A Role For A Rab4-Like Gtpase In Endocytosis And In Regulation Of Contractile Vacuole Structure And Function In Dictyostelium Discoideum, John Bush, Lesly A. Temesvari, Juan Rodriguez-Paris, Greg Buczynski, James Cardelli Oct 1996

A Role For A Rab4-Like Gtpase In Endocytosis And In Regulation Of Contractile Vacuole Structure And Function In Dictyostelium Discoideum, John Bush, Lesly A. Temesvari, Juan Rodriguez-Paris, Greg Buczynski, James Cardelli

Publications

The small Mr Rab4-like GTPase, RabD, localizes to the endosomal pathway and the contractile vacuole membrane system in Dictyostelium discoideum. Stably transformed cell lines overexpressing a dominant negative functioning RabD internalized fluid phase marker at 50% of the rate of wild-type cells. Mutant cells were also slower at recycling internalized fluid. Microscopic and biochemical approaches indicated that the transport of fluid to large postlysosome vacuoles was delayed in mutant cells, resulting in an accumulation in acidic smaller vesicles, probably lysosomes. Also, RabD N121I-expressing cell lines missorted a small but significant percentage of newly synthesized lysosomal alpha-mannosidase precursor polypeptides. However, the …

Art’S Haunted House: Dickinson’S Sense Of Self, Paul Crumbley Oct 1996

Art’S Haunted House: Dickinson’S Sense Of Self, Paul Crumbley

English Faculty Publications

Writing to Dickinson in 1869, the year before he met the poet in Amherst, Thomas Wentworth Higginson describes the discomfort that Dickinson's haunting presence could inflict on a man fully at home in domesticated art: "Sometimes I take out your letters & verses, dear friend, and when I feel their strange power, it is not strange that I find it hard to write . . ." (L461, #330a). Dickinson's writing, Higginson continues, provides him no clear target for his words: "I should like to hear from you very often, but feel always timid lest what I write should be badly …

An Optimization Model For Planning Natural Gas Purchases, Transportation, Storage And Deliverability, Anthony E. Bopp, Vijay R. Kannan, Susan W. Palocsay, Scott P. Stevens Oct 1996

An Optimization Model For Planning Natural Gas Purchases, Transportation, Storage And Deliverability, Anthony E. Bopp, Vijay R. Kannan, Susan W. Palocsay, Scott P. Stevens

Management Faculty Publications

Natural gas local distribution companies (LDCs) face the problem of managing natural gas purchases under conditions of uncertain demand and frequent price change. In this paper, we present a stochastic optimization model to solve this problem. Unlike other models, this model explicitly considers deliverability, the rate at which gas can be added to and withdrawn from a storage facility, as a variable, and considers its role in ensuring a secure supply of gas. Deliverability is often overlooked in gas supply planning, yet is a critical factor in achieving a secure gas supply. Using data from an LDC in Huntsville, Alabama, …

Personal Choice, Peter Truman And Kathy Cassidy Oct 1996

Personal Choice, Peter Truman And Kathy Cassidy

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

For many of us using group-building activities, the solution to maintaining the integrity of participants lies in supporting their decisions as individuals. "Challenge by Choice" is commonly used in programs that combine individual risk-taking with group-building activities such as rock climbing. The challenge by choice philosophy states that if a participant feels threatened or unsafe with a situation, they reserve the right to step out. However, in order for challenge by choice to be effective, it must be used in conjunction with an environment that suppons an individual's ability to make their own decisions. The pressure felt by an adolescent …

"Who Are You To Say What My Best Interest Is?" Minor's Due Process Rights When Admitted By Parents For Inpatient Mental Health Treatment, Kelli Schmidt Oct 1996

"Who Are You To Say What My Best Interest Is?" Minor's Due Process Rights When Admitted By Parents For Inpatient Mental Health Treatment, Kelli Schmidt

Washington Law Review

In State ex rel. T.B. v. CPC Fairfax Hospital, the Washington Supreme Court determined that minors who refuse to consent to inpatient mental health treatment, but are admitted by their parents nonetheless, have a statutory right to a prompt judicial review of the admission decision. This Comment argues that confining mature minors in mental hospitals against their will is a deprivation of both liberty and privacy interests and, as such, stringent due process protections are required, not only by Washington's current statutory scheme, but also by the U.S. and Washington Constitutions. It concludes by stating that the current statutory …

From A To Z: Using Alphabet Books As An Instructional Tool With Older Readers, Gerry A. Coffman, Judy Jackson Spohn Oct 1996

From A To Z: Using Alphabet Books As An Instructional Tool With Older Readers, Gerry A. Coffman, Judy Jackson Spohn

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Alphabet books provide a literature source for teachers to use in the classroom that focuses on a common sequence of textual organization which upper elementary and middle school students have known since they were young children. These students most likely had in their repertoire of beginning to read activities, alphabet books using common symbols to match the letters such as "A is for apple, B is for bear, C is for cat." The objects were selected to match the true sound of the letter with a single or small number of illustrations to demonstrate the concept. The alphabet book addresses …

Listening And Literacy: Audiobooks In The Reading Program, Renee Michelet Casbergue, Karen Harris Oct 1996

Listening And Literacy: Audiobooks In The Reading Program, Renee Michelet Casbergue, Karen Harris

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Perhaps in response to heightened awareness of the pleasure people of all ages take in listening to good literature read aloud, publishers of both children's and adult literature have begun to produce audio versions of their most popular titles. The new availability of a broad range of literature in audiobook form is in sharp contrast to an earlier focus on audio tapes accompanying simple picture books for beginning readers. Audio versions of treasured classics and contemporary young adult fiction by such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien and Ursula LeGuin are now readily available.

Self-Questioning — An Aid To Metacognition, Ruth Ann Williamson Oct 1996

Self-Questioning — An Aid To Metacognition, Ruth Ann Williamson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The attempt of this article is to present the distinction between teacher questioning that characterizes students' textual understanding (product) and questioning that actively engages students in the meaning-making process (process). It is the author's contention that there must be a proper balance between product and process questions in classrooms that support students in their efforts to learn from text as they actively interact with text, the teacher, and each other. Said differently, our aim as educators should be to teach students to think. One method we can use is effective questioning, which piques interest, curiosity, and involvement, and ultimately leads …
