A Study On The Differences Of Teaching Mathematics And Science Separately And Integrated, Dori Rodgers May 1997

A Study On The Differences Of Teaching Mathematics And Science Separately And Integrated, Dori Rodgers

Theses and Dissertations

This study determined if teaching science and mathematics with an integrated approach would increase students' achievement. It also determined whether males or females achieved higher in science and mathematics when taught with the integrated approach. as compared to teaching the two disciplines separately. It determined whether the attitudes of the fourth grade students improved when mathematics and science were taught with an integrated approach.

The group participating in this study consisted of one fourth grade class. The total population of the study was sixteen fourth grade, heterogeneously grouped students. The class consisted of twelve female and four male students.

Development Of Methods For Field Determination Of Chromium (Vi) In Water And Groundwater, David John Chesbro May 1997

Development Of Methods For Field Determination Of Chromium (Vi) In Water And Groundwater, David John Chesbro

Theses

In this study, methods for the determination of chromium (VI) in fresh water at low ppb levels for the use under field conditions were developed. The plan was to devise a simple and inexpensive on-site field method which would be useable by people who are not professional chemists. An investigation was carried out to develop a preconcentration and determination procedure for the analysis of chromium (VI) using anion-exchange membranes and/or resins. The chromium (VI) would be sorbed to the solid support and then treated with 1 ,5-diphenylcarabzide, a specific colorimetric reagent for chromium (VI), which forms a red complex upon …

Growth Of Grass Shrimp, Palaemonetes Pugio, In A Contaminated And An Uncontaminated Site, Suruchi Bhan May 1997

Growth Of Grass Shrimp, Palaemonetes Pugio, In A Contaminated And An Uncontaminated Site, Suruchi Bhan

Theses

Previous experiments have found that grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, from a contaminated site, Piles Creek (PC). in Linden. New Jersey, are larger than those from a relatively pristine reference site, Sheepshead Creek, located in Tuckerton (T), New Jersey.

This study investigated the possibility that PC conditions provide more food for the shrimp, possibly by being a eutrophic environment. thus allowing for greater growth. or that salinity, toxicants, or other factors at. PC stimulate growth. The current experiment indicated that PC conditions do not foster greater growth for the shrimp than T conditions and that PC shrimp are not inherently …

Theses

A bench scale investigation was conducted in a Plexiglass ™ Test cell 1 foot square by 2 feet in height, packed with 400 mesh sand to a density of 100 lb. /ft3. The sand was contaminated with a mixture of 10% ethanol and 90% water by weight having a total weight of 11.1 pounds, before it was packed in the test cell. A geotextile 1/2 inch thick was used as a simulated fracture and was placed 3 inches from the bottom of the tank. A siren and a whistle were tested in this fracture.

The data were divided …

Renin-Angiotensin System And Its Relationship To Arterial Pressure Regulation, Sami D. Saume May 1997

Renin-Angiotensin System And Its Relationship To Arterial Pressure Regulation, Sami D. Saume

Theses

The renal system is known to participate in the natural regulation of blood pressure. A renal system model that simulates interaction responses of renal output to arterial blood pressure was developed. The major components of this model are glomerular filtration rate, tubular sodium reabsorption, the renin-angiotensin system, Aldosterone secretion, and antidiuretic hormone secretion. The model's differential equations were coded using Vissim 1.2 student version. It was found that, the renal output increased as glomerular filtration rate, Aldosterone concentration, and blood pressure increased. Conversely, increasing antidiuretic hormone concentration lead to decreased renal output.

Additionally, Angiotensin II and Aldosterone concentrations increased as …

An Analytical Approach To Toxic Substance Replacement In Support Of Pollution Prevention, Ithan B. Zimmer May 1997

An Analytical Approach To Toxic Substance Replacement In Support Of Pollution Prevention, Ithan B. Zimmer

Theses

In support of pollution prevention and in accordance with Executive Order 12356 concerning pollution prevention, all federal agencies must comply with the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) chemical release reduction and pollution prevention planning. The inventory lists hundreds of chemicals and choosing those to replace and finding actual replacement chemicals or procedures is not always clear. This study focuses on an analytical approach to this problem by understanding the application of two substances. The representative chemicals are two volatile organic compounds (VOC), ethyl ether and ethanol, used as solvents in ammunition manufacturing.

Thirteen military specifications provide the cases involving ether. Ethanol's …

Mechanical Evaluation Of Pedicle Screw Fixation Of The Lumbar Spine, Ding Lu May 1997

Mechanical Evaluation Of Pedicle Screw Fixation Of The Lumbar Spine, Ding Lu

Theses

Pedicle screw fixation of the lumbar spine has been reported to increase fusion rates A biomechanical evaluation of four different pedicle screw implant systems, (AO. Rogozinski, TSRH and Wiltse). was performed to compare intrinsic device stiffness under conditions of flexion-compression and forty-five degree off-axis flexion-compression The effect on stiffness of the loosening of device members was also studied. Testing was done in load control using an electrohvdrualic testing machine. UHMWPe blocks are used to simulate the vertebra.

