United States Patent, Number: 5,633,447: Plant Tissue Comprising A Subgenomic Promoter, Paul G. Ahlquist, Roy C. French
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A subgenomic promoter of a positive strand RNA virus is disclosed which directs the amplified expression of a structural gene in plant tissue. The core region and an upstream activating domain of the subgenomic promoter are identified. This promoter can be utilized in a modified virus. or in an appropriate engineered recombinant DNA derivative which may be chromosomally integrated or maintained as an episome in transformed cells.

Nepsilon-(Carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) is a stable chemical modification of proteins formed from both carbohydrates and lipids during autoxidation reactions. We hypothesized that carboxymethyl lipids such as (carboxymethyl)phosphatidylethanolamine (carboxymethyl-PE) would also be formed in these reactions, and we therefore developed a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry assay for quantification of carboxymethylethanolamine (CME) following hydrolysis of phospholipids. In vitro, CME was formed during glycation of dioleoyl-PE under air and from linoleoylpalmitoyl-PE, but not from dioleoyl-PE, in the absence of glucose. In vivo, CME was detected in lipid extracts of red blood cell membranes, approximately 0.14 mmol of CME/mol of ethanolamine, from control and diabetic subjects, …

DCE is a clear synthetic liquid. Its most common use today is to make vinyl chloride and several substances that dissolve grease, glue, and dirt. The purpose ofthis study was to investigate the effects of DCE on the central nervous system by measuring GFAP and GSH brain levels and SMA. Brain regions studied were CTX, BS, CRE and HP. 49-day male Sprague-Dawley rats were given a single dose of DCE and sacrificed 7 and 14 days later to measure GFAP levels. Dose groups for the 7 -day study were Sml/kg saline and O. 7mllkg DCE. Dose groups for the 14-day …
Estimation Of Abundance And Mortality Of Emigrating Chum Salmon And Chinook Salmon In The Chena River, Alaska, Brent David Peterson
Estimation Of Abundance And Mortality Of Emigrating Chum Salmon And Chinook Salmon In The Chena River, Alaska, Brent David Peterson
Fisheries
During May-June, 1995 and 1996, the outmigration of juvenile chum salmon (Oncorkynchus keta) and chinook salmon (O. tschazvytscha) was sampled with floating traps in the area of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project, Chena River, Alaska. Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) was higher at night than day for chinook juveniles, but not for chum juveniles. CPUE of both species decreased as the season progressed, but usually increased during higher-discharge events. CPUE is standardized by time; discharge was monitored as a covariate but was not included in CPUE calculations. The Jolly-Seber family of models was used on recapture data of fin-dipped fish to …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Undergraduate research with faculty continues to grow and becomes an increasingly significant part of active learning at Central W asbington University. The symposium is intended to provide a unique opportunity for students to present their research and to generate a common ground for interdepartmental and inter-disciplinary communication. The papers presented at the Undergraduate Research Symposium-97 represent only a fraction of the students actively participating in research at Central.

Physics & Astronomy
Energetic neutral atoms are created when energetic magnetospheric ions undergo charge exchange with cold neutral atoms in the Earth's tenuous extended atmosphere (the geocorona). Since they are unaffected by the Earth's magnetic field, these energetic neutrals travel away in straight line trajectories from the points of charge exchange. The remote detection of these particles provides a powerful means through which the global distribution and properties of the geocorona and ring current can be inferred. Due to its 2 × 9 RE polar orbit, the Polar spacecraft provides an excellent platform from which to observe ENAs because it spends much of …
