In a series of papers published in the 1930's, L. Redei and H. Reichardt established a method for determining the 4-rank of the narrow ideal class group of a quadratic number field, essentially by finding the rank over ${\bf F}\sb2$ of a $\{0,1\}$-matrix determined by applying the Kronecker symbol to the prime divisors of the field discriminant. When this field is of the form ${\bf Q}(m\sp{1\over2}),$ with $m={\pm}p\sb1{\cdots}p\sb{n},$ each $p\sb{i}\equiv3$ (mod 4) prime, this matrix takes a form similar to that of the adjacency matrix for a tournament graph. Present investigation was undertaken to determine the feasibility of using a Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) Ion Exclusion Chromatographic system for the recovery of sugars from molasses. The recovery of sugars from molasses is complicated because of the presence of high concentration of salts of K, Ca, Mg, etc. The presence of these salts in the molasses prevents sucrose to crystallize. SMB Ion Exclusion Chromatography has been shown to be successful to recover sugars from beet molasses, and to separate sugars from each other in High Fructose Corn Syrup industry. The effects of control (dieting) and loss of control over eating (overeating) on resting metabolic rate (RMR) were examined in a sample of 44 normal premenopausal women. A 2 (Restraint: High and Low) x 2 (Disinhibition: High and Low) design was utilized. Subjects were selected by their scores on the restraint and disinhibition scales of Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (Stunkard & Messick, 1985). The four groups were: women who alternated between dieting and overeating (HR/HD); women who dieted without overeating (HR/LD); women who did not diet or overeat (LR/LD); and women who did not diet and repeatedly overate (LR/HD). The objective of this research was to study the effects of fatigue on lifting acceleration and posture caused by repetitive manual lifting. Electromyogram, oxygen consumption and heart rate were used as indices of a subject's physiological fatigue. Data were collected for a period of two hours of continuous lifting, at a rate of 4 lifts per minute using the free-style posture. A box of fixed dimensions (30cm x 30cm x 20cm) and fixed weight (15.9 Kg) was used as load. It was found that the average load acceleration increased with work duration. A mutant Arabidopsis acetolactate synthase (ALS) gene csr-1-1, conferring chlorsulfuron resistance, was tested in transgenic rice to develop an alternative selectable marker for rice transformation. Up to a 200-fold increase in chlorsulfuron resistance was detected in transgenic rice calli expressing the mutant ALS gene under control of the CaMV 35S promoter. Efficient selection of resistant protoplast colonies was achieved by using 10 to 50 nM of chlorsulfuron after transformation with the 35S/ALS gene. Fertile transgenic rice plants were successfully recovered from 35S/ALS-containing transformants. These results demonstrated that the 35S/ALS gene could be used as a selectable marker gene in rice …

In the context of demographic, economic, and cultural perspectives of marriage, this dissertation attempts to identify causes of the black and white divergence in marriage propensity. The findings show a strong linkage between the social context and the marriage behavior of that person. This linkage provides a new angle from which the racial differences in marriage behavior are better understood. For females, the lower rate of marrying among black females, compared to white females, is due to poor marriage markets that black females are facing. This dissertation presents the findings of research conducted to analyze the impact of black representation in state legislatures on state public welfare expenditures. Data is collected and analyzed for the period of 1970 through 1988. Black representation is operationalized as the percentage of blacks in the total number of legislators of both chambers of each state legislature. Public Welfare expenditures is operationalized as the percentage of the state expenditures classified as public welfare expenditures. The primary focus of this investigation was to examine differences in depression, general psychopathology, and social skills among adolescents, and to identify the role of adaptive behavior between intelligence (I.Q.) and depression. One hundred adolescents, 13 through 17 years of age participated in this study. I.Q.s ranged between 40 to 130. Five levels of I.Q.s were studied (Above normal, Average, Borderline, Mild, Moderate). Nevado del Ruiz is an andesitic stratovolcano located 150 km northwest of Bogota, Colombia. This volcano is characterized by a large hydrothermal system with two very distinctive types of water: acid sulfate waters, and bicarbonate and neutral chloride waters. The waters within each group fall in well-defined lines on compositional cross plots. There is an apparent lack of mixing between