Development Of A Prototype Pavement Management System For Municipal Maintained Roads And The Integration With A Geographic Information System, Olumide Adedamola Adeyinka

Open Access Master's Theses

A pavement management system (PMS) is a set of tools or methods that assist decision makers in finding optimum strategies for providing and maintaining pavements in a serviceable condition over a given period of time at the least cost. Without such a routine pavement maintenance program, roads require more frequent reconstruction, thereby costing the state and local governments additional dollars.

In this study, a prototype PMS for municipal maintained roads was developed for a typical township in Rhode Island, the Town of South Kingston. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey and comparative analysis, Micro PAVER was selected as …

Some Applications Of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Mohd Norazmi Alias Jan 1992

Some Applications Of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Mohd Norazmi Alias

Open Access Master's Theses

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been widely used to characterize rates and mechanisms during electrochemical processes. In this study, EIS was employed to probe the behavior for simulated galvanic coupling of a carbon fiber/polymer matrix composite in the marine environment. In a later study the effect of cathodic 10n plating and ion implantation of 304 stainless steel on its corrosion behavior was examined.

The electrochemical behavior of a carbon fiber/vinyl ester composite in 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated. Negative potentials were applied to the composite material to simulate galvanic coupling of metals. EIS enables time dependent data to be acquired …

X‐Ray Powder Diffraction Structural Phase‐Transition Study Of La(Cr1‐Xmnx)O3 (X = 0 To 0.25) Using The Rietveld Method Of Analysis, Scott A. Howard, Jen‐Kuan ‐K Yau, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1992

X‐Ray Powder Diffraction Structural Phase‐Transition Study Of La(Cr1‐Xmnx)O3 (X = 0 To 0.25) Using The Rietveld Method Of Analysis, Scott A. Howard, Jen‐Kuan ‐K Yau, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The La(Cr1‐xMnx)O3 (x = 0 to 0.25) system exhibited a displacive phase transformation from an orthorhombic to a rhombohedral structure at temperatures ranging from about 256°C at x= 0 to 305°C at x= 0.25. The Rietveld method of X‐ray analysis was used to determine structural characteristics and to assay phase concentrations when multiple phases were present. Indications were that the Mn ions on the B site affected the transition temperature through an ionic size effect; i.e., Mn3+, with a larger ionic size than Cr3+, increased the transition temperature while the presence …

Solvent Extraction Reagent Entrainment Effects On Zinc Electrowinning From Waste Oxide Leach Solutions, M. Neira, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Johh L. Watson Jan 1992

Solvent Extraction Reagent Entrainment Effects On Zinc Electrowinning From Waste Oxide Leach Solutions, M. Neira, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Johh L. Watson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A considerable quantity of metal-containing waste oxide is generated by the primary metal industry, and under increased environmental regulation, treatment of these wastes has become viable. Hydrometallurgical processing is often appropriate and one potential treatment process for zinc oxide wastes involves leaching the oxide with an acid, purifying by a solvent extraction operation, and recovering metallic zinc by electrowinning the purified leach solution. The purification stage is frequently critical and the introduction of a solvent extraction organic reagent into the flowsheet can be detrimental to downstream processes. The object of this study was to determine the effect of organics, entrained …

Electrical Conductivity And Seebeck Coefficient Of (La, Ca) (Cr, Co)O3, R. Koc, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1992

Electrical Conductivity And Seebeck Coefficient Of (La, Ca) (Cr, Co)O3, R. Koc, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficients of (La, Ca) (Cr, Co)O3 were measured as a function of temperature. The electrical conductivity as measured in air from 100 to 1100 °C increased with increasing Co and Ca content. The Seebeck coefficients were positive, indicating p-type conductivity. The substitution of Co for Cr significantly decreased the Seebeck coefficients, indicating that the substitution resulted in an increase in site occupancy, associated with the Co. The additional Ca substitution for La resulted in further decrease in the Seebeck coefficients, then exhibited a temperature-independent behaviour, indicating that the carrier mobility, rather than carrier concentration, was …

