A Study To Determine Optimum Carton Head Space And Carton Orientation In A Corrugated Case To Minimize Product Damage Through Distribution, Kim Mitchell Jan 1996

A Study To Determine Optimum Carton Head Space And Carton Orientation In A Corrugated Case To Minimize Product Damage Through Distribution, Kim Mitchell

Theses

Pasta products are separated into four product categories: long goods, short goods, noodles and specialty items. Margins and subsequent corporate profits vary with each category. Long and short goods are commodity items. Therefore, they have low margins. Noodle item margins are slightly higher. However, pasta's highest margins are derived from the sale of speciality items. These items include Stuffing Shells, Lasagna and Manicotti. Because corporate profits are affected by the sales mix ratio of speciality items to other pasta categories, pasta companies strive to increase their market share of speciality items. Audits to determine stuffing shell quality in packages found …

Is One Parent Rating Scale Enough: A Comparison Of Three Adhd Parent Rating Scales, Nicole Lesiak Jan 1996

Is One Parent Rating Scale Enough: A Comparison Of Three Adhd Parent Rating Scales, Nicole Lesiak

Theses

This study examined the accuracy of three parent rating scales in identifying Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children who had been diagnosed previously with this disorder. If the assumption is made that all previous diagnoses were accurate, then all diagnoses on all scales should be positive. The rating scales selected were The Attention Deficit Disorders Evaluation Scales Second Edition - Home Version (ADDES) (1995), Conners' Abbreviated Symptom Questionnaire, Parent Version (ASQ-P) (1990), and the Revised Home Situations Questionnaire (HSQ-R) (1990). Subjects consisted of parents of fifty elementary age children. Results indicated that none of the three scales correctly indicated …

Modular Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (Misi) Calibration Using Blackbody Radiators, Emmett Ientilucci Jan 1996

Modular Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (Misi) Calibration Using Blackbody Radiators, Emmett Ientilucci

Theses

In Remote Sensing, absolute calibration of airborne image acquisition systems is essential. The MISI (Modular Imaging Spectrometer Instrument), developed at RIT’s Digital Imaging and Remote Sensin Laboratory (DIRS), is one such devise that needs this calibration. Without this calibration, visible and radiometric data collected by the MISI can be difficult to interpret. RIT has previously developed a line scanner but its means of calibration did not take into account the detector gain and bias of the system scanners, in general, that operate in the thermal regions of the EM spectrum use blackbody radiators for their means of calibration. The detectors …

Process Design For Charge-Injection Based Imaging Array Fabrication, Michael Schippers Jan 1996

Process Design For Charge-Injection Based Imaging Array Fabrication, Michael Schippers

Theses

Charge-injection devices (CID's) have been around almost as long as charge-coupled devices (CCD's), yet have generally been overlooked for solid state imaging applications due to their slower operating speeds. However, CID arrays offer advantages over CCD based arrays for certain applications where spectral response and/or X-Y addressing are required. In order to fabricate CID based imaging arrays, a single level poly CMOS (p-well) process has been modified into a double level poly CMOS (p-well) process that will allow fabrication of both imaging structures and drive circuitry. These modifications are optimized for CID based structures, yet will also allow working CCD …

Computational Analysis Of Turbopump Diffuser In A Space Transfer Vehicle Engine With Boundary Layer Control By Suction, Yuan Xin Jan 1996

Computational Analysis Of Turbopump Diffuser In A Space Transfer Vehicle Engine With Boundary Layer Control By Suction, Yuan Xin

Theses

Future space missions by NASA that include Space Transfer Vehicles (STV) are ex pected to perform orbital transfers such as Lunar and Mars transfers and descents. STV requires deep-engine throttling thrust capability. To accomplish this, turbopumps employed in the Space Transfer Vehicles should efficiently provide a wide range of flow output. The current state-of-the-art cryogenic fuel and oxidizer turbopump designs with vaned diffusers do not perform efficiently at off-design (low) flow rate, mainly due to flow separation and stall in the vaned diffuser. This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of boundary layer control by wall suction for suppressing or eliminating the …

