A Literature-Based Thematic Unit For A Multi-Age Classroom, Diane C. Beard
A Literature-Based Thematic Unit For A Multi-Age Classroom, Diane C. Beard
Graduate Research Papers
The development of a literature-based integrated science unit for a multi-age classroom of 6- to 8-year-olds is based on a review of professional literature and a search of library materials for children. The integrated science unit on Iowa Owls and Bats allows children the opportunity to study animal life in their neighborhood, thus developing a better understanding of the real world around them. The print rich environment with a whole array of literature genres and developmentally appropriate expressive activities gives the children a secure and predictable environment in which to learn and grow socially, mentally, emotionally and physically. This integrated …
Home Visits: A Step Towards Educational Success, Mary K. Nelson
Home Visits: A Step Towards Educational Success, Mary K. Nelson
Graduate Research Papers
The major aim of the home visit study was to determine the value of a home visit for teachers, parents, and children. The study was conducted before the school year started with the kindergarten teachers making a home visit to 66 of the kindergarten students registered at Washington Elementary School. A prehome visit survey was used to determine what information parents needed, and if parents who have had children attend Washington School before have the same needs as parents new to the school. A post-home visit survey allowed parents to respond to open-ended questions about how they felt about the …
The Vital Element, Jennifer Mcnab
The Vital Element, Jennifer Mcnab
Graduate Research Papers
Integrating technology into curriculum requires educators to have a working knowledge of using technology in the educational setting. However, technology integration is often an oversight in staff development. Educators are more likely to use technology to their full potential if a support system is in place and proper training of how to use technology in their classroom is available.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how educators use computers to enhance the learning experience for students. Educators from around the United States answered the request for sharing motivational ideas for incorporating computers into the classroom. These innovative activities …
Multimedia In Education, Shouh-Chang Chen
Multimedia In Education, Shouh-Chang Chen
Graduate Research Papers
Multimedia has a role in education, because of its ability to present information in a format that interests the users. It can serve to complement traditional instruction. According to Luehrmann (1994), multimedia instructional software cannot totally replace the human teacher, because the purpose of education is not entirely academic. He further pointed out that schools not only provide the environment for learning, it also lets pupils interact and communicate with adults and peers. Multimedia can potentially offer learners the ability to access information in a appealing format without the direct presence of an instructor. This could reduce the cost of …
Integration Of Language Arts And Science Programs Through A Literature Base, Charlene E. Clark
Integration Of Language Arts And Science Programs Through A Literature Base, Charlene E. Clark
Graduate Research Papers
Based on professional reading on the values of an integrated curriculum and a literature-based approach to integrating the language arts and the science areas, a unit on energy--fossil fuel, solar, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear, and geothermal--was developed for grade five. By integrating the content and processes of science and the processes of the language arts, students' understanding of the science concepts and their thinking-language abilities could be extended. A literature base, represented by several genres, enriched the learning environment of this unit. The learning experiences were presented through centers, many of them literature-based, and teacher-directed sessions. The students' responses to the …
Developing Voice: Writing With At-Risk Adolescents, Paula K. Tapper Nicoll
Developing Voice: Writing With At-Risk Adolescents, Paula K. Tapper Nicoll
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this project was to examine current research on the writing process, to identify major aspects of an effective writing program, and then to design and implement a writing program for at-risk adolescents which encompasses these major aspects. It was found that the development of writing abilities involves the combination of personal style, cognitive development, involvement in the process, and writing instruction. A description of effective classroom instruction, which involves encouraging rather than pushing or pressuring students, is given. Voice, an important element in writing is explored and woven into the program. The writing aspects of topic selection, …
Choice Theory: A Review And Trial Use Of A Responsibility Model Of Discipline, Cynthia L. Parsons
Choice Theory: A Review And Trial Use Of A Responsibility Model Of Discipline, Cynthia L. Parsons
Graduate Research Papers
Student behavior and classroom discipline have been growing concerns for many years. This paper is a review of the literature relative to the Choice Theory model of classroom discipline and behavior as proposed by Glasser ( 1969, 1985, 1990) especially as compared to the traditional ways that schools have used to manage student behavior. (Choice Theory was known as Control Theory until 1996, when Glasser changed its name to better reflect its primary goal, which is to help children learn how to make better choices). The focus of this paper is a description of what Choice Theory is and how …
Technology Planning In K-12 Schools, Scott D. Seeger
Technology Planning In K-12 Schools, Scott D. Seeger
Graduate Research Papers
This review looks at the question, "What steps should be included in the technology planning process." Eight technology planning process models from state education departments, university education departments, and educational advisory agencies were reviewed and classified according to their process steps. Eight steps were identified in a majority of these plans as being necessary components to insure success in the technology planning process. Although not an actual step in the process, all the models reviewed stressed the need for technology to be integrated across the curriculum. Technology should not be taught in isolation, but rather should be taught as a …
Infusing A Small School District With Technology: A Case Study, Jerry Smith
Infusing A Small School District With Technology: A Case Study, Jerry Smith
Graduate Research Papers
In the last few years since the introduction of the personal computer, it has seemed to the staff and students in the Harris-Lake Park School District that computer technology in the schools in northwest Iowa has been increasing at a tremendous rate. Many school districts in the area seemed to be trying to purchase as much hardware and software as they could afford in order to maintain a progressive image with their community and the other districts. The Harris-Lake Park Technology Committee was formed not to justify the acquisition of technology, since there seemed to be an obvious need to …
The Role Of The Elementary Library Media Specialist As Instructional Consultant, Sharon Willey
The Role Of The Elementary Library Media Specialist As Instructional Consultant, Sharon Willey
Graduate Research Papers
This study investigated the issue of the perception of the elementary school library media specialist's role as instructional consultant. Elementary school library media specialists from two similar urban Iowa school districts with long standing support of school library media programs were surveyed. The survey attempted to determine if they perceived themselves as instructional consultants. It also asked if they believe that their principals and teachers perceive and support them as instructional consultants.
Data gathered from respondents indicated that the elementary library media specialists in the two selected Iowa school districts view themselves as instructional consultants. The respondents also indicated that …