Tensile Fatigue Behaviour Of Tightly Woven Carbon/Carbon Composites, A. Ozturk, Robert E. Moore Jan 1992

Tensile Fatigue Behaviour Of Tightly Woven Carbon/Carbon Composites, A. Ozturk, Robert E. Moore

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The tensile fatigue behavior of a tightly woven carbon/carbon composite was investigated as a function of stress level. Load-controlled fatigue tests were performed in tension-tension mode with a stress ratio, R, of 0.1 under ambient laboratory conditions. Results of composite behavior are discussed in terms of the relationship of the stress/strain behavior to the fatigue life of these composites as well as the effects of applied stress levels. It is shown that these composites exhibit good resistance to cyclic loading. No fatigue failures were obtained after 106 cycles when the maximum tensile load in the fatigue cycle is less than …

Functional Teapots, Michael R. Hughes Jan 1992

Functional Teapots, Michael R. Hughes

Theses

My thesis project was about teapots and the various ways they can be used. I choose three different settings in which people use teapots. I attempted to alter the character of the pot to be appropriate for the situation in which it was intended. In simple terms, the three kinds of teapots were: a large teapot for a group of people, a teapot for a single person for private time, and a breakfast teapot.

Damping Of Elastic-Viscoelastic Beams, Ray A. West Jan 1992

Damping Of Elastic-Viscoelastic Beams, Ray A. West

Theses

The subject of this investigation is the dynamic behavior of a composite beam consisting of a main elastic core and two viscoelastic layers. The viscoelastic layers provide increased damping of vibrations. When the beam vibrates, damping is caused by energy dissipation in the viscoelastic layers due to their shear deformations. Thus, the goal of this investigation is the development of a method to assess the dynamic characteristics, including the effectiveness of damping, in the layered elastic-viscoelastic beam. Analysis of the resulting sixth-order partial differential equation along with the appropriate boundary conditions is the key to the dynamic characterization of the …

Steady-State Oscillations Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Christopher A. Tucher Jan 1992

Steady-State Oscillations Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Christopher A. Tucher

Theses

In this paper, an efficient algorithm is developed for the identification of stable steady-state solutions to periodically forced linear and nonlinear dynamical systems. The developed method is based on mapping techniques introduced by Henri Poincare' and the theory of one-parameter transformation groups. The algorithm successfully identifies initial conditions which give rise to strictly periodic orbits. The technique is demonstrated on selected problems associated with linear as well as nonlinear systems.

Context Sensitive Optical Character Recognition Using Neural Networks And Hidden Markov Models, Steven C. Elliott Jan 1992

Context Sensitive Optical Character Recognition Using Neural Networks And Hidden Markov Models, Steven C. Elliott

Theses

This thesis investigates a method for using contextual information in text recognition. This is based on the premise that, while reading, humans recognize words with missing or garbled characters by examining the surrounding characters and then selecting the appropriate character. The correct character is chosen based on an inherent knowledge of the language and spelling techniques. We can then model this statistically. The approach taken by this Thesis is to combine feature extraction techniques, Neural Networks and Hidden Markov Modeling. This method of character recognition involves a three step process: pixel image preprocessing, neural network classification and context interpretation. Pixel …

A Simplified Drive-Reinforcement Model For Unsupervised Learning In Artificial Neural Networks, David B. Suits Jan 1992

A Simplified Drive-Reinforcement Model For Unsupervised Learning In Artificial Neural Networks, David B. Suits

Theses

Partly in response to the apparent limitations of explicit symbol processing used by traditional artificial intelligence research, there has been, within the last decade, a growing interest in artificial neural networks. This thesis focuses on the development and testing of a model for describing certain kinds of biological phenomena. The many artificial neural networks available may be classified into three types: (1) self-organizing networks, which have input but no feedback; (2) unsupervised networks, requiring minimal feedback (perhaps a signal indicating success or failure); and (3) supervised models, which employ far more extensive (and, I think, biologically implausible) feedback mechanisms. In …

