Political Correctness Askew: Excesses In The Pursuit Of Minds And Manners, Kenneth Lasson Apr 1996

Political Correctness Askew: Excesses In The Pursuit Of Minds And Manners, Kenneth Lasson

All Faculty Scholarship

Political Correctness, n., the avoidance of forms of expression or action that exclude, marginalise or insult racial and cultural minorities.
- Oxford English Dictionary (9th Edition)

All I want of you is a little seevility, and that of the commonest goddamnedest kind.
- Z. W. Pease, The History of New Bedford (1918)

Forgive us all our peccadilloes.

With the fullness of time, when all has been said and done in both the heat of the moment and the cooler perspective of experience, what has come to be called "Political Correctness" will be revealed as little more than passionate folly-merely another …

Perspectives On Missouri V. Jenkins: Abandoning The Unfinished Business Of Public School Desegregation 'With All Deliberate Speed', José F. Anderson Apr 1996

Perspectives On Missouri V. Jenkins: Abandoning The Unfinished Business Of Public School Desegregation 'With All Deliberate Speed', José F. Anderson

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay examines the continuing struggle that centers around whether this country will allow public elementary and secondary school officials to use race-conscious, and sometimes aggressive, tools to eliminate the continuing presence of predominantly single race schools in most of our urban centers. Despite the promise of Brown v. Board of Education, the efforts to desegregate schools in some areas of America appear to have eliminated only the legal barriers to truly integrated schools. Many school systems have simply resegregated through demographic shifts prompted by urban decay and "white flight." In Missouri v. Jenkins, the Supreme Court struck down certain …

Against The Communitarian Republic, Chandran Kukathas Apr 1996

Against The Communitarian Republic, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Communitarianism has risen to prominence in recent debates in political philosophy largely on the strength of its criticisms of liberalism. Among its more important criticisms is the charge that liberal political thinking does not properly appreciate the value of community. At a deeper level, communitarian ism asserts that liberalism is infected by confusions about the nature of community, thinking?mistakenly?that it is no more than an associa tion of separate, isolated, 'atomistic' individuals. Communitarians thus advance not only certain claims about value but also other claims about how the human world should be understood.

An "Earthly Paradise": William Morris's Later Prose Romances, Carolyn Adele Gardner Apr 1996

An "Earthly Paradise": William Morris's Later Prose Romances, Carolyn Adele Gardner

English Theses & Dissertations

William Norris, prominent Pre-Raphaelite poet and early Socialist thinker, devoted the final six years of his life not to poetry or Socialism, but to the creation of a new literary genre, the prose romance. Following the initial publication of the later prose romances between 1890-1896, few critics have attempted to analyze Norris's last works; moreover, those who have done so, have generally either dismissed the romances as escapist fantasies or twisted the narratives of these romances in an attempt to demonstrate the presence of Marxist allegories thought to accord with Norris's Socialism. Yet Norris's later prose romances, uniting his philosophies …

The Evaluation Of Succinylcholine Chloride For Harmful Effects Upon Early-Stage Mouse Embryos, Francis Warren Prescott Apr 1996

The Evaluation Of Succinylcholine Chloride For Harmful Effects Upon Early-Stage Mouse Embryos, Francis Warren Prescott

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Succinylcholine (SCh) chloride is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used to paralyze patients for surgical procedures. Over 1,800 clinical observations of newborn infants have demonstrated that succinylcholine does not cross the placenta in quantities detrimental to fetuses (Kolstad, et al., 1957, Bakhoum, et al., 1957, Hodges, et al., 1959, Duffield, et al., 1958, Dennis, et al., 1954, 1956, McNab, 1955, Coleman, et al., 1956, Lund, 1953). Later investigations which involved comparison of blood levels of SCh in the mother to those in fetuses bolstered the finding that SCh fails to cross the placenta in significant amounts (Moya and Kvisselgaard, 1961, …

Sensitivity Analysis And Optimization Of Aerodynamic Configurations With Blend Surfaces, Almuttil Mathew Thomas Apr 1996

Sensitivity Analysis And Optimization Of Aerodynamic Configurations With Blend Surfaces, Almuttil Mathew Thomas

