Scattered Surface Data Estimation And Visualization, Weibao Wu

In the thesis, two new interpolation methods, i.e., extended piecewise Hardy's method and Bezier triangle method, are developed for scattered surface data and the biquadratic method is developed for regular data set. A new contour method which can generate arbitrarily smooth contour line is also presented. The new methods are compared with the existing ones with real scattered data set, supplied by the DOE (Department of Energy), via DRI (Desert Research Institute) and computer simulated data. The results show that the extended piecewise Hardy's method is the most accurate method among all the methods compared, and it is much faster …

The technology of photographic image manipulation has evolved faster than our ability to consider its implications. This thesis looks at the recent evolution of image manipulation, which some regard as a "revolution." The various stages of technological progression are examined using examples according to Brian Winston's model of technological change. These stages include: scientific competence, ideation, prototypes, supervening necessity, invention, the 'law' of the suppression of radical potential, and technological performance. A review of literature on the topic of photography in communication is included as well as an examination of the early photographers who used image manipulation in their work. …

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to compare health-promoting lifestyle practices of rural and urban nurses in Nevada. Pender's Health Promotion Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. A total of 266 randomly sampled rural and urban nurses participated in completing two self-administered questionnaires, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile and a biographical data sheet; Eight research questions were answered in the study. Seven of the research questions sought to determine if significant differences existed between rural and urban nurses on the total Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) and six subscales. No significant differences were identified between the two groups. …

The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between hotel performance and guest's satisfaction using the evaluative congruity theory framework; The findings indicate that the guest's satisfaction of hotel services is a positive function of the functional evaluative congruity between a guest's expectation of hotel attributes and perceived performance outcome. More specifically, the level of satisfaction is the highest among those individuals who have lower expectations but positive perceptions of performance, followed by individuals who have higher expectations and higher perceptions of performance. The present study investigated the relationship of objective indicators of social isolation and measures of well-being among the elderly. Respondents consisted of 135 elderly men and women aged 60 and older chosen from the roster of a dental office. The objective indicators included living alone, having no companions, having no confidants, closeness of confidants, having no children, and marital status. Measures of well-being included a life experience scale, a health status scale, a quality of life scale, a satisfaction scale, and a scale that measured material comforts. Results of a canonical correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship among the indicators …

This study purposed to see if measurable changes could be detected in prospective teachers' attitudes or beliefs about mathematics as teachers progressed through their required courses of study in mathematics and mathematics education. The study included 164 prospective elementary school teachers who were enrolled in one of three mathematics or mathematics education courses. The subjects responded to a survey based on common "mathematics myths." The mathematics myths correspond to mathematical beliefs shown in other research to be held by severely math anxious or math avoidant people. The study found that students disagreed more with the mathematics myths as they progressed …

The purpose of this study was to obtain background data and investigate the potential influence of the variables of leisure/free time, education, athletics, employment, academic failure, alcohol/drug use, peer relationships, family status, family relationships, economic status, race/ethnicity, and gender on rural daily detainee population counts for non-structured days. Comparisons were made for public school year (SY) and summer (SU). The study tested 1 hypothesis and explored 19 questions regarding the relationship of these factors to the time of incarceration. This thesis discusses the current problems surrounding civic participation. Conventional political wisdom tells us that many people have become apathetic when it comes to getting involved in politics. However, I will argue that policy makers misconstrue their perception of the public because they are operating from paradigms which are not democratic. When policy makers operate from these faulty paradigms, the role of the public becomes subordinated and the public is effectively "locked out" of the political decision-making process. This thesis discusses the design and implementation of an OCR post processing system. The system is used to perform automatic spelling detection and correction on noisy, OCR generated text. Unlike previous post processing systems, this system works in conjunction with an inverted file database system. The initial results obtained from post processing 10,000 pages of OCR'ed text are encouraging. These results indicate that the use of global and local document information extracted from the inverted file system can be effectively used to correct OCR generated spelling errors.

