The Utilization Of Selected Marketing Elements By Higher Education Institutions, Chester Donald Kajcienski Jan 1996

The Utilization Of Selected Marketing Elements By Higher Education Institutions, Chester Donald Kajcienski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the utilization of selected marketing elements by higher education institutions enrolling 5,000 or more students by headcount. Selected marketing elements were determined by a content analysis of marketing textbooks which yielded 20 such elements: product, price, strategy, market, promotion, research, mix, analysis, advertising, target, competition, segment, service, information, demand, forecasting, place, purchase, image, and demographics. These elements became the basis for a survey instrument designed specifically for this project. Furthermore, 15 items on the survey instrument suggested various factors that might constrain the full utilization of marketing; In terms of the selected …

Comparative Biogeography Within And Among Four Species Of Lizards In Western North American Deserts (Crotaphytidae: Crotaphytus Bicinctores, C Collaris, Gambelia Wislizeni; Phrynosomatidae: Sceloporus Magister), David I Orange Jan 1996

Comparative Biogeography Within And Among Four Species Of Lizards In Western North American Deserts (Crotaphytidae: Crotaphytus Bicinctores, C Collaris, Gambelia Wislizeni; Phrynosomatidae: Sceloporus Magister), David I Orange

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Evidence of deep geographic structure in many taxonomic lineages throughout the arid regions of western North America suggests potential for recovering episodes of vicariant isolation and divergence through comparative biogeographic approaches. Vicariance biogeography predicts that suites of co-occurring taxa should demonstrate similar geographic patterns of genetic divergence resulting from simultaneous isolation of formerly contiguous regional populations. Previous molecular phylogeographic work on small, non-volant desert taxa tended to focus on one or two species, often with limited distributions. Different methods of sampling and analyses confound general statements about the presence of regional endemic biotas. Assessment of general biogeographic patterns in biotas …

Las Vegas In Popular Culture, Edward E Baldwin Jan 1996

Las Vegas In Popular Culture, Edward E Baldwin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Las Vegas in Popular Culture is a survey and analysis of the depiction of Las Vegas in American popular culture. The dissertation identifies themes and patterns of interpretations of Las Vegas, a city which has come to occupy a central position in popular American mythology. The primary emphasis is on nationally published novels, short stories, and magazine articles, with a brief section on films. The material is evaluated in chronological order so that the depictions of Las Vegas can be seen in their historical contexts. Since the 1930s, writers in each succeeding decade emphasize different aspects of Las Vegas which …

Avian Habitat Use In Southern Nevada Riparian Areas With Varying Amounts Of Tamarix Ramosissima, Sandra Lou Haigh Jan 1996

Avian Habitat Use In Southern Nevada Riparian Areas With Varying Amounts Of Tamarix Ramosissima, Sandra Lou Haigh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Avian species richness, species diversity, and density were measured and compared over a 21 month period on six riparian sites in Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), southern Nevada. Sites consisted of two lake shore areas with almost pure stands of Tamarix ramosissima and four stream side areas, two with mixed Tamarix and native vegetation and two with only native vegetation. Overall mean avian species richness, diversity, and density were lowest on lake shore sites, intermediate on mixed stream sites and highest on stream sites with native vegetation. Differences in these values were significant between lake shore and stream sites …

Contesting The Commons: Race, Ethnicity, Class, Occupation, And Environment In Central Nevada, 1850-1880, Brian Wesley Frehner Jan 1996

Contesting The Commons: Race, Ethnicity, Class, Occupation, And Environment In Central Nevada, 1850-1880, Brian Wesley Frehner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis tells a story of resource competition in central Nevada primarily between two groups--Shoshone Indians who inhabited the region for centuries and European Americans who arrived in the nineteenth century. Although people who competed for control of the region's pinion pine trees generally fell into either of these categories, the labels of Indian and European grossly oversimplify the diversity within each group. Both Shoshone and Europeans comprised a variety of sub-groupings that utilized resources in a distinct manner and for purposes that often differed from those of the larger population. A number of different Shoshone bands and families competed …

Mortuary Practices On Children, Stephanie Jo Fox Jan 1996

Mortuary Practices On Children, Stephanie Jo Fox

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is a reevaluation of past theories that recommend the use of mortuary practices to determine rank within cultures as applied to children. A comparative study of 40 cultures world wide is conducted using the Human Relation Area Files for ethnographic examples of mortuary practices. Funerary and mourning rituals performed for both children and adults are studied to see how the deceased's social position affects mortuary treatment. Thirteen of 26 egalitarian cultures that yielded information have funerary and mourning rituals that are the same or very similar for both adults and children. With thirteen remaining egalitarian cultures the data …

