The Virtuous Personality Of Blessed Frederick Ozanam, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Apr 1996

The Virtuous Personality Of Blessed Frederick Ozanam, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Frédéric Ozanam’s life is examined to illustrate his many virtues. Among these were “sensitive charity, practical wisdom, care for the truth, [and] love of family.” This study divides his life into three phases: his education and formation, his legal career, and his definitive vocation. The section on Ozanam’s education and formation gives information on his early family life and how he came to be influenced by Vincent de Paul, which has not appeared in as much detail in previous Vincentian Heritage articles on him.

Fusing Economic And Environmental Policy: The Need For Framework Laws In The United States And Argentina, John R. Nolon Apr 1996

Fusing Economic And Environmental Policy: The Need For Framework Laws In The United States And Argentina, John R. Nolon

Pace Environmental Law Review

In response to the accords reached at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and to international economic pressures, the Argentine Constitution was amended in 1994. Article 41 of the Argentine Constitution now provides the people of Argentina with a right to a healthy environment. It adopts the international definition of sustainable development as a means of protecting this environmental right, noting that the country's productive activities should satisfy present needs without compromising the needs of future generations. Resource use and conservation - production and protection - are fused in this new constitutional prescription. The Argentine congress is …

Improved Conversion Of Plant Oils And Animal Fats Into Biodiesel And Co-Product , Praveen R. Muniyappa, Scott C. Brammer, Hossein Noureddini

Papers in Biomaterials

Increased environmental awareness and depletion of resources are driving to develop alternative fuel from renewable resources that are environmentally more acceptable. Esters of fatty acids (bio-diesel, derived from the transesterification vegetable oils, have properties similar to components of peh-oleior~. based diesel fuel Cost has been a major factor slowing the commercializatio of bio-diesel! Glycerol is the coproduct of the esterification process. In this work the feasibility of the glyc-erol of vegetable oil. with crude glycerol derived from the transesterification of the vegetable oils and animal fats was studied. Utilization of the crude co-product of the biodiesel process was investi-gated for …

The Role Of Nitric Oxide In The Modulation Of The Leukocyte-Endothelial Cell Interactions During Ischemia And Reperfusion, Fernando López-Neblina Apr 1996

The Role Of Nitric Oxide In The Modulation Of The Leukocyte-Endothelial Cell Interactions During Ischemia And Reperfusion, Fernando López-Neblina

Masters Theses

Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in several metabolic pathways and physiological phenomena. The role of NO in inflammation after ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is controversial. The early phases of inflammation include the leukocyte-endothelial (L/EC) cell interactions which have been divided in rolling, activation, adhesion and migration.

The first experiment was to demonstrate the role of NO in a model of renal I/R. We demonstrated that exogenous NO improves survival and renal function tests after renal I/R, while endogenous NO does not appear to be an important contributor to renal I/R. We also demonstrated that NO modulate the infiltration of neutrophils …

Individual Rationality, Hazard Warnings, And The Foundations Of Tort Law, W. Kip Viscusi Apr 1996

Individual Rationality, Hazard Warnings, And The Foundations Of Tort Law, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

If all people were fully rational and cognizant of all the risks they faced, then they would always select an efficient level of safety in all their activities and other choices. Thus people would trade off the potential benefits of the risky behavior against the costs, including the risks to life and limb, and select the activity and product mix that best promoted their welfare. In such a world, there would not only be no need for hazard warnings, but there also would be no need for liability of any kind. Purchasers of hazardous products, for example, would always value …

Teaching Animal Agriculture To Young Children, James W. Smith, Joe W. West Apr 1996

Teaching Animal Agriculture To Young Children, James W. Smith, Joe W. West

Journal of Extension

Two educational programs in Georgia expose children to factual information about animal agriculture. Over 5,000 students have participated in the Animal Science First Grade Field Day. Nine different on farm demonstrations are conducted over a three hour period. All children receive classroom instruction prior to the field day. A dairy display and educational program is presented annually at the Georgia National Fair. A tent next to the milking parlor houses the exhibit and provides seating. Children listen to a 15-minute presentation by an extension dairy specialist on the topic of why the dairy cow is our friend. Comments and requests …
