Bioremediation Treatability Studies For Soils Containing Herbicides, Chemicals, And Petroleum Products, Loring F. Nies, Matthew B. Mesarch Jan 1996

Bioremediation Treatability Studies For Soils Containing Herbicides, Chemicals, And Petroleum Products, Loring F. Nies, Matthew B. Mesarch

JTRP Technical Reports

Leaking underground storage tanks are widespread throughout the United States. It is estimated that there are 1.4 million underground gasoline storage tanks in the United States, with as many as 75,000 to 100,000 that may be leaking. In Indiana alone, more than 3,500 of the 15,000 registered underground storage tank facilities have reported leaks. Conventional remediation methods often involve pump-and-treat schemes for contaminated water, and excavation and burial of contaminated soil in hazardous waste landfills. These methods increase the risk of exposure to pollutants for workers and local residents. Furthermore, these methods merely involve the transfer of pollutants from one …

Constitutional Fictions And Meritocratic Success Stories, Robin West Jan 1996

Constitutional Fictions And Meritocratic Success Stories, Robin West

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

L.H. LaRue demonstrates in his book, Constitutional Law as Fiction, that, at least in the realm of constitutional law, there is no simple correspondence between fiction and falsehood, or fact and truth. Partial or fictive accounts of our constitutional history, even when they are riddled with inaccuracies, may state deep truths about our world, and accurate recitations of historical events may be either intentionally or unintentionally misleading in the extreme. According to LaRue, the Supreme Court engages in a form of storytelling or myth-making that goes beyond the inevitably partial narratives of fact and precedent. The Supreme Court also tells …

Beyond Autonomy: Coercion And Morality In Clinical Relationships, Maxwell Gregg Bloche Jan 1996

Beyond Autonomy: Coercion And Morality In Clinical Relationships, Maxwell Gregg Bloche

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article considers the problem of line-drawing between autonomy-preserving and autonomy-negating influence in clinical relationships. The author’s purpose is not to propose particular boundaries, either with respect to reproductive decisions by HIV-infected women or for other clinical choices. Rather, he attempts to shed some light on what drives our disputes about whether one or another influence method is compatible with autonomous choice.

The author argues that such disagreements reflect underlying conflicts between normative commitments, and that resolving these conflicts is essential to settling controversies over whether particular influences unduly interfere with autonomous choice. Alternative understandings of the prerequisites for autonomous …

Toolibin Catchment Revegetation Manual, Avril Baxter Jan 1996

Toolibin Catchment Revegetation Manual, Avril Baxter

Natural resources published reports

In1983, heavy winter rains resulted in severe inundation and flooding of the lower parts of the Toolibin catchment. The damage to crops and pastures was immense and costly. Local farmers realised that they needed to work together to minimise the impact of heavy rainfall events on their farm productivity.

At the same time the Western Australian Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) was concerned about the quality of both ground and surface water in the catchment area for Toolibin Lake, the last remaining wooded freshwater lake in the southern wheatbelt. This mutual interest led to the formation of the …

(En)Gendering Romanticism: A Study Of Charlotte Bronte's Novels, Ariella Bechhofer Brown Jan 1996

(En)Gendering Romanticism: A Study Of Charlotte Bronte's Novels, Ariella Bechhofer Brown

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Through her writing, Charlotte Bronte takes issue both with the masculinist assumption of Romanticism and the limitations of the conventional woman's novel. Bronte was drawn to Romanticism for its elevation of subjectivity, the poet's creative imagination, and emotional intensity, as well as its representation of the questing spirit in pursuit of self-definition and transcendence. She also appreciated the Romantics' recognition of the limits of expression and the fields of interpretation opened up by the lack of fixity which is emphasized by Romantic irony. Yet, writing as a Romantic also presented an obstacle to Bronte as a woman writer, for the …

Understanding The Folk Islam Of The Dagbani-Speaking People: A Prerequisite To Evangelism In North Ghana, Sampson Kenneth Twumasi Jan 1996

Understanding The Folk Islam Of The Dagbani-Speaking People: A Prerequisite To Evangelism In North Ghana, Sampson Kenneth Twumasi

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. At the beginning of this century Islam was confined to some geographical areas in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Dr. Samuel Zwemer in his writings claimed that Islam was a dying religion because it had within it “the germs of death." This claim is no longer valid as Islam has experienced a resurgence and grown proportionately well in other parts of the world. Islam, along with animism, has gained roots in Africa, especially in North and West Africa. Both religions have grown tremendously among some of the people groups in North Ghana where Islam is mixed with hundreds of superstitions …

New Age Holistic Health: Implications For Seventh-Day Adventist Faith And Practice, Manuel Vasquez Jan 1996

New Age Holistic Health: Implications For Seventh-Day Adventist Faith And Practice, Manuel Vasquez

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Alternative New Age holistic health therapies can be physically and spiritually dangerous for Seventh-day Adventist Christians because these therapies are based on nonbiblical worldview philosophies, universal energy forces, astrology, the occult, and Eastern mysticism.

