Jeremy Rifkin Challenges Recombinant Dna Research: A Rhetoric Of Heresy., Wiley Michael Futrell Jan 1992

Jeremy Rifkin Challenges Recombinant Dna Research: A Rhetoric Of Heresy., Wiley Michael Futrell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Western culture, in large part, is a product of scientific inquiry, technological development and the ability to harness some of nature's resources. Much of society looks to science for technology-related solutions to many of its ills. As it develops new technology, science necessarily seeks to understand and control the forces of nature. Although science assumes a prominent role in contemporary society, that prominence does not necessarily translate into cultural consensus on the progress achieved by technological developments. Another perspective is represented by those who contend that continued technological advancement is the source of existing problems, not the solution. As these …

Three Essays In Dividend Policy., Jaisik Gong Jan 1992

Three Essays In Dividend Policy., Jaisik Gong

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation focuses on three leading theoretical and empirical issues in the anomaly of dividend policy. The first essay analyzes the explanatory power of the various theories of dividend determinants, many of which have not been tested yet. In this essay, time-series cross-sectional tests are undertaken using individual firm data, while the structural vector autoregressive (VAR) methodology is applied to the aggregate data. The second essay proposes an alternative approach to the ex-dividend anomalies that fully incorporates both the tax-effect hypothesis and the short-term trading hypothesis. This approach draws on normative portfolio selection models to examine the relationships between the …

The Rhetoric Of Synnationalism: A Model Of Foreign Policy Discourse., Ralph A. Hamlett Jan 1992

The Rhetoric Of Synnationalism: A Model Of Foreign Policy Discourse., Ralph A. Hamlett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The United States, as other nation-states, claims legitimacy as an agency for the expression of the aspirations of its people. This political structure appeared as part of a historical process that implied a transfer of authority from ruling elite(s) to the public. However, U.S. foreign policy discourse evidences an incomplete relocation of authority. In matters of sovereignty and national interests, the policy establishment considers itself more capable of decisions than ordinary people. The establishment tends to view citizens as masses disinterested in and incapable of understanding vital decisions of the state. The policy establishment assumes the public's role is best …

Students' Use Of Teacher Feedback During Badminton Instruction., Nyit Chin Keh Jan 1992

Students' Use Of Teacher Feedback During Badminton Instruction., Nyit Chin Keh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the relationship between teacher feedback variables, student process variables, and student achievement. Another purpose was to investigate the mediating role of student process variables in student achievement. The subjects were 41 college students enrolled in two beginning badminton classes, and an experienced physical education teacher volunteered to teach both classes. Ten 45 minute instructional sessions took place over a 5 week period. Each class session was videotaped for subsequent coding. Subjects were pretested, posttested, and given a retention test on three badminton skills, the forehand high serve, the forehand overhead clear, and the backhand overhead clear. Student …

A Comparison Of The Physiological Responses Of Brain-Damaged Alcoholics, Nonbrain-Damaged Alcoholics, And Social Drinkers To The Smell Of Alcohol., Fredric D. Klug Jan 1992

A Comparison Of The Physiological Responses Of Brain-Damaged Alcoholics, Nonbrain-Damaged Alcoholics, And Social Drinkers To The Smell Of Alcohol., Fredric D. Klug

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study reviews the relapse prevention and neuropsychological literature relevant to alcoholism. The argument was made that impaired neuropsychological functioning may be an important determinant of relapse. Specifically, neuropsychological impairment was expected to affect the manner in which individuals respond to conditioned alcohol cues so as to increase their attention to the cues and increase their desire to drink, a process which might adversely affect recovery. In order to study the impact of conditioned alcohol cues, subjective, objective, and psychophysiological responses of brain-damaged alcoholics, nonbrain-damaged alcoholics, and nonbrain-damaged social drinkers were compared on their responses to alcohol and to water. …

