The United States is facing a critical shortage of nurses. A prevailing societal perception of nursing having a subservient role in health care prevents many recruits from choosing this career, despite efforts by nursing leaders to change this perception (Styles, 1988). The purpose of this study was to determine the current perceptions of patients, nurses, and physicians regarding nursing as a profession.; A 20 item modified version of Valiga's View of Nursing Questionnaire was implemented for this study. The subjects included 102 patients, 126 nurses, and 68 physicians who completed the questionnaire in the fall of 1991.; Statistical analysis revealed …

This ex post facto study was designed to determine if the scores of advanced standing LPNs' NCLEX-RN scores were significantly different from those of generic students and to identify predictors of success of NCLEX-RN performance. Based on Bandura's theory of self efficacy it was hypothesized that LPNs would score higher on the NCLEX-RN than generic students. The independent variables were final grades in nursing theory courses (Medical-Surgical, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, and Psychiatric Nursing), and NLN Achievement Tests and the Comprehensive Nursing Achievement Test. In a prospective experimental study, 24 high risk infants over 1,000 grams and under 5 days of age were observed and evaluated for the effects of positioning on the umbilical artery catheter, activity, and oxygen utilization. Infants were positioned right lateral, left lateral, supine and prone, for 2 hours in each position. The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether prone position opposed to other positions increased sleep state behaviors, reduced oxygen need, or created any complication for the umbilical artery catheter. Post traumatic brain injury symptoms can be very stressful to family caregivers. This study evaluated family caregivers' ability to select appropriate caregiver actions following discharge instructions on post traumatic brain injury symptoms. Subjects in the control group viewed videotaped discharge instructions on physical symptoms post traumatic brain injury. The experimental group viewed videotaped discharge instructions on physical symptoms, cognitive dysfunction and behavioral changes post traumatic brain injury. Both groups were given a written post test after viewing the videotape. Those who received information on physical symptoms, cognitive dysfunction, and behavioral changes had a higher mean score than those who received …

Although the need for heparin in flush solutions has not been established, the currently accepted standard of practice is to use heparinized solutions in arterial catheter flush devices. Exposure to heparin may place patients at risk for developing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HITP) and subsequent embolic events. The purpose of the study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in patency of arterial catheters maintained with heparinized or non-heparinized normal saline solutions. The purpose of this study was to identify if spontaneous attributional search was part of the reaction to a myocardial infarction (MI) and if there were relationships among attributional search, perception of control over attributions, gender and adjustment following MI. Attribution theory provided the framework for this study. A descriptive correlational design was utilized. The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of Universal Precautions, the attitudes and beliefs regarding the risk of AIDS among emergency room and critical care nurses and physicians, and the needle recapping behavior that places them at risk for acquiring HIV infection. The American College of Emergency Physicians recently reported that as many as 100,000 to 200,000 geriatric patients are abandoned each year in emergency rooms across the country. At San Francisco General Hospital alone, three to four such patients are abandoned each week, often suffering from dementia or other ailments that impose serious burdens on their families. This study determined the extent to which the 1862 and 1890 land-grant university libraries had implemented strategic planning, including the reasons, processes, problems, and benefits of strategic planning. The study also examined the relationship of the land-grant libraries' planning to that of the parent universities; The research was modeled after Meredith's (1985, 1987) studies of strategic planning in higher education institutions. Descriptive statistics were used to compile the data which were compared to Meredith's results. Louise Erdrich is a mixed blood Turtle Mountain Chippewa, educated in the dominant culture. Her volumes of poetry, Jacklight and Baptism of Desire, express a personal and narrative voice that reflects her tribal, European, Catholic, and educational heritage. Her well received novels, co-authored with her husband, Michael Dorris, are poetic in their language. Love Medicine and Tracks abound in myth, irony, humor, and contemporary Chippewa issues. The Beet Queen and The Crown of Columbus, incorporate Euroamerican settings and characters while disclosing Native American characteristics of oral rhetoric and tribal community. The purpose of this study was three fold: To survey the level of perceived and actual knowledge of diabetes mellitus among medical-surgical nurses, to investigate the relationship of perceived to actual knowledge of diabetes, and to identify factors that affect nurses' level of perceived and actual knowledge of diabetes mellitus. Tools used to gather data were the Demographic Data Sheet (DDS), Diabetes Self-Report Tool (DSRT), and Diabetes Basic Knowledge Test (DBKT). Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Paleotectonic Setting Of The Gazelle Formation, Eastern Klamath Mountains, Northern California, David William Trabert

The Gazelle Formation crops out over an area of 22 x 8 kilometers with a stratigraphic thickness of at least 1.25 kilometers. The Gazelle consists of shale, siltstone, siliceous mudstone, volcaniclastic sandstone, and chert-rich flysch, in decreasing order of abundance. Sediment gravity flows were the dominant sedimentary process during deposition of the Gazelle Formation. Petrographic analysis of sandstones from the Gazelle reveal that these strata were derived from both magmatic arc and subduction complex sources. These petrographic data are consistent with regional geological relationships indicating that the Gazelle Formation was deposited in some portion of an arc-trench system; The sedimentological, …

This study focuses on techniques for decreasing anxiety levels in preoperative patients scheduled for out patient arthroscopic knee surgery. The purpose was to assess the influence of sedative music, as a nursing intervention, on the patient's postoperative anxiety level; Random assignment to a music treatment group or a no music control group, by surgical day, was performed. The value of breast self examination has been well documented. Yet, only 35 percent or less of women perform BSE with even fewer performing it proficiently. This study was aimed at improving both the frequency and proficiency of BSE. The Neuman Health Care Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this research. There was a total N of 60 women divided into three equal groups. Group I received a one to one teaching program on BSE and a pamphlet by the American Cancer Society. The results of this study show that family members influenced the decisions linked to convention travel to Las Vegas. As a secondary result of this study, family decision making in convention participation appeared to be slightly husband-dominant even though spouses perceived spousal equality in decision making roles. Among the studied variables, the two major motives for family convention travel were convention participation itself and spouses' desire to accompany the participant on the trip. The respondents reported they best perceived their spouses' preferences and desire to accompany them on the trip. Gender and household income appeared to be the strongest factors …

This study sought to describe the lived experience of families who had participated in donation. The research question is: Why do families participate in organ or tissue donation?;This is a descriptive qualitative study utilizing techniques of phenomenology for purposes of identifying areas of significance and importance to informants participating in donation. The conceptual framework is Neuman's Systems Model; Thematic discovery will be drawn from the data with the goal of identifying reoccurring themes. This study investigated whether the scores of Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) differed from the validity results of the Couple's Pre-Counseling Inventory revised (Stuart & Jacobson, 1987). The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum

This study investigated the perception of personal physical fitness in adult men and women by comparing a Perceived Physical Fitness Index (PPFI) with a composite index of measured fitness. Subjects were 106 volunteer adults 36-55 years of age. They completed the PPFI (a 7-point Likert-type scale) and were then assessed for body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. A composite fitness score was compared with their PPFI score. Perceived fitness was significantly different than actual fitness (F (1,100) = 31.3, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001) and there was a significant gender difference (F (1,100) = 13.56, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001). However, a significant interaction (F (1,100) = 21.88, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.0001) indicated that the difference between perceived and actual fitness was not consistent for males and females. Further analysis revealed that females were able to estimate their fitness level more accurately than males. The results indicate that perceived fitness is a valid indicator of actual fitness for women but not for men.
