degree to which those goals are realized depends, in large measure, upon the manner in which they are established and reviewed. This article assists course directors and instructional staff by examining the process of defining objectiveness, a process which encompasses goals, mission, and vision and which benefits from widespread, active involvement. This article presents sample objectives for consideration, and it notes the conditions under which the process of defining objectives thrives or is threatened.

Inductive Reasoning In Persecutory Delusional Thought, Ian Walter Shelley Baker Jan 1997

Inductive Reasoning In Persecutory Delusional Thought, Ian Walter Shelley Baker

School of Psychology Theses

Delusions are considered to be one of the primary symptoms of psychosis but until recently have received little empirical investigation. One approach has been to examine the extent to which deluded individuals demonstrate cognitive biases which are different from those of normal controls in inductive reasoning tasks. In this study two hypothesis testing tasks were used to investigate cognitive biases in a group of people with persecutory delusions compared to a group whose delusions had remitted and a normal control group. Participants completed two tasks consisting of a series of visual discrimination problems in which they had to choose between …

Intrusive Memories, Coping And Outcome In Depression: Towards A Traumatic Processing Model?, Julie Diane Parker Jan 1997

Intrusive Memories, Coping And Outcome In Depression: Towards A Traumatic Processing Model?, Julie Diane Parker

School of Psychology Theses

Recent studies (e.g. Kuyken & Brewin, 1994a) have noted the presence of high levels of disturbing intrusive memories in depressed women. Intrusive memories are best known as a post-traumatic symptom and have received considerable attention from researchers in this field. The presence of a post-traumatic symptom in depression indicates that trauma models might be useful in refining our understanding and treatment of depression. Predictions based on theories of post-traumatic processing were tested in relation to the intrusive memories of a sample of 26 depressed women. The women showed a pattern of intrusive memory experiences which indicate that their memories are …

Continuous Vs Rotational Stocking Of Warm-Season Grasses At Three Stocking Rates, Bruce Anderson, Mike Trammell, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 1997

Continuous Vs Rotational Stocking Of Warm-Season Grasses At Three Stocking Rates, Bruce Anderson, Mike Trammell, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Pastures containing big and little bluestem, indiangrass, sideoats gramu, and switchgrass were stocked with 2.1, 2.7, and 3.3 yearling steers/acre from June to August. Continuous stocking and six-paddock rotations were used. Grazing terminated early on most continuously stocked pastures due to low herbage mass. As stocking rate increased, ADG declined; continuous Stocking produced highest (1.6 lbs) and lowest(. 69 lbs) ADG. Gai1n/acre was unaffected by stocking rate using rotational stocking (224 lbs/acre) but declined, from 250 to 133 lbs/acre as stocking rate increased using continuous stocking. Continuous stocking caused big bluestem to replace little bluestem and indiangrass and caused a slight …

Effects Of Sire Epd, Dam Traits And Calf Traits On Calving Difficulty And Subsequent Reproduction Of Two-Year-Old Heifers, Dave Colburn, Gene H. Deutscher, Don C. Adams, Merlyn K. Nielsen, Pete Olson Jan 1997

Effects Of Sire Epd, Dam Traits And Calf Traits On Calving Difficulty And Subsequent Reproduction Of Two-Year-Old Heifers, Dave Colburn, Gene H. Deutscher, Don C. Adams, Merlyn K. Nielsen, Pete Olson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A three-year study evaluated effects of sire birth weight EPD, heifer and calf traits on valuing difficulty and subsequent rebreeding of two-year-old cows. MARC II yearling heifers (n=550) were assigned for breeding to one of four angus sires with birth weight EPD of -2.1, -1.8, +6.3 and +5.9 lb. Of all heifer weights, only dam birth weight affected calving difficulty score. Heifers requiring caesareans had smallest pelvic areas. Calving difficulty increased as calf birth weight and external measurements increased. Low EPD sires produced calves with smaller head and foot circumferences and less dystocia. Degree of calving difficulty did not affect …

The Effect On Feeding And Wheel Running Behaviours Of Housing Rats In Pairs, Roison M. O'Connor Jan 1997

The Effect On Feeding And Wheel Running Behaviours Of Housing Rats In Pairs, Roison M. O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The effects on feeding of moving animals from individual- to pair-housing were explored in the present three experiments. Wheel access is known to result in a temporary suppression of feeding. The move to pair-housing was compared with the effect of wheel access. In Experiment l, a group of rats was moved from individual to pair-housing (IP group) and compared to a group of individually-housed rats (IND group) and a group of chronically pair-housed rats (PAIR group). The animals in the IP group showed a temporary (three days) suppression in feeding (initially 23%). When half of the IND and PAIR group …
