The Ideology Of Human Rights, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1996

The Ideology Of Human Rights, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

This piece argues that although human rights is an ideology although it presents itself as non-ideological, non-partisan, and universal. It contends that the human rights corpus, taken as a whole, as a document of ideals and values, particularly the positive law of human rights, requires the construction of states to reflect the structures and values of governance that derive from Western liberalism, especially the contemporary variations of liberal democracy practiced in Western democracies. Viewed from this perspective, the human rights regime has serious and dramatic implications for questions of cultural diversity, the sovereignty of states, and the universality of human …

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady Jan 1996

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the stories which revolve around folk legend Hugh Winder Nibley and what those stories mean to the people of Brigham Young University. Folklore reveals who we are and what is important to us. But, interestingly, folklore tends to reveal more about the person telling the story than about the subject of the story itself. People can't remember every story they hear. The ones they do remember are important to them. The stories are important because they fulfill basic needs of the teller. Such needs are a desire to look up to a hero, a need to fit …

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk Jan 1996

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a record of a journey into the pioneer past both literally and metaphorically. The physical journey retracing the Oregon and Mormon trails was made in September of 1993, the year I was a National Endowment for the Humanities/Reader's Digest Teacher-Scholar; however, my intellectual and emotional journey into the lives of pioneer women covers several years of study. I compare my life experiences with those of pioneer women whom I studied, using geographical settings on the trail trip as memory triggers. My husband, as my traveling companion, plays an important role in this journey of discovery. Major themes …

Interaction Between Millimeter Oscillations And Monocrystal Hexagonal Ferrites With Modulated Resonance Frequency, Alexander A. Kitaytsev, Marina Koledintseva Jan 1996

Interaction Between Millimeter Oscillations And Monocrystal Hexagonal Ferrites With Modulated Resonance Frequency, Alexander A. Kitaytsev, Marina Koledintseva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Investigation of non-linear stable effects taking place at ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in monocrystal arbitrarily oriented hexagonal ferrite resonators (HFR) with controlled (modulated) resonance frequency is an urgent problem. The presented analysis is based on two approaches: the “quasistatic” approach using the static tensor of the HFR magnetic susceptibility and the “dynamic” one based on the solution of the magnetization vector motion equation (MVME) with varying time coefficients due to modulated magnetization field or HFR angle of orientation. The first approach is valid at low modulation frequencies (in comparison with the relaxation frequency of the HFR) and the second one can …

Stock Market Prediction Using Different Neural Network Classification Architectures, Karsten Schierholt, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 1996

Stock Market Prediction Using Different Neural Network Classification Architectures, Karsten Schierholt, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, many attempts have been made to predict the behavior of bonds, currencies, stocks, or stock markets. The Standard and Poors 500 Index is modeled using different neural network classification architectures. Most previous experiments used multilayer perceptrons for stock market forecasting. A multilayer perceptron architecture and a probabilistic neural network are used to predict the incline, decline, or steadiness of the index. The results of trading with the advice given by the network is then compared with the maximum possible performance and the performance of the index. Results show that both networks can be trained to perform better …

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling Jan 1996

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article we report steady, two-dimensional, inviscid solutions for the near field and far field of a supersonic reactive flow over a variable-double-ramp geometry. The incident shock wave compresses and heats the reactants that will combust after flowing some induction length. Upon reaction, a detonation wave forms and intersects the leading wave at some distance from the ramp surface. In this article, reaction-polar diagrams are developed, and the detonation branch solutions are used to investigate the wave interaction processes that may lead to a steady three-wave structure. By considering this formation process new oblique detonation wave stabilization criteria based …

Programmable Logic Controllers, Kelvin T. Erickson Jan 1996

Programmable Logic Controllers, Kelvin T. Erickson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are at the forefront of manufacturing automation. Many factories use programmable logic controllers to cut production costs and/or increase quality. PLCs and their unique language, ladder logic, are the workhorses of factory automation. Higher-level languages, such as sequential function charts and function blocks, ease the programming task for large systems. However, ladder logic remains the dominant language at present