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A novel (geometrical) parametrization procedure using solutions to a suitably chosen fourth order partial differential equation is used to define a class of airplane configurations. Inclusive in this definition are surface grids, volume grids, and grid sensitivity. The general airplane configuration has wing, fuselage, vertical tail and horizontal tail. The design variables are incorporated into the boundary conditions, and the solution is expressed as a Fourier series. The fuselage has circular cross section, and the radius is an algebraic function of four design parameters and an independent computational variable. Volume grids are obtained through an application of the Control Point …

The Creation And Destruction Of Surrogate Worlds In Montana Literature, Julie Lyn Mcmurray Apr 1996

The Creation And Destruction Of Surrogate Worlds In Montana Literature, Julie Lyn Mcmurray

English Theses & Dissertations

Montana writers create surrogate worlds where their characters escape the oppressiveness of the real world. The vast and varied landscape of Montana is more than a setting for many of these authors. It becomes symbolic of a national mind set that the open land will offer redemption or inner peace. Therefore, many characters become one with their natural environment. However, the writers destroy their alternative worlds by introducing emotion or real world problems into it.

Four Montana writers will be examined in detail. In Chapter II, I discuss Myron Brinig's Wide Open Town and his use of surrogate worlds. Brinig …

Correlates Of The Mmpi-A Immaturity (Imm) Scale In An Adolescent Psychiatric Population, Eric Albert Imhof Apr 1996

Correlates Of The Mmpi-A Immaturity (Imm) Scale In An Adolescent Psychiatric Population, Eric Albert Imhof

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Despite numerous theories of adolescent ego development, there is no objective measure of ego development or maturation targeted for the assessment of adolescents. The Immaturity (IMM) Scale developed for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - Adolescent (MMPI-A) was designed to fill this void in adolescent assessment. The present study examined the concurrent validity of the IMM Scale based on sixty-six adolescents (13-18 years old) in an inpatient setting using four prominent measures of maturity, i.e., The Defining Issues Test (DIT), the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT), the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status - Second Revision (EOM-EIS-2), and …

Recruitment Of Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Postlarvae To The Back-Barrier Lagoons Of Virginia's Eastern Shore, Robert D. Brumbaugh Apr 1996

Recruitment Of Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Postlarvae To The Back-Barrier Lagoons Of Virginia's Eastern Shore, Robert D. Brumbaugh

OES Theses and Dissertations

Most research on the early life history of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, has been conducted in large partially stratified estuaries such as the Chesapeake Bay. In contrast, little is known about the recruitment dynamics or habitat requirements of blue crab postlarvae (megalopae) in shallow well-mixed lagoonal systems that make up a considerable part of the species' range. In Virginia's coastal lagoons, planktonic blue crab megalopae are most abundant at night on flooding tides, and are not abundant during the daytime or on ebbing tides. This appears to enhance retention within the lagoons, despite the short residence time of water …

Seasonal And Mesoscale Variability In The Distribution Of Antarctic Krill, Euphausia Superba, West Of The Antarctic Peninsula, Cathy Meyer Lascara Apr 1996

Seasonal And Mesoscale Variability In The Distribution Of Antarctic Krill, Euphausia Superba, West Of The Antarctic Peninsula, Cathy Meyer Lascara

OES Theses and Dissertations

Observations collected between November 1991 and September 1993 during four multidisciplinary cruises were analyzed to provide a description of seasonal and mesoscale variability in the distribution and abundance of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, within continental shelf waters west of the Antarctic Peninsula and to investigate possible relationships between variability in krill distributions and variability in selected environmental parameters. Acoustic measurements of krill were made each season at designated locations to estimate the abundance of krill, in terms of vertically-integrated krill biomass and the number of aggregations, characterize the depth distribution of krill, and provide a quantitative description of the size, …

The Assessment Of Osteoinductivity Of Human Allograft Demineralized Bone Matrix By In Vivo And In Vitro Assay Models, Min Zhang Apr 1996

The Assessment Of Osteoinductivity Of Human Allograft Demineralized Bone Matrix By In Vivo And In Vitro Assay Models, Min Zhang

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The osteoinductive potential (osteoinductivity) is a very important aspect of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) as a biomaterial. This study is directed at establishing qualitative and quantitative assays of the osteoinductivity of human DBM. Further aspects of this study include an assessment of the effects of the production process, matrix characterization, and donor related factors on osteoinductivity of the DBM.

