The Mixed Constitution After Liberalism, Graham Walker Jul 1996

The Mixed Constitution After Liberalism, Graham Walker

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article proposes a mixed constitution as a solution to the ideological conflict between liberal and illiberal values, particularly in post-communist nations. It argues that a mixed constitution, combining elements of both ideologies, can provide a balanced approach that avoids the extremes of either system, fostering stability and justice.

Lmo's: Treasure Chest Or Pandora's Box, Michael S. Baram Jul 1996

Lmo's: Treasure Chest Or Pandora's Box, Michael S. Baram

Faculty Scholarship

Biotechnology is beginning to trans- A form agriculture across the globe. After thousands of years of traditional plant and animal breeding, and centuries of mechanization and chemical application, genetic research has opened a Pandora's box of living modified organisms (LMOs) designed to improve the productivity and efficiency of commercial agriculture. A multitude of transgenic crops and animals is now being introduced into commerce by biotechnology companies, and b nations are puzzling out how to appropriate the benefits and manage the risks.

American biotechnology companies and agencies are the leading proponents of using LMOs. They claim that two decades of costly …

Rectified Synthesis Of Coupler Driven Four Bar Mechanisms For Two And Three Position Motion Generation, Ramanujam Thiruvenkatachari Jul 1996

Rectified Synthesis Of Coupler Driven Four Bar Mechanisms For Two And Three Position Motion Generation, Ramanujam Thiruvenkatachari

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Four-bar mechanisms are widely used in the industry to solve a variety of motion problems. Till recently, their design was based on fundamental kinematics and brute force techniques, resulting in impractical designs and spurious linkages that failed to perform their desired functions effectively.

Procedures have been developed and implemented to guide the rigid body of crank driven four-bar linkages, through a set of design positions with techniques to avoid their defects. However, the practical applications of linkages used in the industry are coupler driven, with primitive synthesis procedures based on trial and error. The opening and closing of the hood …

Comparison Of Positive Screening And Confimatory Results From Federally Mandated Drug Testing Of Urine, Mary M. Stuck Jul 1996

Comparison Of Positive Screening And Confimatory Results From Federally Mandated Drug Testing Of Urine, Mary M. Stuck

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze the accuracy of FDA approved immunoassays for the detection of drug positive urine samples.

Federal civilian employees are tested under the strict protocol of the Department of Health and Human Services mandatory guidelines for federal workplace drug testing programs. The guidelines provide for a two instrument testing protocol for the analysis of urine samples. The first is an FDA approved immunoassay. Samples which test positive on this screening immunoassay are then submitted for confirmatory testing with the "gold standard" gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Agency monthly drug testing summaries, required under the DHHS guidelines …

Neuronal Toxicity Of Humoral Factors From Patients With Diabetic Neuropathy And Mechanism Of Neuronal Death On Cultured Adrenergic Neurons: Studies Of Autoimmune Pathogenesis In Diabetic Neuropathy, Dong Liu Jul 1996

Neuronal Toxicity Of Humoral Factors From Patients With Diabetic Neuropathy And Mechanism Of Neuronal Death On Cultured Adrenergic Neurons: Studies Of Autoimmune Pathogenesis In Diabetic Neuropathy, Dong Liu

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Diabetic neuropathy is an extremely common medical problem because of the high frequency of diabetes and its complications. Diabetic neuropathy consists of not one, but many patterns of nerve injury, each potentially with its own discrete pathogenic mechanisms. Evidence is accumulating that indicates autoimmunity plays a role in diabetic peripheral neuropathy. However, the significance of immunopathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy is as yet unclear.

Using the N1E-115 mouse neuroblastoma cell line (NB) as a model of the adrenergic autonomic neuron, we found that sera of IDDM patients with neuropathy inhibit growth and differentiation of adrenergic neurons in culture (Pittenger et al, …

Lead Activation Of A Developmentally Regulated Calcium Channel In Rat Hippocampal Nerve Terminals, Troy E. Rhodes Jul 1996

Lead Activation Of A Developmentally Regulated Calcium Channel In Rat Hippocampal Nerve Terminals, Troy E. Rhodes

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Low level lead (Pb2+) exposure may produce lasting deficits in learning and memory by altering calcium (Ca2+) dependent processes. Isolated presynaptic nerve terminals from rat hippocampus were loaded with the intracellular (Ca2+) indicator Fura-2. The changes in cytoplasmic free calcium ([Ca2+]i) were measured by stopped-flow fluorescence spectroscopy following depolarization with elevated potassium on a millisecond time scale (Lentzner et al., 1992). Depolarization promoted a rapid increase in Ca2+i which occured in two kinetically distinguishable phases: a fast component, representing the activity of rapidly inactivating Ca2+ channels (τ …

The Role Of Plant Foods Among Native Americans In Seventeenth-Century Virginia An Historical And Botanical Study, Timothy W. Cameron Jul 1996

The Role Of Plant Foods Among Native Americans In Seventeenth-Century Virginia An Historical And Botanical Study, Timothy W. Cameron

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Seventeenth-century Powhatan Indians practiced a subsistence economy utilizing plant resources from both the forest and wetland areas of Virginia to maintain adequate nutrition levels throughout the year. They chose not to depend heavily upon maize agriculture, but instead combined marine and animal resources with wild plants according to the seasonal round. Cultigens such as squash, beans, and maize provided dietary sources for only six months of the year; foraged plant foods made up the difference. Primary plant resources included nuts such as acorns, chestnuts, and hickory and the emergent tubers known as tuckahoe. Secondary plant foods, such as starchy seeds, …

