The World Of Kavanagh And Cottril: A Portrait Of Irish Emigration, Entrepreneurship, And Ethnic Diversity In Mid-Maine, 1760-1820, Edward Thomas Mccarron

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines a remarkable and little known episode in the peopling of early New England: The founding of an Irish-Catholic community in Lincoln County, Maine, 1760- 1820. It details the experience of over three hundred Irish families, tracing them to their Old World origins, following their progress across the Atlantic, and documenting their efforts to establish an ethnic and religious identity on the Maine frontier.

Their story parallels the lives of two immigrants, James Kavanagh and Matthew Cottril, who made a fortune in the Maine timber trade and encouraged kin and countrymen to settle in tne new land. Their …

On Defining Academic Scholarship, Stephen J. Werber Jan 1992

On Defining Academic Scholarship, Stephen J. Werber

Cleveland State Law Review

This article seeks to find a definition of “scholarship.” Scholarship, to be fully recognized in the academic community, must address the theory of law - not its application. The basic premise of this essay is that such a definition of scholarship is detrimental to the law teaching profession and demeaning of the legal profession as a whole. As in the sciences, there is a need for both theoretical scholarship and applied scholarship. Both should be recognized as contributing to the overall knowledge, development, and beauty of the law as well as to the justice that that law seeks to achieve.

Teaching About Justice Through Creative Strategies, Anthony G. Amsterdam Jan 1992

Teaching About Justice Through Creative Strategies, Anthony G. Amsterdam

Cleveland State Law Review

When discussing justice, it helps us to look at our legal institutions from outside the narrow, closed circle in which most of us operate most of the time or believe we operate. Part of the problem is that all of our legal institutions and much of our rationality are the products of an evolution that is only several thousand years old. But we have a set of instincts and a neurological system that have evolved over more than a million and a half years. Human beings became human and they still live in the shadow of the cave. Our instinct …

Nurturing The Impulse For Justice, Lynne Henderson Jan 1992

Nurturing The Impulse For Justice, Lynne Henderson

Cleveland State Law Review

By dwelling on doctrine and appellate case analysis we too often lose sight of the underlying assumptions behind the law and the social consequences of the law. By doing so we fail to give students even a glimmer of understanding as to what they need to know to fight injustice effectively. We spend much classroom time rationalizing the real and evading difficult questions of social justice. We do almost nothing to help our students develop any sense of justice or injustice or ways of identifying how the law produces justice and injustice. Let me work through an example of how …

Entail In Two Cities: A Comparative Study Of Long Term Leases In Birmingham, England And Baltimore, Maryland 1700-1900, Garrett Power Jan 1992

Entail In Two Cities: A Comparative Study Of Long Term Leases In Birmingham, England And Baltimore, Maryland 1700-1900, Garrett Power

Faculty Scholarship

Urban planning is often thought of as a conscious collection of governmental choices made as to the shape and social structure of the city. Thoughtful and forward looking public policies are viewed as mapping out the future. Overlooked or understated in this estimation are the less purposeful influences on the urban morphology and city sociology. This paper examines one such influence, land tenure, by taking a comparative look at the residential development of Birmingham, England, and Baltimore, Maryland, between 1700 and 1900. Birmingham and Baltimore both housed their working class populations in densely-packed dwellings with shared party walls. And both …

Consideration Of Phase Transformations In The Study Of Shear Bands In A Dynamically Loaded Steel Block, Z. G. Zhu, R. C. Batra Jan 1992

Consideration Of Phase Transformations In The Study Of Shear Bands In A Dynamically Loaded Steel Block, Z. G. Zhu, R. C. Batra

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study plane strain thermomechanical deformations of a square block made of steel and model a material defect in it by a rigid non-heat-conducting ellipsoidal inclusion located at the center of the block. The boundaries of the block are presumed to be thermally insulated, and its top and bottom surfaces compressed vertically at a prescribed rate. The loading pulse is assumed to be made up of three parts; an initial segment in which the speed increases from zero to the steady value, the steady part, and the third part in which the speed decreases gradually to zero and is maintained …

Unitary One Matrix Models: String Equation And Flows, Konstantinos N. Anagnostopoulos, Mark Bowick Jan 1992

Unitary One Matrix Models: String Equation And Flows, Konstantinos N. Anagnostopoulos, Mark Bowick

Physics - All Scholarship

We review the Symmetric Unitary One Matrix Models. In particular we discuss the string equation in the operator formalism, the mKdV flows and the Virasoro Constraints. We focus on the -function formalism for the flows and we describe its connection to the (big cell of the) Sato Grassmannian Gr (0) via the Plucker embedding of Gr (0) into a fermionic Fock space. Then the space of solutions to the string equation is an explicitly computable subspace of Gr (0) \Theta Gr (0) which is invariant under the flows.