User Characteristics In Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Michelle Buckenmeyer Jan 1992

User Characteristics In Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Michelle Buckenmeyer

Theses

The development of individualized educational environments, to facilitate learning for the diverse population of students in today's secondary school system, has become more prevalent with the increased ease of access to computers that many schools are now enjoying. The use of Computer Aided Instruction is becoming more common as a means for individual tutoring. This thesis explores the problem of individualizing this instruction by analyzing the relationship between preferred teaching methods and computer users" personality types, as defined by the Myers-Briggs type indicator and two other "unscientific" user characteristics. The preferred teaching method was analyzed using various criteria, including user …

Grain Size Effect On The Induced Piezoelectric Properties Of 0.9pmn-0.1pt Ceramic, U. Kumar, Wayne Huebner, P. Marsh, H. Kankul, S. F. Wang, Clyde G. Oakley

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 - PbTiO3 (PT) solid solutions have been widely researched to produce devices that can be used in low- and high-electric-field applications. For some applications, such as medical ultrasonic transducers, it is necessary to prepare the ceramic with high density and small average grain size. The effect of grain size on the low- and high-field properties of 0.9-PMN-0.10-PT ceramics is described in the present work. To prepare highly dense ceramic, vibratory and attrition milled powders were sintered between 1000 and 1250 ⁰C. The average grain sizes of the sintered ceramics …

Biological damages such as mutations, chromosomal aberrations etc. are consequence of biochemical changes mostly in the DNA /1/. With ionizing radiation, these chemical changes are due to primary ionization events and secondary ionization effects caused by the primarily produced electrons. Differences in the biological response of densely ionizing radiation, like heavy charged particles, in comparison to sparsely ionizing radiation, such as X- or γ-rays, are mainly due to the differences in the productions of the so called δ-electrons. Therefore, the emission process of electrons i.e., the cross section for the primary ionization event as well as the energy and angular …

Homogeneous Nucleation Of Liquid From The Vapor Phase In An Expansion Cloud Chamber, John L. Schmitt Jan 1992

Homogeneous Nucleation Of Liquid From The Vapor Phase In An Expansion Cloud Chamber, John L. Schmitt

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Wilson expansion cloud chamber has been used to measure the homogeneous vapor-to-liquid nucleation of several materials over the past decade. These data, representing nucleation rate as a function of temperature and supersaturation ratio for toluene, nonane, and water measured in our center, have been re-examined and are presented both in graphical form and as a table of selected data points. The latter is included for ease of comparison with theory. Measurements of the binary homogeneous nucleation of ethanol-water (E-W) mixtures are also presented. The expansion chamber experimental technique and data reduction technique are discussed.

Triple-differential ionization cross sections 3 pdcphipdprec, the momentum distributions of singly charged recoil ions transverse to the beam direction as a function of the projectile polar (p), and azimuthal (cphip) scattering angle were measured in order to elucidate the dynamics of 3-MeV H+ on He single ionization. For projectile polar deflections 0.2 p1 mrad and azimuthal scattering angles 0°cphip360°, the kinematic regimes where two-body interactions dominate the three-body momentum exchange of the single-ionization reaction were separated experimentally. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Plasma As A High-Charge-State Projectile Stripping Medium, G. D. Alton, R. A. Sparrow, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1992

Plasma As A High-Charge-State Projectile Stripping Medium, G. D. Alton, R. A. Sparrow, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The classical trajectory Monte Carlo model has been used to computationally study the charge-state distributions that result from interactions between a high-energy, multielectron projectile and neutral and fully ionized targets. These studies are designed to determine the properties of a plasma for producing highly stripped ions as a possible alternative to gas and foil strippers that are commonly used to enhance the charge states of energetic ion beams. The results of these studies clearly show that a low-atomic-number, highly ionized plasma can yield higher charge states than a neutral target of the same density. The effect is principally attributable to …