3-D Cfd Analysis Of Flow In A Mixed-Flow Pump Diffuser, Yi Zhao Jan 1996

3-D Cfd Analysis Of Flow In A Mixed-Flow Pump Diffuser, Yi Zhao

Theses

The primary goal of the project was to gain insight into the flow pattern in a mixed flow pump diffuser by using FLUENT CFD code and k-e turbulence model, and improve the design of a diffuser for higher pump efficiency. The diffuser chosen in this thesis is used in a mixed flow multi-stage pump which collects the nearly radial flow (water) at impeller discharge and converts it to a nearly axial flow at the inlet of the following pump stage. A three-dimensional computational model was developed for three different diffuser designs labeled as Diffuser A, Diffuser B and Diffuser C. …

Modeling And Image Quality Of Photopolymer-Based Holographic Optical Elements, Guoheng Zhao Jan 1996

Modeling And Image Quality Of Photopolymer-Based Holographic Optical Elements, Guoheng Zhao

Theses

Hologram formation in photopolymers is believed to be largely a result of monomer diffusion. By solving the diffusion equation in terms of grating harmonics, the numerical results can be expressed in a meaningful way and are straightforward to compare with experimental results. The diffusion model predicts some basic properties of gratings recorded in photopolymers, such as the variation of refractive index modulation with recording irradiance or grating frequency, as well as the linearity of the recording. For a sinusoidal exposure irradiance, nonsinusoidal grating profiles are normally recorded. The linearity of recording depends strongly on the recording parameters including exposure irradiance …

Effect Of Inflow Pressure And Wall Heat Transfer On Shock-Induced Combustion/Detonation, B. S. Green, Harlan F. Nelson Jan 1996

Effect Of Inflow Pressure And Wall Heat Transfer On Shock-Induced Combustion/Detonation, B. S. Green, Harlan F. Nelson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oblique detonation waves are possible ignition mechanisms for scramjet engines. Results from a numerical study of the effects of changing the inflow pressure on oblique detonation wave structure for supersonic flow of a stoichiometric hydrogen-air mixture over a flat plate followed by a ramp are presented. Viscous effects and finite-rate chemistry are considered. Inflow pressure is varied from 0.1 to 1 atmosphere for Mach 4 inflow over a 30-degree ramp. Also, the effect of wall heat transfer rate is examined by comparing adiabatic wall, and constant temperature wall solutions. A separation bubble forms at the intersection of the flat plate …

Optimization For Maximum Performance High-Speed Engines, David W. Riggins Jan 1996

Optimization For Maximum Performance High-Speed Engines, David W. Riggins

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fuel-air combustion and the generation of irreversibility in high-speed flows are described in terms of the fundamental principles of nonequilibrium, work availability, and entropy increases. Engine thrust is analytically related to the overall engine irreversibility and the degree of combustion: Issues involving mixing enhancement assessment and engine optimization are then formalized and clarified. The concept of thrust-potential, as used in engine design and optimization, is shown to be a consistent application of the principles and findings of this and related investigations. This work was supported through NASA Grant NAG 1-1189. Special thanks are due to Charles McClinton at NASA Langley …

Hamiltonian Based Adaptive Critics For Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Jie Shen Jan 1996

Hamiltonian Based Adaptive Critics For Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Jie Shen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Hamiltonian based adaptive critic structure is proposed for solving missile guidance problems. This structure consists of a supervisor neural network called 'critic' and a controller network called 'action'. Together they are used to solve model-based guidance problems. The advantage of this approach is that: i) the training data for each network is created by the other network, ii) the converged solutions yield near optimal guidance over the entire span of the training range, and iii) they can be used as feedback controllers though trained off-line. A main contribution is that we establish a direct link between traditional optimal control …

Non-Axisymmetric Matrix Cracking And Interface Debonding With Friction In Ceramic Composites, F. S. Ji, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani Jan 1996

