Sabbatical Leave Proposal And Report, Charles R. Newman
Sabbatical Leave Proposal And Report, Charles R. Newman
Sabbaticals
The Dictionary defines "sabbatical Leave" as: "A leave of absence with pay, usually granted every seventh year, as to a college professor for travel, research, or rest." Just prior to, during, and just after my leave I traveled to Tampa, Florida; the Carolinas, and Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico for interviews, research, and reflection. I learned a great deal about multiculturalism, culturally diverse speakers, employer expectations for newly hired employees, and teaching methodologies for students that are non EuroAmerican males.
My sabbatical project was both professionally and personally satisfying, and I am very pleased with the results of the …

Magnetic Neutron-Scattering Investigation Of The Field-Induced Griffiths Phase In Fecl2, Christian Binek, D. Bertrand, L.P. Regnault, Wolfgang Kleemann
Christian Binek Publications
Quasielastic neutron scattering has been utilized to investigate the Griffiths phase induced by an axial magnetic field in FeCl2 at temperatures Tc(H)⩽T⩽TN, where Tc(H) is the transition temperature in an external magnetic field H. We present the temperature dependence of the integrated neutron-scattering intensity at fixed scattering vectors for various magnetic fields. On cooling below TN the antiferromagnetic short-range fluctuations decrease due to an increase of the volume fraction which is already antiferromagnetically ordered. A weighted average of the local contributions to the antiferromagnetic susceptibility quantitatively describes the scattering cross section.

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
So, a metal plate about the size of a placemat- the trim tab-enables course changes on a 200,000 ton bulk carrier traveling at 18 knots! As humane educators, we observe similarly disproportionate effects when, under certain conditions, the care of animals is integrated into the life of a classroom. Here, for example, is a comment from Vancouver teacher Alex Angelomatis, who regularly brings his elderly dog Seymour to school: "Just by being in the classroom, Seymour acts as a catalyst for participation. Shy kids get involved, listening improves, and the class gets along better. From the changes I've seen," he …

Directed Insertion Of A Selectable Marker Into A Circular Plasmid Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Patricia Rosa, D. Scott Samuels, Daniel Hogan, Brian Stevenson, Sherwood Casjens, Kit Tilly
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Studies of the biology of Borrelia burgdorferi and the pathogenesis of Lyme disease are severely limited by the current lack of genetic tools. As an initial step toward facile genetic manipulation of this pathogenic spirochete, we have investigated gene inactivation by allelic exchange using a mutated borrelial gyrB gene that confers resistance to the antibiotic coumermycin A(1) as a selectable marker. We have transformed B. burgdorferi by electroporation with a linear fragment of DNA in which this selectable marker was flanked by sequences from a native borrelial 26-kb circular plasmid. We have identified coumermycin A(1)-resistant transformants in which gyrB had …

Bargaining About Future Jeopardy, Daniel C. Richman
Bargaining About Future Jeopardy, Daniel C. Richman
Vanderbilt Law Review
The debate about how much protection criminal defendants should have against successive prosecutions has generally been conducted in the context of how to interpret the Double Jeopardy Clause. The doctrinal focus of this debate ignores the fact that for the huge majority of defendants-those who plead guilty instead of standing trial-the Double Jeopardy Clause sin- ply sets a default rule, establishing a minimum level of protection when defendants choose not to bargain about the possibility of future charges. In this Article, Professor Richman examines the world that exists in the shadow of minimalist double jeopardy doctrine, exploring the dynamics of …