Parting The Bamboo Curtain: The Enigmatic Political And Strategic Quest Of Richard Nixon For Detente With Communist China, Ian C Harrison Jan 1996

Parting The Bamboo Curtain: The Enigmatic Political And Strategic Quest Of Richard Nixon For Detente With Communist China, Ian C Harrison

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

President Richard Nixon's decision to unofficially recognize Communist China during the early 1970s represented an apparently sudden political and strategic turnabout for both he and the United States. After decades of virulent anti-Communism upon which a meteoric political career was built, Nixon, faced with mounting domestic pressures to end the Vietnam War and the necessity of obtaining policy concessions from the Soviet Union, embarked upon a course of detente with Mainland China that seemed to completely contradict his hawkish, Cold Warrior image. Far from being a strictly political maneuver in the months leading to the 1972 presidential election, Nixon's decision …

The Use Of The Genitive In The Arthurian Section Of Layamon's "Brut", Heather Fleming Grigg Jan 1996

The Use Of The Genitive In The Arthurian Section Of Layamon's "Brut", Heather Fleming Grigg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

New insights into the use of the genitive case in Early Middle English are possible because of the recent publication of Bruce Mitchell's Old English Syntax which updates previous exhaustive grammars. Using Layamon's Brut as a basis of study, it was found that Layamon employs a variety of case endings to indicate the genitive; alternatively, he uses of-periphrasis. He appears to be choosing among these grammatically acceptable possibilities in order to facilitate meter and rhyme.

A Path To Nowhere: Violence, Sex, And Humor In Cormac Mccarthy's "Child Of God" And "Suttree", Justin Cord Hayes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A Path to Nowhere: Violence, Sex, and Humor in Cormac McCarthy's Child of God and Suttree discusses some of the uses of three prevalent elements in two of McCarthy's works. Chapter One introduces violence and its importance to his fiction, demonstrating that it is often linked with sex and humor, and it discusses the two novels' lack of closure. Chapter Two describes McCarthy's use of the three elements in Child of God. Chapter Three illustrates his use of the elements in Suttree. Chapter Four concludes the essay by offering some reasons why Child of God and Suttree lack closure.

"Red Alert In Cyberspace": A Battle Over First Amendment Privileges On The Internet, Derek Michael Belt Jan 1996

"Red Alert In Cyberspace": A Battle Over First Amendment Privileges On The Internet, Derek Michael Belt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper covers Internet communication and the ability of consenting adults to freely and openly express ideas regardless of content, especially when dealing with obscene and indecent materials. The first chapter focuses on the inability of the American courts to specifically define what obscenity is and exactly where it falls within the realm of First Amendment protection. In that chapter, I discuss the theoretical backdrop for the entire obscenity issue. The second chapter focuses on the governmental attempt to regulate Internet communications, focusing on the Communications Decency Act of 1996. The final chapter covers the July 1997 Supreme Court's deliberation …

Developmental Physiology Of The Red Swamp Crayfish Procambarus Clarkii, Stacey Lynn Chapman Jan 1996

Developmental Physiology Of The Red Swamp Crayfish Procambarus Clarkii, Stacey Lynn Chapman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary goal of this research was to gain an understanding of the temporal sequence of cardiac regulatory mechanisms throughout the development of the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii. Investigations focused on cardiac development and the ontogeny of the regulatory mechanisms of the cardiovascular system. Investigations concentrated on two areas: (1) the development of a staging scheme for P. clarkii, and (2) the ontogeny of neurohormonal regulation of the heart of P. clarkii. An embryonic staging scheme was established to allow a comparison between animals of the same "chronological-age" (fertilized at the same time), but not of the same developmental …

Age-Related Dendritic Changes In Human Occipital And Prefrontal Cortices: A Quantitative Golgi Study, Kelly A. Courns, Bob Jacobs Jan 1996

Age-Related Dendritic Changes In Human Occipital And Prefrontal Cortices: A Quantitative Golgi Study, Kelly A. Courns, Bob Jacobs