the two water types. The acid sulfate waters appear to be related to the north-west striking and seismically active Villamaria-Termales fault. The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of coordinators with the Board of International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD) of sustainable agriculture, and practices and the ideas needed to promote it. The study also sought to verify Crosson's model of agricultural productivity and land potential. A three-part, field tested questionnaire was mailed to all 157 Title XII coordinators at Land Grant Universities throughout the United States. Of the 103 returned questionnaires a 58.6% usable response rate was obtained. Previous researchers have reported the isolation of a diphenylether cleaving organism, Erwinia sp., using an enrichment medium containing lignin. A copper and dinitrophenol resistant mutant of this organism, Erwinia sp. Cu3614, has also been reported. To assess the effect of copper on the growth and biochemistry of this organism, continuous cultivation was used employing an apparently optimized medium containing ethanol as carbon source. Upon increasing the concentration of copper sulfate in the medium from 5 $\mu$g/ml to 10 $\mu$g/ml increases in maximum specific growth rate and growth yield were seen. The subject of this research is the prediction of failures in repairable multi-component systems from statistical models that utilize the historical failure data for the systems. Failures occurring in repairable systems are examples of a series of discrete events which occur randomly in a continuum. Such stochastic point processes are analyzed using the statistics of event series. In this study a post-cracking formulation for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures has been proposed. The secant stiffness formulation considers the following nonlinearities: effects of tension-stiffening in concrete along the reinforcing direction(s), aggregate interlock model with variable shear based on crack confining stresses, and reduction of concrete compressive strength and stiffness after cracking as a function of stresses or strains. The cracking model is capable of simulating the effects of multiple non-orthogonal cracks at a point. This total stiffness formulation treats concrete unloading and reloading along a secant path and is capable of simulating the post-peak strain softening response. …

A comprehensive investigation, using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, x-ray diffraction, and $\sp{29}$Si and $\sp{27}$Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, was conducted on the NaOH-activated blastfurnace slag system. Integration of the results from these techniques accommodated characterization of the unreacted glass, identification of the crystalline hydration products, and presentation of a proposed structure for the C-S-H phase. Crystalline hydration products identified by x-ray diffraction were CSH(I) and (C,M)$\sb4$AH$\sb{\rm x}$, and the proposed structure for the C-S-H phase consists mainly of imperfect layers of tobermorite. The present study examined the relationships of politics in appraisal and political use of appraisal to ratee attitudes and desire to respond to appraisal feedback. Hypotheses were developed from research on politics in appraisal, the feedback process model of Ilgen, Fisher, and Taylor, 1979, and equity theory (Adams, 1965). Negative relationships between politics and dependent variables were predicted. Two studies were conducted. Effects of competition on growth and formation of shoot structure in sicklepod (Senna obtusifolia) were examined, with particular emphasis on the effect of nearest neighbors on branching and canopy formation. Sicklepod was established as (1) stands of 26 plants m$\sp{-2}$ added to soybean, (2) individuals widely enough spaced to produce only interspecific competition when added to soybean, or (3) regularly spaced monoculture stands with 15, 25, 35, and 50 cm interplant distances. Teachers completed the CTRS-39 on 100 boys assigned to one of four groups based on IQ and scores on a DSM-III-R checklist of the symptoms for Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (AD-HD). The groups included a normal control group, children with AD-HD, mentally retarded children, and mentally retarded children with AD-HD. There were no significant differences between the AD-HD group and the mentally retarded AD-HD group on all but one of the Conners' Factors and no significant differences on the IOWA Conners' Scales that were extracted from the CTRS-39. I explore the relationship between partisan votes and partisan seat allocation in U.S. state lower-house elections. Specifically, I measure the representational form (the rate of partisan seat changes given particular partisan vote changes) and partisan bias (asymmetry in the seats-votes relationship) of 441 lower-house state legislative elections in 