Security-Constrained Optimal Rescheduling Of Real Power Using Hopfield Neural Network, S. Ghosh, Badrul H. Chowdhury Jan 1996

Security-Constrained Optimal Rescheduling Of Real Power Using Hopfield Neural Network, S. Ghosh, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new method for security-constrained corrective rescheduling of real power using the Hopfield neural network is presented. The proposed method is based on solution of a set of differential equations obtained from transformation of an energy function. Results from this work are compared with the results from a method based on dual linear programming formulation of the optimal corrective rescheduling. The minimum deviations in real power generations and loads at buses are combined to form the objective function for optimization. Inclusion of inequality constraints on active line flow limits and equality constraint on real power generation load balance assures a …

A Hybrid Observer For High Performance Brushless Dc Motor Drives, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff Jan 1996

A Hybrid Observer For High Performance Brushless Dc Motor Drives, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Brushless DC motor drive systems are used in a wide variety of applications. These drives may be classified as being one of two types: sinusoidal drives in which there are no low-frequency harmonics in the current waveforms and no low-frequency torque ripple; and nonsinusoidal drives in which there is considerable low-frequency harmonic content, both in the current and torque waveforms. Although sinusoidal drives feature superior performance, they are generally more expensive since rotor position must be sensed on a continuous basis, thus requiring an optical encoder or a resolver, whereas relatively inexpensive Hall-effect sensors may be used for nonsinusoidal drives. …

Enantiomeric Composition And Prevalence Of Some Bicyclic Monoterpenoids In Amber, Daniel W. Armstrong, Eve Y. Zhou, Janusz Zukowski, Barbara Kosmowska-Ceranowicz Jan 1996

Enantiomeric Composition And Prevalence Of Some Bicyclic Monoterpenoids In Amber, Daniel W. Armstrong, Eve Y. Zhou, Janusz Zukowski, Barbara Kosmowska-Ceranowicz

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Among the more prevalent chiral monoterpenoid compounds in conifers are α-pinene, β-pinene, and smaller amounts of camphene and limonene. The most prevalent chiral monoterpenoid compounds in fossilized resin (referred to as amber in this paper) appear to be borneol, isoborneol, and camphene. Most of these compounds have easily measured enantiomeric excesses. The borneol and isoborneol in some amber samples have pronounced enantiomeric excesses despite the fact that they are tens of millions of years old. The enantiomeric ratios of the monoterpenoids in different ambers vary tremendously and often are distinct. However, in any single amber sample, the stereochemistry (absolute configuration) …

Applying The Concept Of Recreational Specialization To Rhode Island Alliance Anglers, Eric Asadorian Jan 1996

Applying The Concept Of Recreational Specialization To Rhode Island Alliance Anglers, Eric Asadorian

Open Access Master's Theses

Many recreationally popular marine species of fish are at or near historic lows in terms of their overall numbers. Many of these species, such as cod, summer flounder, winter flounder, and bluefish, are also commercially valuable. Fishery managers must be able to make allocation and management decisions that both protect the resource and maintain user satisfaction. The basis for achieving this goal lies in the understanding of what the users expectations, satisfactions and perceptions are related to their marine recreational fishing experience. It is often the case that a population of anglers are managed as a homogeneous group, with similar …

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries A1n and A2n have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized 3He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66, and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions g1n (x,Q2) and g2n(x,Q2) over the range 0.032 of 2 (GeV/c)2. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function g1n(x,Q2) is small and …

Q² Evolution Of Chiral-Odd Twist-3 Distributions HL(𝓍, Q²) And E(𝓍, Q²) In Large- NC Qcd, I.I. Balitsky, V. M. Braun, K. Koike, K. Tanaka Jan 1996

Q² Evolution Of Chiral-Odd Twist-3 Distributions HL(𝓍, Q²) And E(𝓍, Q²) In Large- NC Qcd, I.I. Balitsky, V. M. Braun, K. Koike, K. Tanaka

