The purpose of this study was to describe how nurses in middle-management positions rate caring attributes of nursing staff. A convenience sample of 99 nurses from three acute-care hospitals was asked to rate caring attributes of nursing staff using the Nyberg Caring Assessment Scale, a 20 item 5-point Likert scale instrument. Fifty-nine nurses in the sample volunteered to participate in the study. Participants rated the attribute communicating a helping, trusting attitude toward others as extremely important, and the attribute consider relationships before rules as somewhat important. The aim of this research was to study the coordinative dynamics of multijoint arm movements as a function of forearm spatial orientation. Six subjects rhythmically coordinated flexion and extension of the right elbow and wrist under the following conditions: (1) forearm supine: wrist flexion/elbow flexion and vice versa; and (2) forearm prone: wrist flexion/elbow extension and vice versa. Starting in either pattern, subjects rotated the forearm in eight 20 steps, producing 15 cycles of motion at a frequency of 1.25 Hz. The dissertation focuses on robot manipulator dynamic modeling, and inertial and kinematic parameters identification problem. An automatic dynamic parameters derivation symbolic algorithm is presented. This algorithm provides the linearly independent dynamic parameters set. It is shown that all the dynamic parameters are identifiable when the trajectory is persistently exciting. The parameters set satisfies the necessary condition of finding a persistently exciting trajectory. Since in practice the system data matrix is corrupted with noise, conventional estimation methods do not converge to the true values. An error bound is given for Kalman filters. The purpose of this research study was to explore the academic effectiveness of a dropout prevention science course code modification (Environmental Earth Science) when compared with the regular dropout prevention course (Fundamental Earth/Space Science). Academic achievement of at-risk students enrolled in both the regular and the course modification class was measured by their performance on two subscales (process and recall skills) of the district's achievement test in Fundamental Earth/Space and Fundamental Environmental Science. The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tendencies of several engineering alloys were studied in an acidified seawater environment as a function of applied strain rate and electrolyte temperature. The selected alloys included austenitic stainless steels 304L, 316L, 904L and A-286 (an iron-based superalloy at two heat treatments yielding ultimate tensile strengths of 130 and 200 ksi), Inconel 718 (220 ksi ultimate tensile strength) and Hastelloys C-22 and C-276. The slow strain rate test technique was used to evaluate the SCC strain rate dependency of each alloy at extension rates of 4.7 x 10^-6, 4.7 x 10^-4 and 4.7 x 10^-3 mm/sec. …

Prenatal exposure to cocaine has been associated with a variety of deleterious effects on human infants. In this study, several measures were examined using the rat as a model of the clinical effects found in children of cocaine-abusing mothers. Infant rats exposed to 40 mg/kg during gestation via injections to their dam do not differ from nutritional and saline controls on such measures as body weight, age of eye opening, latency to attach to a nipple, and preference for a home odor. However, cocaine exposed pups show significantly suppressed levels of play and are more submissive in a play encounter …

Rodgers' (1989) evolutionary method of concept analysis was used to clarify the meaning of empower. This method was further developed to be congruent with the new processual paradigm foundational for this study. This thesis presents the design of a fault detection and diagnosis system for the T700 helicopter engine. Fault refers to a malfunction that degrades the performance of a system. Fault parameter estimation approach has been followed to accomplish this task along with the hypothesis testing for isolation purposes. Fault detection and diagnosis modules have been written in FORTRAN and run on-line with the engine simulation. Fault detection and diagnosis system has been tested for sensor bias, sensor multiplicative fault and bias in the actuation signal. The results of these experiments are displayed at the end.

