It analyzes the interactions of the political and economic spheres, and the effects of those interactions on political development within Iran. Reports concerning the high rate of child sexual abuse in bulimic populations have not generally been supported by empirical investigations. The current study addressed methodological problems that may have accounted for insignificant results, and investigated family environment as a possible mediator of the relationship. Results indicate a significant correlation between bulimia and child sexual abuse within a sample of college women (n = 786). Furthermore, both women with bulimia and victims of child sexual abuse reported families that were low in cohesion and independence, and higher in conflict and control. Family environment did not significantly mediate or moderate the relationship …

Geographic information systems are shown to exhibit significant potential in impact assessment and complex spatial data management. Advances in computing technology have lead to wide spread use of GIS in many areas, particularly in transportation, environmental and landuse impact assessment studies; Yucca Mountain, 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas Nevada has been chosen as the site of a proposed repository for high level nuclear waste. The purpose of this research was to assess if frail elders in the Las Vegas community had transportation problems and were unable to satisfy their needs. A survey of 103 randomly selected residents (65 and above), was made; The results of the study indicate that a number of factors have a significant relationship with the elders' inability to move or get around. Fifteen amateur weightlifters, between the ages of 21 and 35 years, volunteered to participate in a study to determine the effect of an amino acid supplement on muscle size, muscle strength, body composition, and body weight. A blind protocol was followed in which eight of the participants were administered the amino acid supplement and seven received a placebo. Each subject was tested before and immediately after the ten week experimental period for height, weight, skinfolds, hydrostatic weighing, body circumferences, static strength, and dynamic strength; Post supplementation, independent T tests indicated that the differences in percent body fat, weight, circumference measurements, …

Several computer models are currently available that can address portions of nuclear waste transportation analysis. However, no single computer model is currently available to permit an integrated analysis that provides effective graphical display of results and product generation. One model available for analysis related to the transport of hazardous material is Radtran. Radtran requires difficult to obtain data and its outputs are presented in a tabular format. An evaluation of the results was used to determine if a positive relationship exists between the perceptions/attitude of parents who have access to child care at their work place and those who do not have child care benefits at work. It criticizes Western society's videocentrism, or centering of television as the predominant medium of communicating to mass society. This method is known as videocentric criticism; Chapter one assesses the modern and postmodern condition. Philosophy from the Greek and modern Enlightenments suggests that Western society's videocentrism is a developing process originating in these periods. It then addresses modernity and postmodernity. The four largest firms in the Nevada slot route industry control over 70 percent of the industry. Its structure was shown to be highly concentrated using the Herfindahl-Herschman index; The individual slot route operators appear to conduct themselves in a non-competitive manner by differentiating their respective products. Each firm in the industry established their own niche either through product or service differentiation; Firms in concentrated industries tend to earn monopoly profits. The thesis reports the reduction and analysis of Very Large Array snapshot observations at 6 cm with the A and C arrays of 192 and 192 + 89 radio sources associated with quasars. The sample includes all of the candidates for the complete samples of radio-loud quasars discussed by Wills and Lynds (1978). The routine reduction included two passes of phase self-calibration. Maps were made with image size of 512 x 512. The A (C) array maps have 0.1 (1.3) arcsec cell sizes, with 0.1 to 0.2 (0.2 to 0.4) mJy/Beam rms noise and dynamic ranges of a few thousand. …

This study investigated the inner experience of five bulimic subjects, ages 18 to 56 years, using the descriptive experience sampling method (Hurlburt, 1990). Subjects were signaled at random intervals by a programmed beeping device, asked to "freeze" any inner events, such as thoughts, images, or feelings, at the moment of the beep, and to record this experience in a notebook. Subjects met with investigators within 24 hours to discuss each sampled moment in detail. Investigators then examined subjects' descriptions for emerging salient characteristics. It has been theorized and evidenced that traditional reliabilities calculated on tests consisting of context-dependent item sets yield inflated estimates. However, the degree of inflated reliability for different scoring techniques has not been observed. This study scored three context-dependent item sets as stand-alone items and as separate item sets using three different scoring techniques; number-right, polyweighting and the three-parameter IRT logistic model. Differences in reliability estimates for the stand-alone and item set treatment were determined for each scoring procedure and compared. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to compare the critical thinking and clinical judgement skills of senior nursing students at two educational levels. A convenience sample of 34 students in the Midwest was obtained during the spring semester before graduation (n = 19 baccalaureate, n = 15 associate). The framework for the study was decision theory. Critical thinking ability was measured by the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal. Drawing blood from indwelling heparinized arterial catheters is a common procedure in critical care units. The accuracy of coagulation studies drawn from heparinized arterial lines has been a source of controversy and divergent results of research studies. The discarding of blood to provide an uncontaminated specimen is a concern as a source of infection for health care workers. House's Stress Paradigm provided the theoretical framework for this study which examined the relationship between job satisfaction and job stress, and the correlation of job stress with the experience of psychological symptoms in a sample of 32 critical care nurses from an urban midwestern hospital. The Brief Symptom Inventory and Atwood and Hinshaw's Nursing Job Satisfaction and Job Stress Scales were used to measure the variables. A moderately strong correlation (r = {dollar}-{dollar}.63, p =.001) was found between job satisfaction and perceived job stress. No significant relationship was found between perceived job stress and psychological symptoms. These findings suggest that …

It was a replication of a study by Megal, Wilken, and Volcek (1987).; In May, 1990, the STAI Form Y-2 was used to assess trait anxiety of 17 students at a community college in the Midwest. This study evaluated the effects of implementing a standardized nursing protocol on decreasing the length of time it takes the patient to wean from long-term ventilation using an ex post facto comparison group design. The standard nursing protocol is a set of 10 nursing interventions used to standardize the weaning process. A retrospective chart review was performed on 24 patients who were in the intensive care unit of a community teaching medical center, and required long-term ventilation of six days or more. The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Powerlessness, And Job Satisfaction Among Registered Nurses, Evelyn C. Wirsing

A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was used to investigate the following research questions: (a) How much variation in nurses' satisfaction can be predicted from locus of control and powerlessness? and (b) are there statistically significant (p {dollar}<{dollar}.05) differences in job satisfaction among nurses based upon their primary area of practice, highest earned degree, length of employment in current position, and employment status? A random sample of 300 staff nurses from a large acute care teaching hospital was surveyed utilizing a four-part questionnaire. The response rate was 51% (N = 152). Powerlessness accounted for 29% of the variance in job satisfaction scores and locus of control accounted for none of the variation in job satisfaction. Secondly, a weekly significant difference (F(5, 146) = 2.29, p {dollar}<{dollar}.05) in job satisfaction scores existed among clinical specialty groups, however no significant differences in job satisfaction were found for the remaining professional characteristics.

Hardiness, a personality characteristic that is purposed to mediate the stress response and reduce the likelihood of illness, was studied in the context of adaptation to chronic disease. A descriptive correlational design was used to determine whether a positive relationship exists between the presence of hardiness and psychosocial adaptation to hypertension. The sample consisted of 50 individuals 60 years old or older. Data was analyzed using the product moment correlation coefficient, Spearman's Rho, and multiple regression. Reports have indicated that nurses have negative and preconceived attitudes concerning persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and that these biases may interfere with quality care. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to identify the relationship between nurses' knowledge about AIDS and their attitudes toward caring for patients who are diagnosed with AIDS and/or who test positive for HIV. Data was gathered by questionnaires from a convenient sample of nurses employed at an area hospital in West Michigan.