Application Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Creatine Kinase Mm And Bb Isoenzymes For Creatine Kinase Mb Isoenzyme Detection, Lei-Chieh Chuang Jul 1996

Application Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Creatine Kinase Mm And Bb Isoenzymes For Creatine Kinase Mb Isoenzyme Detection, Lei-Chieh Chuang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Nondiagnostic ECGs and unknown characteristic chest pains increase the diIIiculty of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) diagnosis. Biochemical markers, such as creatine kinase MB isoenzymes (CK-MB) and myoglobin, are employed for the early detection of AMI. Compared to myoglobin, CK-MB reveals a higher specific indicator for AMI detection owing to its abundance in cardiac tissue. Hence, a successful CK-MB detection is expected to improve AMI diagnosis and therapy.

A CK-MB detecting ELISA system was set up based on a sandwich assay principle by using specific CK-B and CK-M monoclonal antibodies. The dimeric nature of the CK-MB isoenzyme provides two epitopes on …

Lord Byron's Heroines, Cathy Douglas Rodreguez Jul 1996

Lord Byron's Heroines, Cathy Douglas Rodreguez

English Theses & Dissertations

Byron as a poet, aristocrat, and Romantic, began as all the other poets of his time, in a traditional fashion. But unlike the other poets, Byron began to develop a heroine who would become a voice for the realities of society. Despite the fact that Byron had many love affairs, he also respected women, believing in their right of autonomy within society. He considered them his equal, relishing lively debates with them on many topics. Byron's heroines embodied sentimentalism, integrity, morality and intelligence, which in turn subtlety influenced society to respect a woman's desire to openly express her emotions. What …

The Practice Of Law As Play, Barbara Stark Jul 1996

The Practice Of Law As Play, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Essay first draws on the work of British psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott to define "play" and to describe its function in psychological development. It then explains the intense need for play during law school and the virtual impossibility of satisfying that need. Finally, it describes the happier prospects for play after law school, at least for some. The Essay concludes that, while the practice of law at its best is play, learning what you need to begin practice is not. "Play" rooted in "not-play" is one of the first paradoxes of practice, however, and paradox is what makes practice play.

Microhardness And Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis Of Nd:Yag Laser And Acid Treatment Effects In Dentin, J. M. White, G. L. Adams Jun 1996

Microhardness And Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis Of Nd:Yag Laser And Acid Treatment Effects In Dentin, J. M. White, G. L. Adams

Scanning Microscopy

Laser irradiation at and above parameters producing the modification threshold for dentin causes structural changes to the dentin surface. This study determined the microhardness of dentin before and after laser modification and acid treatment using a repeated-measures de-sign. Seven dentin sections (4 mm in thickness) were cut from freshly extracted non-carious third molars using a diamond saw. The middle occlusal third was used as the test dentin surface. One section served as a control (C); three received laser modification (L) and then acid treatment (L + A); and three received acid (A) and then laser treatment (A + L). Laser …

Scanning Microscopy

Using ethylene glycol (EG) and vitamin D3 as crystal-inducing diet (CID) in rats, we investigated the effect of the dosage of EG on the generation of chronic calcium oxalate (CaOx) nephrolithiasis. We collected weekly 24 hour urines and measured herein the amount of oxalate, calcium, glycosaminoglycans (GAG's), creatinine, protein, alkaline phosphatase (AP), 𝝲-glutamyl transpeptidase (𝝲GT), and N-acetyl-𝝱-glucosaminidase (NAG). The potential of these urines to inhibit crystal growth and agglomeration was also evaluated. After four weeks, the kidneys were screened by histology and radiography for the presence of CaOx crystals and the amount of kidney-associated oxalate was biochemically measured. Using 0.5 …

Settlement And Early Post-Settlement Survival Of Sessile Marine Invertebrates On Topographically Complex Surfaces: The Importance Of Refuge Dimensions And Adult Morphology, Linda J. Walters, David S. Wethey Jun 1996

Settlement And Early Post-Settlement Survival Of Sessile Marine Invertebrates On Topographically Complex Surfaces: The Importance Of Refuge Dimensions And Adult Morphology, Linda J. Walters, David S. Wethey

Faculty Publications

We predicted that both refuge dimension and growth form would influence settlement and short-term post-settlement success (≤7 d) of sessile marine invertebrates that live attached to hard substrata in low energy environments. Individuals with unlimited attachment to the substrata should rapidly be protected by their growth form, thus decreasing their need to settle in refuges and limiting the length of time any locations on heterogeneous substrata act as refuges. Alternatively, organisms with limited attachment to the substrata should remain susceptible to the causes of mortality for a longer time, and as a result should settle in high quality refuges (sites …

Abundant Protein-Containing Particles In The Sea, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam Jun 1996

Abundant Protein-Containing Particles In The Sea, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam

Faculty Publications

The interaction of bacteria with particulate organic matter has implications for organic matter cycling and bacterial ecology in the ocean. Until recently, the focus has been on 'classical' particles visible by unaided eye (marine snow) or light microscopy. Recent discoveries of several new types of abundant particles, from sub-micrometer to sub-marine snow, are changing our ideas of the physical and chemical nature of the particle field with which pelagic bacteria interact. Previous workers have discovered polysaccharide-containing (Alcian Blue stainable) transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) ranging from 3 to 100s of micrometers. Looking for additional components of the sub-marine snow particle field, …