The medieval tale's story is one of rational resistance to domination, even to that of a powerful and jealous husband. Griselda's ensuing struggle for self-liberation and "free will," by "looking within," echoes the neoplatonic and Boethian universal scheme: mutability transcends all Fortune. Edward Frederic Benson's Lucia novels are comic commentaries on social change and the fragmentation of English society from the end of the Edwardian era into the Georgian, especially reflecting the disenchantment of the English people with their traditional beliefs, roles, and class structure. What Matthew Arnold referred to as the Philistines of England--the newly-risen bourgeois--struggle to imitate the upper classes and to emulate their use of leisure time. Human subjects perform simple, relatively unconstrained, game-like computer tasks. "Meso-level" measures of behavioral complexity and time-dependencies (including entropies, grammatical complexity estimates and run statistics) are derived and computed. Individual behavioral differences in the resulting complexity measures are robust and, in a temporal-forcing paradigm, are statistically significantly related to the same individual's scores on a range of personality and demographic variables. Through an experimental manipulation and the statistical selection of maximally useful predictor sets personality and demographic variables are united in a "macro-level" temperament typology, based on "micro-level" behavioral tendencies. However, if the father is equally ineffectual, the child may seek outside sources to fill the parental void. Natural parents do not guarantee a nurturing atmosphere. Charles Dickens's novels exhibit this form of familial erosion over and over again; his substitutes for marginal mothers (and, consequently, failing fathers) are aunts and uncles, sisters, friends, sweethearts, employers, servants, and, in some cases, the child himself. A theory is developed to account for the emergence of the phenomenon of codependency. Codependency is targeted primarily at women since inequality constrains women from self-development outside relationships. It is argued that women experience relative deprivation and seek a socially acceptable way to avoid self-blame. Codependency's emergence in the late 1980s can be partly attributed to efforts of the recovery movement to secure legitimacy as agents of social control. The theory is tested by examining the emergence of the nineteenth-century illness called neurasthenia. It is argued that both codependency and neurasthenia are metaphors for female discontent. This thesis is concerned with nonlinear dynamical systems subject to random or combined random and deterministic excitations. To this end, a systematic procedure is first developed to obtain the exact stationary probability density for the response of a nonlinear system under both additive and multiplicative excitations of Gaussian white noises. This procedure is applicable to a class of systems called the class of generalized stationary potential. A photoluminescence (PL) study of Al(x)Ga(1-x)As/GaAs quantum wells (QWs) was undertaken at low temperature by using the HeNe laser. The temperature dependence of heavy hole exciton peak energies indicated that the PL signals are contributed by the recombination of excitons bound to interface defects at low temperature and the recombination of free excitons at high temperature. The temperature dependence of the PL profile of a single QW sample with growth interruption at the interfaces was successfully interpreted by the enlarged monolayer fluctuation. The linewidth of low temperature PL peaks was used to characterize the interfacial quality of QWs. The quality …

Predictive discriminant analysis was used to determine the existence of variable subsets that predicted success in practical nursing programs. Chi-square analysis was used to test the significance of differences between program completion rates of remediated and nonremediated groups of practical nursing students. Eight null hypotheses were tested. The subjects in this ex post facto study were the 362 practical nursing students who entered the Broward County Practical Nursing Program between April 1988 and August 1989. The subjects included 195 Black females, 138 White females, 11 Black males, and 18 White males. Approximately sixty percent (218) of the students completed the …

The purpose of the study was to come to understand the experience of a caring interaction between a single mother and the father of the baby. A qualitative study from a phenomenological perspective was used, with eleven participants being interviewed. Significant statements from the interviews were analyzed according to the four steps developed by Giorgi (1985). A description of the meaningful experience was obtained which includes the common themes of caring and non-caring. The themes and the implications for nursing practice are discussed.

The optical properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn1-x MnxS have been studied by using photoluminescence emission, lifetime and excitation spectroscopies. In photoluminescence spectroscopy three bands were found peaking at 585 nm (yellow band), 650 nm (orange band) and 750 nm (red band). For the yellow and red bands the peak position changes little with Mn concentration. For the orange band the peak energy decreases with increasing Mn concentration. The lifetimes of the yellow, orange and red bands were found to be about 70, 50 and 7 mus. The results of the lifetime measurements support the assumption that there is …

The band structure, density of states, Fermi surface, bulk modulus and heat of formation were calculated for beta prime-NiAl using the SCF-LMTO-ASA method. The equilibrium lattice constant was also determined by minimizing the total energy. The angle-resolved and x-ray photocurrents from the valence bands were determined using the NEWPOOL and XPSI codes and the calculated spectra were compared with recent experimental measurements. In the former case, the calculations were carried out for the (001) surface using s-polarized light and included the experimentally observed relaxations of the top two layers with an Al termination.
