The Relationship Between Food Aid And Food Production In Sub-Saharan Africa., Saba Momodou Jallow

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between food aid and food production in thirty-six Sub-Saharan African countries over an eleven year period. Local food production was used as a dependent variable in a pooled cross sectional time series statistical model with food aid, GNP per capita, population, urbanization, literacy rates, regime type, and rainfall used as explanatory variables. The statistical model was supplemented with four cases pertaining to agricultural food policies and politics in Botswana, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Zimbabwe. This paper describes a novel liquid pump which operates by wave action on the free surface. The wave action can be imposed by means of a piston or pneumatically moving fluid in contact with the liquid. This is of particular concern with hostile fluids such as molten metals, chemically corrosive or explosive liquids, or biologically shear stress sensitive fluids such as blood. The object of this research is to determine the theoretical performance of such a pump. Marine Paleocommunities And Paleoenvironments Of The Upper Mississippian Bluefield Formation In Southern West Virginia., Cranston Christian Christopher

Six communities were recognized from the Chesterian age Bluefield Formation in southern West Virginia. These communities were distributed in a wide range of environments from intertidal to open marine. Bivalve communities dominated the shallow intertidal to nearshore environments and the brachiopod and echinoderm communities dominated the shallow and open marine environments. Statistical analyses including cluster, multidimensional scaling, and discriminant analysis were most effective and were used to interpret vertical and spatial distributions of the communities. Vertical changes in fauna were more common between several units of the Bluefield, and to a lesser extent within a particular unit. Faunal changes between …

The purpose of this study was to address the nature of structural changes evolving in state departments of education which are perceived by chief state school officers as useful in implementing educational reforms. Spectroscopic studies are presented for cr⁴⁺ ions in different hosts. The crystals investigated in this work are divided into two categories. In the first category are included crystals containing chromium in the tetravalent state only. These are purely cr⁴⁺ doped crystals. The second category crystals are more complex, containing chromium in both tetravalent and trivalent states. Detailed investigations of the absorption and luminescence characteristics of cr⁴⁺ in cr⁴⁺:Y 2SiO5, which is a purely cr⁴⁺ doped crystal, allowed a better understanding to be achieved for the spectroscopic behavior of cr⁴⁺ in tetrahedral sites. Gracefully translated by Deborah Lucas Schneider, Hitler's Justice seeks, first, to show how legal professionals betrayed their trust as lawyers, prosecutors, and judges and, second, to assess the degree to which Germany in the postwar period reformed its legal system, purged the judiciary of former Nazis, and rededicated itself to the rule of law. …

Modern Psychological Studies

The recall of an event such as a robbery has been shown to be affected by how closely post-event information corresponds to what the witness actually saw. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the effect of misleading information may be influenced by expertise of the source of the post-event information. Results revealed that subjects recalled less accurately when they received misleading information in the narrative than when the information corresponded with what they had viewed, whereas the accuracy of the recall was unaffected by whether the witness in the narrative was an expert or a non-expert. This research examined the effects of victim bias on the determination of the length of prison sentence given to perpetrators convicted of assault and battery. Three victim characteristics (gender, race, and sexual orientation) were targeted to determine whether they would evoke discrimination in sentencing. Forty subjects were asked to read nine brief crime scenarios and impose prison sentences on the convicted perpetrators of each of the crimes. Three target scenarios were intermixed within the nine crime scenarios. They depicted the crimes of assault and battery of a victim who was either black or white or homosexual. The Stroop effect and subliminal perception are two phenomena which have been studied for years. However, the potential relation between the two has not been conclusively explored. This experiment was designed to demonstrate that a relationship between the two may exist. The procedure consisted of subliminally presenting the name of a color written in black letters simultaneously with a colored stimulus. The supraliminal colored stimulus and subliminal word stimulus were presented on a screen by use of a projector and a tachistoscope (t-scope) respectively. The role of physical illness as a factor of mental illness and the positive effects of exercise on psychological functioning are examined A study of six persons who participated in a fitness program as an adjunct to an existing psychoeducational program is discussed. Methodology, description of the students, results, and personal responses to the fitness program are described. outcomes include a slight decrease in body fat and an increase in cardiovascular fitness as measured by oxygen intake. Although a formal measure of self esteem did not show changes over the course of the study, students report positive attitude changes. An …

Based on the binary tree decomposition of a permutation, a natural vector space of permutation statistics is defined. Besides containing many well known permutation statistics, this space provides the general context for an archetypal recurrence relationship that contains most of the classic combinatorial sequences and some of their known generalizations.

The recent identification of a possible link between the long-term use of aspirin and a reduced incidence of colon and rectal cancer has directed renewed attention to a familiar household medication whose origins reach back to antiquity.

Competition from other painkillers had begun to cut deeply into the market once dominated by aspirin-based products when studies indicated the possibilities, first that the regular consumption of aspirin might prevent second heart attacks, and later that it might lower the risk of heart attacks in healthy individuals. The promise theory views the origin of contract in the making of a promise. This means that it views the creation of contracts as arising, in an important part, from the voluntary acts of promisors rather than from third parties like the State. In this regard, the theory facilitates the classical liberal value of freedom to contract.
