Environmental Regulation Of Russia's Offshsore Oil & Gas Industry And Its Implications For The International Petroleum Market, Deborah K. Espinosa Jul 1997

Environmental Regulation Of Russia's Offshsore Oil & Gas Industry And Its Implications For The International Petroleum Market, Deborah K. Espinosa

Washington International Law Journal

Due to Northeast Asia's increasing energy demand, the Russian Far East's immense oil and gas reserves, and the close physical proximity between the two regions, international petroleum companies are exploring Russia's offshore petroleum reserves in the Far East. The Russian offshore industry, however, presents foreign investors with many legal uncertainties including exposure to environmental liabilities. This Comment suggests that Russia's environmental regulatory system, which includes a constitutional right to a healthy environment, presents international petroleum companies with a new set of circumstances to which they must adapt if Russian reserves are to satisfy Northeast Asia's rising energy needs. To do …

Mapping The Marias The Interface Of Native And Scientific Cartographies, Barbara Belyea Jul 1997

Mapping The Marias The Interface Of Native And Scientific Cartographies, Barbara Belyea

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In early June 1805, as they traveled up the Missouri toward the continental divide, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark came to a fork where two rivers of apparently comparable width and force flowed together. The captains paused at this junction, unable to decide which river was the "main stream" of the Missouri and which was the tributary. They were determined to fulfill Thomas Jefferson's instructions as exactly as possible: "to explore the Missouri river, & such principal stream of it, as, by it's course and communication with the waters of the Pacific ocean ... may offer the most direct & …

Review Of Black Elk And Flaming Rainbow; Personal Memories Of The Lakota Holy Man And John Neihardt, Julian Rice Jul 1997

Review Of Black Elk And Flaming Rainbow; Personal Memories Of The Lakota Holy Man And John Neihardt, Julian Rice

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1931 fourteen year-old Hilda Neihardt accompanied her father and her sister Enid to the Pine Ridge Reservation for the interviews that became Black Elk Speaks. Now, sixty-four years later, she provides a "human-interest narrative" of previously unpublished anecdotes from that historically significant visit, as well as pointed revelations intended to correct "serious misunderstandings" of several unnamed but identifiable interpreters.

Some of the descriptions accurately reflect racial attitudes and stereotypes of 1931. One of the elderly witnesses to Black Elk's narrative, Chase-in-the-Morning, "was slim, hardened, and strongly built .... His aquiline face, twinkling eyes, and long hair completed for …

The Sacred Black Hills An Ethnohistorical Review, Linea Sundstrom Jul 1997

The Sacred Black Hills An Ethnohistorical Review, Linea Sundstrom

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Black Hills area is widely recognized as sacred in the context of traditional Lakota and Cheyenne belief systems. Questions arise, however, regarding the authenticity and historical depth of these beliefs.1 Some researchers assert that the concept of the sacred Black Hills is little more than a twentieth century scheme to promote tourism or part of a legal strategy to gain the return of Black Hills lands to Lakota and Cheyenne tribal governments.2 While many Lakotas and Cheyennes today express a strong spiritual link to the Black Hills,3 some historians have questioned whether today's beliefs about the …

Environmental Law, W. Scott Laseter, Julie V. Mayfield

Mercer Law Review

This Article marks the fourth survey of environmental law in the Eleventh Circuit. In terms of environmental issues, the most recent period was an active one for the Eleventh Circuit and its associated district courts during which the appellate court handed down its first Endangered Species Act decisions; issued a sweeping decision under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act; and heard several other cases raising important environmental questions. Additionally, the survey period saw a federal district judge from Alabama strike a blow against Superfund's vaunted armor

The Analysis Of A Late Holocene Bison Skull From Fawn Creek, Lemhi County, Idaho, And Its Implications For Understanding The History And Ecology Of Bison In The Intermountain West, Kenneth P. Cannon

United States National Park Service: Publications

Executive Summary

In 1995 the skull of a subadult male bison was recovered from the cutbank of Fawn Creek, Lemhi County, Idaho, by a ranger for the Salmon-Challis National Forest. After slowly drying the skull for about a year it was turned over to the Midwest Archeological Center in order to be stabilized and analyzed for clues to the ecology of Late Holocene bison in the Intermountain West.

A number of analytical techniques were applied to the skull in order to understand its age of deposition and ecology. Radiocarbon dating revealed a recent age of 170 ± 70 yr B.P., …