School Library Media Centers Overdue Circulation Policies And Practices, Joyce Keeling
Graduate Research Papers
This descriptive study focused on overdue circulation policies and practices as found in Iowa elementary and secondary school library media centers. A questionnaire was sent to randomly selected Iowa school elementary and secondary library media specialists, with a seventy-seven percent response rate. Results showed that secondary library media specialists preferred collecting fees but elementary library media specialists were opposed. All school library media specialists used reminders, both written and oral; collected replacement fees for unreturned materials; and restricted borrowing privileges of patrons to encourage the return of materials.

The Legalization Of Physician-Assisted Suicide: Creating A Regulatory Potemkin Village, Daniel Callahan, Margot White
The Legalization Of Physician-Assisted Suicide: Creating A Regulatory Potemkin Village, Daniel Callahan, Margot White
University of Richmond Law Review
Over the past two decades, both professional and lay opinion have shown a markedly favorable shift toward the legalization of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS). Yet the translation of that support into legislation has come more slowly. Only in 1994, after the failure in some states to enact legislation and the defeat of ballot initiatives in California in 1991 and Washington in 1992, did an initiative finally succeed in Oregon. Although a court injunction has prevented it from taking effect, the fact of its passage marks an historical milestone. Among Western countries, euthanasia and PAS are legally available only in …

