Head Direction Cells And Episodic Spatial Information In Rats Without A Hippocampus, Edward J. Golob, Jeffrey S. Taube Jul 1997

Head Direction Cells And Episodic Spatial Information In Rats Without A Hippocampus, Edward J. Golob, Jeffrey S. Taube

Dartmouth Scholarship

To successfully navigate through the environment animals rely on information concerning their directional heading and location. Many cells within the postsubiculum and anterior thalamus discharge as a function of the animal’s head direction (HD), while many cells in the hippocampus discharge in relation to the animal’s location. We placed lesions in the hippocampus and recorded from HD cells in the postsubiculum and anterior thalamus. Lesions of the hippocampus did not disrupt the HD cell signal in either brain area, indicating that the HD cell signal must be generated by structures external to the hippocampus. In addition, each cell’s preferred firing …

Empowerment In Student Teaching Through Community Service Learning, Rahima C. Wade Jul 1997

Empowerment In Student Teaching Through Community Service Learning, Rahima C. Wade

Higher Education

The student teaching experience is probably the most influential phase of preservice teachers' development within a teacher education program (Burstein, 1992; Griffin, 1989). In particular, the relationship between the cooperating teacher and student teacher plays a critical role in student teachers' success. Preservice teachers are generally instructed to "do as I do" by their cooperating teachers. Thus, student teachers often find little opportunity to try out strategies they have learned in their university methods courses unless the practices are already in place in cooperating teachers' classrooms. In addition, few researchers have attempted to discern how to enhance preservice teachers' abilities …

Antisense Expression Of The Peptide Transport Gene Atptr2-B Delays Flowering And Arrests Seed Development In Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants, Wei Song, Serry Koh, Mihály Czakó, László Márton, Eliana Drenkard, Jeffrey M. Becker, Gary Stacey Jul 1997

Antisense Expression Of The Peptide Transport Gene Atptr2-B Delays Flowering And Arrests Seed Development In Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants, Wei Song, Serry Koh, Mihály Czakó, László Márton, Eliana Drenkard, Jeffrey M. Becker, Gary Stacey

Faculty Publications

Previously, we identified a peptide transport gene, AtPTRZ-B, from Arabidopsis thaliana that was constitutively expressed in all plant organs, suggesting an important physiological role in plant growth and development. To evaluate the function of this transporter, transgenic Arabidopsis plants were constructed expressing antisense or sense AtPTRZ-B. Genomic Southern analysis indicated that four independent antisense and three independent sense AtPTRZ-B transgenic lines were obtained, which was confirmed by analysis of the segregation of the kanamycin resistance gene carried on the T-DNA. RNA blot data showed that the endogenous AtPJRZ-B mRNA levels were significantly reduced in transgenic leaves and …

South Dakota Farmland Market Trends: 1991-1997, Larry Janssen, Burton Pflueger

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Agricultural land values and cash rental rates in South Dakota, by region and by state, are the primary topics of this report, which is written for farmers and ranchers, landowners, agricultural professionals (lenders, rural appraisers, professional farm managers, Extension agents, and educators), and policy makers interested in agricultural land market trends. This report contains the results of the 1997 SDSU South Dakota Farm Real Estate Market Survey, the seventh annual SDSU survey developed to estimate agricultural land values and cash rental rates by land use in different regions of South Dakota.

Second Biennial Watershed Management Workshop For The James, Vermillion, And Big Sioux Rivers, C. L. Milewski, C. R. Berry, J. Gilbertson Jul 1997

Second Biennial Watershed Management Workshop For The James, Vermillion, And Big Sioux Rivers, C. L. Milewski, C. R. Berry, J. Gilbertson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Watershed management means managing the South Dakota landscape. Many stakeholders are responsible for the landscape; therefore, cooperation, communication, knowledge, and a good sprinkling of wisdom must bring the various issues together for comprehensive watershed management.
This watershed management workshop was a continuation of the first workshop held in Huron, S.D. in February of 1995. As with the first, the goals were to bring people together to discuss principles related to earth processes, natural resources, agronomy, range science, fish and wildlife, and human uses. A third of the workshop was devoted to learning about the diverse programs, projects, people, and funding …

