Widrick, Jeffrey J., and Robert H. Fitts. Peak force and maximal shortening velocity of soleus fibers after non-weight-bearing and resistance exercise. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(1): 189–195, 1997.—This study examined the effectiveness of resistance exercise as a countermeasure to non-weight-bearing-induced alterations in the absolute peak force, normalized peak force (force/fiber cross-sectional area), peak stiffness, and maximal shortening velocity (V o) of single permeabilized type I soleus muscle fibers. Adult rats were subjected to one of the following treatments: normal weight bearing (WB), non-weight bearing (NWB), or NWB with exercise treatments (NWB+Ex). The hindlimbs of the NWB and NWB+Ex rats were …

Contractile Properties Of Rat, Rhesus Monkey, And Human Type I Muscle Fibers, Jeffrey J. Widrick, Janell Romatowski, M. Karhanek, Robert H. Fitts
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
It is well known that skeletal muscle intrinsic maximal shortening velocity is inversely related to species body mass. However, there is uncertainty regarding the relationship between the contractile properties of muscle fibers obtained from commonly studied laboratory animals and those obtained from humans. In this study we determined the contractile properties of single chemically skinned fibers prepared from rat, rhesus monkey, and human soleus and gastrocnemius muscle samples under identical experimental conditions. All fibers used for analysis expressed type I myosin heavy chain as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Allometric coefficients for type I fibers from each muscle …
Leadership Within The Camps : A Study Of Holocaust Resistance, Meredith Ann Fallon
Leadership Within The Camps : A Study Of Holocaust Resistance, Meredith Ann Fallon
Honors Theses
The primary question underlying my research is, "What environmental factors, individual characteristics, behaviors, beliefs, and socialization factors enabled or ignited certain Jews to emerge as leaders within the concentration camps during WW II?" This study could reveal valuable information concerning why, how, and what types of leaders emerge in highly adverse and life threatening situations, and how some of these leaders were able to achieve success.

Science Fiction: Rhetoric, Authenticity, Textuality And The Museum Of Jurassic Technology, Jeremiah Dyehouse
Science Fiction: Rhetoric, Authenticity, Textuality And The Museum Of Jurassic Technology, Jeremiah Dyehouse
Honors Papers
About two years ago I became interested in museums as rhetorical entities. I took a course at the Allen Memorial Art Museum where I got a sense of how arguments are created through the techniques of visual display, the socalled "informatics" of museum exhibition. In an art museum, however, these informatics are always bound into a relationship with the aura of the art object as artifact. In the context of a cult of art (an art museum?), the physical fact of an art object's existence can never be rhetorically negotiated. Even if nothing else is fixed, its physical presence acts …

Investigations Into The Causes Of Early Larval Mortality In Cultured Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus L.), David Alves
Investigations Into The Causes Of Early Larval Mortality In Cultured Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus L.), David Alves
Open Access Master's Theses
Experiments were conducted to investigate larval mortality in cultured summer flounder during the first two weeks after hatch. The importance of feeding success, parentage, addition of algae, water quality, and the microbial community to mortality during this period were investigated. Larvae were raised in 2-L bowls at initial densities of 50 and 75/L with light aeration, 12L:12D photoperiod, and regular 1-L water changes. In all experiments mortalities were recorded and removed daily. In the first two experiments daily samples of larvae were taken to assess feeding success and to relate that to survival. The second experiment investigated the effects of …
Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral
Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral
Open Access Master's Theses
Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) is a process that unites government and the community, science and management, sectoral and pubic interests to wisely protect and develop coastal ecosystems and resources. As funding for ICM continues to increase, investments are often made quickly, without adequate consultation with the stakeholders and host institutions. This can lead to programs and projects that lack focus and outstrip the host institution's capacity and capabilities. By thinking strategically about the current coastal management problems and pressures and developing a strategy document using an organized and strategic process, investment can be made wisely and at a scale that …