Non-Axisymmetric Matrix Cracking And Interface Debonding With Friction In Ceramic Composites, F. S. Ji, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An three-dimensional analytical model based on the principle of minimum potential energy is developed and applied to determine the stress state in a discrete fiber/matrix composite cylinder subjected to axial tensile loading in the fiber direction and containing a non-symmetric transverse matrix crack and an interface debond. The friction over the debonded interface is incorporated into the analysis. The strain energy release rates associated with the matrix crack and the interface debonding under the combination of the applied load and the interface frictional force are computed. The strain energy release rate criterion has been employed to evaluate the critical applied …

Global Characteristics And Structure Of Hydrogen-Air Counterflow Diffusion Flames, J. Zhao, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac, G. L. Pellett Jan 1996

Global Characteristics And Structure Of Hydrogen-Air Counterflow Diffusion Flames, J. Zhao, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac, G. L. Pellett

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A model based on similarity transformation, for the nitrogen-diluted, H2-air opposed-jet laminar counterflow diffusion flame (CFDF), was developed independently of earlier models, and numerically solved to study flame location and flame structure and extinction limits. Numerical stiffness is handled by a special treatment of the species production term. Flame location with respect to the stagnation plane is identified as an important parameter that governs H2-air diffusion flames, and physical explanations are given to show how flame location is affected by fuel dilution, strain rate, and Lewis number. Results show very good agreement with experimental extinction conditions. The effect of thermal …

Analysis Of A Single-Phase Induction Machine With A Shifted Auxiliary Winding, T. A. Walls, Scott D. Sudhoff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper extents the method of multiple reference frames to the analysis of asymmetrical induction motors with non-orthogonal stator windings, with particular emphasis on the permanent split capacitor (PSC) machine. The predictions of the method are verified by comparison to both experimental results and to results obtained using a machine variable computer simulation. Once verified, the method is used to derive the transfer function relating rotor speed to load torque disturbance, which is of particular interest when analyzing PSC machines driving compressor loads. It is shown that the transfer function exhibits a distinct resonant point, and that the magnitude of …

American Widowers With School-Age Children : An Exploratory Study Of Role Change And Role Conflict, Douglas Edward O'Neill Jan 1996

American Widowers With School-Age Children : An Exploratory Study Of Role Change And Role Conflict, Douglas Edward O'Neill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study assessed the effects that the death of a wife has on the roles of the widower when he becomes a single parent with school-age children. The literature review guided the study towards the areas of the family, roles of husband and wife, crises in families, specific crises which men become a single parent and men as single parents. An interactionist perspective was used with Znanieckis' Social Role theory to gain insight on the widowers processing of roles and social position. An exploratory survey of a sample population (N=46) of widowers with school-age children was used to gather data …

Story Retelling In A Social Studies Unit On Japan, Zetta M. Hart Jan 1996

Story Retelling In A Social Studies Unit On Japan, Zetta M. Hart

Graduate Research Papers

Retelling experiences (speaking, writing, dramatizing, and illustrating) were introduced to second grade children as a means of creating their own constructs. Such experiences can foster comprehension abilities and a sense of story, ownership of language experiences, and personal-social development. Folk tales served as the literature base for the retelling opportunities because they offer well-structured stories that present plots, motifs, and themes that are clearly delineated. These literature experiences and retelling activities were extended across the curriculum to enrich a social studies unit on Japan.

Perceptions Of Technology In Schools, Bobby Owens Jan 1996

Perceptions Of Technology In Schools, Bobby Owens

Graduate Research Papers

Since the middle 1900s, technology is becoming utilized more and more in the public schools (Olds, 1989). The electronic and computerized technology equipment, in the schools are changing very fast due in large part because of the computer compared to the 1970s electronic technology and the 1980s digital technology (Veen, 1991). Today, computers are faster, store more memory, contain graphics, video, and sound capabilities. Also modems are used for accessing the Internet and e-mail. Most technologies are becoming digital for better performance and output (Knapp & Glenn, 1996).