Kenneth Jenks was born a hemophiliac, inheriting the condi- tion from his mother. He contracted the HIV virus from a blood transfusion in 1980 and unknowingly passed the virus to his wife, Barbara Jenks. Mrs. Jenks was the first to suffer the effects of the illness. Her weight dropped by nearly forty pounds in three weeks due to constant debilitating nausea, and she was repeatedly hospitalized for two- to three-week stretches. Mrs. Jenks tried a half-dozen different oral medications for nausea to no avail, and could not function after shots for nausea left her in a stupor. Mr. Jenks experienced …
Daubert And The Quest For Value-Free "Scientific Knowledge" In The Courtroom, Alexander Morgan Capron
Daubert And The Quest For Value-Free "Scientific Knowledge" In The Courtroom, Alexander Morgan Capron
University of Richmond Law Review
In a world that grows more technologically complex every day and in which scientific research continually expands both our understanding of, and our questions about, the operation of the natural and man-made world, it is hardly surprising that science should show up with increasing frequency in our court-rooms. Science itself is sometimes at issue, for example, in proceedings on allegations of scientific misconduct or in disputes over the ownership or patentability of technologies. But more frequently, science enters in aid of resolving a case in which a complex question of causation is at issue. To establish or rebut causation, each …
Accommodating Spouses: Regulation B And Revised Article 3- The Suretyship Law Complication, Sarah Howard Jenkins
Accommodating Spouses: Regulation B And Revised Article 3- The Suretyship Law Complication, Sarah Howard Jenkins
University of Richmond Law Review
Congress enacted the Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974 to insure fairness and impartiality in the extension of credit. Congress found that economic stability and competition among financial institutions would be enhanced if credit decisions were made without discrimination on the basis of sex or marital status. The Act and its implementing regulation, Regulation B, were designed "to promote the availability of credit for all creditworthy applicants without regard to... marital status" and to prohibit practices that discriminate on that basis. Later, the scope of the Act was extended to include other classes of discrimination such as race, color, religion, …
Some Thoughts On Bifurcated Sentencing In Non-Capital Felony Cases In Virginia, Thomas D. Horne
Some Thoughts On Bifurcated Sentencing In Non-Capital Felony Cases In Virginia, Thomas D. Horne
University of Richmond Law Review
The punishment stage of a jury trial poses a difficult test for the conflicting attitudes and opinions of individual jurors. In the search for a mature, well-reasoned, and educated verdict, an understanding of the sentencing process by those controlling the flow of information is the best insurance against decisions which spring from passion, prejudice, and personal bias. Given recent legislative changes affecting sentencing in non-capital felony cases, such an understanding is not susceptible to hornbook solutions. This paper will attempt to put those changes in the context of existing sentencing practices and of related evidentiary issues. It is hoped that …
The Parental Tort Immunity Doctrine: Is It A Defensible Defense?, Sandra L. Haley
The Parental Tort Immunity Doctrine: Is It A Defensible Defense?, Sandra L. Haley
University of Richmond Law Review
If the overriding purpose of tort law is to compensate those injured by the wrongdoing of another, then intrafamily tort immunities have historically defeated that purpose. Their effect is to leave an uncompensated injured party with no remedy simply by virtue of the tortfeasor's familial relationship to the injured person. This survey focuses on the doctrine of parental tort immunity and concludes that, although numerous exceptions exist, the rationales advanced for the doctrine's continued existence are of questionable relevance today.
Fault: A Viable Means Of Re-Injuecting Responsibility In Marital Relations, Adriaen M. Morse Jr.
Fault: A Viable Means Of Re-Injuecting Responsibility In Marital Relations, Adriaen M. Morse Jr.
University of Richmond Law Review
The era of marital fault being the only grounds for divorce in the United States has passed, and its passing brings few tears to the eyes of most. As evidenced by the passage above, the airing of marital fault in open court, even in the days when such practices were the norm, at times shocked the sensibilities and conscience of those who had to listen to the evidence and then issue decisions based upon it.

Regulating Indecent Broadcasting: Setting Sail From Harbors Or Sunk By The V-Chip?, Brett Ferenchak
University of Richmond Law Review
"Family values" has become a familiar phrase in all arenas of American life. As a result of the increasing concern over family values in broadcasting, the religious right, as well as the liberal left, have tried to stay the progression of moral decadence in our youth. The concerns have been directed towards violent, sexual and vulgar content in radio, television, and films.

The Twilight Of Land-Use Controls: A Paradigm Shift?, Charles M. Haar
The Twilight Of Land-Use Controls: A Paradigm Shift?, Charles M. Haar
University of Richmond Law Review
The subject chosen for this discussion is both timely and thought-provoking: the status and future of land-use regulations in the United States. In the hope of making the issues subsumed under this title as exciting to the general public as they are to the practitioners, Professor Michael Allan Wolf has taken the monumental Euclid decision of the United States Supreme Court in 1926 as the pivot of our deliberations. He has posed the question most dramatically with overtones of a swelling Wagnerian overture: "Is It The Twilight of Environmental and Land-Use Regulation?"

Transportation Conformity And Land-Use Planning: Understanding The Inconsistencies, D. Brennen Keene
University of Richmond Law Review
Since the boom of federal environmental laws in the early 1970s, Congress, federal administrative agencies, and the states have grappled with how best to obtain the lofty goals of these laws. As evidence of this struggle, Congress has made substantial amendments to several major environmental laws on one or more occasions in order to achieve these goals, and the states have followed suit in order to keep pace with the changes on the federal level. The resulting mass of state and federal environmental laws and regulations has led to a series of complex, and often confusing, layers of laws and …
Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Domestic Relations, Katharine Salmon Cary, Mary Kathryn Hart
Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Domestic Relations, Katharine Salmon Cary, Mary Kathryn Hart
University of Richmond Law Review
This article reviews some of the important developments in the area of domestic relations law between May 1995 and July 1996. Of particular significance were opinions by the Court of Appeals of Virginia regarding issues of imputed income, the definition of a "day" for shared custody purposes, and the role of marital fault in equitable distribution determinations. The majority of bills passed in the 1996 Session of the General Assembly simply fine-tuned existing law. However, notable statutory revisions were made in the areas of child support and domestic violence. Although the legislature replaced the term "spousal abuse" with "family abuse," …