Athymic mice were chosen as the animal model for use in the in vivo bioassay. Implantation of DBM in muscle pouches provided for much higher osteoinductivity (remineralization to 10% calcium) than subcutaneous site implantation (remineralization to 1.6% calcium). Histological observations revealed …

Animal-Word And Sound Test: An Auditory Cognitive Interference Effect, Jason L. Parker

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study presented a method in which the Stroop Color Word Test can be adapted to an auditory form. This auditory test used a series of animal words, animal sounds and word-sound combinations. This "Animal-Word-and-Sound test" contained three subtests. The test tasks were to repeat a list of words, identify a list of animal sounds, and to identify the sound in a combined animal word-sound pairings (Both the animal's name and sound are presented simultaneously). An alternate form of this audio test was examined. The alternate form followed the same construction except in the final condition, the task was to …

Volatility Risk Premiums In Futures Markets: Investment Prices And Commercial Bank Performance, Richard P. Gregory Apr 1996

Volatility Risk Premiums In Futures Markets: Investment Prices And Commercial Bank Performance, Richard P. Gregory

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation is an in depth study of the measurement of pricing biases in futures options, and whether this bias is due to volatility risk premia, market overreaction to public information or information asymmetry. Futures options for thirteen different contracts are used. Additionally, the contracts are from three different marketplaces.

Six hypotheses are tested. The first is whether implied option volatilities from the Black (1976) futures option model is the only significant determinant of the volatility processes of the underlying futures contracts. For this estimation, we use both a GARCH (1,1) model and the Partially Non-parametric model of Engle and …

An Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For The Detection Of Cardiac Myoglobin Using Monoclonal Antibodies, Deborah F. Kelly Apr 1996

An Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For The Detection Of Cardiac Myoglobin Using Monoclonal Antibodies, Deborah F. Kelly

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The most prevalent life-threatening disease worldwide, secondary to coronary artery thrombosis is Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). Increases in three clinical markers have been explored as an early means of AMI detection: Cardiac myoglobin, and the two specific cardiac isoforms of Creatine Kinase, CK-MM and CK-MB. However, myoglobin levels have shown to give a more accurate correlation (R = 0.89) than does Creatine Kinase evaluation. Therefore, we have developed a two-site Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) using monoclonal antibodies against myoglobin isolated from human heart tissue. This assay is based on specific anti-genantibody interactions and is sensitive at the nanogram level. We …

Comparison Of Sapling Community Structure In Created And Natural Forested Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Sharon Ann Haines Apr 1996

Comparison Of Sapling Community Structure In Created And Natural Forested Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Sharon Ann Haines

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Forested wetlands are being destroyed at a rapid rate. Wetlands are valuable for flood control, aquifer recharge, and for their role in denitrification and storage of global carbon. When wetlands are lost, their functions and value to humans are lost as well. One response to the continued development of wetlands has been the artificial creation of new wetlands. This study compared the species density, relative density, coverage and frequency of occurrence of the woody vegetation in two southeastern Virginia created wetlands with that in two reference wetlands, also in southeastern Virginia, to determine the structural similarity of their respective communities. …

Relationship Between Design Marketing Strategies And Toothbrush Purchases By Consumers, Cynthia Lynn Garvin Apr 1996

Relationship Between Design Marketing Strategies And Toothbrush Purchases By Consumers, Cynthia Lynn Garvin

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between design marketing strategies of toothbrushes (handle size, color, and shape; brush head size and shape; and bristle firmness and formation of toothbrushes) and toothbrush purchases made by consumers. To understand what consumers preferred, a self-designed, 24 item questionnaire, "Toothbrush Design and Consumer Preferences," was given to a convenience sample of 300 subjects ranging from ages 20 to 60 and over from the Old Dominion University campus in Norfolk, Virginia. Responses from each item were analyzed using frequency and percentages of responses, contingency tables, Kendall's tau b, and …

Wittgenstein On Freedom Of The Will, Grant Allen Marler Apr 1996

Wittgenstein On Freedom Of The Will, Grant Allen Marler

Institute for the Humanities Theses

This thesis is an exposition and clarification of two lectures on freedom of the will delivered by Ludwig Wittgenstein in 1939. Wittgenstein asks whether it makes sense to say that the "decision of a person was not free because it was determined by natural laws." I offer a brief explanation and defense of Wittgenstein's method of linguistic analysis, then proceed in its spirit. Associated with the words 'determined' and 'free' are certain pictures which, if misapplied, may lead us to misjudge their function. Among these are the picture of natural laws as "rails" that compel events, and that the meaning …

