The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock Jul 1996

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The environmental degradation caused by beef production is severe. The current literature assesses the ecological damage, but falls short of assigning a per pound dollar amount to reflect the real cost of beef. In the United States, most of the environmental focus has been centered around the use of public lands for grazing and the grazing fee the government considers appropriate. The fee covers the maintenance of the grazing program, which includes maintenance of the actual land. This paper will concentrate on beef-related environmental degradation and select specific damage for monetary valuation.

The Good Or Goodnesses Of Polity And Polities À La Liberalism: Plurality Rather Than Unicity, Singularity Beyond Plurality, Richard E. Flathman Jul 1996

The Good Or Goodnesses Of Polity And Polities À La Liberalism: Plurality Rather Than Unicity, Singularity Beyond Plurality, Richard E. Flathman

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article critiques traditional liberal pluralism, arguing that it often overlooks the importance of singularity—the unique, self-enacted individuality beyond mere diversity. It advocates for a "willful liberalism" that emphasizes individual freedom and the pursuit of self-defined goals, moving beyond both rationalist uniformity and communitarian group identities. This form of liberalism seeks to balance diversity with a deeper appreciation for individual uniqueness, guided by virtues like civility and courage.

The Fda And The Biotechnology Indutry: A Symbiotic Relationship?, Tanya E. Karwaki Jul 1996

The Fda And The Biotechnology Indutry: A Symbiotic Relationship?, Tanya E. Karwaki

Washington Law Review

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory reform has become a controversial, politically charged issue of particular significance to the biotechnology industry. The fundamental factors driving the movement for FDA reform include the prohibitive costs associated with developing a product approved by the FDA and the pressure to participate in the international harmonization of biotechnology product regulations. Two recent Congressional bills, Senator Kassebaum's Food and Drug Administration Performance and Accountability Act of 1995, and Representative Burr's Drug and Biological Products Reform Act of 1996 provide vehicles for analyzing the direction and goals of FDA reform as they apply specifically to the …

Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Confirmation Of An Anterior Protein Pathway In Normal Rabbit Eyes, Nancy H. Kolodny, Thomas F. Freddo, Barbara A. Lawrence, Cristina Suarez, Stephen P. Bartels Jul 1996

Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Confirmation Of An Anterior Protein Pathway In Normal Rabbit Eyes, Nancy H. Kolodny, Thomas F. Freddo, Barbara A. Lawrence, Cristina Suarez, Stephen P. Bartels

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Purpose: Contrast-enhanced proton magnetic resonance imaging ( 1H MRI) has been used as a quantitative, noninvasive method to corroborate a pathway for the diffusion of plasma-derived protein into the aqueous humor in the normal rabbit eye. Methods. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were produced over 1- to 3-hour periods after the intravenous injection of gadolinium diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid. Results. Analysis of the images yielded the time dependence of signal enhancements within the areas of interest. The ciliary body showed an immediate sharp increase, followed by a gradual decrease in signal enhancement with time. Although a gradual increase in signal enhancement was found …

The Role Of The Judiciary In Protecting Individual Rights In The United States, Sandra Day O'Connor Jul 1996

The Role Of The Judiciary In Protecting Individual Rights In The United States, Sandra Day O'Connor

National Law School Journal

The Court's role in the United States as the ultimate protector of constitutional rights did not begin in earnest until after the recognition of the power of judicial review and until after the application of the Bill of Rights to the States. And even then, the Court took a long time finally to live up to its assigned role. In a genuine constitutional democracy, courts play a special role. Based on a good faith belief of what the Constitution requires, courts can - and must - act in individual cases to protect individual rights. And is so doing, they not …

The best hope for improving the resolution of disputes concerning disclosing research is for lawyers to present the research and litigation issues clearly and for courts to develop a "keener sense" for the area of expertise involved.