Modern Psychological Studies

Qualitative (Scheibe!, 1992) and quantitative (Jacobs & Scheibel, 1993) research indicates a general decline in dendritic neuropil with increasing age. The present study extends previous human dendritic research by examining quantitatively age-related changes in 2 cortical areas: prefrontal cortex (area 10) and occipital cortex (area 18). Tissue blocks were obtained from the left hemisphere of 10 neurologically normal subjects, ranging in age from 23 to 81 years. Blocks were stained with a modified rapid Golgi technique. Supragranular pyramidal cells were quantified on a Neurolucida computer/microscope interface system (Microbrightfield, Inc.). Dendritic system complexity was determined by several dependent measures: total dendritic …

The Cyclical-Interaction Model: How Phobia Onset Disrupts Normal Cognitive Processing, Maryl Barton Jan 1996

The Cyclical-Interaction Model: How Phobia Onset Disrupts Normal Cognitive Processing, Maryl Barton

Modern Psychological Studies

A growing body o f cognitive research indicates that there is likely to be a cognitive basis for the onset, development, and maintenance of phobias. This possibility is examined relative to the potential for phobias to disrupt normal cognitive processing. Both the behavioral and cognitive approaches to the understanding and treatment o f phobias are explored. A hypothetical model is presented in which areas of cognitive disruption via phobia onset are explored, and a hypothetical case is presented to illustrate the new model. Implications of the new model for pursuing better phobia treatments, and the possible application of this model …

Capture And Counteraction: Self- Help By Environmental Zealots (Allen Chair Symposium 1996: The Future Of Environmental And Land-Use Regulation), James E. Krier Jan 1996

Capture And Counteraction: Self- Help By Environmental Zealots (Allen Chair Symposium 1996: The Future Of Environmental And Land-Use Regulation), James E. Krier

Articles

Self-help is a largely neglected topic in American legal studies.1 With the exception of a survey by a group of law students published a dozen years ago,2 there appears to be little, if anything, in our legal literature that confronts the subject in a systematic way.3 This is so, at least, if one defines self-help as I do. To me, the term refers to any act of bypassing the formal legal system in order to get what one wants.

Honduras' Transisthmian Corridor: An Historical Geography Of Roadbuilding In Colonial Central America., Scott Arlen Brady Jan 1996

Honduras' Transisthmian Corridor: An Historical Geography Of Roadbuilding In Colonial Central America., Scott Arlen Brady

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Historical route geographers consider the factors that influenced past roadbuilding, and the changes that result from roadbuilding. The earliest Spanish colonial officials in Central America initiated roadbuilding projects that were sensitive to physical and cultural factors. Officials had to consider the region's aboriginal routes, Spain's trade flows, the isthmus' topography, and the region's population distribution. The roads the Spaniards opened four centuries ago guided early settlement. In some cases, these early roads persist in the region's route network. During the 16th-century Spaniards sought to establish transisthmian roadways that would link Spain's Atlantic and Pacific maritime networks. Partial fluvial routes across …

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatusheme Gene., Georgia Ineichen Jan 1996

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatusheme Gene., Georgia Ineichen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple nonsulfur bacterium, the tetrapyrrole pathway yields four end products: siroheme, vitamin B12, heme and bacteriochlorophyll. Growth of R. capsulatus under low oxygen tension increases carbon flow through the tetrapyrrole pathway up to 100 fold. The mechanism(s) for this regulation is currently unknown. One regulatory mechanism could be transcriptional control of one or more of the genes in the common portion of the tetrapyrrole pathway. The fifth gene in the pathway, hemE, has been cloned by complementation of an Escherichia coli hemE::miniTn10 mutant. Sequence data of hemE revealed the presence of an upstream palindrome that is …

Importance Of A Siderophore In The Pathogenesis And Virulence Of Photobacterium Damsela Subsp. Piscicida In Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone Saxatili X Morone Chrysops)., John Phillip Hawke Jan 1996

Importance Of A Siderophore In The Pathogenesis And Virulence Of Photobacterium Damsela Subsp. Piscicida In Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone Saxatili X Morone Chrysops)., John Phillip Hawke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida, formerly Pasteurella piscicida, is an important new pathogen of hybrid striped bass cultured in brackish water on Louisiana mariculture farms. Louisiana isolates compared with strains of P. damsela subsp. piscicida from Greece, Japan, Israel and Chesapeake Bay, USA and were found to be identical in biochemical phenotype and enzymic activity. Small plasmids of 8 and 5 kb were unique to Louisiana strains. Sequential daily bacteriology and histopathology on hybrid striped bass experimentally infected by immersion revealed that following high doses (13,000 CFU/ml) the gills and spleen are colonized first as early as 24 hours PI, followed …

