Deterministic And Probabilistic Analysis Of The Safety Of Coal Refuse Disposal Facilities., Shi-Chieh Jonathan Cheng Jan 1992

Deterministic And Probabilistic Analysis Of The Safety Of Coal Refuse Disposal Facilities., Shi-Chieh Jonathan Cheng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to develop a probabilistic technique in evaluating the stability of coal refuse disposal facilities. A review of coal refuse disposal and the variability associated with coal refuse have been presented. The causes of variability both in soil and coal refuse were discussed in detail, and the extent of variability of coal refuse properties were studied. A probabilistic approach named PEM was incorporated to determine the reliability and assess the probability of low factor of safety of coal refuse disposal facilities. A computer model based on the Simplified Bishop Method and PEM principles had been …

Marine Paleocommunities And Paleoenvironments Of The Upper Mississippian Bluefield Formation In Southern West Virginia., Cranston Christian Christopher Jan 1992

Marine Paleocommunities And Paleoenvironments Of The Upper Mississippian Bluefield Formation In Southern West Virginia., Cranston Christian Christopher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Six communities were recognized from the Chesterian age Bluefield Formation in southern West Virginia. These communities were distributed in a wide range of environments from intertidal to open marine. Bivalve communities dominated the shallow intertidal to nearshore environments and the brachiopod and echinoderm communities dominated the shallow and open marine environments. Statistical analyses including cluster, multidimensional scaling, and discriminant analysis were most effective and were used to interpret vertical and spatial distributions of the communities. Vertical changes in fauna were more common between several units of the Bluefield, and to a lesser extent within a particular unit. Faunal changes between …

Coanda Effect Jet Around A Cylinder With An Interacting Adjacent Surface., Randolph Allen Churchill Jan 1992

Coanda Effect Jet Around A Cylinder With An Interacting Adjacent Surface., Randolph Allen Churchill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The effects of placing a plane solid surface in close proximity to a Coanda effect jet turning over a cylindrical surface are investigated to help judge the possible application of this type of jet to manufacturing line processes. The Coanda jet is proposed as a coating control mechanism for fluidic coatings on sheets or a particulate removal device. A Coanda jet placed close to a surface will develop a strong tangential flow that will shear by viscous effects and pressure gradients. A turbulent k-{dollar}\\varepsilon{dollar} finite element model, developed in FIDAP, is presented that studies the effects of cylinder-sheet separation distance …

Effect Of Washington State Visitor Information Centers On Travel Behavior, Edward Udd, Georgia Hulac, Michael A. Blazey Jan 1992

Effect Of Washington State Visitor Information Centers On Travel Behavior, Edward Udd, Georgia Hulac, Michael A. Blazey

Visions in Leisure and Business

Profiles of visitors to Visitor Information Centers abound in the literature. However, little is known about the impact of these Visitor Information Centers on travel behavior. This study looked at individuals who stopped at a Washington State Visitor Information Center, picked up a questionnaire, and then returned their questionnaires after completing their trip. For the population that returned questionnaires the following influences from the information received were reported: 1) a little over 20% increase the length of their stay 2) almost 40% indicated they were influenced about destinations and attractions they visited 3) about 16% were influenced on their accommodations …

The College-Educated Older Adult Traveler: A Travel-Specific Psychographic Profile, Deborah L. Kerstetter Jan 1992

The College-Educated Older Adult Traveler: A Travel-Specific Psychographic Profile, Deborah L. Kerstetter

Visions in Leisure and Business

The potential number of individuals in older age groups who may have the capacity to enjoy travel as a leisure pursuit is staggering. Yet, little is known about a subgroup of this population, college-educated individuals 55 to 64 years of age (older adults), specifically with respect to their attitudes, interests and opinions towards pleasure travel. In addition, little attention has been devoted to international travel which is of interest to 28% of the 55 and older market. Thus, this investigation identified whether college-educated older adults who travel internationally differ from those who do not with respect to their attitudes, interests …

Factors Affecting Interval Resort Vacation Enjoyment, Lynn Masterson Jan 1992

Factors Affecting Interval Resort Vacation Enjoyment, Lynn Masterson

Visions in Leisure and Business

The purpose of this study was to examine the interval vacation industry and to identify the key soft amenity factors that impact the vacation enjoyment of the owners. The methodology used in this study provides a unique perspective on key interval vacation attributes. The open-ended format used to generate the key vacation attributes identified several unique dimensions, especially for the interval vacationer. Interval vacation owners rated clean, functioning recreation areas most important to their vacation satisfaction--but 4 of the top 5 attributes focused on interactions between owners and staff. Results showed that communication, a vital link in any management equation, …