Assuming that stiffness is directly proportional to the probability of obtaining fusion. this study allows the ranking of the systems tested in their …

The Relationship Between Thermoregulatory And Haemodynamic Responses Of The Skin To Relaxation And Stress, Paul O. Nketia May 1997

The Relationship Between Thermoregulatory And Haemodynamic Responses Of The Skin To Relaxation And Stress, Paul O. Nketia

Theses

The present study investigated the effects of stress and relaxation on (1) EEG coherence and (2) peripheral blood flow.

EEG coherence of two meditators in two different but adjacent rooms was measured during eyes opened, eyes closed, single meditation and group meditation. The skin temperatures of the subjects together with their room temperatures were also recorded. EEG coherence plots (Cospar) showed a spread out of the alpha band to the beta, theta and occasionally to the delta wave bands during group meditation. The area above the 0.98 coherence threshold in the alpha band was greater during group meditation than during …

Computer Simulation Of Cerebrovascular Circulation : Assessment Of Intracranial Hemodynamics During Induction Of Anesthesia, Steven D. Wolk May 1997

Computer Simulation Of Cerebrovascular Circulation : Assessment Of Intracranial Hemodynamics During Induction Of Anesthesia, Steven D. Wolk

Theses

The purpose of this project was to develop a computer model of cerebrovascular hemodynamics interacting with a pharmacokinetic drug model to examine the effects of various stimuli during anesthesia on cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure.

The mathematical model of intracranial hemodynamics is a seven compartment constant volume system. A series of resistances relate blood and cerebrospinal fluid fluxes to pressure gradients between compartments. Arterial, venous, and tissue compliance are also included. Autoregulation is modeled by transmural pressure dependent arterial-arteriolar resistance. The effect of a drug (thiopental) on cerebrovascular circulation was simulated by a variable arteriolar-capillary resistance. Thiopental concentration, in …

Relative Dentifrice Abrasivity On Dentin And Enamel, Laura Marchetti May 1997

Relative Dentifrice Abrasivity On Dentin And Enamel, Laura Marchetti

Theses

The abrasive characteristics of six (6) brands of toothpastes on Enamel and Dentin material were assessed. Human teeth were sliced to expose the dentin surface and then polished using 3 μm and 0.25 μm diamond paste. The outside surface of the tooth (after slicing) was used "as is" for the enamel surface testing. The surface smoothness was evaluated prior to testing using a surface profiler and averaging four (4) to five (5) readings across the surface for each sample.

The tooth slices were then embedded into the acrylic plate surface by routing out an area with a dental drill and …

Ransomed/Redeemed - At What Price A Study Of The Λυτρον Group Of Words, Frederick Schmitt May 1997

Ransomed/Redeemed - At What Price A Study Of The Λυτρον Group Of Words, Frederick Schmitt

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

A major problem in word studies is how much of the meanings and implications found in earlier word usage carries over into later usage, or in moving from one language to another. Today when we use the words "ransom" or "redeem" many of the aspects common to their usage 200 years ago will not be inferred or understood by today's average hearer. Nor is it likely that most of the nuances of the corresponding biblical Greek and Hebrew terms for "ransom" and "redeem" would be picked up by today's audience. But was there a significant change in understanding in these …

Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett May 1997

Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

A bug tracking problem is used to introduce students to filtering and smoothing real-time data. A predictor-corrector filter/smoother algorithm is developed and a simulation platform is provided so that students can program and test implementations of the filter/smoother. The platform includes the ability to animate the simulation.

The tracking problem: A small computer bug is traveling around the $x-y$ plane trying to avoid detection. We can eliminate the bug if we can produce a reasonably accurate approximation to its trajectory.

We have a bug detecting device which can be pointed at the plane. It can measure the $x$ and $y$ …

Using Java And Html For Linear Algebra Instruction, Jonathan R. Senning May 1997

Using Java And Html For Linear Algebra Instruction, Jonathan R. Senning

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

This paper addresses some of the issues involved with using the HTML, JavaScript and Java to develop and serve a sequence of laboratory modules for use in teaching linear algebra. Attention is paid to the rationale for this approach as opposed to the more traditional approach of laboratory exercises executed using MATLAB or some similar computational tool. Several methods to display mathematics with HTML are described. Some implementation detail and a brief description of the HTML and Java based Linear Algebra Visualization Assistant (LAVA) is presented.

Marcus Is Walking: Scenes From The Road, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department May 1997

Marcus Is Walking: Scenes From The Road, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1996-1997 Season

On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the car, the play examines the emotional landscape we roam as we travel in our cars. Control, navigation, love and escape, are some of the themes explored. A protective father shepherds his son through the neighborhood on Halloween; an actor on his way to perform Hamlet provokes a rear-end collision and confrontation with a Czech émigré cab driver; a devastated businessman strikes up an unlikely alliance with a homeless woman who sleeps in his car. This is the landscape of human frailty and vulnerability, charm and strength; a playwright's whimsy combined with …
