Griselda And "Knowing Who You Are": "The Clerk's Tale" And The "Consolation Of Philosophy", James Nathan Kaufman
Griselda And "Knowing Who You Are": "The Clerk's Tale" And The "Consolation Of Philosophy", James Nathan Kaufman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The actions of Griselda, heroine of The Clerk's Tale, Chaucer's study of humanly and womanly forbearance, are mirrored throughout the classical wisdom of Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy. The medieval tale's story is one of rational resistance to domination, even to that of a powerful and jealous husband. Griselda's ensuing struggle for self-liberation and "free will," by "looking within," echoes the neoplatonic and Boethian universal scheme: mutability transcends all Fortune. Griselda finally arrives at knowing her own true nature, and the workings of Divine Providence.
Integrated Simulator Of Jit Manufacturing Process, Shuanghu. Li
Integrated Simulator Of Jit Manufacturing Process, Shuanghu. Li
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The main objective of this research is to develop an integrated simulator which would perform as a decision support system of a Just-in-Time manufacturing process. It would permit a process designer or manufacturing engineer with no simulation expertise to define the process variables, then run the simulation program. A secondary objective is to combine in one system the key functions required by a manufacturing engineer or manager, such as the operational (real time), statistical, and financial aspects. And also makes those function modules easy to understand and user-friendly. The integrated simulator can use animation to visualize an actual production line. …
Lucia Novels: E. F. Benson's Comic Reflections On English Social Change, Winifred Collins Brister
Lucia Novels: E. F. Benson's Comic Reflections On English Social Change, Winifred Collins Brister
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Edward Frederic Benson's Lucia novels are comic commentaries on social change and the fragmentation of English society from the end of the Edwardian era into the Georgian, especially reflecting the disenchantment of the English people with their traditional beliefs, roles, and class structure. What Matthew Arnold referred to as the Philistines of England--the newly-risen bourgeois--struggle to imitate the upper classes and to emulate their use of leisure time. Benson's characterizations of the villagers of Riseholme and Tilling match closely the descriptions of those Philistines; however, we cannot dislike them for their weaknesses. The positive change in the author's attitude toward …
Modeling And Measurement Of The Response Of Small Antennas Near Multilayered Two Or Three-Dimensional Dielectric Bodies, De Leon Lorenzo Angel Ponce
Modeling And Measurement Of The Response Of Small Antennas Near Multilayered Two Or Three-Dimensional Dielectric Bodies, De Leon Lorenzo Angel Ponce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
A theory of the circular loop antenna constructed from finite conductivity wire is developed via a Fourier series expansion of the currents in the loop. Models for a family of small loop antennas are also presented. A new high sensitivity and selectivity heterodyne fiber optic based electromagnetic field detector is developed compatible with open antenna range measurements made at low signal levels and in the presence of strong interfering signals. A new analytical solution pertaining to the response of a disk loaded dipole antenna representing a dipole configured on a lossy dielectric medium is developed using a field compensation theorem …
Mixing Properties In Human Behavioral Style And Time Dependencies In Behavior Identification: The Modeling And Application Of A Universal Dynamical Law, Karen A. Selz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Human subjects perform simple, relatively unconstrained, game-like computer tasks. "Meso-level" measures of behavioral complexity and time-dependencies (including entropies, grammatical complexity estimates and run statistics) are derived and computed. Individual behavioral differences in the resulting complexity measures are robust and, in a temporal-forcing paradigm, are statistically significantly related to the same individual's scores on a range of personality and demographic variables. Through an experimental manipulation and the statistical selection of maximally useful predictor sets personality and demographic variables are united in a "macro-level" temperament typology, based on "micro-level" behavioral tendencies. Further, I can compute a parameter value of a one dimensional …

Nature Vs. Nurture: Filling The Parental Vacuum In "Nicholas Nickleby", "David Copperfield" And "Great Expectations", Susan Donath Aguila
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
When a boy's mother is absent--either dead or lacking in the maternal graces--it is natural for him to look to his father for additional love and guidance. However, if the father is equally ineffectual, the child may seek outside sources to fill the parental void. Natural parents do not guarantee a nurturing atmosphere. Charles Dickens's novels exhibit this form of familial erosion over and over again; his substitutes for marginal mothers (and, consequently, failing fathers) are aunts and uncles, sisters, friends, sweethearts, employers, servants, and, in some cases, the child himself. Primary substitutes are not satisfactory either; Dickens's protagonists must …
