The Practicum was designed to increase the amount of recreational reading In secondary school students. Students' attitude toward reading was to be improved causing a decrease in disruptive behaviors in the classrooms. The amount of free time spent in leisure reading would increase, and the students would read a greater amount outside of school.

The subjects of the practicum were secondary school students in a large, academically oriented suburban school. They had the skills to read but chose not to do so. A whole language workshop approach vas implemented to engender in students a joy of reading. The workshop was …

Improving The Physical Fitness Of Fourth Grade Elementary Students, Marguerite D. Durr

This report describes the development of a pilot elementary school physical fitness program using six fourth graders as the targeted students. Extensive analysis of available programs was undertaken to determine the appropriate physical fitness program to use for the pilot program. The program selected was the Physical Best, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERO). Surveys were used to determine student perceptions, student knowledge, and teacher observations/perceptions of their students. The results of the surveys agreed with research and resulted in the 4th grade (147 students) being chosen to start the program.

This practicum sought to measure and document real learning in natural circumstances through the use of whole language assessment techniques: Observation checklists on which skills for the language arts (writing, spelling, reading) were listed; the skills of students were measured using descriptor words such as stable, evident, and not evident. In this way, a student’s progress along the road of literacy development was plotted in a positive way.

This practicum sought to improve student writing and student attitude towards writing through a performance-based assessment which featured peer and teacher conferencing, holistic grading and publication of material written by students. The practicum involved seventh and eighth grades and five teachers who instituted all aspects of the writing process from prewriting to evaluation.

This practicum was designed to organize a drug prevention/intervention program for high school students. The primary goal was to organize a Core Team to become an effective instrument for addressing alcohol and drug prevention/intervention strategies for the targeted population. The second aim was to impact staff members by assisting them to recognize early warning signs of potential substance abusers and at-risk students. This practicum was designed to enhance the skills of child protection workers who investigate child abuse that occurs in families where there is a chronically mentally ill caretaker. This project focused on three types of social casework skills, risk assessment, intervention strategies, and community networking.

Skill building was accomplished through three processes. Caseworkers were invited to a forum where current research data and literature that addressed risk issues were presented. Workers were encouraged to discuss and analyze this information as it related to current caseloads. Administrators at Missouri Southern State College (MSSC) recently identified increasing student retention as a major goal. Consistent with postsecondary institutions across the country, women students at MSSC are the "new majority" of undergraduates. An effective retention effort would require identification of women's unique learning needs and the implications for teaching and learning.

Since the majority of MSSC students are commuters, the classroom represents their major learning environment. Few faculty members were aware of gender influences in the classroom and their effect on women's learning. Interpretive constitutional debate over the last few decades has centered on two apparently linked questions: whether the Constitution can be given a determinate meaning, and whether the institution of judicial review can be justified within the basic assumptions of liberalism. Two groups of scholars have generated answers to these questions. The "constitutional faithful" argue that meaning can indeed be determinately affixed to constitutional clauses, by reference to the plain meaning of the document, the original intent of the drafters, evolving political and moral norms of the community, or the best political or moral philosophical theory available and that, because of …

Economic policy debate in the United States during the 1980s focused on the dynamics of bidder and target tactics in hostile takeovers. Confronted with the largest transactions in business history, financial economists took advantage of developments in econometric techniques to conduct virtually real time studies of the impact on firm value of each new bidder tactic and target defense. For courts and lawyers, hostile takeovers subjected standard features of corporate law to the equivalent of a stress x-ray, revealing previously undetected doctrinal cracks. Congress held seemingly endless hearings on the subject, although managing to enact only relatively innocuous tax penalties …

In 1984, the Supreme Court adopted a new framework for determining when courts should defer to interpretations of statutes by administrative agencies. Previous decisions had looked to multiple contextual factors in answering this question. Chevron U.S., Inc. v. National Resources Defense Council, Inc. appeared to reject this approach and require that federal courts defer to any reasonable interpretation by an agency charged with administration of a statute, provided Congress has not clearly specified a contrary answer. The Court justified this new general rule of deference by positing that Congress has implicitly delegated interpretative authority to all agencies charged with enforcing …

This essay is about the power of the international law of nonproliferation- its mounting power in the world today and its properly augmented power in an enlightened future. The article focuses on three primary areas in which international law may play a greater role than is commonly appreciated in affecting the behavior of potential proliferators, their suppliers, and their resolute opponents. The Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees' definition of a refugee is no longer viable. It was originally designed to deal with the limited refugee situation that existed forty years ago. Both the passage of time and the internationalization of refugee problems have weakened the effect of the definition to the point where a majority of de facto refugees do not even come within its ambit. Many of those who should be covered by the definition are not afforded protection under the national schemes designed in accordance with the Convention's provisions. Without a doubt, the issue of softwood lumber pricing has long been a major irritant in Canada-United States trade relations. On three separate occasions, the United States has launched a countervailing duty investigation into Canadian timber pricing practices. The recently enacted Securities Enforcement Remedies and Penny Stock Reform Act of 1990 provides that, in an SEC enforcement action, a federal court may enjoin or "disbar" the defendant from serving in the future as an officer or director of a public company. A court may enter such an order if it finds that the defendant is "substantially unfit" to serve as a corporate executive; the Act, however, does not define "substantial unfitness."