Nebraska's Flying Mammals, Patricia W. Freeman, Kenneth N. Geluso, J. Scott Altenbach Jul 1997

Nebraska's Flying Mammals, Patricia W. Freeman, Kenneth N. Geluso, J. Scott Altenbach

Biology Faculty Publications

They flit around at dusk in crazy patterns. They fly around street lights and dive at rocks thrown in the air. They have high-pitched squeaks and turn up in unexpected places. They have strange, little faces and bizarre ears. They have soft fur and a thin rubbery membrane across their long fingers. They are bats, Nebraska's only flying mammals.

Bats are mysterious. Is it because they come out at night and we come out in the daytime? Maybe it is because we associate flying with birds, not mammals. Bats are dark and foreboding, not brightly colored. At first, these mysterious …

How Can The Poor Save? Theory And Evidence On Saving In Low-Income Households, Sondra Beverly Jul 1997

How Can The Poor Save? Theory And Evidence On Saving In Low-Income Households, Sondra Beverly

Center for Social Development Research

There is an emerging policy and academic discussion, supported by a growing body of empirical evidence, regarding the potentially positive effects of asset accumulation in lowincome households. However, at least two questions precede this discussion: Can the poor save? And, if so, how can programs and policies promote saving by the poor? This paper begins to address these questions through an interdisciplinary review of theory and empirical evidence on saving. The first section summarizes existing theories of saving and asset accumulation. In the second section, a general model of saving is presented. This model emphasizes contextual influences as well as …

Appellate Practice And Procedure, Lawrence A. Slovensky Jul 1997

Appellate Practice And Procedure, Lawrence A. Slovensky

Mercer Law Review

The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit decided several cases during 1996 which represented significant additions or modifications to the law governing appellate practice and procedure in this circuit. For example, the court attempted to clarify the circumstances in which interlocutory collateral orders involving the qualified immunity defense can be appealed, announced a new definition for "excusable neglect" in determining whether an untimely notice of appeal can be allowed, and analyzed the use of the harmless error rule in instructional omission cases. This Article will survey developments in appellate practice and procedure in the Court of Appeals …

Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Deborah R. Jordan Jul 1997

Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Deborah R. Jordan

Mercer Law Review

The rule of law governing sentencing in the federal courts is becoming more and more of an intellectual exercise; one that may be interesting to the academics, but is confusing and frustrating to the individuals affected by the process. A review of the decisions issued in 1996 by the Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, as well as those of the United States Supreme Court, confirms this trend to intellectualize the sentencing process.

Most people who are confronted by the criminal justice system have strong emotions attached to the experience. Crime victims have suffered unjustly and want to see …

Testing Testing, Carl E. Schneider Jul 1997

Testing Testing, Carl E. Schneider

Articles

Last year, Congress passed the Ryan White Care Act Amendments of 1996. The amendments authorize ten million dollars for each fiscal year from 1996 through 2000 for counseling pregnant women on HIV disease, for "outreach efforts to pregnant women at high risk of HN who are not currently receiving prenatal care," and for voluntary testing for pregnant women. The amendments compromise a central question: whether prenatal and neonatal AIDS testing should be compelled. The compromise is complex. The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is instructed to establish a system for states to use to discover and …

Grandmothers Laughing: Intergenerational Transmission Of Cultural Beliefs About Pregnancy And Childbirth Among Native American Women, Claudia Robin Long Jul 1997

Grandmothers Laughing: Intergenerational Transmission Of Cultural Beliefs About Pregnancy And Childbirth Among Native American Women, Claudia Robin Long

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation reports findings from a qualitative study of intergenerational transmission of pregnancy and childbirth information among Native American women. Proposed is a theory of intergenerational transmission that explains four pathways used by Indian women to gain information about pregnancy and childbirth. Antecedent, consequent, and core elements are associated with the transmission process.

Discriminant sampling was used to identify the middle generation of Indian mothers and grandmothers, between 36 and 65 years of age, residing on or near the reservation, with experience of assimilation policies that had moved off-reservation temporarily. The researcher used the grounded theory method to analyze responses …