Paradox Of John Cage, Juan Carlos Gonzalez
Paradox Of John Cage, Juan Carlos Gonzalez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
It has been said that John Cage has had a greater impact on world music than any other American composer in the 20th Century. His work spans the media of visual art, dance, literature, and most relevant to this study, theater. What seemed to be a troubled personal state in his life led him to Eastern philosophies. The Zen philosophy of non-intention led to the creation of music that expressed no emotion and allowed the audience to do its own listening. Moreover, this indeterminacy allowed music to be action. This theatrical approach influenced a generation of artists that became the …
Pathologizing Of Love: A Sociological Analysis Of Codependency, Leslie J. Irvine
Pathologizing Of Love: A Sociological Analysis Of Codependency, Leslie J. Irvine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
A theory is developed to account for the emergence of the phenomenon of codependency. Codependency is targeted primarily at women since inequality constrains women from self-development outside relationships. It is argued that women experience relative deprivation and seek a socially acceptable way to avoid self-blame. Codependency's emergence in the late 1980s can be partly attributed to efforts of the recovery movement to secure legitimacy as agents of social control. The theory is tested by examining the emergence of the nineteenth-century illness called neurasthenia. It is argued that both codependency and neurasthenia are metaphors for female discontent. The particular expressions taken …
Nonlinear Stochastic Systems, Guo-Qiang Cai
Nonlinear Stochastic Systems, Guo-Qiang Cai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This thesis is concerned with nonlinear dynamical systems subject to random or combined random and deterministic excitations. To this end, a systematic procedure is first developed to obtain the exact stationary probability density for the response of a nonlinear system under both additive and multiplicative excitations of Gaussian white noises. This procedure is applicable to a class of systems called the class of generalized stationary potential. The basic idea is to separate the circulatory probability flow from the noncirculatory flow, thus obtaining two sets of equations for the probability potential. It is shown that previously published exact solutions are special …
Photoluminescence Characterization Of Aluminum Gallium Arsenide/Gallium Arsenide Quantum Well Interfacial Quality, Zhong Wan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
A photoluminescence (PL) study of Al(x)Ga(1-x)As/GaAs quantum wells (QWs) was undertaken at low temperature by using the HeNe laser. The temperature dependence of heavy hole exciton peak energies indicated that the PL signals are contributed by the recombination of excitons bound to interface defects at low temperature and the recombination of free excitons at high temperature. The temperature dependence of the PL profile of a single QW sample with growth interruption at the interfaces was successfully interpreted by the enlarged monolayer fluctuation. The linewidth of low temperature PL peaks was used to characterize the interfacial quality of QWs. The quality …

Eight null hypotheses were tested. The subjects in this ex post facto study were the 362 practical nursing students who entered the Broward County Practical Nursing Program between April 1988 and August 1989. The subjects included 195 Black females, 138 White females, 11 Black males, and 18 White males. Approximately sixty percent (218) of the students completed the …
Sensitivity Analysis For Machine Cell Formation Using Mathematical Model And Computer Simulation, Ravi. Yelamanchi
Sensitivity Analysis For Machine Cell Formation Using Mathematical Model And Computer Simulation, Ravi. Yelamanchi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This thesis presents a mathematical model for the sensitivity analysis of machine cell formation. Computer programs in C were developed. A statistical simulation model is developed to test and verify the mathematical model. The data for machine cell formation in cellular manufacturing is organized in a machine component chart representing the machining requirements of parts in the product mix. The existing machine cell formation models treat the product mix as deterministic. To study the probabilistic nature of the cellular manufacturing, a sensitivity analysis model is presented. The model optimizes the formation of intercellular material handling cost for the machine cell …
Single Antepartum Mother's Lived Experience Of Receiving Care From The Father Of The Baby: A Phenomenological Perspective, Brenda Elizabeth Ream
Single Antepartum Mother's Lived Experience Of Receiving Care From The Father Of The Baby: A Phenomenological Perspective, Brenda Elizabeth Ream
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The purpose of the study was to come to understand the experience of a caring interaction between a single mother and the father of the baby. A qualitative study from a phenomenological perspective was used, with eleven participants being interviewed. Significant statements from the interviews were analyzed according to the four steps developed by Giorgi (1985). A description of the meaningful experience was obtained which includes the common themes of caring and non-caring. The themes and the implications for nursing practice are discussed.
