A Radiant Flow Reactor For High-Temperature Reactivity Studies Of Pulverized Solids, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa Jan 1992

A Radiant Flow Reactor For High-Temperature Reactivity Studies Of Pulverized Solids, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa

Mechanical Engineering

Our radiant two‐phase flow reactor presents several new possibilities for high‐temperature reactivity studies. Most importantly, the thermal histories of the suspension and entrainment gas can be independently regulated over wide ranges. At low suspension loadings, outlet temperatures can differ by hundreds of degrees and gas temperatures are low enough to inhibit hydrocarbon cracking chemistry, so primary products are quenched as soon as they are expelled. With coal suspensions, tars were generated with the highest H/C ratio and lowest proton aromaticity ever reported. Alternatively, particles and gas can be heated at similar rates to promote secondary chemistry by increasing particle loading. …

Teaching Public Speaking As Composition, Michael Leff Jan 1992

Teaching Public Speaking As Composition, Michael Leff

Basic Communication Course Annual

The public speaking course has changed little during the past two decades, despite the rapid and profound changes that have occurred in rhetorical scholarship. By contrast, the basic composition course in English Departments has undergone transformations that more closely reflect the development of the scholarship. One reason for this difference may rest in our failure to regard the public speaking course as a serious part of our mission as teachers and scholars. By concentrating on the rhetoric of composition. we might not only generate innovative and theoretically interesting approaches to pedagogy, but we might improve our rhetorical scholarship by connecting …

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan Jan 1992

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Experimental modal analysis (EMA) is used as a non-destructive technique for the evaluation of Space Shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) tile bond integrity. Finite element (FE) models for tile systems were developed and were used to generate their vibration characteristics (i.e. natural frequencies and mode shapes). Various TPS tile assembly configurations as well as different bond conditions were analyzed. Results of finite element analyses demonstrated a drop in natural frequencies and a change in mode shapes which correlate with both size and location of disband. Results of experimental testing of tile panels correlated with FE results and demonstrated the feasibility …

A Concept Of The Secondary Principal And The School: A Reflective Essay, Richard W. Suchy Jan 1992

A Concept Of The Secondary Principal And The School: A Reflective Essay, Richard W. Suchy

Graduate Research Papers

Having been a teacher for more than twenty years, I felt that I had a good understanding of the role of the principal as I began my educational administration program. Through my experiences the last several years, both in and out of my educational administration courses, I have found that what I knew was less than what I did not know. I have gained experience and understanding, and I welcome the opportunity to continue to learn as well as the opportunity to lead. This paper focuses on those elements of education and administration that either have been new to me …

A Civic Republican Justification For The Bureaucratic State, Mark Seidenfeld Jan 1992

A Civic Republican Justification For The Bureaucratic State, Mark Seidenfeld

Scholarly Publications

Scholars have debated the legitimacy of the modern administrative state since its rise in the early twentieth century. In this Article, Professor Seidenfeld argues that the political theory of civic republicanism, with its emphasis on citizen participation in government and deliberative decisionmaking, provides the best justification for the American bureaucracy. Beginning with an analysis of civic republican theory, he notes that it promises greater citizen involvement in political decisionmaking, yet at the same time threatens to increase government power. Professor Seidenfeld finds that the current regime of administrative law neither allows for the full realization of civic republicanism's potential nor …

Review Of Michael Oakeshott, Rationalism In Politics And Other Essays, And Paul Franco, The Political Philosophy Of Michael Oakeshott, Chandran Kukathas Jan 1992

Review Of Michael Oakeshott, Rationalism In Politics And Other Essays, And Paul Franco, The Political Philosophy Of Michael Oakeshott, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Michael Oakeshott (1901-1990) was a political philosopher associated for most of his academic career with Caius and Gonville College as Official Fellow and Lecturer in History and later with the London School of Econom- ics as Professor of Political Science. His name is sometimes mentioned with those of two other famous thinkers associated with the LSE-Karl Popper and F. A. Hayek-and like them he has had a notable influence on contem- porary political thought. Yet whereas Hayek and Popper wrote a great deal on a variety of topics and were often at the center of academic controversy, Oakeshott wrote little, …