Software Support For Irregular And Loosely Synchronous Problems, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox, Sanja Ranka, Seema Hiranandani Jan 1992

Software Support For Irregular And Loosely Synchronous Problems, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox, Sanja Ranka, Seema Hiranandani

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

A large class of scientific and engineering applications may be classified as irregular and loosely synchronous from the perspective of parallel processing. We present a partial classification of such problems. This classification has motivated us to enhance Fortran D to provide language support for irregular, loosely synchronous problems. We present techniques for parallelization of such problems in the context of Fortran D.

Scheduling Regular And Irregular Communication Patterns On The Cm-5, Ravi Ponnusamy, Rajeev Thakur, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 1992

Scheduling Regular And Irregular Communication Patterns On The Cm-5, Ravi Ponnusamy, Rajeev Thakur, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

In this paper, we study the communication characteristics of the CM-5 and the performance effects of scheduling regular and irregular communication patterns on the CM-5. We consider the scheduling of regular communication patterns such as complete exchange and broadcast. We have implemented four algorithms for complete exchange and studied their performances on a 2D FFT algorithm. We have also implemented four algorithms for scheduling irregular communication patterns and studied their performance on the communication patterns of several synthetic as well as real problems such as the conjugate gradient solver and the Euler solver.

Which Applications Can Use High Performance Fortran And Fortran-D: Industry Standard Data Parallel Languages?, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox, Tomasz Haupt, S. Ranka

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

In this paper, we present the first, preliminary results of HPF/Fortran-D language analysis based on compiling and running benchmark applications using a prototype implementation of HPF/Fortran-D compiler. The analysis indicate that the HPF is a very convenient tool for programming many applications on massively parallel and/or distributed systems. In addition, we cumulate experience on how to parallelize irregular problems to extend the scope of Fortran-D beyond HPF and suggest future extensions to the Fortran standard.

Compiling Distribution Directives In A Fortran 90d Compiler, Zeki Bozkus, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox, Sanjay Ranka Jan 1992

Compiling Distribution Directives In A Fortran 90d Compiler, Zeki Bozkus, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox, Sanjay Ranka

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Data Partitioning and mapping is one of the most important steps of in writing a parallel program; especially data parallel one. Recently, Fortran D, and subsequently, High Performance Fortran (HPF) have been proposed to allow users to specify data distributions and alignments for arrays in programs. This paper presents the design of a Fortran 90D compiler that takes a Fortran 90D program as input and produces a node program + message passing calls for distributed memory machines. Specifically, we present the design of the Data Partitioning Module that processes the alignment and distribution directives and illustrate what are the important …

Translational Correlations In The Vortex Array At The Surface Of A Type-Ii Superconductor, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson Jan 1992

Translational Correlations In The Vortex Array At The Surface Of A Type-Ii Superconductor, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson

Physics - All Scholarship

We discuss the statistical mechanics of magnetic flux lines in a finite-thickness slab of type-II superconductor. The long wavelength properties of a flux-line liquid in a slab geometry are described by a hydrodynamic free energy that incorporates the boundary conditions on the flux lines at the sample's surface as a surface contribution to the free energy. Bulk and surface weak disorder are modeled via Gaussian impurity potentials. This free energy is used to evaluate the two-dimensional structure factor of the flux-line tips at the sample surface. We find that surface interaction always dominates in determining the decay of translational correlations …

Empirical Relations Between Static And Dynamic Exponents For Ising Model Cluster Algorithms, Paul D. Coddington, Clive F. Baillie Jan 1992

Empirical Relations Between Static And Dynamic Exponents For Ising Model Cluster Algorithms, Paul D. Coddington, Clive F. Baillie

Physics - All Scholarship

We have measured the autocorrelations for the Swendsen-Wang and the Wolff cluster update algorithms for the Ising model in 2, 3 and 4 dimensions. The data for the Wolff algorithm suggest that the autocorrelations are linearly related to the specific heat, in which case the dynamic critical exponent zW int,E = α/ν. For the Swendsen-Wang algorithm, scaling the autocorrelations by the average maximum cluster size gives either a constant or a logarithm, which implies that zSW int,E = β/ν for the Ising model.
