Traditional Mural Arts Of Sirigu: Forms. Symbolism, And Processes, Christine A. Cowhey

African Diaspora ISPs

This report studies the art of mural decorating that has been passed down through many generations of women in certain villages in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It identifies the common patterns that traditionally characterize these decorations, and explores how they function as a symbolic language in the communities in which they appear. Among the variety of surface decorations found throughout the Upper East Region, my research focuses on the traditional mural decorations of the village of Sirigu. These decorations are characterized by materials and common forms that represent objects of common use and visibility in the daily lives …

Professional Dance In Ghanaian Society:The Development And Direction Of The Ghana Dance Ensemble, Krista N. Fabian Apr 1996

Professional Dance In Ghanaian Society:The Development And Direction Of The Ghana Dance Ensemble, Krista N. Fabian

African Diaspora ISPs

In 1962, the Ghana Dance Ensemble, the National Dance Company of Ghana, was started as an experiment between Ghana's educational and governmental systems, aiming to pro-Ghanaian culture and national unity. By preserving traditional music and dance through contemporary, theatrical and creative presentation, the Ensemble has been a driving cultural force in Ghana for over 30 years. Yet presenting the traditional performing arts in these new ways brings new challenges to the choreographers and dancers. This is their story a project about the company, those who began it and those who, with their energy and dedication, continue the tradition.

Canoe Decoration And Meaning Among The Fante Of Cape Coast, Allison W. Gray Apr 1996

Canoe Decoration And Meaning Among The Fante Of Cape Coast, Allison W. Gray

African Diaspora ISPs

Ghanaian culture is composed of an endless number of different aspects, all of which are intertwined to the extent that one can hardly decipher between them. During my studies at my home university, I came to discover that it is often impossible to separate African art and African religion, visual art and performing art, and even religion from politics in Africa. Upon arriving in Ghana, I found this to be true and realized just how hard it is to separate these entities, in their complex system of overlap. I chose to study the fishing canoes because I wanted to study …

Medical Waste, A Loaded Gun On The Verge Of Firing: United States V. Plaza Health Laboratories, Inc., Ann M. Babigian

Pace Environmental Law Review

This Case Note examines United States v. Plaza Health, a Court of Appeals decision from the Second Circuit, in which the court held that, in the criminal context, a person is not a point source under the Clean Water Act by virtue of the rule of lenity. The author asserts that the court should have found a person to be a point source and elevated the individual’s punishment to a criminal violation under the Clean Water Act's knowing endangerment provision. In holding that a person is not a point source, the court did not follow precedents by failing to extend …

The Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of Morphine And U-50,488h In A Three-Key Assay: A Mu And Kappa Opioid Discrimination In The Pigeon, Malath Makhay Apr 1996

The Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of Morphine And U-50,488h In A Three-Key Assay: A Mu And Kappa Opioid Discrimination In The Pigeon, Malath Makhay

Dissertations

Opiate drugs have been classified in two-choice assays according to their ability to produce generalization in animals to the prototypicix opiate, morphine, versus vehicle, or to the k opioid, U -50,488H versus vehicle injections (Picker & Dykstra, 1987). A three-choice discrimination procedure, in which subjects discriminate among morphine, U -50,488H , and vehicle injections, might afford a greater degree of precision in characterizing the subjective effects of opioids. The feasibility of such a procedure was demonstrated in the present study, in which five pigeons were trained to discriminate among injections of 5 .6 m g/kg morphinel 5 .6 m g/kg …

Effects Of Insulin And Insulin-Mimetics On Mrna Levels Of C-Fos And C-Jun In Primary Rat Hepatocytes In Culture, Guangmin Li

Masters Theses

Insulin is capable of regulating cellular and metabolic processes as well as gene expression. Selenate and vanadate are two compounds that have been found to mimic the action of insulin in several tissue and cell types. cFos and cJun are the products of immediate early responsive genes c-fos and c-jun. They are members of the family of the AP-1 (Activator Protein-1) transcription factors. AP-1 transcription factors bind as cJun.cJun homodimer or cJun.cFos heterodimer to the TRE found in the promoter regions of several genes. AP-1 is characterized by its ability to alter gene expression in response to various peptide …