North American Social Values In Costa Rican Corporate Advertising, Nuria Estrada

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The objective of this study was to explore the possibility of using global advertising in the United States and Costa Rica. The researcher used content analysis to study words and images related to social values presented in 375 North American and 125 Costa Rican corporate advertisements during the decade 1980-1990. The social values found in these samples were classified according to the categories of the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS). Specifically, the researcher used what Rokeach called terminal values which are more socially oriented than personal values. A Chi-square statistical test was used to determine if differences between North American and …

Falling In Love, Lisa Diane Houha Jan 1992

Falling In Love, Lisa Diane Houha

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The series of paintings and drawings I have completed for my thesis exhibition, "Falling in Love," is the visual culmination of my personal approach to the creation of art: allowing a work to develop without the imposition of formal concerns. It is an autobiographical series, a visual journal, and approached with the belief that art comes from life and that my art comes specifically from my life. The subject and title of my research has to do with understanding feelings for myself, others, and my art through the process of making art. It is my observation that love is the …

Bray V. Alexandria Women's Health Clinic: The Supreme Court's Next Opportunity To Unsettle Civil Rights Law, Randolph M. Mclaughlin Jan 1992

Bray V. Alexandria Women's Health Clinic: The Supreme Court's Next Opportunity To Unsettle Civil Rights Law, Randolph M. Mclaughlin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The legislative history of the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 is scrutinized to determine the factual predicate that led to the enactment of 42 U.S.C. § 1985(3) and the classes Congress sought to protect under its provisions. The legislative history is also analyzed to determine which rights Congress sought to protect in § 1985(3). Part III discusses the Supreme Court's misinterpretation of the statute and attempts to provide guidance as to the proper outcome in Bray.

Chisom V. Roemer: Where Do We Go From Here?, Randolph M. Mclaughlin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In Chisom and Houston Lawyers' Association, the Court declined to address two substantive issues critical for pending and future litigation challenging the at-large election of state judges. The Court expressly stated that it would not decide the elements that must be proved to establish a violation of section 2 or the remedy that would be appropriate for a violation proven in the context of a judicial election. Part II will discuss the Chisom and Houston Lawyers' Association decisions. Analysis of these decisions, combined with a review of the legislative history, supports the Court's view of the amended section 2. In …

Government Liability For Economic Losses: The Case Of Regulatory Failure, David S. Cohen Jan 1992

Government Liability For Economic Losses: The Case Of Regulatory Failure, David S. Cohen

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Compensation claims against provincial and federal governments are largely a product of the second half of the 20th century. The initial surge of cases after the enactment of the federal Crown Liability Act in 1953--mirrored also in developments at the provincial level-- were typically "private" tort claims. Indeed a significant percentage of claims against the federal government continue to be nothing more than automobile accident, occupier liability claims and lawsuits arising out of similar relatively minor bureaucratic error. Recently, however, as a result of both the imagination of litigators and the growth of the regulatory state, claims against governments have …

Striking The Balance In Contract History, Joel Levin, Banks Mcdowell Jan 1992

Striking The Balance In Contract History, Joel Levin, Banks Mcdowell

Cleveland State Law Review

The past three decades have seen an enormous amount of writing by Anglo-American scholars about contract theory. If nothing else, this demonstrates the almost universal perception that there are serious problems with the received theory of contract, the product of giants like Holmes, Williston, Cardozo and Corbin. This theoretical activity, instead of creating a new paradigm, has produced divergent theoretical approaches with various bands of scholars striking off in quite different directions, and in the process leaving most judges and lawyers back at the starting point. What should we be trying to do when we build a contract theory for …