Parallel Geometric Algorithms., Fenglien Lee Jan 1992

Parallel Geometric Algorithms., Fenglien Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geometric algorithms have many important applications in science and technology. Some geometric problems require fast response time that could not be achieved by traditional sequential algorithms. However, the speed, power and versatility of parallel computers can be exploited to develop efficient geometric algorithms as shown in this dissertation. Our study focuses on designing efficient parallel geometric algorithms and analyzing their computational complexities. In this research, first we developed a parallel algorithm to find the maxima of a set of N points in the d-dimensional space, d $>$ 3, on a hypercube SIMD machine. Our algorithm is a parallel implementation …

A Formal Methodology For The Specification Of Distributed Systems From An Object Perspective., Sangbum Lee Jan 1992

A Formal Methodology For The Specification Of Distributed Systems From An Object Perspective., Sangbum Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Distributed computing systems are systems in which multiple processors run independently by communicating with each other. The design of distributed systems is difficult to achieve as the execution patterns of distributed system are typically more complex than those of non-distributed computing systems. The application of object-oriented techniques to the design of distributed systems has the potential to increase the power of modeling and computing. A formal methodology which includes a specification language, developed from an object perspective, for the development of distributed systems is presented. The formal specification language, DOSL (Distributed Object-based Specification Language), represents the specification of distributed systems …

Incorporating Reservoir Characteristics For Automatic History Matching., Keith J. Halford Jan 1992

Incorporating Reservoir Characteristics For Automatic History Matching., Keith J. Halford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Automatic history matching is refined in this work by expanding the objective function and incorporating reservoir characteristics in the process of parameter selection. Iso-value contours are used to incorporate reservoir characteristics within history-matching parameters. These improvements are implemented in an automatic history-matching algorithm, OPTIM, that is coupled with BOAST II. Case histories of both hypothetical and real reservoirs demonstrated the effectiveness of incorporating reservoir characteristics in automatic history-matching parameters.

Chemical And Immunological Properties Of Polysaccharide Extracted From Vibrio Parahaemolyticus., Mina Jassemzadeh Izadjoo Jan 1992

Chemical And Immunological Properties Of Polysaccharide Extracted From Vibrio Parahaemolyticus., Mina Jassemzadeh Izadjoo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was extracted from agar grown cells and purified by ethanol precipitation, hi-speed centrifugation and chromatography on Sepharose CL-4B and Detoxi columns. The CPS was found to be acidic when chromatographed on DEAE cellulose. The three constituting sugars were determined by gas-liquid chromatography to be glucose, galactose and fucose. The molecular weight of CPS is one million or greater and in its pure form appeared to be non-immunogenic for rabbits. A monoclonal antibody (Mab) reactive by ELISA to CPS was generated. The Mab agglutinated whole cell suspensions in the slide test. Latex beads armed …

Improvement Of The Data Analysis Algorithm By Applying The Decision Tree Method., Won Chan Jung Jan 1992

Improvement Of The Data Analysis Algorithm By Applying The Decision Tree Method., Won Chan Jung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Data analysis (reconstructability analysis) is an area used on a data set which has several variables and a function value to find the most important factor that causes the function values to fall within a desired range. Normal data analysis algorithm (1) finds the most important factor in O (2$\sp{n})$ time. This dissertation introduces a newly developed system of algorithms called the Data Analyzing Tree (DAT) which is designed to either reduce the time complexity or produce more accurate results. DAT-1 uses O $(n\sp2)$ time to produce the same results as the normal data analysis method, and DAT-2 produces the …

Stratigraphic Architecture Of An Extensional Orogen: The Mojave Extensional Belt, Southern California., Christopher John Travis Jan 1992

