Accurate benchmarks are particularly important for highly correlated oxides as mean-field approximations often fail to describe the subtle balance of charge transfer and magnetism in these materials with an accuracy comparable to experimental needs. Here we present accurate diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) results of the electronic charge and spin densities for the tunable highly correlated oxide Li1–xNiO2 for x = 0, 1/2, and 1. To enable quantitative comparisons, we introduce a robust density-partitioning scheme, extending Voronoi analysis to assign atomic charges from spatially noisy DMC densities. We then benchmark common approximations used in density functional theory (DFT). Comparison against DMC …

The cochlea systematically encodes sound frequency and intensity via a precisely organized tonotopic map, in which traveling waves peak at specific cochlear locations. A fundamental but incompletely understood aspect of auditory coding involves how stimulus intensity shapes this tonotopic organization. In animal models, increasing intensity shifts the cochlear traveling wave peak basally; however, physiological evidence for such intensity-dependent shifts in human cochlear processing is limited. Here, we performed simultaneous multielectrode electrocochleography recordings along the human scala tympani to characterize how cochlear place coding varies as a function of stimulus intensity. In subjects with preserved cochlear mechanics, including individuals with auditory …

Problem Statement/Question:
Appropriate documentation of medical diagnoses is crucial to hospital billing and can limit insurance contention of medical treatments. Incorrect or vague documentation of diagnostic codes can decrease hospital reimbursement, and post-discharge queries can cause unnecessary time burdens on physicians. Pneumonia diagnoses account for almost 25% of all queries at Children's Mercy Hospital, mostly due to failure to include specific details such as causal organism or location. From September 2023-2024 roughly 10% of pneumonia diagnoses required queries, of which 95% had suggested changes accepted, indicating that there is a need for improvement with initial documentation.

The Paradox Of Protection: How Age Of Consent Laws Fail The Youth They Were Designed To Defend, Christie Smith
The Paradox Of Protection: How Age Of Consent Laws Fail The Youth They Were Designed To Defend, Christie Smith
Advanced Issues in Criminal Law: Sex Offenses
This paper examines the historical development, modern inconsistencies, and unintended consequences of age of consent laws in the United States and abroad. Tracing the doctrine from its origins in English common law through reform movements in countries such as the United States, India, and Canada, the paper argues that age of consent laws have often reflected shifting political, economic, and patriarchal objectives rather than coherent principles of protection or developmental maturity. The paper explores discrepancies across jurisdictions, contradictions in adolescent autonomy, gender bias in enforcement, and the overcriminalization of consensual relationships between minors. It further analyzes how modern statutory frameworks …

Asymmetric Maxillary Molar Distalization And Guided Canine Eruption Using Temporary Anchorage Devices And Super-Elastic Niti Wire, Kah-Ying Yim, Huei-Mei Tsai, Yu-Ling Cheng, Ming-Jeaun Su, Yi-Min Liu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
An adult female patient presented with a pronounced maxillary dental midline deviation and localized crowding in the upper right quadrant, particularly involving the canine and second molar. The maxillary right canine was buccally erupted and overlapped the lateral incisor and first premolar due to insufficient arch space and unfavorable root proximity. The mandibular arch exhibited mild anterior crowding with a flat curve of Spee. Orthodontic treatment was initiated using preadjusted fixed appliances. Extraction of the maxillary right third molar was performed to allow immediate sequential distalization of the maxillary right molars. A bypassed-canine main archwire in combination with a temporary …

Finding Your People, Finding Your Place: Institutional Collaborative Writing Groups As A Compassionate Approach To Developing A Professional Sotl Identity, Ruth L. Healey, Sean A. Morrissey, Mick Healey
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Practising the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has been shown to help staff from non-traditional backgrounds (e.g. professional backgrounds) develop a sense of belonging within academia. This article examines how institutional collaborative writing groups support inexperienced SoTL practitioners in finding their place within their institution. Drawing on literature about SoTL identity and collaborative writing groups (CWGs), we consider how these CWGs assist colleagues in shaping their professional identities. We found that some staff did not see themselves as ‘academics’ or ‘researchers’, especially when their job emphasised teaching, such as ‘Teaching Fellow’. However, they strongly desired recognition and appreciation for …

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Student disengagement has become a prominent concern across higher education in the five years since the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet students who are engaged in learning tend to be more successful academically. Therefore, pedagogies that enhance student engagement increase the probability of students’ success. This qualitative study explored curriculum negotiation as one such pedagogy. Results demonstrated similar behavioral and cognitive engagement from students in traditional and negotiated classes, but greater affective and agentic engagement from those who negotiated the curriculum with their classmates. Additionally, more students in negotiated classes indicated transformative learning than students in traditionally taught classes. We examine the …

Holographic Data Sharding For Cross-Jurisdictional Storage And Ephemeral Edge Reconstruction, Mohsin Alam
Defensive Publications Series
A waveform security model may use a holographic sharding process to transform a data object into a set of mathematically incomplete and individually unintelligible interference patterns. An orchestration engine can distribute these shards across multiple storage providers and/or jurisdictions, configured to prevent a single entity from possessing sufficient information for reconstruction. The complete data object can be reconstituted, for example, ephemerally within a secure processing environment on an authorized client device (e.g., a smartphone, a laptop computer) at a time of use. This process can render data non-local, disaggregated, and mathematically incomplete at rest, potentially improving data sovereignty and secrecy …
