Technology, Transactions Costs, And Investor Welfare: Is A Motley Fool Born Every Minute?, Lynn A. Stout Jul 1997

Technology, Transactions Costs, And Investor Welfare: Is A Motley Fool Born Every Minute?, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Computer network technology promises to revolutionize the secondary securities market and particularly to reduce dramatically the marginal costs associated with trading corporate equities. Lowering transactions costs usually is presumed to increase trader welfare. Certain unique characteristics of the secondary securities market suggest, however, that reducing the marginal costs associated with trading stocks may have the perverse and counterintuitive effect of decreasing investor welfare. Policymakers should consider this possibility as they respond to the market's rapid evolution.

The Role Of Religion In Public Life And Official Pressure To Participate In Alcoholics Anonymous, Paul E. Salamanca Jul 1997

The Role Of Religion In Public Life And Official Pressure To Participate In Alcoholics Anonymous, Paul E. Salamanca

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

If religion is an innate aspect of the human experience, it should not be surprising that Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), a widely known and arguably religious support group for problem drinkers, has become a common and effective means of combating alcoholism. Also, it should not be surprising that probation officers, parole officers, judges, bar overseers, wardens, and myriad others exercising state authority routinely push individuals toward A.A. Arguably, however, official referral of problem drinkers to A.A. violates current interpretations of the Establishment Clause because of the quasi-religious nature of the program.

Although separationism helps both church and state, our Constitution does, …

Seaman's Valley And Maroon Material Culture In Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah Jul 1997

Seaman's Valley And Maroon Material Culture In Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Seaman's Valley site was one of the few known places in Jamaica where the Maroons came into face to face combat with the colonial military in a battle that featured the largest force ever sent against the Maroons. In that encounter the colonial forces were routed in a total defeat resulting in the abandonment of arms and ammunition and personnel. This paper compares the material culture from the Seaman's Valley site and Nanny Town. This paper will then show the significance of the longstanding strategic relationship between the two locations during the Maroon struggle for freedom and even after peace …

Enhancing The Middle School Curriculum Through Service Learning, Ron Schukar Jul 1997

Enhancing The Middle School Curriculum Through Service Learning, Ron Schukar

Curriculum

On a warm April morning, 80 eighth-grade students from North Middle School in Aurora, Colorado, gathered in nearby Sand Creek Park to erect bat houses. "Why bat houses?" a local news reporter asked. "To control the insect population," one of the students answered. "We have reclaimed this park for all the plant and animal species that live here and for the people of our community who want to enjoy the surroundings," another student offered. "Because of the water and foliage, insects, especially mosquitoes, are a problem. We don't want the city to apply insecticides in the park, so we are …

Farmland Protection For Illinois: The Planning And Legal Issues, Lawrence W. Libby Jul 1997

Farmland Protection For Illinois: The Planning And Legal Issues, Lawrence W. Libby

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This address contends that agriculture, as a land intensive business, is critical to the Illinois economy and farmland protection belongs on the state's agenda as a policy objective as well as a significant goal of growth management. The author reasons that the adequacy of food supply and the necessity of farmland, as well as the non-owner services of farmland, require the inclusion of farmland protection on the state's planning agenda. Looking toward the future of farmland use and conversion, the author reviews the important planning and legal issues relative to farmland protection as a policy issue and suggests several strategies …

Roman Roads In The Upper Galilee And Lower Golan Regions: Relationships To Natural Migratory Routes, April L. Whitten Jul 1997

Roman Roads In The Upper Galilee And Lower Golan Regions: Relationships To Natural Migratory Routes, April L. Whitten

Student Work

The geoarchaeological problem herein was to identify the Roman roads in the Upper Galilee and Lower Golan regions of Israel. The primary objective was to identify an anthropogenic relationship of land use as a function of the physical geography of the region. The secondary objective was to identify the most favorable routes of passage to the ancient city of Bethsaida. This thesis pursued a multi-disciplinary approach to meeting the objectives. Field investigation was conducted to acquire data on the elevation, slope, aspect, lithology, and hydrology of the terrain regarding cost factor values of travel by foot. An archaeological investigation was …

Private Reason(S) And Public Spheres: Sexuality And Enlightenment In Kant, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Jul 1997

Private Reason(S) And Public Spheres: Sexuality And Enlightenment In Kant, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Pivoting on the essay on enlightenment as a central text and referring to other thematically relevant writings by Kant, this study qualifies the view that the Kantian concepts of enlightenment and the public sphere are represented solely in a neutral, disinterested manner as open and democratic forums for all men and women. By recovering unconscious inscriptions of gender, sexuality, and class in contradistinction to the dominant "democratic" reception of Kant, this essay shows how infrastructural sexual dynamics co-articulate the surface discourses of enlightenment, the public and private spheres, and the beautiful and the sublime. As non-cognitive structures, these discourses inscribe …
