Vision And Revision: The Perceptual Modes Of Henry James, Kevin Ray Allen Jan 1992

Vision And Revision: The Perceptual Modes Of Henry James, Kevin Ray Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

For Henry James, artistic vision is essentially revision. It is a process of transformation: of literal experience to "felt life," of pictorial presentation to dramatic representation, of the past to the present. This process is a central element of James's fiction. The "meaning" of stories such as "The Real Thing" and "The Middle Years" and novels such as The Ambassadors depends on a growth of vision. Their protagonists must be able to overcome the limits of their imaginations. They must be reflective, both intellectually and mimetically. In demanding a finer kind of artistic perception, James pointed the way for a …

Voices From The Distance: Radio Marti And The (Pen)Insular Construction Of Cuban Identity, Diana. Saco Jan 1992

Voices From The Distance: Radio Marti And The (Pen)Insular Construction Of Cuban Identity, Diana. Saco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In May, 1985, the United States government inaugurated Radio Marti, a broadcast-to-Cuba project with the avowed intent of providing the Cuban people with objective news. In this study I argue that an important though tacit political aim of this project is the reconstruction of Cuban identity. I take a cultural-studies approach in my "situated interpretation" of Radio Marti transmissions, foregrounding the mutual, discursive constitution of meaning and self-understanding. Situating my own voice within the multiple discourses on Cubanness, I note how the transmissions construct the voice of the Cuban exile in Miami and evoke an image of a separated Cuban …

Workspace Evaluation And Kinematic Calibration Of Stewart Platform, Jian. Wang Jan 1992

Workspace Evaluation And Kinematic Calibration Of Stewart Platform, Jian. Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Parallel manipulators have their special characteristics in contrast to the traditional serial type of robots. Stewart platform is a typical six degree of freedom fully parallel robot manipulator. The goal of this research is to enhance the accuracy and the restricted workspace of the Stewart platform. The first part of the dissertation discusses the effect of three kinematic constraints: link length limitation, joint angle limitation and link interference, and kinematic parameters on the workspace of the platform. An algorithm considering the above constraints for the determination of the volume and the envelop of Stewart platform workspace is developed. The workspace …

The Percentage Consonants Correct And Intelligibility Of Normal, Language Delayed, And History Of Language Delayed Children, Randi Jartun Jan 1992

The Percentage Consonants Correct And Intelligibility Of Normal, Language Delayed, And History Of Language Delayed Children, Randi Jartun

Dissertations and Theses

Highly unintelligible children may mistakenly be assumed to have difficulty only with the misarticulation of consonants. Expressive language concerns may be ignored while the primary focus of intervention becomes the correction of misarticulated speech. Questions have arisen regarding the possibility of both speech and expressive language difficulties contributing to unintelligibility. Shriberg and Kwiatkowski (1982) developed an ordinal means of rating severity of involvement. One of the constructs of the severity scale was intelligibility. The metric percentage consonants correct (PCC) was developed to identify severity of involvement of disorders of phonology.

Integrated Environmental Control: The Expanding Matrix, Lakshman Guruswamy Jan 1992

Integrated Environmental Control: The Expanding Matrix, Lakshman Guruswamy

Publications

Professor Guruswamy addresses the configuration of forces creating global warming, and canvasses the action necessary to deal with this challenge. He identifies key reasons accounting for the failure of the United States to take adequate measures to control emissions of carbon dioxide at the national level, and for resisting international attempts to do so. Guruswamy argues that the problem of global warming should be dealt with within the framework of Integrated Environmental Control (IEC)--a radical approach to pollution prevention and modification of product demand. He reasons that by encompassing energy policy within the matrix of pollution control, IEC will promote …

Contemporary Piracy And Maritime Terrorism: Towards An Effective International Legal Response, David L. Scott Jan 1992

Contemporary Piracy And Maritime Terrorism: Towards An Effective International Legal Response, David L. Scott

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Piracy at sea has been a threat which has plagued the mariner since the earliest trading vessels took to the sea more than two thousand years ago. to those outside of the maritime community, the notion of piracy likely conjures up visions of Captain Kidd and Blackbeard, the sort of lifestyle, popularized in the Errol Flynn movies of the 1930x, which has long since passed into history. In reality, violence and robbery at sea is alive and well in certain geographic locations around the globe. In the past decade, the problem of pirate attack upon merchant vessels has become especially …

Netc Tank Farm Five Hazardous Waste Cleanup: An Investigation And Evaluation Of Cleanup Practices For Waste Oil Tanks At Netc, Newport, Ri, David J. Sisson Jan 1992

Netc Tank Farm Five Hazardous Waste Cleanup: An Investigation And Evaluation Of Cleanup Practices For Waste Oil Tanks At Netc, Newport, Ri, David J. Sisson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