The "Sacred Harp" In The Urban North: 1970-1995., Mark David Johnson Jan 1996

The "Sacred Harp" In The Urban North: 1970-1995., Mark David Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1994 the Sacred Harp, a southern, shape-note tunebook, entered its 150th year of continuous use. First compiled in 1844 by B. F. White and E. J. King, and updated numerous times, The Sacred Harp books in the "Denson" tradition, including The Sacred Harp: 1991 Edition, are today the most popular and widely used twentieth-century revisions of any nineteenth-century tunebook. Sacred Harp singing has been a largely rural, Southern tradition and in the years between 1844 and the early 1970s several hundred separate singings were founded, many of which continue to be active. In the early 1990s the Sacred Harp …

Experimental Lymphatic Filariasis In Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus): Molecular Cloning And Expression Of Gerbil Cytokines And Measurement Of Cytokine Gene Expression During A Primary Infection Of Brugia Pahangi., Zhiming Mai Jan 1996

Experimental Lymphatic Filariasis In Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus): Molecular Cloning And Expression Of Gerbil Cytokines And Measurement Of Cytokine Gene Expression During A Primary Infection Of Brugia Pahangi., Zhiming Mai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cytokines play an important role in regulation of T cell responses. Two T helper cell subsets have been identified in some species and are defined by their cytokine secretion profiles. Th1 cells produce IL-2 and IFN-$\gamma,$ whereas Th2 cells express IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10. Precursor T cells that express a mixture of these cytokines are considered Th0 cells. It is hypothesized that primary infections of Brugia pahangi in gerbils induce an initial Th0 or Th1 like response which with time becomes a Th2 like response. To test this dynamic parasitism induced shift in cytokine profile, it is necessary to measure …

Inflammatory Responses Of The Jird To Brugia Pahangi: Parasite Stage Specificity And Role Of The Macrophage., Carmen Nasarre Jan 1996

Inflammatory Responses Of The Jird To Brugia Pahangi: Parasite Stage Specificity And Role Of The Macrophage., Carmen Nasarre

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The host systemic and peritoneal inflammatory responses against different stages of Brugia pahangi were compared in intraperitoneally infected-jirds. Systemic inflammatory responses were assessed by measuring the pulmonary granulomatous response to B. pahangi antigen-coated beads (PGRN). Peritoneal inflammation was characterized by enumeration of different cell types in peritoneal exudates following infection. Further, the toxoplasmacidal activity and TNF-$\alpha$-like production of peritoneal macrophages were also characterized. Infection with L3, L4, male worms, female worms, microfilariae (MF) or dead adult worms induced a rapid PGRN. This response decreased to levels of controls in jirds inoculated with living parasites at the chronic time period, indicating …

Image Analysis Quantification Of Decondensation Of Bovine Spermatozoa And Pcr Amplification Of A Y Chromosome Specific Sequence., Hilde Christina Steinholt Jan 1996

Image Analysis Quantification Of Decondensation Of Bovine Spermatozoa And Pcr Amplification Of A Y Chromosome Specific Sequence., Hilde Christina Steinholt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The first objective of this research was to develop a decondensation treatment for bovine spermatozoal DNA that worked consistently across bulls and breeds. The second objective was to use the decondensed DNA for polymerase chain reaction analysis of levels of Y-bearing spermatozoa in different ejaculates and in sex sorted spermatozoa. Decondensation of spermatozoa with dithiothreitol and potassium hydroxide was compatible with in vitro amplification and did not inhibit amplification. The polymerase chain reaction and image analysis were used to differentiate between proportions of Y spermatozoa by measuring fluorescent intensities of electrophoresed, polymerase chain reaction-amplified DNA. There were differences in intensities …

The Amazon Myth In Western Literature., Bruce Robert Magee Jan 1996

The Amazon Myth In Western Literature., Bruce Robert Magee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation identifies and evaluates the ways in which the Amazon myth has functioned. The Amazon myth functions within broader discourses about the Orient, Africa, and women. It has implications for the ways we define "self" and "other." Because they are often represented as a threat to the border from long ago and/or far away, Amazons can serve both as an excuse for fortifying the center against the margin, and as a way of projecting fantasies into the void. The Amazon myth has incited men to action as they have searched for adventure and Amazons abroad. Intended in part as …
