Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1996

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper illustrates how popular music written, produced, and performed by Singaporeans provides a means through which the culture and society of Singapore may be understood. Music with English language text conveys a sense of place and reflects a distinctively Singaporean spirit and identity. The paper examines four themes: the portrayal of Singapore's multiracial population which reflects a unique cultural synthesis; the Singaporeans' concept of urbanity, manifested as the simultaneous attraction and repulsion towards the city and the desire for nature and the rustic; the distinctive social engineering in Singapore; and the way in which global issues are imported into …

The Effects Of Mass Extinction On Escalation Of The Naticid Gastropod Predator-Prey System At The Eocene-Oligocene, Vicky D. Melland

Theses and Dissertations

In 1987, Vermeij proposed the hypothesis of escalation, which states that biological hazards, such as predation, have increased through the Phanerozoic. This hypothesis has been extremely controversial due to the fact that it assumes that biotic factors, such as predation, have had an important role in evolution. Several studies have focused on the validity of the hypothesis of escalation. Kelley and Hansen (1996) offered a modified exposition of the escalation hypothesis. The Kelley-Hansen hypothesis states that escalation cycles are punctuated by periods of mass extinction. The periods of mass extinction would preferentially eliminate the highly escalated prey and, therefore, a …

Describing The Elephant: Multiple Perspectives In New York City's Watershed Protection Conflict, Krystyna Anne Stave Jan 1996

Describing The Elephant: Multiple Perspectives In New York City's Watershed Protection Conflict, Krystyna Anne Stave

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

New York City's efforts to avoid filtration mandated by the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments and the 1989 Surface Water Treatment Rule have generated considerable controversy. Since the conflict began in 1990, a spectrum of stakeholder groups has emerged, representing land owners, sport fishermen, businesses, environmental groups, developers, and watershed communities. What was originally defined by New York City water supply managers as a scientific problem--identifying sources of water quality degradation and preventing contaminants from entering the water supply system--now has broadened to include a diverse set of social and economic issues as well.

The Effects Of Contralateral Limb Strength Training On Muscle Atrophy In An Immobilized Upper Extremity, Robin R. Hlavacek Jan 1996

The Effects Of Contralateral Limb Strength Training On Muscle Atrophy In An Immobilized Upper Extremity, Robin R. Hlavacek

Masters Theses

Four case studies were used to evaluate the effects of three weeks of isokinetic strength training on retarding muscle atrophy in the contralateral casted limb. The non-dominant arm of each subject was immobilized in a long-arm plaster cast. Two subjects participated in an isokinetic strength training program three times per week for three weeks and two subjects were untrained. Each subject was measured for limb circumference and strength before and after casting. Pre- and post-immobilization values were compared within each subject. The results suggest a possible cross transfer effect of strength from the trained limb to the casted limb in …

The Long Journey: From Institutionalization To Adult Day Care, Kristin L Kampschroeder Jan 1996

The Long Journey: From Institutionalization To Adult Day Care, Kristin L Kampschroeder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will present a field study of an adult day care center in an attempt to establish a new methodology which will address the different types of clients in the recent phenomenon of adult day care settings. Previous research and field study has only focused on adults within institutional settings or on the institutions themselves. Adult day care, on the other hand, has arisen as an alternate form of care which allows for greater flexibility and concern for clients' needs. This thesis, then, in differentiating adult day care from total institutions and in delineating the types of clients, will …

Land And Self In A Mayan Universe, Robert Charles Rusie Jan 1996

Land And Self In A Mayan Universe, Robert Charles Rusie

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper explores the linkages between Mayan religious beliefs as presented in, The Popol Vuh and The Book of Chilam Balam, myth, and modern ethnographic material for clues to Mayan economic behavior. It presents the argument that the "closed corporate system" and the reliance on the municipio as the focus of identity is a function of World-view, and that Mayans see land as a symbol of self and community. The ensuing economic behavior and the strong attachment to "milpa production" is more than an adaptive strategy to the vicissitudes of economic insecurity, but a route to maintaining balance and harmony …

