A literature review was conducted to identify some of the requirements for competitiveness and change that are being promoted by leaders in the manufacturing field. A survey was developed based on the literature review and was subsequently administered, via the case study method, at a midwestern US agricultural chemicals firm to determine the company's degree of compliance with the literature''s recommendations. To a large degree, the company complied with the requirements.

An approach that integrates artificial neural networks and optimization methods for automating regularly-shaped pattern generation processes is proposed. In the proposed approach the artificial neural network model is used for generating rectangular pattern configurations with an acceptable scrap. Rectangular patterns of different sizes are used as the input of the neural network to generate location and rotation of each pattern when they are combined. An adaptive resonance (ART) device has been conceived that is fully optical in the input-output processing path. It is based on holographic information processing in a phase-conjugating crystal. This sets up an associative pattern retrieval in a resonating loop utilizing angle-multiplexed reference beams for pattern classification. A reset mechanism is used to reject any given beam, allowing an ART search strategy. The design is similar to an existing nonlearning optical associative memory, but it does allow learning and makes use of information the other device discards. This device is expected to offer higher information storage density than alternative ART implementations.

A graphics-oriented, primarily PC-based tool for education, research, and training in power engineering is introduced. The tool, called COPERITE, has all user interfaces resident on an IBM-386 microcomputer. Menus and windows are used for the interface, and attractive graphical representations and displays are included. Application programs that are interfaced are power flow, contingency analysis, economic dispatch, security-constrained dispatch, system stability, and fault analysis. These programs are executed on a VAX 8800 computer mainly for speed of execution. The glow discharge of a series of saturated fluorocarbons, C_nF_2n+2 (n = 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8), was studied with glass substrates which do not contain any hydrogen. It was found that the deposition rate was a function of the F/C ratio of the starting fluorocarbons. That is, fluorocarbons with higher F/C ratio, such as CF₄ and C₂F₆, hardly polymerized, while fluorocarbons with lower F/C ratio, such as C₈F₁₈, polymerized as well as C₂F₄. In the thirty-year period preceding the American Civil War, some southern politicians advocated disunion. Prominent among these was a young lawyer from Columbus, Georgia, Henry Lewis Benning. Ambitious and keen on rising within planter society, Benning married well and used his position to further his political aims. Early in his career, Benning would be identified with the fire-eaters who preached disunion as a means of solving the South's problems. As a delegate to the several secession conventions, Henry Benning lent his organizational skills to promoting secession. This study was an investigative comparison of free writing topic choices between the genders. For the purposes of this study, twenty male and twenty female subjects were randomly selected from the seventh grade population of a junior high.

Over a period of four weeks, ten free writing samples were collected from each student's writing journal. Each sample was analyzed and placed in its appropriate category on Graves' Territorial Distribution Scale of Thematic Choices. A frequency count was conducted. Frequencies between the genders' topic choices were compared using a Chi Square test of significance. The Chi Square Analysis showed no significant …

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Interpretative Team for the Fourth Mathematics Assessment of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) (Silver, Lindquist, Carpenter, Brown, Kouba, and Swafford, 1988) reports that performance levels for thirteen year-olds has not changed between the last two assessments. At the same time seventeen year-olds have made significant gains (Silver et al., 1988). The Interpretative Team cautions that the seventeen year-old population which made gains was the population that showed gains as thirteen year-olds. Eighteen sixth-grade students in a selected elementary school of a large school district were chosen to participate in a study to individually assess and describe their use of number sense, which demonstrated their understanding of mathematics concepts. The instrument used was teacher made and consisted of nine mathematics problems. The instrument was given to each student in a one-on-one interview. The findings suggested that developing number sense is essential for improving mathematics performance.

Behavior disordered and emotionally disturbed students entering a unique school environment as a part of a therapeutic residential treatment center are faced with many difficult adjustments. These students traditionally have more problems coping with stressful situations than ''normal" students. Research on adjustment and student handbooks indicates that an appropriate orientation to a new program which includes a clear definition of goals and expectations has a positive effect on emotional and psychological adjustment of new students.

