Mechanical Properties Of Vitrified Soils, Christopher Y. Tuan, William C. Dass Nov 1996

Mechanical Properties Of Vitrified Soils, Christopher Y. Tuan, William C. Dass

Civil Engineering Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Recent advances in plasma arc technology have found many civil engineering applications, including in-situ soil vitrification (ISV). The ISV process transforms soils into homogeneous glass-like materials, which possess high compressive and tensile strengths (typically about 10 times those of unreinforced concrete), high leaching resistance, and are unaffected by wet-dry or freeze-thaw cycles. These vitrified earthen materials usually weigh about 2300 to 2500 kg per cubic meter. Potential ISV applications include slope stabilization, groundwater removal, subgrade stabilization, and simulated construction materials.

A 100-kW non-transferred plasma arc torch developed by the Plasma Energy Corporation was used for soil vitrification experiments with operating …

Nmr Studies Of Acyl Chain-Protein Interactions, Mark Christian Oswood Nov 1996

Nmr Studies Of Acyl Chain-Protein Interactions, Mark Christian Oswood

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

An approach employing heteronuclear NMR is presented for monitoring the interactions between long-chain fatty acids and proteins which are involved in their synthesis and intracellular transport. Two naturally occurring fatty acids, hexadecanoic (palmitic) and cis-9-10-methylene-hexadecanoic (MHA) acids were labeled using a biosynthetic scheme with 13C acetate as a source. The biosynthetic incorporation of 13C from a two carbon source resulted in sequential pairs of 13C atoms in the product. When combined with double quantum spectroscopy, a highly efficient suppression of natural abundance background resonances results. Proton-detected two and three-dimensional experiments which correlate double quantum carbon chemical shifts with proton shifts …

Distributed Activation Energy Model Of Heterogeneous Coal Ignition, John C. Chen Nov 1996

Distributed Activation Energy Model Of Heterogeneous Coal Ignition, John C. Chen

Mechanical Engineering

We present a model that simulates the conventional tube-furnace experiment used for ignition studies. The Distributed Activation Energy Model of Ignition accounts for particle-to-particle variations in reactivity by having a single preexponential factor and a Gaussian distribution of activation energies among the particles. The results show that the model captures the key experimental observations, namely, the linear increase in ignition frequency with increasing gas temperature and the variation of the slope of the ignition frequency with oxygen concentration. The article also shows that adjustments to the model parameters permit a good fit with experimental data.

Spanish For Health Care Professionals: Language And Culture, Mytzi Maryanne Rudolph Nov 1996

Spanish For Health Care Professionals: Language And Culture, Mytzi Maryanne Rudolph

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this investigation is to examine formal and informal resources available for teaching Spanish to health care professionals mainly in the Portland, Oregon area. Seventeen different Spanish-for-health-care-professionals texts are commented on by the author, some of which are the texts used in medical Spanish language classes. The majority of the texts contain little if any instruction on cultural aspects which affect the Latino patient population's health care behaviors and decision making. With the recent growth in the Latino population there is a greater demand for health care services by Spanish-speaking persons of the Latino community. The author discusses …

Galley: A New Parallel File System For Parallel Applications, Nils Nieuwejaar Nov 1996

Galley: A New Parallel File System For Parallel Applications, Nils Nieuwejaar

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Most current multiprocessor file systems are designed to use multiple disks in parallel, using the high aggregate bandwidth to meet the growing I/O requirements of parallel scientific applications. Most multiprocessor file systems provide applications with a conventional Unix-like interface, allowing the application to access those multiple disks transparently. This interface conceals the parallelism within the file system, increasing the ease of programmability, but making it difficult or impossible for sophisticated application and library programmers to use knowledge about their I/O to exploit that parallelism. In addition to providing an insufficient interface, most current multiprocessor file systems are optimized for a …

Life Without Lemon: The Status Of Establishment Clause Jurisprudence After Rosenberger V. Rector & Visitors Of The University Of Virginia, Julie Madison Angus Nov 1996

Life Without Lemon: The Status Of Establishment Clause Jurisprudence After Rosenberger V. Rector & Visitors Of The University Of Virginia, Julie Madison Angus

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This casenote analyzes Rosenberger v. Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia and determines that the Court misapplied Establishment Clause precedent and erroneously rejected the three-prong Lemon test. In examining the decision, the note provides a brief historical overview of the development of the numerous tests surrounding the Establishment Clause, focusing primarily on the past fifty years. The note concludes that in failing to mention the Lemon test, Rosenberger merely adds more confusion to the already bewildering area of Establishment Clause jurisprudence.

Cellular Basis Of Decreased Immune Responses To Pneumococcal Vaccines In Aged Mice, Manju Garg, Wei Luo, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada Nov 1996

Cellular Basis Of Decreased Immune Responses To Pneumococcal Vaccines In Aged Mice, Manju Garg, Wei Luo, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Previously, model systems were developed in our laboratory to study murine immune responses to the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine Pnu-Imune, both in vivo and in vitro (M. Garg and B. Subbarao, Infect. Immun. 60:2329-2336, 1992; M. Garg, A. M. Kaplan, and S. Bondada, J. Immunol. 152: 1589-1596, 1994). Using these systems, we found that aged mice did not respond to the vaccine in vivo or in vitro. Cell separation studies showed that the unresponsiveness of the aged spleen cells to the vaccine was not due to an intrinsic B-cell defect or to T-cell-mediated immunosuppression but resulted from an accessory cell …