Mental Stress And Ohio Workers' Compensation: When Is A Stress-Related Condition Compensable, Fred J. Pompeani Jan 1992

Mental Stress And Ohio Workers' Compensation: When Is A Stress-Related Condition Compensable, Fred J. Pompeani

Cleveland State Law Review

Recent national studies have confirmed that workplace stress knows no occupational boundaries and, moreover, threatens the psychological well-being of the United States work force. Stress-related claims are expected to increase through the 1990s, and recent commentators fear that this predicted increase in stress-based claims will destroy some states' workers' compensation systems. Because of the potential for fraudulent claims and costly litigation, many states have moved to define and limit the situations in which workers are eligible for stress-related benefits. Limitations have come in the form of legislative enactments or judicial decisions establishing specific requirements or restrictions regarding stress claims. The …

Legal Malpractice In Ohio, John C. Nemeth Jan 1992

Legal Malpractice In Ohio, John C. Nemeth

Cleveland State Law Review

This article will discuss the fundamentals of a legal malpractice case, specifically addressing two areas. The first involves the elements of a legal malpractice case. This discussion will expose two problems that continually appear in legal malpractice litigation: (1) expanding the liability of an attorney to third parties, and (2) determining whether the alleged malpractice was the proximate cause of the plaintiff's injuries. The second area of discussion will focus on the time limitations imposed for bringing a legal malpractice action. Additionally, in order to better understand the current state of the law, a brief discussion illustrating the historical development …

Teaching About Justice And Social Contributions, Talbot D'Alemberte Jan 1992

Teaching About Justice And Social Contributions, Talbot D'Alemberte

Cleveland State Law Review

I have tried to state, in very brief outline, my case that the law schools and the large law firms have thrived on the “Paper Chase” model and that they are not fulfilling the mission which I will, without apology, call the seminary mission. They are not teaching us about justice. Each of us is at this conference because we are concerned with the way legal education operates today and most of us believe that it can be improved. Before this is over, I hope you design a grand agenda for change and I feel privileged to help begin that …

Nurturing The Impulse For Justice, Lynne Henderson Jan 1992

Nurturing The Impulse For Justice, Lynne Henderson

Cleveland State Law Review

By dwelling on doctrine and appellate case analysis we too often lose sight of the underlying assumptions behind the law and the social consequences of the law. By doing so we fail to give students even a glimmer of understanding as to what they need to know to fight injustice effectively. We spend much classroom time rationalizing the real and evading difficult questions of social justice. We do almost nothing to help our students develop any sense of justice or injustice or ways of identifying how the law produces justice and injustice. Let me work through an example of how …

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang Jan 1992

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang

Publications and Research

"The lesbian and gay press has shaped and reflected the rise of gay and lesbian liberation," Dan Tsang and Polly Thistlethwaite wrote in the introduction to the 'Lesbian and Gay' section of Katzes' 1992 edition of Magazines for Libraries. This title review of the queer periodicals of the day was intended to serve as a guide and justification for 'mainstream' libraries' collection building. The number and range of titles in Thistlethwaite and Tsang's collaborative entries (1989, 1992, and 1995) far exceeded any mainstream library collection known to either of the authors who were nevertheless hopeful that libraries would expand …

Effects Of Electronic Mail On Staff Communication Satisfaction And Computer Anxiety, Donald D. Luck Jan 1992

Effects Of Electronic Mail On Staff Communication Satisfaction And Computer Anxiety, Donald D. Luck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research indicates teacher isolation and computer anxiety are significant problems effecting teachers. This study examined the influence of electronic mail on these two problems. The research hypotheses questioned whether electronic mail installation positively effected a staff's level of communication satisfaction and/or lowered their level of computer anxiety.

Three sites were used in the study. Site One had electronic mail at the time of both measurements, Site Two implemented electronic mail immediately following the first measurement, and Site Three never used electronic mail. Ten months separated the measurements.

The study used the Computer Satisfaction Questionnaire to measure eight components of communication …
