Little Golden Bookstm: An Analysis Of Every Child’S Literature, Sandra Ballman-Burke Jun 1997

Little Golden Bookstm: An Analysis Of Every Child’S Literature, Sandra Ballman-Burke

Masters Theses

Modeling theory proposes that consequences received by the model are considered critical in determining whether or not modeled behaviors will be imitated (Bandura, Ross & Ross, 1961).

Despite the apparent significance of consequences, analyses of children's literature have failed to explore this link. Utilizing feminist research perspectives, I sought to examine variables explored in previous analyses of picture books, with emphasis on consequences received by models. I was interested in (a) consequences received by female and male characters when engaged in instrumental/independent activities (Kortenhaus & Demarest, 1993); (b) the ways in which female and male characters are stereotyped; and (c) …

History, Mission, And Visitors At The Kalamazoo Valley Museum In Kalamazoo, Michigan: A Study Of The Museum As Cultural Practice, Lynnette Z. King Jun 1997

History, Mission, And Visitors At The Kalamazoo Valley Museum In Kalamazoo, Michigan: A Study Of The Museum As Cultural Practice, Lynnette Z. King

Masters Theses

This study investigates the interrelationship between the museum, its mission, and its visitors. The history of museums in general and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum in particular shows how the mission developed in relationship to culture, community, and individuals. Observations and ethnographic interviews of visitors and staff, as well as drawings made by school children who had visited the museum were used to identify viewers' perceptions of the museum and its mission. The museum is guided by an official stated mission as well as various staff and administrative interpretations of the mission. Although the museum and its mission have changed through …

A Study Of An Under Hood Automotive Air-Conditioning Component For The Purposes Of Noise And Vibration Reduction, Charles Depasquale Jun 1997

A Study Of An Under Hood Automotive Air-Conditioning Component For The Purposes Of Noise And Vibration Reduction, Charles Depasquale

Theses

All automotive components are engineered to be as quiet and smooth running as possible. This takes into account structure borne noise as well as air borne noise. A standard air conditioning compressor is analyzed statically (outof- vehicle testing) in this study to better understand noise and vibration traits. Mode shapes of the compressor, associated with noise, are extracted in an operating frequency range and shown to be modeled after a simple two degree of freedom system. Bearing free play in the pulley is cited as another possible source of noise. Lastly, with the use of theoretical damping, the sound pressure …

Synthesis Of Biologically Active Substituted Chalcones, Kiel Steven Hoff Jun 1997

Synthesis Of Biologically Active Substituted Chalcones, Kiel Steven Hoff

Masters Theses

Two different synthetic routes to poly-hydroxylated chalcones are investigated. The wittig synthesis and protection of the hydroxyl functionalities by forming the methyl ether followed by the base catalyzed Claissen-schmidt reaction and then deprotection were investigated. It was demonstrated that the protection-condensation- deprotection route was more efficient. The antiviral activity of 2,2', 4' - trihydroxychalcone against the HIV virus is also presented.

Toward A Sociocultural Context For Understanding Violence And Disruption In Black Urban Schools And Communities, Linwood H. Cousins Jun 1997

Toward A Sociocultural Context For Understanding Violence And Disruption In Black Urban Schools And Communities, Linwood H. Cousins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article examines violence and disruption in a Black urban school and community. The author argues that an unempowering framework of culture has restricted our understanding of violence and other social issues affecting Black schools and communities. From such a backdrop, a sociocultural framework is presented that captures the strain, solidarity, and contemporary emergences that area part of school, American and Black culture, and a part of the context in which violence occurs in Black schools and communities. Broad implications are posited for human service policy, research, and direct practice.

The Immovable Object Versus The Irresistable Force: Rethinking The Relationship Between Secured Credit And Bankruptcy Policy, Lawrence Ponoroff, F. Stephen Knippenberg Jun 1997

The Immovable Object Versus The Irresistable Force: Rethinking The Relationship Between Secured Credit And Bankruptcy Policy, Lawrence Ponoroff, F. Stephen Knippenberg

Michigan Law Review

The last leaf in O. Henry's classic short story was hanging by a delicate thread, but it never fell. It never fell, of course, because it wasn't real; Old Behrman had painted it (and caught pneumonia for his trouble) in order to give Johnsy the will to live. The Supreme Court's decision in Dewsnup v. Timm is also hanging by a thread, following a barrage of scholarly criticism and more than four years of limiting case law and legislative incursions on the case's core conceptual rationale. But the holding in Dewsnup, unlike the last leaf, is very real. It has …

Experimental Spinal Fusion With Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 Without Decortication Of Osseous Elements, Harvinder Sandhu, Linda E.A. Kanim, Jeffrey M. Toth, J. Michael Kabo, David Liu, Rick B. Delamarter, Edgar G. Dawson

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Study Design. L4-L5 intertransverse process fusions were produced with 58 μg, 230 μg, or 920 μg of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 in 20 dogs. Eleven had traditional decortication of posterior elements before insertion of the implant. Nine were left undecorticated. All animals were evaluated 3 months after surgery.