A Strategic Recycling Plan For U.R.I, Amrita Roy
Open Access Master's Theses
Statement of Problem: Inadequate planning coupled with non-mandatory recycling practices has lead to a low recycling response at the University of Rhode Island. The student, staff and faculty suffer from lack of awareness of the appropriate recycling procedures. Compared to successful recycling initiatives in schools all over the country, URI falls low on the scale. In June 1989, URI started a campaign to implement campus wide recycling. The goal was to achieve 12% recovery rates (this is percentage of amount of materials by weightage that recycled out of the total waste stream) by 1993. It is unfortunate that in the …

Public Playgrounds: An Examination Of Current Issues Associated With Public Play Facilities, Albert V. Ranaldi Jr.
Open Access Master's Theses
The issues surrounding playgrounds are in need of attention. This research paper attempts to address the safety and developmental concerns regarding playground equipment and design. Since the most immediate concern is safety, the discussion will focus on issues concerning playground safety. A brief history of playground development, developmental theories of play, and safety issues will be presented. Discussion of these issues will lead to recommendations for a mandatory public playground safety policy and program. The standards for the safety policy and program will be adopted from the 1991 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Handbook For Public Playground Safety, the 1993 …

Improving Open-Space Subdivisions In Charlton, Massachusetts: Connecting Back To The Land, Bruce E. Keller
Open Access Master's Theses
In Charlton, Massachusetts, the current open-space subdivision option doesn't work well for the benefit of people or wildlife, but rather allows the developer to cut costs without giving a more beneficial design in return. Open space "islands" are being created that have no connectivity with one another, making them little more than buffers of undisturbed land within and among developments. While these buffers are somewhat useful from an aesthetic perspective, better regulations and design guidelines would be helpful in creating more useable "corridors" for wildlife and trails for people, which in return will help to preserve wildlife biodiversity and provide …

Distribution And Status Of The Ozark Shiner, Notropos Ozarcanus Meek, In Arkansas, Henry W. Robison
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Ozark shiner, Notropis ozarcanus, an endemic species of the Ozark Highlands, was studied from 1994-1995 to determine its present distribution and conservation status in Arkansas. One-hundred and four collections of fishes were made from throughout the historic range of the Ozark shiner. A total of 91 Ozark shiners was collected during the two-year study. The present state distribution is described as well as the conservation status of the Ozark shiner in Arkansas. The largest populations seem to be present in the protected Buffalo River.

Integrating Gis And Remote Sensing With Ecosystem Research, Suzanne Wiley, Robert C. Weih Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
In the Phase II Ecosystem Management Research Program in the Ouachita and Ozark National Forests, an interdisciplinary group of scientists are evaluating the effects and trade-offs of partial cutting methods in a replicated stand level study. Information from approximately 2,000 plots is being collected by more than fifty researchers during this five-year project with plans to continue data collection long term. To evaluate the effects of different management strategies and their interactions with forest resources, data must be brought into a common format and made available to all researchers. To this end, a data support system was developed which utilizes …

Are Tuna And Dolphins The Same? A Rule Of Reason Approach To Resolve The Trade And Environment Conflict, Anantha K. Paruthipattu
LLM Theses and Essays
Trade and environment are both primary values in an ecologically and economically interdependent world; unleashing trade without regard to environmental impact is as detrimental as guarding the environment at the expense of trade and development. Tuna and dolphins have come to symbolize the policy struggle between trade and environment. In early 1990, the United States banned the import of tuna from Mexico and other countries that were fishing in a manner that damaged dolphins in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean. Mexico challenged this ban before a GATT Panel, which ruled against the United States and held that the tuna ban …

Yellagonga Wetlands: A Study Of The Water Chemistry And Aquatic Fauna, Adrianne Kinnear, Patrick Garnett, Hugo Bekle, K. Upton
Research outputs pre 2011
Wetlands worldwide are continually threatened by urbanisation and Western Australia is no exception. Since European settlement in 1829, it has been estimated that at least 75% of the wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain have disappeared (Halse, 1988). The remaining 25% continue to be threatened by eutrophication and pollution, changes in hydrology and water level patterns, clearing of riparian vegetation, aesthetic disruption and weed invasion (CALM, 1980; Davis and Rolls, 1987; Wrigley et al., 1991; Balla and Davis, 1995). These degradation components are interrelated and largely the consequence of the extensive removal of surrounding vegetation...