Twelve seventh-grade students in a selected county in Georgia served as subjects for interviews to determine why students choose realistic topics when writing fiction stories. The interviews revealed that the students wrote stories that reflected a part of their personal lives. The stories involved the authors in three distinct ways. Some stories were experiential and represented something that had happened to the author; others were experiential, but the writer had witnessed the event happening to an acquaintance; finally, media had influenced the writer to follow a story line. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the effects of a literature-based approach to teaching reading on student attitudes toward reading. Relatively few studies have been conducted to describe students' attitudes toward reading in a literature-based approach which includes the following: the use of children's literature, silent reading by students and teachers, expressive reading by the teacher, and various book-sharing activities and projects. Four seventh-grade reading classes at Faith Middle School were randomly selected to participate as subjects. Thalamic Strokes in 62 Patients Selected from the Stroke Data Bank Were Studied to Determine Differences among 18 Infarctions (INF), 23 Localized Hemorrhages (ICH), and 21 Hematomas with Ventricular Extension (IVH). Stupor or Coma at Onset Occurred More Frequently in the IVH (62%) Than in the INF (6%) or ICH (13%) Groups and Was Reflected in Significantly Lower Median Glasgow Coma Scores in the IVH Group (7) Than in the INF (15) and ICH (14) Groups. Although Ocular Movements Were More Frequently Abnormal in the IVH Group Compared with the ICH and INF Groups, No Significant Differences Were Found in …

Spectra of energetic protons and deuterons emitted following negative muon capture from rest in ³He have been measured for the first time. Significant capture strength is observed at high energy transfers (mμ- E_v >60 MeV) for the two-body and three-body breakup channels, indicative of the importance of nucleon-nucleon correlations and meson exchange currents in the capture process. A simple plane wave impulse approximation calculation reproduces the proton spectrum reasonably well, but underpredicts the deuteron rate at the highest energies by a large factor.

This research explored, described, and related the experiences of gay and lesbian undergraduate students on one campus to existing theories of gay identity development. A sample of gay and lesbian students were interviewed, resulting in prevalent themes. The themes included campus climate, career concerns, classroom experiences, "coming out" experiences, fathers and mothers, first experiences, first relationships, gay men about gay men, on being "out of the closet," other-acceptance, parents, reasons for gayness, religion, and self-acceptance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been widely used to characterize rates and mechanisms during electrochemical processes. In this study, EIS was employed to probe the behavior for simulated galvanic coupling of a carbon fiber/polymer matrix composite in the marine environment. In a later study the effect of cathodic 10n plating and ion implantation of 304 stainless steel on its corrosion behavior was examined.

The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) has demonstrated its usefulness on a nanometer scale surpassing the resolution of conventional profilometers and optical microscopes. The principle of operation and the instrumentation design of the AFM, as well as some application aspects, are described. Emphasis is placed on the imaging mode of the force microscopy in the regime of attractive forces. X‐Ray Powder Diffraction Structural Phase‐Transition Study Of La(Cr1‐Xmnx)O3 (X = 0 To 0.25) Using The Rietveld Method Of Analysis, Scott A. Howard, Jen‐Kuan ‐K Yau, Harlan U. Anderson

The La(Cr_1‐xMn_x)O₃ (x = 0 to 0.25) system exhibited a displacive phase transformation from an orthorhombic to a rhombohedral structure at temperatures ranging from about 256°C at x= 0 to 305°C at x= 0.25. The Rietveld method of X‐ray analysis was used to determine structural characteristics and to assay phase concentrations when multiple phases were present. Indications were that the Mn ions on the B site affected the transition temperature through an ionic size effect; i.e., Mn³⁺, with a larger ionic size than Cr³⁺, increased the transition temperature while the presence …