46 states from 1968 to 1987. I then test a number of hypotheses that have been advanced to explain variation in representational form and partisan bias. Challenging a heterogenous population of plants (rapid-cycling Brassica rapa L.) with waterlogging, we selected plants which differed in their response to rootzone hypoxia. Based on visual criteria, individuals from the waterlogged wild-type population were separated into "tolerant" and "sensitive" groups and mass pollinated to produce the next generation. This selection protocol was continued for seven generations. Under waterlogged conditions, chlorophyll concentrations in the tolerant population were significantly greater than in the sensitive population. After eight days of waterlogging, tolerant plants had significantly greater dry root and shoot weights than the sensitive plants. However, when tolerant and sensitive populations were grown …

A profound decrease in perfusion of the laminar capillaries has been documented during acute equine laminitis, resulting in ischemia of the laminar tissue. Oxygen radicals are believed to mediate ischemia/reperfusion injury. The effects of (1) three hours of surgical ligation of the major blood supply of the equine digit followed by ligature release, (2) resection of the medial and lateral palmar digital arteries, and (3) digital intraarterial infusions of an oxygen radical generating system, were investigated. This dissertation focuses on three leading theoretical and empirical issues in the anomaly of dividend policy. The first essay analyzes the explanatory power of the various theories of dividend determinants, many of which have not been tested yet. In this essay, time-series cross-sectional tests are undertaken using individual firm data, while the structural vector autoregressive (VAR) methodology is applied to the aggregate data. The second essay proposes an alternative approach to the ex-dividend anomalies that fully incorporates both the tax-effect hypothesis and the short-term trading hypothesis. This study reviews the relapse prevention and neuropsychological literature relevant to alcoholism. The argument was made that impaired neuropsychological functioning may be an important determinant of relapse. Specifically, neuropsychological impairment was expected to affect the manner in which individuals respond to conditioned alcohol cues so as to increase their attention to the cues and increase their desire to drink, a process which might adversely affect recovery. In order to study the impact of conditioned alcohol cues, subjective, objective, and psychophysiological responses of brain-damaged alcoholics, nonbrain-damaged alcoholics, and nonbrain-damaged social drinkers were compared on their responses to alcohol and to water. …

The goals of this project were to investigate factors that predicted nonadherence to fluid restrictions for patients on hemodialysis, and to evaluate a relatively long-term behavioral intervention to improve adherence to recommended fluid requirements. One hundred forty-one subjects were recruited from outpatient dialysis clinics in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In the prediction study, several medical and demographic variables as well as psychological variables of health locus of control, depressed mood, and social support were placed into a regression equation to determine the variance of fluid noncompliance predicted. The lentivirus Equine Infectious Anemia Virus (EIAV) causes an acute infection in horses which is characterized by fever, viremia, thrombocytopenia, edema, and hemolytic anemia. Most horses survive the acute disease, but remain persistently infected for life. The exact mechanism whereby horses' control their initial infection is unknown, though it appears likely that cellular immune mechanisms are involved. T lymphocytes have been shown to play a major role in the recovery from a variety of viral infections, though their role in EIAV infection has not been established. The present study attempted to extend the results obtained by Kelley and Carper (1988) regarding the psychometric properties of the Mother's Activity Checklist utilizing a larger, more heterogeneous sample of mothers. The MAC is a 100-item checklist of pleasant and unpleasant setting events which mothers frequently experience. Research suggests that homework has favorable effects on learning and student achievement. However, research directed at improving homework completion and accuracy has been limited in scope. The present study examined the effects of goal setting and contingency contracting on children's homework performance. Subjects were four parent-child dyads in which the child exhibited clinically significant homework problems. Dependent variables of primary interest included direct observation of children's on-task behavior, work accuracy, and Homework Problem Checklist scores (Anesko, Schoiock, Ramirez, & Levine, 1987).