Stratigraphic Architecture Of An Extensional Orogen: The Mojave Extensional Belt, Southern California., Christopher John Travis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field-based studies and quantitative models provide new insights into the stratigraphic architecture of a developing continental extensional orogen. The early Miocene age Mojave Extensional Belt of southern California (MEB) exhibits a tripartite stratigraphy, consisting of (1) pre- to early synextension volcanic deposits, unconformably overlain by (2) syntectonic basement-derived megabreccia and breccia with local finer-grained units, overlain by (3) a posttectonic fining-upward sequence of gravel, sand, shale, and limestone. On a more local scale, stratigraphy and sediment dispersal within the MEB reflect the evolution of the major tectonic elements of the belt: (1) Breakaway zone. Strata of the western Newberry Mountains …

There are currently no existing commercial products designed to assist the orthopedic surgeon in planning these complex procedures. Additionally, orthopedic surgeons are not trained in mechanics, kinematics, math modeling, or the use of computers. …

The Stability Of Thick, Self-Gravitating Disks In Protostellar Systems., John William Woodward Jan 1992

The Stability Of Thick, Self-Gravitating Disks In Protostellar Systems., John William Woodward

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We perform a computational survey of the stability of protostellar systems which contain a self-gravitating disk. The systems are initially represented by a point mass $M\sb{c}$ at the center and a geometrically thick, axisymmetric disk of mass $M\sb{d}$ that supports uniform specific angular momentum and obeys an n = 3/2, polytropic equation of state. The equilibrium disk structure is uniquely defined upon the specification of two key dimensionless system parameters: $M\sb{d}/M\sb{c}$ and $T/\vert W\vert$ (the ratio of rotational kinetic energy of the disk to the gravitational potential energy of the system). The focus of this work is the identification of …

The Rhetoric Of Redemption: A Development Of Kenneth Burke's Theory Of Guilt-Purification-Redemption And Its Application To Martin Luther King, Jr.'S "I Have A Dream" Speech., David A. Bobbitt Jan 1992

The Rhetoric Of Redemption: A Development Of Kenneth Burke's Theory Of Guilt-Purification-Redemption And Its Application To Martin Luther King, Jr.'S "I Have A Dream" Speech., David A. Bobbitt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents an exposition and development of Kenneth Burke's theory of guilt-purification-redemption (also referred to as the "redemption drama"), and then an application of that theory through a critical analysis of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. King's speech is treated as the "representative anecdote" of the moderate wing of the first phase of the civil rights movement. The speech became an authorizing text on race relations and provided the movement with an articulation of its logic and narrative form. Usually Burke's theory is seen as positing two primary modes of purification of guilt: victimage and …

The Theatre Of Religion: Jimmy Swaggart Within American Myth Discourse., Terry Grant Byars Jan 1992

The Theatre Of Religion: Jimmy Swaggart Within American Myth Discourse., Terry Grant Byars

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the myth of the self-made man in American popular culture and how Jimmy Swaggart, the renowned televangelist, manipulates this myth in representing himself as an American hero. Central to such inquiry is Swaggart's use of theatrical device in promoting his heroism. Three fundamental questions provide the focus for investigation: (1) How in general does the creation of myth serve the needs of culture? (2) How specifically does the myth of self-made-ness benefit American culture? and (3) How is Swaggart able to participate in this powerful myth (especially using theatrical modes) in order to gain cultural sanction? In …

Metaphor And Metonym As Legend In Experience: Magic Does Make Our World Work, Megan Rachael Elliott Jan 1992

Metaphor And Metonym As Legend In Experience: Magic Does Make Our World Work, Megan Rachael Elliott

Honors Capstones

When Sir James Frazer unraveled the intricacies of magic in the early twentieth century/ he defined the sympathetic processes of contagion and homeopathy in magical acts. Almost contemporaneously, Lucien Levy-Bruhl analyzed native thinking in primitive cultures and discovered differences of associative and logical thought. Logical and associative thought processes/ originally thought to be culture dependent and exclusive, are now known to co-exist worldwide. The sympathetic processes of Frazer's magical acts further show themselves to be analogous to associative thinking through metaphoric and metonymic cognition that allows us to negotiate our everyday life. From these associative processes, we also extrapolate an …