Predator-Prey Interactions Of Zooplankton From A Shallow Endorheic Lake: Little Fish Lake, Nevada, Stephanie Elise Hampton Jan 1996

Predator-Prey Interactions Of Zooplankton From A Shallow Endorheic Lake: Little Fish Lake, Nevada, Stephanie Elise Hampton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The zooplankton community of Little Fish Lake exists in a seasonally and interannually variable physical environment. This shallow endorheic lake is particularly sensitive to climatic variability; depth and salinity fluctuate during periods of prolonged evaporation or precipitation. I examined zooplankton seasonal succession in Little Fish Lake during a period of relatively low salinity from March 1995 through March 1996. The community was more diverse during my study than it had been in periods of high salinity. While abiotic conditions probably affected the community structure, biotic interactions such as predation likely influenced succession as well. I observed interactions between the predaceous …

Development Of Fluoroimmunoassays For The Determination Of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid, Steven Daniel Kohl Jan 1996

Development Of Fluoroimmunoassays For The Determination Of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid, Steven Daniel Kohl

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The focus of this project was to develop fluorescence-based immunoassays for the determination of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Three formats using polyclonal anti-2,4-D sera were developed, the first being a homogeneous, competitive assay based on the principle of fluorescence energy transfer. This assay exhibited a linear dynamic range of 100 ppb to 100 ppm; The next two formats are heterogeneous, competitive assays that were developed using a prototype KinExA{dollar}\rm\sp{TM}{dollar} immunoanalyzer. The assay formats use either antibody or antigen coated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads as a renewable solid phase. The KinExA{dollar}\rm\sp{TM}{dollar} assay was demonstrated in buffered saline solution as well as in aquatic …

Accepting Blacks And Homosexuals Into The Military: Truman And Clinton Argue For Equal Rights, Jayde Allen Leonard Jan 1996

Accepting Blacks And Homosexuals Into The Military: Truman And Clinton Argue For Equal Rights, Jayde Allen Leonard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, the rhetoric surrounding President Clinton's announcement will be compared to the rhetoric surrounding President Truman's order for racial integration of the armed services. These significant presidential announcements, while seemingly unrelated, changed the focus of national debate on two controversial issues. To determine what similarities and differences exist in the rhetoric surrounding the two events I will compare the events using analog criticism (a method of comparing and contrasting two rhetorical events) as the framework for the study. Government studies and newspaper accounts of both rhetorical events will be relied upon to contrast and compare the rhetorical events.

A Test Of A Dual Central Pattern Generator Hypothesis For Subcortical Control Of Locomotion, Michael Lee Rodrigue Jan 1996

A Test Of A Dual Central Pattern Generator Hypothesis For Subcortical Control Of Locomotion, Michael Lee Rodrigue

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An understanding of how locomotion occurs can help prevent or possibly restore its loss. Observations of coordination and reflex gating during locomotion display characteristics indicative of subcortical influence. These findings support the existence of neural circuits in the spine and cerebellum that coordinate muscle activity and reflex activity during locomotion. These circuits are generally called central pattern generators (CPG's). A task that strains the modulation of reflexes but not coordination (e.g., out-of-phase walking) may yield dissociative patterns of errors, which would provide important information about the complexity of the subcortical circuitry. In the present study, nine participants walked on a …

An Economic Approach To The Study Of Polygamy: A Case Study Of Mormon Polygyny, Joseph Dean Diaz Jan 1996

An Economic Approach To The Study Of Polygamy: A Case Study Of Mormon Polygyny, Joseph Dean Diaz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This is a study of polygamy using economic theory and economic models. The focus of this research is an analysis of the occurrence of polygyny in the early Mormon church, and its effects on the members of the state of Utah, both Mormon and non-Mormon. This study is unique in that its subject, Mormon polygyny, was socially acceptable in Utah, but illegal, and often prosecuted, under Federal law. This combination had multiple negative effects on all aspects of the lives of Utah Mormons, however, the practice continued for approximately 60 years. The ways in which it occurred as well as …