Radioimmunoassay Analysis Of Testosterone Levels In Clutches Of House Wrens (Troglodytes Aedon) Egg Yolks, Kimberly A. Fryzel '96 Apr 1996

Radioimmunoassay Analysis Of Testosterone Levels In Clutches Of House Wrens (Troglodytes Aedon) Egg Yolks, Kimberly A. Fryzel '96

Honors Projects

Recent evidence indicates that variation in intensity of aggressiveness and competitive ability among nestlings of a clutch may be attributed, at least partly, to differences in maternally deposited yolk testosterone that affects embryonic development (Schwabl 1993). We developed a radioimmunoassay (RIA) for measuring yolk testosterone levels in house wren (Troglodytes aedon) eggs. This procedure was used in initial studies to determine whether yolk testosterone varies within a clutch of house wren eggs. The analysis revealed the presence of higher levels of testosterone in yolks of eggs laid later in the clutch sequence. Because later laid eggs tend to hatch later …

Whither Haiti?, Donald E. Schulz Dr. Apr 1996

Whither Haiti?, Donald E. Schulz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Dr. Donald E. Schulz looks at the prospects for political stability, democratization, and socioeconomic development. His conclusions are sobering. While by no means dismissing the possibility that Haiti can "make it," he presents a portrait of the imposing obstacles that must still be overcome and a detailed discussion of the things that could go wrong. In a nutshell, he argues that without a much greater willingness on the part of the United States and the international community to "stay the course" in terms of providing long-term security and socioeconomic aid, Haiti is unlikely to make a successful transition to a …

Deterring Irresponsible Use And Disposal Of Toxic Substances: The Case For Legislative Recognition Of Increased Risk Causes Of Action, Tamsen D. Love Apr 1996

Deterring Irresponsible Use And Disposal Of Toxic Substances: The Case For Legislative Recognition Of Increased Risk Causes Of Action, Tamsen D. Love

Vanderbilt Law Review

Increasing risk does not ordinarily result in tort liability. For instance, every speeding driver increases the risk of a traffic accident.' Tort liability, however, attaches only if the driver actually causes an accident, This means that of two reckless drivers who engage in exactly the same risky behavior, one might face great liability, while the other might escape with no liability at all. The difference between the two cases is in many ways a mere fortuity-whether timing and circumstance conspire to cause a traffic accident in a particular case or not. Many acts of reckless driving go unanswered in tort …

A Tandem Duplication Within The Fibrillin 1 Gene Is Associated With The Mouse Tight Skin Mutation., Linda D. Siracusa, Rodney Mcgrath, Qing Ma, John J. Moskow, Jayanthi Manne, Paul J. Christner, Arthur M. Buchberg, Sergio A. Jimenez Apr 1996

A Tandem Duplication Within The Fibrillin 1 Gene Is Associated With The Mouse Tight Skin Mutation., Linda D. Siracusa, Rodney Mcgrath, Qing Ma, John J. Moskow, Jayanthi Manne, Paul J. Christner, Arthur M. Buchberg, Sergio A. Jimenez

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Mice carrying the Tight skin (Tsk) mutation have thickened skin and visceral fibrosis resulting from an accumulation of extracellular matrix molecules. These and other connective tissue abnormalities have made Tskl + mice models for scleroderma, hereditary emphysema, and myocardial hypertrophy. Previously we localized Tsk to mouse chromosome 2 in a region syntenic with human chromosome 15. The microfibrillar glycoprotein gene, fibrillin 1 (FBN1), on human chromosome 15q, provided a candidate for the Tsk mutation. We now demonstrate that the Tsk chromosome harbors a 30- to 40-kb genomic duplication within the Fbn1 gene that results in a larger than normal in-frame …

The Institution Of An Equipping Ministry Utilizing Spiritual Gifts To Overcome The Pastor/Laity Dichotomy, Mark Alan Harris Apr 1996

The Institution Of An Equipping Ministry Utilizing Spiritual Gifts To Overcome The Pastor/Laity Dichotomy, Mark Alan Harris

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to research and develop an equipping ministry based on the doctrine of the priesthood of the believer emphasizing spiritual gifts. A 27-item Lay Ministry Survey was completed by 99 men and women at four North Carolina churches. Findings indicate that 43 percent of the respondents believe ministry should be performed by professional pastors. Research reveals that the professional pastor and laity have received a call to serve God by spiritual gifts. The church's responsibility is to affirm the call of believers to serve God through their spiritual gifts.