The Barriers Present In More Developed Countries And Less Developed Countries Slowing The Implementation Of Substainability, Luke Giovine Apr 1996

The Barriers Present In More Developed Countries And Less Developed Countries Slowing The Implementation Of Substainability, Luke Giovine

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In 1996 the natural resource base of the world is being depleted at a rate far below the sustainable level. This is very evident in less developed countries (IDC), where raw limited natural resources are being poorly utilized and/or exported to more developed countries (MDC). The More Developed Countries such as the United States, Japan, and Germany use a high amount of natural resources and energy to maintain their material Standard Of Living (SOL), and this is at rates above what their own country can sustain with its own natural resources within its own borders. Both MDC's and LDC's are …

Effects Of D-Amphetamine On Free-Operant Response Acquisition With Immediate And Delayed Reinforcement, Mark G. Lesage Apr 1996

Effects Of D-Amphetamine On Free-Operant Response Acquisition With Immediate And Delayed Reinforcement, Mark G. Lesage

Dissertations

The present study examined in 8-hour sessions the effects of d-amphetamine (1.0, 5.6, and 10 mg/kg) on the acquisition of lever-press responding by rats exposed to procedures in which water delivery was delayed by 0, 8, or 16 seconds relative to the response that produced it. Although neither shaping nor autoshaping occurred, substantial levels of operative-lever responding developed whenever responses produced water. Rats that did not receive water and yoked-control rats that received response-independent water emitted relatively few responses.

The lowest dose (1.0 mg/kg) of d-amphetamine either had no effect on or enhanced rates of operative-lever pressing, whereas …

The Sense Of Justice And The Justice Of Sense: Native Hawaiian Sovereignty And The Second "Trial Of The Century", William H. Rodgers Jr. Apr 1996

The Sense Of Justice And The Justice Of Sense: Native Hawaiian Sovereignty And The Second "Trial Of The Century", William H. Rodgers Jr.

Washington Law Review

In 1993, Congress apologized to the Native Hawaiians for the political funny business of a century ago when the pineapple and sugar interests overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii with tactical help from U.S. officials. Another apology will be in order for an unconscionable political trial now underway in the islands to punish one of the sovereignty leaders, Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele, for a variety of imagined offenses that amount to the infliction of embarrassment on the U.S. To put this essay in context, it should be understood, first of all, that the struggle for Native Hawaiian lands and sovereignty is a …

Dirsig Digital Imaging And Remote Sensing Imaging Generation Model: Infrared Airborne Validation & Input Parameter Analysis, Todd Kraska Apr 1996

Dirsig Digital Imaging And Remote Sensing Imaging Generation Model: Infrared Airborne Validation & Input Parameter Analysis, Todd Kraska

Theses

The civilian and military need for high resolution infrared imagery has dramatically increased in recent times. Regardless of the user or the need, infrared imagery can provide unique information that is not available in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Just as the need for real infrared imagery has increased, so has the need for computer generated infrared imagery, also known as synthetic imagery. Synthetic imagery is created by mathematically modeling the "real world" and the imaging chain, encompassing everything from the target to the sensor characteristics. The amount of faith that can be placed in a synthetic image …

Esperance Region Catchment Planning Strategy, John Platt, Brendan Nicholas, Rod Short, Stephen Gee Apr 1996

Esperance Region Catchment Planning Strategy, John Platt, Brendan Nicholas, Rod Short, Stephen Gee

Natural resources published reports

The Esperance Region Catchment Planning Strategy project was initiated by the Esperance Land Conservation District Committee.

This report provides a reference document for farmers and other land managers such as government agencies and local government, and should help them to strategically focus their catchment planning activities.

It will help land managers to identify the major catchments and land systems in their area, management issues for long term sustainability, and a regional strategy for catchment planning.

Catchment planning involves both technical and social processes.

Technically it is a process of planning the sustainable use of water resources within a catchment.
