Empirical Relations Between Static And Dynamic Exponents For Ising Model Cluster Algorithms, Paul D. Coddington, Clive F. Baillie Jan 1992

Empirical Relations Between Static And Dynamic Exponents For Ising Model Cluster Algorithms, Paul D. Coddington, Clive F. Baillie

Physics - All Scholarship

We have measured the autocorrelations for the Swendsen-Wang and the Wolff cluster update algorithms for the Ising model in 2, 3 and 4 dimensions. The data for the Wolff algorithm suggest that the autocorrelations are linearly related to the specific heat, in which case the dynamic critical exponent zW int,E = α/ν. For the Swendsen-Wang algorithm, scaling the autocorrelations by the average maximum cluster size gives either a constant or a logarithm, which implies that zSW int,E = β/ν for the Ising model.

German Jewish Refugee Lawyers Abroad: The Bonn Conference Of 1991, M. H. Hoeflich

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

During World War I, Jews were allowed to serve in the German armed forces. Gradually Jews were permitted to practice the professions, including law. By the time of the establishment of the Weimar Republic after the war, Jewish lawyers had assumed a major role in the profession and were amongst the most well-known practitioners and law professors. With the accession to power of Hitler and the National Socialist party in the 1930s, however, things changed radically. They were deprived of their rights and dismissed from their jobs. During the period from 1933 to 1941, when escape became impossible, a few …

Investing In Democracy: Joint Venture Opportunities In The Czech And Slovak Federal Republic, Kristina Smith

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

The purpose of this Note is to assess the potential for successful business ventures in the C.S.F.R. in relation to the 1990 amendments to the Act. This Note will first discuss the needs and concerns of U.S. business persons who, until now, have been hesitant to join their Western European counterparts in establishing a business presence in the Eastern European marketplace. It will then analyze the Act and determine whether the 1990 amendments sufficiently remove traditional legal barriers to foreign equity investment in the C.S.F.R. Finally, this Note concludes that there are numerous economic and political measures, embodied in both …

Molecular Basis Of Loss-Of-Function Mutations In The Glp-1 Gene Of Caenorhabitis Elegans, Voula Kodoyianni, Eleanor M. Maine, Judith Kimble Jan 1992

Molecular Basis Of Loss-Of-Function Mutations In The Glp-1 Gene Of Caenorhabitis Elegans, Voula Kodoyianni, Eleanor M. Maine, Judith Kimble

Biology - All Scholarship

The glp-1 gene encodes a membrane protein required for inductive cell interactions during development of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Here we report the molecular characterization of 15 loss-of-function (lf) mutations of glp-1. Two nonsense mutations appear to eliminate glp-1 activity; both truncate the glp-1 protein in its extracellular domain and have a strong loss-of-function phenotype. Twelve missense mutations and one in-frame deletion map to sites within the repeated motifs of the glp-1 protein (10 epidermal growth factor [EFG]-like and 3 LNG repeats extracellularly and 6 cdc10/SW16, or ankyrin, repeats intracellularly). We find that all three types of repeated motifs are …

Ecological History, Catastrophism, And Human Impact On The Mississippi/Alabama Continental Shelf And Associated Waters: A Review, Rezneat M. Darnell

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The Mississippi/Alabama continental shelf and associated coastal waters together form a complex ecological system of interrelated parts. The biological system of the area has become established during the period of sea level rise following the last continental glacial maximum about 18,000 years ago. Contemporary biological populations of the inshore waters are subject to episodic catastrophic events caused by exceptional cold fronts, flooding, major storms, hypoxia, red tide outbreaks, and major droughts. Most of these events are not known to affect the shelf populations directly, but indirect effects through food chain disruptions are likely. Loop Current intrusions and entrainment of deep …

Larval Development Of Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Artificial Diet Incorporating Leaf Tissues Of Sorghum Lines In Relation To Their Resistance Or Susceptibility, Kailash Narain Saxena

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This study was taken up to examine the relationship between the susceptibility or resistance of six sorghum lines to Chilo partellus and dietary quality of their leaf tissues, incorporated in an artificial diet, to support larval development. The diets tested were agar based basic medium with or without cellulose powder, dry leaf powder or fresh leaf-paste of the sorghum lines. The basic medium alone or with cellulose powder showed the poorest dietary quality in-as-much as it did not support more than 26–32% larval development. The tolerant sorghum IS 18520 leaf tissues, incorporated in the artificial diet as dry powder or …

Trypanosome Infection Rates In Tsetse Flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) And Cattle During Tsetse Control Operations In The Kagera River Region Of Rwanda, Steve Mihok, Leonard H. Otieno, Christopher S. Tarimo Jan 1992

Trypanosome Infection Rates In Tsetse Flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) And Cattle During Tsetse Control Operations In The Kagera River Region Of Rwanda, Steve Mihok, Leonard H. Otieno, Christopher S. Tarimo

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Trypanosome infections were monitored in three species of tsetse fly (Glossina pallidipes Austen, G. morsitans centralis Machado, and G. brevipalpis News-tead) at four locations in the Kagera River region of Rwanda from May 1989 to September 1990. Two of the four areas (Mpanga Ranch and Bukora Ranch) were subjected to tsetse fly suppression operations with odour-baited traps. Proboscis infections of the Trypanosoma congolense and T. vivax types accounted for roughly equal numbers of the 207 mature infections detected (3.8%). Variation in infection rates was area-specific rather than tsetse species-specific. Order of magnitude differences in tsetse fly densities among areas were …

Laboratory And Field Observations On Anti-Tick Properties Of The Plant Gynandropsis Gynandra (L.) Brig, M. M. Malonza, O. O. Dipeolu, A. O. Amoo, S. M. Hassan

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A shrubby plant, abundant in east Kenya, Gynandropsis gynandra (L.) Brig., was shown to exhibit repellent and acaricidal properties to larvae, nymphs and adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum ticks. All stages of ticks avoided the leaves of the plant and a high percentage of the ticks which were continuously exposed to its leaves died; surviving ticks were weak and inactive but regained activity when exposed to fresh air. The effectiveness of the plant's leaves as a repellent and acaricide was most pronounced on nymphs and least pronounced on adults. Field investigations indicated that ticks were not found up to …
