The purpose of this study was to identify academic variables that could be used to forecast success for minority, baccalaureate (BSN) students enrolled in higher education in the south. A second purpose was to develop a methodological framework for predicting success on the post-1988 versions of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), that enhanced external validity, and generalizability. The best predictors of success for minority BSN nursing students were the Mosby assesstest, school comprehensive exit exams, GPA microbiology, the college cumulative GPA, nursing course cumulative GPA, and ACT composite. The transition portion of the speech signal has been identified as critical to the perception of both consonants and vowels. Furui (1986) demonstrated that for adult Japanese speakers a 10 ms segment of the transition centered on the area of maximum spectral movement contained the most critical information for joint consonant and vowel perception. The distribution of phonemic cues contained within consonant-vowel (CV) non-reduplicated (NRB) syllables of infants ages 6 months to 15 months was compared to the distribution observed in adult productions to examine the extent of coproductive overlap of infant consonant and vowel gestures. Temporal lobe cortex was found to be essential to the initial processing of odor information within the cortex. This brain area can recognize previously smelled odors independent of damaged orbitofrontal cortex. In contrast, orbitofrontal cortex was found to be essential to identifying odors and attaching a verbal or nonverbal label to odor stimuli. These findings were observed in three brain-damaged groups, those with left hemisphere stroke (CVA), right hemisphere CVA, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The differential pattern of performance observed for CVA and TBI subjects on odor identification and odor recognition tasks suggests that temporal lobe and orbitofrontal olfactory …

Recent developments, including and especially the passage of legislation such as P.L. 99-457, have led to a call for more sophisticated technology to accurately assess at-risk preschool children. In addition, there is an urgent need for well trained professionals to perform these assignments. The purpose of the present study was to utilize the Lens Model methodology to examine variables professionals believe are important predictors of successful kindergarten functioning. As a result of science reform efforts in the United States numerous shortcomings of the predominant curricula have been identified. The following study evaluates a modular, environmental science curriculum entitled Wild Louisiana, which attempts to address these shortcomings. Wild Louisiana is Science-Technology-Society (STS) oriented and infuses regionally based instructional videos and simulation-gaming activities into the secondary science curriculum. The videos and activities depict the confluence of regional biological, technical, and social phenomena to illustrate universal environmental concepts. This study examined differing perceptions of teachers and parents pertaining to frequency and importance of social skills and problem behaviors in preschool children. Specifically, the present investigation considered social skills of preschool children considered to be At-Risk for educationally handicapping conditions as well as a group of Typical preschool children. Both teacher and parent ratings on the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) (Gresham & Elliott, 1990) and the revised Conners Rating Scales (CRS), (Goyette, Conners, & Ulrich, 1978) were obtained from a sample of 95 preschool children. This study investigated the effects of the child's specific ADHD symptoms, aggressive symptoms, and the parents' and child's locus of control orientation on parental stress. The frequently overlooked heterogeneous nature of the ADHD population was addressed, by assessing specific ADHD symptoms and the presence of aggressive symptomatology. Sixty boys, ages 6 to 12 years, diagnosed (using DSM-III-R criteria) as having ADHD by a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, and their parents participated in the study. Three different issues were involved in this study. Issue I examined the means and variances of teacher behavior for teachers in effective school versus teachers in ineffective schools. Five teachers were evaluated from grade three and grade five of five effective and six ineffective schools (25 teachers from effective schools and 30 teachers from ineffective schools). Observations of seven dimensions of teaching behavior were conducted. In every case, the group means of teacher behavior were higher for the teachers in the effective school category. Restraint theory states that for some individuals physiological factors which normally result in eating compete with cognitive efforts to resist eating (i.e. dietary restraint). This disparity has been hypothesized to result in a chronic state of stress which leads to reduced behavioral control and increased negative affect. It has been presumed that dietary restraint is a precondition for overeating. Despite the legitimacy of proposing a link between stress, dietary restraint and overeating this interaction has not received intensive study. This dissertation proposes to derive a critical reading from the writings of the Martinican poet, novelist, and theorist, Edouard Glissant. This reading would most directly involve, but not limit itself to, literatures written by black writers from the Caribbean and the United States. As critics such as Christopher Miller and Anthony Appiah suggest, these literatures have become the ground upon which colonization is symbolically re-enacted. Criticism colonizes these literatures by its textual appropriation, its imposition of Western critical models, and by bringing its own assumptions to the text. This dissertation examines variant mimetic strategies as the basis for a major dialectic within postmodern culture. The method applies and sometimes extends largely accepted theoretical statements on literary form. This synthesis provides an accessible, if at times complex, schema for organizing types, genres, and postmodern products based on image production and forms of spatial/temporal discourse. An investigation of several theorists and artists grounds a theory of literary and cinematic expressionism as the basis for postmodern culture, with particular emphasis given to the interpenetration of literary and cinematic styles in the twentieth century. Black Americans exhibit significantly more aggressive behaviors than do white Americans and these aggressive acts are most likely to be directed toward other blacks, frequently in response to relatively trivial matters (Bell, 1987; Curtis, 1974). Aggression most often occurs in areas of high population density, poverty, and low social status, suggesting that socioeconomic status is an important variable in aggressive behavior (Centerwall, 1984; Willie, 1983). Attribution refers to the perception or inference of causes of self or others' behavior. Eliot have agreed that the European experience of world war and the resultant political and cultural dislocations provided an important context and source of imagery for much of his work, what has not been recognized is Eliot's use of figures of war to represent the intimate yet antagonistic relations between the poet's writing of modernity and the text that is history. The major objective of this research is to develop daily time series models for maximum and minimum temperature series. A generalized modeling methodology is presented. Stochastic modeling was accomplished by analyzing the structural characteristics of the temperature series. Analyses included assessment for time reversibility, linearity, structural dependence and distributional properties of the weakly stationary series obtained by parametric standardization of the observed series. Based on the results of the structural characterization of the series and the results of the model class identification using a 'state-dependent model' formulation, a bilinear model class was identified as appropriate for the temperature series. The playwrights deliberately ruptured theatric traditions and boldly presented plays challenging not only the mainstream theatre, but the current social system. Negating the age-old doctrine that tragedy properly concerns the great man, and comedy reviles the low-born, the playwrights at the Little Theatre in both their tragedies and comedies enlarged the province of the drama to include the ordinary human with real problems. The physiologic demands of exercise constitute a form of stress which is accompanied by modulation of immune responses. However, numerous studies in many different model systems have failed to clearly define the effects of exercise on immunity. Furthermore, the role of the neuroendocrine system in exercise-induced immunomodulation has been largely unexplored. To address these issues, we evaluated the effect of acute exercise stress on 3 indices of immune function in horses, before and after completion of a 12 week treadmill-based physical conditioning program. To develop an understanding of the physiology which results in postharvest leaf blackening, cut flower Protea species were studied in relation to changes in leaf carbohydrate metabolism, membrane deterioration, and oxidative enzyme activity. Rapid development of leaf blackening in the dark was correlated with low starch and sucrose concentrations. Postharvest decline in leaf carbohydrate status appears to be associated with inflorescence sink demand. Leaf blackening was reduced in the light and carbohydrate pools were maintained due to photosynthesis. In floral stems of P. neriifolia, P. Susannae x compacta and P. eximia (which have differing susceptibilities to leaf blackening), leaf blackening …