Physics Faculty Publications

We prove that the twist-3 chiral-odd parton distributions obey simple Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations in the limit Nc → ∞ and give analytic results for the corresponding anomalous dimensions. To this end we introduce an evolution equation for the corresponding three-particle twist-3 parton correlation functions and find an exact analytic solution. For large values of n (operator dimension) we are further able to collect all corrections subleading in Nc, so our final results are valid to O((1/N2c)ln(n)/n) accuracy

The Diagnosis Of Lyme Disease Using An Expert System, Corey May Jan 1996

The Diagnosis Of Lyme Disease Using An Expert System, Corey May

Open Access Master's Theses

Diagnosing Lyme disease has been problematic since its first recognition in 1975. An assortment of problems, including clinical symptoms that mimic several other diseases, and lack of an accurate laboratory test, have hindered diagnosis. Overdiagnosis and misdiagnosis may result. This thesis seeks to improve the accuracy of diagnosing Lyme disease by creating an expert system.

The type of expert system developed in this thesis will be a probabilistic Bayesian belief network. The network consists of nodes which represent diagnostic variables and links between nodes which represent the probabilistic influence one node has on another. Much is known about Lyme disease, …

Water Circulation Patterns Detected In Avhrr-Sst Imagery In Relation To Larval Menhaden Abundances In The South Atlantic Bight, Heidi M. Franklin Jan 1996

Water Circulation Patterns Detected In Avhrr-Sst Imagery In Relation To Larval Menhaden Abundances In The South Atlantic Bight, Heidi M. Franklin

Open Access Master's Theses

Sea surface temperature (SST) imagery from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA-9 and NOAA-11 satellites was used to observe surface circulation patterns in shelf waters off the coast of North Carolina. I hypothesized that interannual variation in the frequency and spatial extent of Gulf Stream induced onshore pulses of warm water are a cause of inter-annually varying larval fish abundances arriving at the mouths of North Carolina estuaries. The Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, is an estuarine-dependent species which spawns offshore in 18-22°C water over a protracted period from November to April. A major menhaden spawning …

This paper examines: (1) The automated mapping/facilities management and geographic information system (AM/FM/GIS), which are called computer-assisted spatial information systems (CASIS) in this paper, software selection process; (2) develops a knowledge-based, multiattribute, multiobjective, consensus building model (CBM); and (3) establishes the validity for using the exogenously developed CBM for the selection of CASIS software. Model formulation is based on analyzing how well the attributes of the software meet user requirements in four areas: functionality, technical capability, vendor characteristics, and costs. Expert knowledge was gathered from several domain practitioners regarding the ability of GIS software functions to fulfill a user's needs. …

Structure And Phase Transformation Of Lanthanum Chromate, J. D. Carter, Harlan U. Anderson, M. G. Shumsky Jan 1996

Structure And Phase Transformation Of Lanthanum Chromate, J. D. Carter, Harlan U. Anderson, M. G. Shumsky

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lanthanum chromate (LaCrO4) was synthesized as a low temperature ( < 700°C) intermediate to perovskite-type, lanthanum chromite (LaCrO3). The lattice parameters, atom positions and bond lengths determined from X-ray powder diffraction show that LaCrO4 forms a monazite-type crystal structure. Lanthanum chromate forms a solid solution with Ca, having a solubility between 10 and 20 at %. Thermal analysis shows that at ambient oxygen pressure, LaCrO4 transforms to LaCrO3 at a temperature near 700°C. It also indicates that (La,Ca)CrO4 initially transforms to LaCrO3 and CaCrO4 with the subsequent formation of a (La,Ca)CrO3 solid solution. Evidence of Ca segregation to the surface of (La,Ca) CrO3 particles is given by Auger electron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. © 1996 Chapman & Hall.