This study compared five skinfold equations for body composition (Jackson & Pollock's Sum of 7 {dollar}\{{dollar}JP7{dollar}\}{dollar} and Sum of 3 {dollar}\{{dollar}JP3{dollar}\}{dollar}; Jackson & Pollock's Sum of 4 {dollar}\{{dollar}Y4{dollar}\}{dollar} and Sum of 3 {dollar}\{{dollar}Y3{dollar}\}{dollar} for the YMCA, and Durnin and Womersley's Sum of 7 {dollar}\{{dollar}DW{dollar}\}){dollar} with percent fat obtained from underwater weighing. Subjects were ninety-seven adult males aged 60-80 years. Skinfold measurements were taken with Lange calipers and underwater weight (UWW) was determined in a seated position utilizing a load cell system with residual volume (RV) measured at the time of weighing; The skinfold equations achieved a mean correlation of.74 with …

This exploratory study examined marketing standardization in the hotel industry. As hotel companies continue the internationalization process, standardizing the marketing program could prove to be a viable strategy with appropriate benefits. The objectives of this study were to synthesize the literature on international marketing, standardization and globalization with the literature on hotel marketing to develop tentative research propositions. Primary research served to evaluate these tentative propositions and then formulate them into final propositions for future investigation.

Five general themes are prevalent in the literature of organizational culture: Meaning, structure, language, stability/instability, and reification. This thesis gives a broad general overview of the concept of culture as it relates to communication, analyzes the literature in terms of the above, and makes suggestions for its use to develop in students an understanding and appreciation of the concept of organizational culture. A prescriptive reading plan and a teaching plan are included to allow teachers to select topics that have importance either for themselves or their students.

The purpose of this project is to develop a technique for minimizing the number of iterations needed to determine the XY&Z position for a laser rangefinding system. Using a Charged Coupled Device (CCD) camera to view a robotic work area a user can select an object on a monitor. The technique of microwave digestion was evaluated as a possible alternative to conventional sample preparation methods for the platinum ores prior to spectroscopic analysis. Microwave energy used with aqua regia in closed vessel provides elevated pressure and rapid heating which significantly reduce digestion time. All analyses were carried out by inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). To reduce matrix interferences during analysis, a predigestion step with 50 mL of 1:1 nitric acid was introduced. Both ICP-AES and inductively plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) were used for analysis of sample extracts. ICP-AES analyses showed improved recoveries of Pd (60-80%) and Pt (30-60%) …

This study employed three questionnaires to determine if depression, anxiety and mood levels in women recently diagnosed with breast cancer differed when the breast lump was discovered via breast self-exam versus discovery by physician examination, mammogram or accidental discovery by self or spouse. Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety was measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale and mood was measured by the General Health Questionnaire. The Neuman Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this study. Sixty-two women between the ages of 26-80 years completed the three questionnaires while awaiting the physician during an office visit. …

A Deterministic Surface Estimation Algorithm Using Parametric Line Equations, James Peter Poulos

In this thesis we develop a new deterministic surface estimation algorithm. Given a network of scattered data in the three-dimensional space, we use the Delaunay's Triangulation Method to connect the given points with triangles, subsequently we use out method to interpolate within the path defined by each triangle. The resulted patches have geometric continuity, and the generated surface is also geometrically continuous. Our algorithm is a parametric surface estimation algorithm, and an example showing how it can be implemented is given.

Research was conducted to study the effects of raising the water table level at different rates on petroleum contamination distribution. The experiments were carried out using a two-dimensional sand tank model. The experimental Light Non Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) was No. 2 Diesel fuel and the experimental media was sand (Sieve 20). A known quantity of fuel (5.65 Liters) was leaked into the tank at a leak rate of 0.75 L/hr. The water table level was raised at four different rates, 0.2, 1.4, 9.8, and 20 cm/hr. This thesis is titled "CONCEPTUAL MODELS OF FLOW IN FRACTURES". This thesis study has two parts. In the first part, some conceptual models of fluid flow in fractures will be developed. These models will be used to analyze fluid flow in the near field region of nuclear waste canisters emplaced in fractured rock. Fluid near the canister will evaporate and move into the fractures where it condenses on the walls of the fracture. It is then absorbed by the matrix due to the capillary suction.