Molecular Phylogeny And Typing Of Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) That Serve As Vectors Of Human Or Bovine Onchocerciasis, Jianming Tang, Kenneth Pruess, Eddie W. Cupp, Thomas R. Unnasch Jul 1996

Molecular Phylogeny And Typing Of Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) That Serve As Vectors Of Human Or Bovine Onchocerciasis, Jianming Tang, Kenneth Pruess, Eddie W. Cupp, Thomas R. Unnasch

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A subregion of the mitochondrial large subunit (16s) rRNA gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from nine species of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) which serve as natural or experimental vectors of human or bovine Onchocerca parasites. PCR products from each species of blackfly were tested by directed heteroduplex analysis (DHDA), and their genotypes established according to diagnostic banding patterns of the heteroduplex products. Three alleles of mitochondrial 16s rRNA were found to exist in members of the Simulium (Edwardsellum) damnosum sensu lato complex from West Africa, and two alleles were found in the Neotropical Simulium (Psilopelmia …

Female Choice In Sage Grouse: The Roles Of Attraction And Active Comparison, Robert M. Gibson Jul 1996

Female Choice In Sage Grouse: The Roles Of Attraction And Active Comparison, Robert M. Gibson

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Previous studies of female choice in sage grouse Centrocercus urophasianus have implicated both the acoustic quality and repetition rate of the stereotyped strut display as putative cues for female choice. Stages in the choice process at which specific components of male courtship display influence female decisions were investigated using field observations of female premating behavior. Females visited a subset of territorial males and then actively chose one of these as a mate. The order in which males were visited suggested that females searched until an acceptable mate was found, rather than employing a “best-of-n” tactic. Numbers of females visiting a …

Interview: Very Rev. James W. Richardson . . . Confesses!, Jose O. Baylach C.M.

Vincentian Studies

This interview mixes personal, spiritual, and governance questions as it asks James Richardson to reflect on the different phases of his generalate. He describes his view of himself as superior general, his approach to the office, and the way he works. He talks about his feelings and his goals. Most of the answers to the questions are short; Richardson speaks for a comparatively long time on the Daughters of Charity’s relationship to the superior general.

Address To The General Assembly Of The Daughters Of Charity 8 December 1979, James W. Richardson C.M.

Vincentian Studies

When the general assembly of the Daughters of Charity met in 1979, it did so to update itself within the context of the Second Vatican Council. The question was how to do this while remaining faithful to the gospel and the vision of Louise de Marillac and Vincent de Paul. In his address, Superior General James Richardson summarizes the assembly’s business. He identifies some of the conflicts among the Daughters. He uses the founders’ words, exhorting them to resolve the conflicts and make changes while ensuring that they are doing God’s will. Prayer is an important part of this process, …

Eliminated From Eternity: Animal Soul In Nineteenth Century Discourse, Elizabeth Clark George Jul 1996

Eliminated From Eternity: Animal Soul In Nineteenth Century Discourse, Elizabeth Clark George

Dissertations

Environmentalists of the late twentieth century have focused attention on the needs of the natural world and have found support from a broad cross-section of society. A less-than-enthusiastic voice, however, comes from the evangelical wing of Christianity, which is in turn accused of being at best disinterested, at worst exploitive. To probe the origins of this antipathy with hope of dispelling unnecessary accusations was the initial stimulus for the present study. Research is centered on the idea of animal immortality, a concept that has interesting ramifications for both environmentalists and evangelicals.

In the western world, historical background for belief in …

The Metabolic Role Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Enterocytes., Sherry A. Wuensch Jul 1996

The Metabolic Role Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Enterocytes., Sherry A. Wuensch

Theses and Dissertations

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is a key gluconeogenic enzyme. In gluconeogenic tissues, cytosolic PEPCK is essential for glucose formation whereas no metabolic role is defined for mitochondrial PEPCK. Large amounts of PEPCK activity are present in the mucosa of small intestine from rabbits although this tissue is not known to be a significant site for gluconeogenesis in adult animals. Thus the intent of the project was to investigate the intracellular distribution and role of PEPCK in rabbit enterocytes from the small intestine.Initially, a procedure was developed to isolate viable enterocytes from the small intestine of rabbits for use in enzyme and …

King Herod, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel Jul 1996

King Herod, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel

BYU Studies

Herod visited Masada, a Hasmonean mountain stronghold situated near the Dead Sea, on at least two occasions before he began his remarkable career as king of the Jews. Popularly known today as Herod the Great, Herod eventually became connected with this site when he indelibly placed his architectural mark on its isolated rocky plateau. Standing at an elevation of about thirteen hundred feet above the level of the Dead Sea, the fortress, now called Horvot Mezada (Ruins of Masada), is extremely difficult to access because of its steep and sometimes vertical sides.

After the men had chosen by lot ten of their number who would be their butchers, and when they had laid down beside and thrown their arms around their wives and children who lay waiting, they offered themselves up for the slaughter. —Josephus, Jewish War 7.395 (author's translation)