Liquid Phase Behaviour In Nonstoichiometric Calcium-Doped Lanthanum Chromites, J. D. Carter, M. M. Nasrallah, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1996

Liquid Phase Behaviour In Nonstoichiometric Calcium-Doped Lanthanum Chromites, J. D. Carter, M. M. Nasrallah, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The sinter ability of (La,Ca)CrO3 is analyzed by comparing the liquid phase behavior in A-site excess and A-site deficient compositions (referring to the ABO3 formula). The analysis shows that a series of A-site excess and deficient compositions form distinct liquid phases belonging to the CaO-Cr2O3 phase system. Although both series experience grain growth and densification due to the presence of a liquid phase, the A-site excess compositions exhibit greater shrinkage and sinter to closed porosity, whereas the A-site deficient compositions remain porous. During the final stages of sintering, surplus liquid from the A-site excess material exudes to the free-surface forming …

Effect Of Pt Doping On Nucleation And Crystallization In Li2o · 2sio2 Glass: Experimental Measurements And Computer Modeling, K. Lakshmi Narayan, K. F. Kelton, C. S. Ray Jan 1996

Effect Of Pt Doping On Nucleation And Crystallization In Li2o · 2sio2 Glass: Experimental Measurements And Computer Modeling, K. Lakshmi Narayan, K. F. Kelton, C. S. Ray

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heterogeneous nucleation and its effects on the crystallization of lithium disilicate glass containing small amounts of Pt are investigated. Measurements of the nucleation frequencies and induction times with and without Pt are shown to be consistent with predictions based on the classical nucleation theory. A realistic computer model for the transformation is presented. Computed differential thermal analysis data (such as crystallization rates as a function of time and temperature) are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results. This modeling provides a new, more quantitative method for analyzing calorimetric data.

Deconstruction, Existentialism, And Art, Ryutaro Furuhashi Jan 1996

Deconstruction, Existentialism, And Art, Ryutaro Furuhashi

Theses

My thesis is about deconstruction of existentialism through visual images, or more precisely, deconstructive visual representations of existential themes. The question of human existence has been a primal interest in my work. What is the meaning of existence? How can I make sense of man's unique intellectual capacity to question one's own existence? My concern is not so much about coming up with the answer, but to have a language to disclose the condition. In the past, my work was merely the ambiguous expression of the existential feeling without any particular conceptual foundation. My work is now a manifestation of …

Current Practices In The Use Of Thematic Picture Projective Techniques In Social-Emotional Assessment: A Survey Of Practitioners, Dave Thomas Jan 1996

Current Practices In The Use Of Thematic Picture Projective Techniques In Social-Emotional Assessment: A Survey Of Practitioners, Dave Thomas

Theses

The current study investigated the status of the use of thematic picture projective techniques (TPP's) and other social-emotional-behavioral assessment techniques among practicing school psychologists. A total of 1 ,400 surveys were mailed to practicing school psychologists across the country. The return rate was 30%. This study looked at four factors: training in the use of TPP's, attitudes regarding TPP's, current practices in the use of TPP's, and current practices in social-emotional assessment. Results indicate that TPP's are used only rarely in assessment of socialemotional- behavioral concerns even though they are perceived by most school psychologists as somewhat to very valuable. …

A Cfd Study Of Fluid Flow Characteristics In The Vicinity Of A Truncated Sphere In A Long, Narrow Channel, Chukwuemeka Ikenze

Theses

In this work, a computational fluid dynamics software (STAR-CD) has been used to study the fluid flow characteristics near a small, truncated sphere located on the floor of a long, narrow channel. The sphere represents a nucleating bubble formed in a subcooled flow boiling process. The predictions of the CFD analyses are helpful toward developing an understanding of the mechanisms which drive the formation of bubbles, and their subsequent departure from a heated surface during this process. The working fluid is water at 20 celsius. The analyses yielded velocity vectors near the sphere, pressure contours and a stagnation point on …

Heat Shrink Sleeves For Mb/Bacttm Bottles, Denise Pontillo Jan 1996

Heat Shrink Sleeves For Mb/Bacttm Bottles, Denise Pontillo

Theses

Organon Teknika Corporation markets a diagnostic test system that detects mycobacteria. The test media is sold in a tubing glass bottle which may break if dropped or weakened in shipment to the laboratory. Because mycobacteria is a very infectious airborne agent, there is concern in the marketplace that the potential for breakage of glass bottles places the laboratory technician and environment at risk. While tests are under way to identify a plastic bottle suitable for this application, Organon Teknika is pursuing the use of a heat shrink sleeve as an option to improve the safety of this product. This study …