Spectroscopic Studies Of Zinc(1-X) Manganese(X) Sulfur, Xiaoming. Chen
Spectroscopic Studies Of Zinc(1-X) Manganese(X) Sulfur, Xiaoming. Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The optical properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn1-x MnxS have been studied by using photoluminescence emission, lifetime and excitation spectroscopies. In photoluminescence spectroscopy three bands were found peaking at 585 nm (yellow band), 650 nm (orange band) and 750 nm (red band). For the yellow and red bands the peak position changes little with Mn concentration. For the orange band the peak energy decreases with increasing Mn concentration. The lifetimes of the yellow, orange and red bands were found to be about 70, 50 and 7 mus. The results of the lifetime measurements support the assumption that there is …
Some Calculated Properties Of Beta Prime-Nickel Aluminum, Eric Lawrence Hines
Some Calculated Properties Of Beta Prime-Nickel Aluminum, Eric Lawrence Hines
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The band structure, density of states, Fermi surface, bulk modulus and heat of formation were calculated for beta prime-NiAl using the SCF-LMTO-ASA method. The equilibrium lattice constant was also determined by minimizing the total energy. The angle-resolved and x-ray photocurrents from the valence bands were determined using the NEWPOOL and XPSI codes and the calculated spectra were compared with recent experimental measurements. In the former case, the calculations were carried out for the (001) surface using s-polarized light and included the experimentally observed relaxations of the top two layers with an Al termination. The overall agreement between the theoretical and …
Stochastic Earthquake Ground Motion Modeling, Ruichong. Zhang
Stochastic Earthquake Ground Motion Modeling, Ruichong. Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
A model for earthquake ground motion is developed in this dissertation using principles of geophysics and stochastics. The earth is idealized as being composed of horizontally stratified layers, with uniform physical properties for each layer. The seismic source is assumed to be the result of shear dislocation propagating on a fault line, which is further discretized into a series of point sources at equal intervals. The fundamental problem of the ground motion in a layered medium due to a point source at a given source location is first considered. The governing equations of three-dimensional wave motion in a uniform layer …
Teenagers' Perspectives Of Caring During Labor And Delivery, Sylvia. Sanderson
Teenagers' Perspectives Of Caring During Labor And Delivery, Sylvia. Sanderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The problem of the study was to understand the experience of being cared for by a nurse during labor and delivery. The review of literature for the study examined research focusing on adolescents in labor and delivery, caring and adolescent pregnancy and caring from current nursing literature perspective. Recalled labor and delivery experiences were analyzed phenomenologically in order to extract the meaning of the experience. Five recently delivered primiparous mothers were interviewed. Interviews followed guidelines designed to elicit descriptions of nurse caring. Interviews were tape recorded and transcribed. Data were reduced through a search for themes, and analyzed using guidelines …
Tool Wear Monitoring Using Artificial Neural Networks, Venkatesh. Kurapati
Tool Wear Monitoring Using Artificial Neural Networks, Venkatesh. Kurapati
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
An on-line scheme for monitoring tool wear in unmanned machining operations using artificial neural networks (ANNs) is proposed. Various configurations of ANNs are studied to increase the accuracy of tool wear estimation. With this aim three configurations of the ANNs namely, an ANN without memory, an ANN with one phase memory, and an ANN with two phase memory are considered. Each ANN is trained to associate an input vector which consists of values of cutting conditions, with an output vector containing flank wear as a single output. The training data and evaluation data is generated using the popular analytical tool …
The Structure Of Values Synthesized From The Lived Experiences Of Agency Nurses, Wendy Lea Strews
The Structure Of Values Synthesized From The Lived Experiences Of Agency Nurses, Wendy Lea Strews
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The purpose of this study was to identify nursing values from lived experiences of six nurses during interactions with patients. Nurses employed by nursing agencies were asked: "describe an interaction you have experienced with a patient that best represents your nursing values". Giorgi's method of interpretation for phenomenological studies was used to analyze the stories. From each participant's specific values a general description of the structure of all participants' values was generated. Caring was the predominant value that emerged and encompasses nursing practice and the compassionate action it teaches. Concepts emerging from the study are living and learning of values, …
Vision And Revision: The Perceptual Modes Of Henry James, Kevin Ray Allen
Vision And Revision: The Perceptual Modes Of Henry James, Kevin Ray Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
For Henry James, artistic vision is essentially revision. It is a process of transformation: of literal experience to "felt life," of pictorial presentation to dramatic representation, of the past to the present. This process is a central element of James's fiction. The "meaning" of stories such as "The Real Thing" and "The Middle Years" and novels such as The Ambassadors depends on a growth of vision. Their protagonists must be able to overcome the limits of their imaginations. They must be reflective, both intellectually and mimetically. In demanding a finer kind of artistic perception, James pointed the way for a …
Voices From The Distance: Radio Marti And The (Pen)Insular Construction Of Cuban Identity, Diana. Saco
Voices From The Distance: Radio Marti And The (Pen)Insular Construction Of Cuban Identity, Diana. Saco
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