Method. Primary and secondary New Age holistic health sources, as well as the Bible, the writings of Ellen G. White and other Christian writers were researched. Interviews were conducted with Chinese acupuncturists and New Age holistic health practitioners. The intent was to discover the roots of New Age holistic health therapies and practices and the sources that the recent New Age holistic pioneers drew from …

A Cellular Model For Automatic Transport Systems., Yang Cai Jan 1996

A Cellular Model For Automatic Transport Systems., Yang Cai

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this study, the Transit Automata (TA) model, a Cellular Automata (CA) based spatial model, has been developed. It includes a set of cells, states, rules, events, and a system clock. In contrast to CA, a TA model fragments the problem space along restricted routes. All cells on the routes are treated as equal and controlled by rules. Like CA models, an initial configuration of a TA model can be embedded and can be dynamically changed during the runtime. Furthermore, user-controlled events and stochastic events are used to trigger the discrete events of the model. A TA model is a …

Intensity Of Systemic Alarms In Content-Specific Fear Conditioning Comparing 20 Percent Vs. 13 Percent Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air As Ucss., John Patrick Forsyth Jan 1996

Intensity Of Systemic Alarms In Content-Specific Fear Conditioning Comparing 20 Percent Vs. 13 Percent Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air As Ucss., John Patrick Forsyth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To examine the relation between the intensity of systemic bodily events and content-specific fear conditioning to stimuli that are fear-relevant or prepared for such associations, the present study involved a direct comparison between the conditioning effects produced by 20% and 13% CO{dollar}\\sb2{dollar}-enriched air (UCSs) to three CS types: external fear-relevant (snake moving toward viewer), internal fear-irrelevant (human heart beating arrhythmically), or neutral control (flowers swaying in the wind). Sex-balanced groups of undergraduate participants (N = 96) were assigned to one of the three CSs, and within each CS, to either 20% or 13% CO{dollar}\\sb2{dollar}-enriched air (UCSs). A variety of autonomic …

Development And Assessment Of A Standard Dissolution Methodology For Protein-Based Injectable Suspensions., Sunil Prabhu Jan 1996

Development And Assessment Of A Standard Dissolution Methodology For Protein-Based Injectable Suspensions., Sunil Prabhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To date, no standard dissolution methodology is recognized in the official compendia for protein-based injectable suspensions. Development of a sensitive dissolution method would have utility as an in vitro quality control tool and an indicator of associated in vivo product performance. Using the spin-filter as the dissolution device of choice, the objective of these studies was to develop a standard dissolution methodology for protein-based suspensions. Secondarily, the objective was to elucidate the steps which critically influence ion-complexed protein dissolution, and assess the magnitude of their effect. In Phase I of dissolution methodology development, studies of the device hydrodynamics concluded that …

Analysis Of Regulatory Regions Within The First Intron Of The Estrogen-Inducible Chicken Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Franklin David Shuler Jan 1996

Analysis Of Regulatory Regions Within The First Intron Of The Estrogen-Inducible Chicken Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Franklin David Shuler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During periods of egg laying in the chicken, when circulating levels of estrogen are increased, the liver-specific estrogen-dependent very low density apolipoprotein II (apoVLDL II) gene is expressed. Transcription is accompanied by estrogen-dependent, liver-specific changes in the chromatin conformation within and surrounding the gene. One of the regions that changes in conformation is in the promoter where the estrogen receptor along with multiple liver-specific and ubiquitous transcription factors interact in a cooperative manner to assemble a functional transcriptional initiation complex. However, the apoVLDL II gene is expressed at higher levels when the first intron is added to the promoter. Since …

The Role Of The Pastor In Lay Development In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Papua New Guinea, Aaron M. Lopa Jan 1996

The Role Of The Pastor In Lay Development In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Papua New Guinea, Aaron M. Lopa

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Statement of the Problem

The task of this study was to rethink the role of pastors as shepherd-equippers of lay leaders in view of the explosive growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Papua New Guinea.

Method

The dissertation has two parts. Part One covers: (1) institutional factors which provided the background for this study, (2) biblical and theological dimensions as the basis for the new pastoral paradigm in PNG, and (3) cultural and sociological factors as means to understand the local cultures in order to contextualize ministry to make it more relevant to the people. Part Two synthesizes the …

A Christian Response To Zambian Death Rituals, Cornelius Mulenga Matandiko Jan 1996

A Christian Response To Zambian Death Rituals, Cornelius Mulenga Matandiko

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Adventist Christians in Zambia wrestle with the tension between elements of their traditional religion and Western Christianity. Many of them, fearing spirits of the dead, participate in traditional funeral practices aimed at protecting them from spirit attacks. This presents a problem because many of these practices are contrary to what the Bible proclaims.

Method

In this study, a traditional understanding of death and death rituals is developed. This is followed by a biblical understanding of death and death rituals. An analysis and evaluation of cultural views in the light of the Bible teachings on death, death rituals, and spirits …

Footwashing As A Means Of Reconciliation With God And Man, Ronald G. Schmidt Jan 1996

Footwashing As A Means Of Reconciliation With God And Man, Ronald G. Schmidt

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Presently there are seven major interpretations of the footwashing recorded in the Gospel of John 13. This study attempts to discover the true meaning and function of footwashing that is in harmony with Johannine theology, Christology, and Sola Scriptura.

Method

This study was conducted in the following fashion. It traced the function and meaning of footwashing in both secular and sacred history throughout the Bible, as well as Jewish and Greco-Roman history. In particular it focuses on the setting of footwashing in the Gospel of John, and the practice and meaning of footwashing in Church history, with emphasis on …