Objectives. To determine whether decortication is a prerequisite for successful fusion in the presence of osteoinductive proteins such as bone morphogenetic protein-2.

Summary of Background Data. Recombinant osteoinductive proteins can induce de novo bone in ectopic soft-tissue sites in the absence of bone marrow elements. Traditional methods for achieving spinal fusion …

United States V. Boynton: A Bona Fide Reason For Applying A Subjective Standard To The Exceptions Of The Anti-Baiting Regulation, William E. Sulzer

Pace Environmental Law Review

In United States v. Boynton, the Fourth Circuit upheld the convictions of three defendants for hunting migratory birds over a baited area in violation of the anti-baiting regulation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (META). The Court, disagreeing with the Sixth Circuit, held that misdemeanor violation of the MBTA, including hunting over a baited area, are strict liability crimes, and thus an objective standard should be used to determine the applicability of the "bona fide agricultural operations or procedures" exception to the anti-baiting regulation. This holding demonstrates the difficulty that courts confront when deciding whether to apply an objective standard …

Design And Evaluation Of Multimedia Extensions For The Dlx Architecture, Brian Hughes Jun 1997

Design And Evaluation Of Multimedia Extensions For The Dlx Architecture, Brian Hughes

Theses

Multimedia computer architecture extensions for Hennessy and Patterson's DLX architecture are developed following the study of multimedia applications and existing multimedia architecture extensions. Support for the extensions is added to a VHDL superscalar DLX CPU model as well as a DLX assembler. Key functions used in digital video encoding and decoding are modified to use the extensions, and simulations are undertaken using the VHDL model to determine the speedup offered by the extensions for these functions. The results of the simulations are used to calculate the application speedup based on the function speedup and the fraction of the time that …

Phosphorylation Regulates The Assembly Of Numa In A Mammalian Mitotic Extract, Alejandro Saredi, Louisa Howard, Duane A. Compton Jun 1997

Phosphorylation Regulates The Assembly Of Numa In A Mammalian Mitotic Extract, Alejandro Saredi, Louisa Howard, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

NuMA is a 236 kDa nuclear protein that is required for the organization of the mitotic spindle. To determine how NuMA redistributes in the cell during mitosis, we have examined the behavior of NuMA in a mammalian mitotic extract under conditions conducive to the reassembly of interphase nuclei. NuMA is a soluble protein in mitotic extracts prepared from synchronized cultured cells, but forms insoluble structures when the extract becomes non-mitotic (as judged by the inactivation of cdc2/cyclin B kinase and the disappearance of mpm-2-reactive antigens). These NuMA-containing structures are irregularly shaped particles of 1–2 microm in diameter and their assembly …

An Investigation Of The Oxygraphic Response Of Stressed Bovine Blood, Cristin Mckenna May 1997

An Investigation Of The Oxygraphic Response Of Stressed Bovine Blood, Cristin Mckenna

Dissertations

Oxygraphic profiles of stressed bovine blood in a temperature controlled 2 ml reactor vessel provide the basis for an investigation of blood's response to various conditions. This response is broken down into an initial response (within 3 seconds), the response over 1 hour and the response over 24 hours. Fast-assay runs which investigate the initial response display a dose-response relationship when chemically stressed by phenol. Phenol concentrations in the 1,000 ppm range indicate a decrease in dissolved oxygen (DO) and higher phenol concentrations of over 20,000 an increase in DO. In addition to phenol concentration, other factors investigated with respect …

Hydrocatalysis: A New Energy Paradigm For The 21st Century, Peter Mark Jansson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will review the problems of worldwide energy supply, describe the current technologies that meet the energy needs of our industrial societies, summarize the environmental impacts of those fuels and technologies and their increased use by a growing global and increasingly technical economy. This work will also describe and advance the technology being developed by BlackLight Power, Inc. [BLP], a scientific company located in Malvern, Pennsylvania. BLP's technology purports to offer commercially viable and useful heat generation via a previously unrecognized natural phenomenon - the catalytic reduction of the hydrogen atom to a lower energy state. A review of …