My intention in this paper is to focus on the "chronic" hazardous waste problem stemming from past disposal/storage practices. More specifically, to focus on two underground storage tanks at NETC which were used for the storage of hazardous waste (waste oil tanks). It is now common knowledge that old underground storage tanks throughout the country present a potential ground water contamination hazard which must be dealt with. Over the past decade naval installations have heightened their awareness of environmental responsibilities and implemented recycling programs for the disposal of paper, glass, etc. and have even established programs for fuel collection and …

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The establishment of Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC) is a direct outcome of OPA-90 which will have a substantial effect on domestic shipment, storage and traffic of oil. The ramifications of the law will be felt internationally and it has set a precedent for prevention of oil spills from tankers throughout the world. It will have a positive impact on the environment of the world. But it will be costly and the public will ultimately bear the burden of the environment impact.

Sea Level Rise And Its Impact On Bangladesh, Carlos Alfredo Castro Ortiz Jan 1992

Sea Level Rise And Its Impact On Bangladesh, Carlos Alfredo Castro Ortiz

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Global temperatures are expected to increase as a result of the so-called "greenhouse" effect, causing concern among scientists who fear that the sea level may rise as much as three meters by 2100. Using mid-range seal-level-rise scenarios of 1.5 and 2 meters potential socioeconomic impacts on coastal Bangladesh are discussed. The geography is described point out the spatial extent and magnitude of potential damages. Topographic and political-administrative maps are used for population distribution and economic analyses of the areas which would be affected in the sea level rise scenarios. A valuation technique is used to project the gradual GDP loss …

The Bill Of Rights And Originalism, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 1992

The Bill Of Rights And Originalism, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

Professor Bradley begins the final installment of the University of Illinois Law Review's year-long tribute to the Bill of Rights by proposing that the first ten Amendments, like the Constitution itself, be interpreted according to the original understanding of their ratifiers. Professor Bradley, though, narrows the scope of the exegetical inquiry to what he proposes is the only sound originalism - plain meaning, historically recovered. Professor Bradley argues that interpreting the Bill of Rights according to the text's plain meaning among persons politically active at the time of drafting avoids both the inflexibility and philosophical deficiencies of "snapshot" conservative originalism …

An Evaluation Of The Accuracy Of Reporting Of Race For American Indian Decedents Using The 1986 National Mortality Followback Survey, A Handler, L. Querec

Native Health Database Full Text

The 1986 National Mortality Followback Survey (NMFS) was conducted by the National Center for Health Statistic (NCHS) to provide information on characteristics which may be related to mortality, but which is not collected on death certificates. This information includes such things as lifestyle characteristics, presence of health conditions, care received in the last year of life, and certain demographic characteristics. The NMFS has provided the Indian Health Service (IHS) with an important opportunity - that of estimating the extent of race misclassification of American Indian deaths on State death certificates. The extent of such reporting has remained unmeasured. The recent …

Age And Growth Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) In The Lower Platte River, Nebraska, Richard S. Holland, Edward J. Peters

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, is an important component of the Platte River fishery, representing the most abundant and sought-after sport fish. However, little is known concerning the size structure and growth characteristics of this population. We collected channel catfish from seven sites along the lower Platte River from 1988 to 1991, using a combination of hoop nets, boat electrofishing, and angler tournament harvests. Pectoral spines were removed from a subsample of catfish collected, sectioned, and aged for determination of backcalculated growth. Proportional Stock Density (PSD) calculated from hoop net and electrofishing collections averaged 7.2% and ranged from 4.0 …

Investigations Of Forage Fish And Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Interactions In Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming-Utah, Daniel L. Yule

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

I investigated the interaction of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and their dominant forage fish populations, Utah chub (Gila atraria) and kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming-Utah. Through bioenergetics modeling, I quantified the consumption dynamics of the lake trout population. From hydroacoustics analyses, I quantified the density and biomass of the two dominant forage fish populations.

In Chapter II, I report the results of the energetics analysis. The objective of this chapter was to understand the role of lake trout predation in recent changes in fish assemblage structure of the reservoir. Through …

Use Of Landsat Imagery And Geographical Information Systems In The Assessment Of Rangeland Cover And Wildlife Habitat, Mary Hunnicutt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The first chapter of this thesis reviews applications of satellite remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) in wildlife studies. The simpler uses of remote sensing are for habitat mapping, often using satellite imagery classified for other natural resources. More sophisticated applications incorporate remotely sensed data into a GIS for the digital manipulation of data planes. The most advanced applications are those which use remote sensing and GIS in models predicting habitat quality or population levels.

The second chapter reports how brightness values of six Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) bands were used in multiple linear regressions to predict percent cover …
