The Interrelation Of Gypsy Culture And School Culture: An Ethnography Study Of Interactions., Marina Izquierdo Carter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purposes of this study were to gain an understanding of the Gypsy culture and to discover the relationship, within the school domain, between the Gypsy children and the non-Gypsy teachers. The study was conducted in Malaga, Spain and lasted two and a half months. The research design for this study was qualitative. Data for this ethnographic research were gathered using three strategies: (1) participant observations, (2) interviews, (3) collecting school magazines. Three models of analysis for collected data were used: Domain analysis, Cultural Themes analysis, and Code Analysis. The Gypsy participants were part of the population of the Gypsy …

The Gatt And The Environment: Irreconcilable Differences?, John Bogardus
The Gatt And The Environment: Irreconcilable Differences?, John Bogardus
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has governed the trading rules between its contracting parties since its inception in 1947. The Final Act Embodying the Results of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations was signed in Marrakesh on April 15, 1994. The Final Act called for the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) which came into being on January 1, 1995. The raison d'être of the WTO is to eliminate barriers of any sort that have an adverse impact upon trade between WTO contracting parties. Environmental leaders are concerned that an effective technique for promoting environmental …
The Gatt And The Unmaking Of International Environmental Law, Robert Weir
The Gatt And The Unmaking Of International Environmental Law, Robert Weir
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
This paper examines the uneasy relationship between the regulation of international trade and international environmental law. In particular, it focuses on two GATT panel decisions that struck down US-imposed trade embargoes on tuna products imported from countries that the US considered killed too many dolphins in their tuna fisheries. The implications of the decisions went far beyond the immediate environmental issue that faced the GATT panels, bringing into question the validity of trade sanctions as a means of enforcing and strengthening existing multilateral environmental agreements. At the same time, however, a critical examination of the American position reveals serious flaws …

Excursion On The Euxine, Theophilus C. Prousis
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Neal Ascherson, a British writer, journalist, and Poland specialist, has performed an admirable task-and done it well-reminding us of the Black Sea's centrality in the destiny of ancient Greeks, Scythians, Sarmatians, Goths, Khazars, Tatars, Slavs, Turks, and a host of other peoples who swept across the Pontic Steppe. In a work that combines travel writing, journalism, scholarly discourse, intellectual probing, and personal pilgrimage, Ascherson evokes places and peoples, discusses contemporary issues and problems, investigates history, culture, and archaeology, and explores the intrinsically difficult matter of sorting out national identities in multi-ethnic societies. Above all, this richly textured work illumines the …

Building Community Commitment For A Region's Future: The Case Of Port Stephens, Australia, Harold Richins
Building Community Commitment For A Region's Future: The Case Of Port Stephens, Australia, Harold Richins
Visions in Leisure and Business
With tremendous growth in coastal communities of Australia within the last two decades, intense pressures have been placed on local communities, especially in the areas where tourism is a growing phenomenon. People living in these sensitive regions have been searching for long term solutions. There are many challenges, however, in meeting the needs and dealing with the complex relationships between tourists, residents, investors, providers of tourist and lifestyle experiences, non-government and government organisations. To meet these difficulties, community groups have attempted to gain local awareness of the costs and benefits of more responsible, community based approaches to tourism and other …
Theme Parks And Attractions In Singapore: An Overview, Ah Keng Kau
Theme Parks And Attractions In Singapore: An Overview, Ah Keng Kau
Visions in Leisure and Business
Singapore attracted almost 7 million visitors in 1994. Receipts from tourists also accounted for about 10 percent of the gross national product. As a small island of only 640 square kilometers, Singapore has almost no natural scenery to offer. Many of its tourism attractions are man-made and theme parks play an important role in attracting visitors not only from abroad but also locally. This paper aims to describe the local theme park industry and examine its problems and prospects. It is found that the theme parks in Singapore will face stiff competition, not only from each other, but also from …
Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman
Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman
JTRP Technical Reports
Although the constructive reuse of foundry residuals represents a decidedly beneficial goal with distinct economic and environmental benefits, potential end-users are nonetheless reluctant to use these residuals, given an inherent concern about potential unforeseen environmental liabilities. Results of foundry residual leachate characterization to date strongly suggest that many ferrous foundries are discarding sands whose quality is fully amenable to their future use with embankment construction and related high-volume highway development activities. In order to provide additional assurance as to the environmental impact of foundry residual reuse, the MicrotoxTM bioassay has been used to quantify the response of living organisms (e.g., …

Review Essay: “Indians Are Us?: Culture And Genocide In Native North America" By Me Monroe, John P. Lavelle
Faculty Scholarship
Indians Are Us? is a collection of commentaries on American Indian political and social affairs, written in the truculent tone that readers have come to expect from writer Ward Churchill. Like its predecessors, Fantasies of the Master Race and Struggle far the Land, this latest Churchill project consists largely of polemical pieces hastily compiled from obscure leftist publications.
