Public Sector Unions And Public Spending, Michael L. Marlow, William Orzechowski Oct 1996

Public Sector Unions And Public Spending, Michael L. Marlow, William Orzechowski

Economics

This study examines the influence of public sector unions on the expansion of the public sector. Based on public goods theory, our paper models how unions influence the supply of and demand for public sector activities. On the demand side, public sector unions are special interests which advocate public sector expansion to policy makers; on the supply side, they exert pressure to maintain and expand monopoly powers. Empirical evidence supports the hypothesis that a positive relationship exists between public sector unionism and public spending.

Azorhizobium Caulinodans Uses Both Cytochrome Bd (Quinol) And Cytochrome Cbb3 (Cytochrome C) Terminal Oxidases For Symbiotic N2 Fixation, Alexandre Kaminski, Christopher L. Kitts, Zachary Zimmerman, Robert A. Ludwig Oct 1996

Azorhizobium Caulinodans Uses Both Cytochrome Bd (Quinol) And Cytochrome Cbb3 (Cytochrome C) Terminal Oxidases For Symbiotic N2 Fixation, Alexandre Kaminski, Christopher L. Kitts, Zachary Zimmerman, Robert A. Ludwig

Biological Sciences

Azorhizobium caulinodans employs both cytochrome bd (cytbd; quinol oxidase) and cytcbb3 (cytc oxidase) as terminal oxidases in environments with very low O2 concentrations. To investigate physiological roles of these two terminal oxidases both in microaerobic culture and in symbiosis, knockout mutants were constructed. As evidenced by visible absorbance spectra taken from mutant bacteria carrying perfect gene replacements, both the cytbd- and cytcbb3- mutations were null alleles. In aerobic culture under 2% O2 atmosphere, Azorhizobium cytbd- and cytcbb3- single mutants both fixed N2 at 70 to 90% of wild-type rates; in root nodule symbiosis, both single mutants fixed N2 at 50% …

Fisheries Research Report No 107 - Chemical Composition Of Yabbies (Cherax Albidus Clark 1936) From Western Australian Farm Dams, Kevin A. Francesconi, Noel M. Morrissy Oct 1996

Fisheries Research Report No 107 - Chemical Composition Of Yabbies (Cherax Albidus Clark 1936) From Western Australian Farm Dams, Kevin A. Francesconi, Noel M. Morrissy

Fisheries Research Reports

Proximate analyses, amino acid and fatty acid profiles, mineral composition and heavy metal and pesticide residues have been determined for tail muscle from Cherax albidus Clark 1936 (the yabby), sampled from Western Australian farm dams. The proximate analysis values for water, protein, ash, carbohydrate and energy content and the amino acid and fatty acid profiles of yabby tail muscle were similar to those reported for other decapods. Fat levels were low and, hence, cholesterol was very low in tail meat. Organochlorine pesticides were undetectable and heavy metal residues were well below maximum permitted concentrations for human consumption.

Untying A Judicial Knot: Examining The Constitutional Infirmities Of Extrajudicial Service And Executive Review In U.S. Extradition Procedure, Matthew M. Curley

Vanderbilt Law Review

Consider the following situation. An investment banker embezzles millions of dollars from a bank in Italy and transfers the funds to an account in the United States. While he is vacationing in the United States, federal marshals apprehend him pursuant to a request by the Italian government. They bring him before a federal district court judge sitting as an extradition magistrate in the local federal courthouse. After determining that the evidence presented meets the requisite level of criminality, the judge declares that the banker is properly extraditable and binds the case over to the Secretary of State.

The President, however, …

Is The “Dominant Firm” Dominant? An Empirical Analysis Of At&T’S Market Power, Simran K. Kahai, David L. Kaserman, John W. Mayo Oct 1996

Is The “Dominant Firm” Dominant? An Empirical Analysis Of At&T’S Market Power, Simran K. Kahai, David L. Kaserman, John W. Mayo

Economics & Finance

In this article, we estimate the degree of market power held by AT&T in the interstate long-distance market in the postdivestiture period. Our approach makes use of the dominant firm/competitive fringe model to impose the structure needed both to obtain estimates of the relevant structural parameters and to translate these parameters into an estimate of AT&T's residual demand elasticity and associated Lerner index. Because of the continued presence of regulation and other considerations, however, a direct estimation of the residual demand elasticity is not feasible. Consequently, we take a more indirect approach that combines estimation of the elasticity of fringe …