This study evaluated the relationship of age to various aspects of the chronic pain syndrome before and after participation in a multidisciplinary 21-day inpatient treatment program for chronic pain at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, California. Subjects were 135 male servicemen and veterans, ranging in age from 23 to 71 years. Age was significantly related to number of medical problems and duration of pain, but not number of pain sites, surgeries, or medications. While age was negatively, but weakly associated with cognitive aspects of depression on admission, it was not significantly related to either total score on …

In evaluation practice, Evaluability Assessment (EA) is recognized as an affective tool to determine if a plausible program logic exists before the effort is made to evaluate impact. Applying EA in the Cooperative Extension System, if programs lacked plausibility, the process was used as a design tool. This study deals with the three dimensional analysis of reinforced concrete structural members under multiaxial loading conditions. An incremental formulation in conjunction with the finite element method is used to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete material. A hypoelastic model capable of simulating response of plain concrete under nonproportional loading conditions is employed. A five parameter strength envelope is used to predict the failure of concrete in multiaxial stress states. A smeared crack model capable of handling multiple non-orthogonal cracks is used to represent the post cracking behavior of concrete. A computerized algal turbidostat was designed and constructed for use in aquaculture facilities requiring a continuous feed source. Continuous cultures, maintained in the exponential growth phase by the continual introduction of fresh media, exhibit a steadystate nature easily adaptable to computer automation and optimization processes. These characteristics, in contrast to batch culture methods, result in both reduced land and labor requirements; an important consideration for commercial applications wherein algal production occupies as much as 40 percent of a facility in both space and cost. Two groups of students with visual impairments were taught various independent living skills. Five of the seven students also had a diagnosis of mental retardation. One group (three first graders) was taught the tasks of folding a shirt, making an emergency telephone call, and spreading soft foods with a knife. The other group (four young men) was taught to increase leisure skills through three different leatherwork tasks. Independence training was conducted in a group format, and included social learning components (e.g., self-evaluation, peer evaluation and reinforcement) in addition to traditional operant procedures (e.g., modeling, prompting). The purpose of this study is to develop a framework for the notions of meaningful and non-meaningful and to test for learning interference from a non-meaningful then meaningful instructional sequence. A review of the literature reveals that terminologies differ widely, but similarities in notions emerge. The terms meaningful and non-meaningful are employed here to indicate, respectively, richness in relationships, or a relative absence of relationships both within the knowledge structure, and in relation to previous knowledge. Based on a Piagetian framework of learning involving assimilation/accommodation and consequently disequilibrium, I hypothesize that non-meaningful learning tends to establish constructs that interfere with …

In concert with increasing attention to global competition, global diversification has emerged as a significant area of study in strategic management. This study examined a sample of U.S. manufacturing firms to investigate several important issues in the relationship between global diversification and firm performance. The results showed that changes in global diversification have a significant influence on changes in all accounting measures of performance used in this study. However, when the data were analyzed cross-sectionally, global diversification had only a limited influence on profitability and its stability. This dissertation proposes a close reading of Theophile Gautiers's Mademoiselle de Maupin. The purpose of this reading is to explore subjectivity by first assuming that it is a process, enacted by the protagonist's explorations of their own identities, but not an object contained in their elaborations. This view of subjectivity implies both the representational strategies of the protagonists, as well as the narrative strategies of the text. Since Mademoiselle de Maupin's narrative structure is so inconsistent and self-conscious, the explorations of self within the text draw attention to both the fiction of identity and the "identity" of fiction as a …
