Ray's phenomenological method was used to describe and identify themes and to construct the meaning of excellence in nursing practice experience as used in the language by nurses. Registered nurses were interviewed by using an open-ended question technique. In addition, audiotape was employed, and the interviews were transcribed to text. …

A Conspiracy Of Caring: The Meaning Of The Client's Experience Of Nursing As The Promotion Of Well-Being, Cathie L. Wallace Jan 1992

A Conspiracy Of Caring: The Meaning Of The Client's Experience Of Nursing As The Promotion Of Well-Being, Cathie L. Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This research explored the client's experience of nursing as the promotion of well-being. The question guiding the study was: What is the meaning of nursing as the promotion of well-being? Using a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach, eight participants described their experiences of the phenomenon. Three metathemes emerged and expressed nursing as the promotion of well-being: (1) Being There Conveys a Willingness to Relate; (2) Being With Enables the Feeling of Comfort; and (3) Being in Tune While Creating the Future. Further analysis led to the apprehension of a unity of meaning: An Emancipating Togetherness--The Creation of a Caring Synchrony that Empowers a …

Argument Structure Preference And Phrase Structure Effects During Sentence Processing, Harold Nicholas Nagel Jan 1992

Argument Structure Preference And Phrase Structure Effects During Sentence Processing, Harold Nicholas Nagel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This project investigates how subjects' preferences for a specific argument structure of a verb affect the on-line processing of sentences. Three experiments are conducted. The first experiment uses a forced choice task to gather preference ratings for several verbs. The second and third experiments use these preference ratings to examine on-line performance for a subset of the subjects participating in Experiment I. We find that a subject's preference for a specific argument structure influences the first pass analysis of sentence but that this effect may be overridden by a structural effect in sentences containing syntactic ambiguities. These results are discussed …

Derivation And Identification Of Linearly Parametrized Robot Manipulator Dynamic Models, Hua. Xu Jan 1992

Derivation And Identification Of Linearly Parametrized Robot Manipulator Dynamic Models, Hua. Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The dissertation focuses on robot manipulator dynamic modeling, and inertial and kinematic parameters identification problem. An automatic dynamic parameters derivation symbolic algorithm is presented. This algorithm provides the linearly independent dynamic parameters set. It is shown that all the dynamic parameters are identifiable when the trajectory is persistently exciting. The parameters set satisfies the necessary condition of finding a persistently exciting trajectory. Since in practice the system data matrix is corrupted with noise, conventional estimation methods do not converge to the true values. An error bound is given for Kalman filters. Total least squares method is introduced to obtain unbiased …