In May, 1985, the United States government inaugurated Radio Marti, a broadcast-to-Cuba project with the avowed intent of providing the Cuban people with objective news. In this study I argue that an important though tacit political aim of this project is the reconstruction of Cuban identity. I take a cultural-studies approach in my "situated interpretation" of Radio Marti transmissions, foregrounding the mutual, discursive constitution of meaning and self-understanding. Situating my own voice within the multiple discourses on Cubanness, I note how the transmissions construct the voice of the Cuban exile in Miami and evoke an image of a separated Cuban …
Vortex Street Wakes Downstream Of Truncated And Full Cylinders In A Rotating Fluid, Bram. Leader
Vortex Street Wakes Downstream Of Truncated And Full Cylinders In A Rotating Fluid, Bram. Leader
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
An experimental study has been conducted to examine the flow field about and the wake behind truncated cylindrical obstacles of varying height, which are towed through a fluid with a free surface in a rotating system. The results show the development of a vortex street-type wake downstream of the obstacle for retrograde (westward) flows, even for very small ratios of obstacle height to water layer depth. For short obstacles, a pronounced backward flowing jet is observed, which impinges on the Taylor column from downstream. Prograde (eastward) flows are found to have a meandering wake that extends farther than eight obstacle …

Land Resources Study Of The Carnarvon Land Conservation District And Part Of Boolathana Station, Western Australia, M R. Wells, C D M Keating, J A. Bessell-Browne
Land resources series
A survey of the land resources of 36,343 ha covering the Carnarvon Land Conservation District and an adjoining portion of Boolathana station was conducted to assist future land use planning and management. This report describes the soil, landform and vegetation conditions of land units shown on an accompanying 1:50,000 scale map. These land units are components of land systems previously mapped at 1:250,000 scale for the Carnarvon Basin by Payne et al. (1987). As part of the study, further, more detailed land resource mapping and land capability assessments were conducted at specific locations. Land use planning and management considerations arising …
Integrated Environmental Control: The Expanding Matrix, Lakshman Guruswamy
Integrated Environmental Control: The Expanding Matrix, Lakshman Guruswamy
Publications
Professor Guruswamy addresses the configuration of forces creating global warming, and canvasses the action necessary to deal with this challenge. He identifies key reasons accounting for the failure of the United States to take adequate measures to control emissions of carbon dioxide at the national level, and for resisting international attempts to do so. Guruswamy argues that the problem of global warming should be dealt with within the framework of Integrated Environmental Control (IEC)--a radical approach to pollution prevention and modification of product demand. He reasons that by encompassing energy policy within the matrix of pollution control, IEC will promote …

Harnessing Of Offshore And Deep Sea Fishery Resources In The Exclusive Economic Zone Of Sri Lanka, Ginigaddarage Piyasena
Harnessing Of Offshore And Deep Sea Fishery Resources In The Exclusive Economic Zone Of Sri Lanka, Ginigaddarage Piyasena
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Sri Lanka declared her Exclusive Economic Zone in 1977, under Section 56 of the Maritime Zone Law No.22 of 1976. With this declaration she extended her jurisdiction over a 500,000 km of sea area as a coastal state. The acquisition of this vast sea area enables Sri Lanka to provide the most needed animal protein requirement of her population by harnessing the fishery resources available in the EEZ. This paper reviews the impact of the declaration of the Exclusive Economic Zone on the offshore and deep sea fish production in Sri Lanka from 1977 to 1990 especially in relation to …
Contemporary Piracy And Maritime Terrorism: Towards An Effective International Legal Response, David L. Scott
Contemporary Piracy And Maritime Terrorism: Towards An Effective International Legal Response, David L. Scott
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Piracy at sea has been a threat which has plagued the mariner since the earliest trading vessels took to the sea more than two thousand years ago. to those outside of the maritime community, the notion of piracy likely conjures up visions of Captain Kidd and Blackbeard, the sort of lifestyle, popularized in the Errol Flynn movies of the 1930x, which has long since passed into history. In reality, violence and robbery at sea is alive and well in certain geographic locations around the globe. In the past decade, the problem of pirate attack upon merchant vessels has become especially …

The Americans With Disabilities Act Of 1990: Implications For The Manning, Operation And Construction Of U.S. Commercial Vessels, Steven M. Stancliff
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 adds a new dimension to the body of anti discrimination law in the United States. Encompassing nearly all aspects of employment and public life, it has sent a shock wave of concern throughout the commercial vessels industry. Through examination of the Act's salient features and potential application to commercial vessel operation, manning, and construction, it is concluded that the Act's goals may be substantially achieved without additional risk or significant financial harm to shipowners. The requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 are not considered to be inconsistent with a shipowner's …
Achieving Total Compensation For Injuries To Coastal And Marine Resources: The Evolution Of Current Valuation And Compensation Methodologies, Marian Toon Mcphaul-Chester
Achieving Total Compensation For Injuries To Coastal And Marine Resources: The Evolution Of Current Valuation And Compensation Methodologies, Marian Toon Mcphaul-Chester
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Economists have developed numerous theories to calculate the total value of natural resources. These methods have been developed and applied over the last two decades. They continue to be refined through application and critique. Resource economists monetarily quantify the values which humans attach to coastal and marine resources. These valuation theories are the subject of much controversy in natural resource damage litigation. An understanding of the evolution of these damage provisions from the early common law actions to the current statutory remedies is essential those involved in coastal planning, management and litigation. This paper reviews these economic theories and the …
